Let’s see, Gene Collier yesterday in a chat actually fielded a Pitt question.

jimmy_g: The devastating injury losses that the Pitt basketball team has suffered may be too much to overcome. How do you see this affecting their remaining season?

Gene Collier: Negatively and substantially. With Cook and Fields out, 30 percent of the scoring is gone, not to mention their experience. Fields ran the show. Now the show goes on without a front man. Fields could return by March. DuJuan Blair has broad shoulders, but not this broad.

Fo Sheezy, Pittsburgh: Andy: Let’s cut to the chase. With the injury bug in full force, what can we expect of Pitt the rest of the regular season? The Panthers looked like a top-10 team after the Duke game, but the Fields injury is an absolute killer. He is the best player on that team, and he plays the most important position. So here is my 2-part question…(1) Where do you see Pitt finishing in the Big East? and (2) What have you heard as far as the time table for a possible return for Levance Fields? Thanks!!

Andy Katz: Is that your real name?

Well, Fo, I can tell you that the world didn’t end at Pitt. Nope, there is no Chicken Little roaming around Petersen. Jamie Dixon is still very optimistic after Ronald Ramon had 10 assists and no turnovers. I totally disagree with Doug Gottlieb, who said Pitt is going to the NIT now. The Panthers will win games, especially at home. The Big East, save Marquette and Georgetown, is even and there are plenty of games to be had. As for Fields, think more Padgett than Cook. The surgery went well and the feeling is that he will be back possibly during the Big East season instead of in the postseason.

Finally there was the Ray Fittipaldo chat today.

7_man_rotation: Do you think Pitt can go .500 in Big East play and how many Big East games do you think they need to win to get into the NCAA tournament?

Ray Fittipaldo: I think if Pitt goes 9-9 in the Big East the Panthers would be giving themselves a chance. That would give them a 21-10 record entering the Big East tournament. If Pitt wins one game in New York I think they would be assured of a spot.

Pitt cannot have any letdowns against teams like Rutgers, Seton Hall and St. John’s this season because beating the upper echelon teams in the league will be difficult with Cook and Fields. I’ll predict they’ll play two games under .500 without Fields. But depending upon when he comes back they could still make a run a berth in the tournament.

needdepth: What are our chances against Nova? Can we match up?

Ray Fittipaldo: Villanova is not a big and strong team. Jay Wright has some nice guards and small forward types, but Sam Young and DeJuan should have a big edge on the inside. I think it will be a matter of whether Pitt can contain Scottie Reynolds. He’s Villanova’s best player and the Panthers will need to keep him in check if they want to have a chance.

The ‘Nova game scares the hell out of me because ‘Nova’s guards are slashers and penetrators. If (when?) they get past Ramon and Benjamin, they can be the ones that will get Blair and Young in foul trouble.

With the loss of players for Pitt, they fell in meaningless power rankings. ESPN.com dropped them to 15.

Like aging, coaching ain’t for sissies. Down two starters, Jamie Dixon is now coaching on the fly just as the Big East schedule dawns with a Sunday date at Villanova. One idea — get the ball in DeJuan Blair’s hands more. The sensational freshman forward took just six shots in a win against Lafayette.

And yet, for whatever reason, they have Dayton behind Pitt at #16.

Luke Winn at SI.com dropped Pitt, but has them at the top of of his “On the Cusp, Tier 1.”

Pittsburgh (11-1): The Panthers’ ugly loss at Dayton normally wouldn’t be enough to knock them out of the rankings. They do, after all, have a win over Duke on their resume. But with Mike Cook and Levance Fields now out of the equation, Pitt no longer resembles the scary team we saw at the Garden before Christmas.

I don’t have a problem with these rankings.

ESPN is doing some sort of top highlights of all time.

Jerome Lane’s backboard breaking dunk is on the list. Since they list by date — Jan 25, 1988 — it is somewhere in the middle of the list.

As BigEast.org comes up on my screen, I see the Pitt and West Virginia logos near the top. You would think it might say “Listen Live For Free To The Backyard Brawl”.

Nope…

No doubt the higher-ups of the Big East offices want to see West Virginia advance to the BCS title game. Will the refs give the Mountaineers a few calls? Conspiracy theory? Or am I just looking for an excuse after White/Slaton put up 600 yards and 50 points on us?

Solid podcasting from CFB Weekly takes a step backward this week. They talk to me about Dave Wannstedt, Pitt and dodging the Morelli bullet. Take a listen and fully grasp why I should be read and not heard.

Panther_Rants: If, as some people have insinuated, there are coaching changes at the end of the season, who do you expect will go? Rhoades? Cavanaugh? Dunn?

Paul Zeise: No offense, but I’d rather not get into that. I think we all know where the deficiencies are on this team and there is no need to rehash it every Thursday.

Paul Zeise: Negative? If you listen to the fans of your rivals I am a homer! And explain to me how you write about a team that has lost nine of ten games versus I-A opponents, who consistently has gotten beaten around by any team with a pulse, who gets blown out at home by Connecticut and then loses at home – and looks completely overmatched in doing so — to Navy — and be flowery and positive all the time?

ilivedinmemphis: Can’t you say something positive?

Paul Zeise: Conor Lee kicks the ball real good.

ilivedinmemphis: Why do you never quote recruiting analysts or national broadcasters in your stories?

Paul Zeise: Because recruiting “experts” are usually self appointed and what, other than perhaps recommendations on where to get good hair spray, do national broadcasters have to say that I couldn’t get out of some former coaches or players in the area who might actually have a clue as to the subject matter with which I am writing about? I think the practice of quoting people just to quote them is bad journalism.

Like I said, I generally enjoy the Q&As more. There are more things that slip in there.

Q: I know Pitt has a lot of young players, but are the Panthers just falling apart? Do you think the coaching staff should just write off the season and play as many freshmen and sophomores to get the team ready for next season?

ZEISE: I’d say by the looks of it that yes, the Panthers are falling apart. They have lost four in a row and with consecutive games against Cincinnati and Louisville coming up, it’s probable that the losing streak will grow to six. But this is college football and a lot can happen in a short period of time and teams are quickly able to change the direction of their season, for the good or the bad. If Pitt could beat Cincinnati this week, perhaps they gain some confidence and it grows and they finish strong (strong being 3-3 with three close losses over the next six). It doesn’t look likely, but it could happen. Which brings me to the second point, Pitt needs to put the best 22 players on the field regardless of their class, their age or their experience. The 22 guys who best give the team a chance to win a football game THIS YEAR because that’s really what the focus should be.

That actually seemed to happen in the Cinci game. Pitt played the best players, not the most experienced.

This one had the issue of a teeth-grinding cliche.

Q: Dave Wannstedt stated that he has a young team that is a “year away” from really competing. Do you really think a team that is a “year away” would be struggling this much? The last time I checked teams that were a “year away” could win seven games and get to a bowl. See Cincinnati (2006) and Rutgers (2005).

ZEISE: Of all the things coaches say, the one that usually makes me cringe the most is “we are a young team”. That is usually code for “we aren’t winning and we want you to give us more time to figure it out.” Teams with young players have found ways to win games in the past, so the excuse is used too often as a reason things aren’t going well. While I understand if you are young in certain areas – like the line on both sides of the ball – it is indeed tough to overcome, but there is never any excuse to lose on your home field to Navy, or get blown out by the likes of Connecticut or Virginia…

He then backtracks a bit in the case of Pitt because of injuries.

Of course, then Zeise could be accused of a little bit of bias in this response.

Q: At some point in the not so distant future, the Big East is going to have to make a change and add a team. Either that or some essential Big East team will escape to the Big Ten. Besides the unlikely possibility of adding Notre Dame to the football line-up, what are some other likely cases? What might be the best situation for Pitt football? I suppose this is something the new athletic director might have to think about during his tenure.
Zeise: The Big East had a built-in answer to its scheduling problems — Temple — and chose to throw it away because of some pettiness. Had they kept Temple — and really should have once it was clear it was going to have to lose itself — it would have a ninth football team, in a large market that makes sense geographically and every team could have four home and four away games every year and there’d be no talk of adding teams. And the beauty of it was Temple is already in a conference for its other sports, so you wouldn’t have had to go to 17 teams in basketball. As it is, finding another team willing to accept football membership only will be next to impossible so the Big East will continue to be a league that is rumored to be in transition because of the scheduling problems its current make-up presents.

Zeise got his Masters at Temple. He is ignoring a lot of reality here. The long-term is that the Big East will split. When has become a little more nebulous but it will still happen. The last thing the football conference wanted was having to deal with Temple. The program is a drag on finances (sharing bowl money) and academic standings (they are struggling badly to make the APR). There is the lack of fan support. The administration has never made any effort to really bring them up to modern standards or put money into them. Major media market or not, they aren’t a factor in football there.

Anyone remember when plenty of programs dreamed of luring Wannstedt back to college?

Coach on the outbound train: Pittsburgh’s Dave Wannstedt. He’s gone from NFL coach to being offered $20 million in 2001 to coach the Hurricanes, to getting fired by the Dolphins and going home to Pitt. Now, his team (2-4) has lost four straight, including 34-14 to Connecticut and 44-14 to Virginia. Cincinnati, Rutgers, South Florida and West Virginia are left on the schedule. When Wannstedt got the Pitt job, an NFL coach said he’d turn it into Rutgers, pre-2005.

I thought the rumored quote used Temple, not Rutgers.

Football’s been stressing everyone out. Too tense. Way too serious. There is a real need to relax.

Take a moment. Breathe in. Hold it. Let it out. Ahhhh. That always helps me feel better. Of course, it helps when you picture someone else taking that deep breath. Lately, it’s been Missy Peregrym, but go with who works for you.

Anyways, the college basketball season is creeping closer. Athlon and Lindy’s both have previews on the periodical racks. They put Pitt at #21 and #17.

ESPN.com also has a little teaser as it gets to the Big East in its “Conference Shootaround.”

The Panthers don’t play glamorous basketball, but it’s definitely effective, especially on the offensive end. Aaron Gray, Antonio Graves and Levon Kendall are gone, but Levance Fields (assuming resolution of his legal issues), Mike Cook and Ronald Ramon all return. Add in Sam Young, Keith Benjamin and Tyrell Biggs, who all showed flashes in more limited minutes, and the Panthers may look different this season but could score with similar effectiveness.

Jay Bilas puts Pitt at 6th in the Big East this season.

Jamie Dixon has another solid group that should be back in the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers have good guards, are experienced and understand how to win. In short, Pitt has a program, not just a few good teams. Dixon needs to resolve the Levance Fields situation, but even without Fields, this is an NCAA Tournament team.

The questions remain about what will happen with Levance Fields. Damn. Now I need to take a few more deep breaths.

Looks like Pitt will be in a position to find another prominent person for their athletic department. First it was the coaches; Dixon, then Wannstedt. Now, it’s the guy who hired/kept those two.

Pittsburgh athletic director Jeff Long will replace Frank Broyles in the same position at Arkansas, a person with knowledge of Long’s decision said Monday.

Broyles is retiring as the Razorbacks’ athletic director at the end of this year, and a person familiar with Long’s decision said he will leave Pitt to take over at Arkansas. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not been made.

Arkansas would not confirm Long’s hiring, but spokesman Tysen Kendig said a news conference was set for Tuesday afternoon regarding the athletic program.

Arkansas’ search had been a secretive one until last week, when Stanley Reed, chairman of the school’s board of trustees, confirmed that Long was “a strong candidate.” (The WWL)

It was looking more and more apparent that this was going to happen, but the press conference that Arkansas will hold tomorrow will probably confirm it. ESPN doesn’t usually put up items that turn out to be untrue (except saying Mike Vick wouldn’t plead guilty) so to me, this is a done deal. The AP story mentions that Long has few ties to Arkansas, a point echoed by a writer in that area. The question that matters — who’s the next Pitt AD?

Update: Two more stories from the local TV stations down there.

A week of website redesigns in Pittsburgh; first the Post-Gazette decided that they wanted to be NOW, and today the PittsburghPanthers.com redesign was revealed.

Most noticeably, the redesigned PittsburghPanthers.com features a larger lead photo for fans to appreciate the great photography and great moments in Pitt Athletics. The site also features a media player to provide users with free samples of Panthers All-Access as well as listings of upcoming events on Panthers All-Access.

Aspects of the website that remain but have been slightly refined is the Store/Tickets/Auctions tabs, Fan Poll and easy access to purchase tickets, merchandise and links to the Panther Club.

The navigation has changed from the left-hand side navigation to a horizontal navigation system with drop-down menus. The new masthead continues to feature Pitt student-athletes and select team shots; it also features Pitt facilities and monuments such as the Cathedral of Learning and Petersen Events Center. Also with this feature, users can click on picture in the masthead and be linked back to the main page.

Also available near the top of the page is the Gametracker scoreboard that provides direct links to audio, video and gametracker for upcoming Pitt athletic events. Farther down the page is an Events, Results and Photos section, this section provides up to date information along with photo galleries to coinciding events when applicable.

It doesn’t look all that bad to me although I’ve found a few problems (although it might be just my computer).

Longest play from scrimmage in team history: 91 yards (George McLaren in 1917 and Alex Van Pelt in 1992)

In 1914 we beat Dickinson by a score of 96-0. More recently, we pounded Rutgers 76-0, back in 1977. On the other hand, the biggest margin of defeat came in a 72-0 loss to Ohio State back in 1996.

The last time we had a punt return for a TD is Revis’ against WVU. I don’t think we’ll be forgetting that one anytime soon.

The guide lists 23 Panthers on NFL teams, however it was done before Curtis Martin retired so the actual number is 22. The most former Panthers on one team is three: Larry Fitzgerald, Greg Lee, and Gerald Hayes of the Arizona Cardinals. The Jets (Darrelle Revis, Hank Poteat) and the Saints (Tyler Palko, Rob Petitti) are the only other teams with more than one former Pitt player.

So there it is, (most) of the good stuff to see in this year’s football media guide. The season is just around the corner.

Yesterday at the end of the post about Clermond having charges against him dropped, I was going to rip the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. They were the first media outlet to report the story of his arrest back on July 24 when Paul Zeise broke the story on the P-G’s website. And when it was published online, they put it in REALLY BIG LETTERS at the top of the page. So I was a little curious as to why it took them so long to put up the story of his release from the charges. Does the Post-Gazette have some sort of anti-Pitt agenda? (Gasp!)

I decided not to bring it up yesterday, and today I learned that it might have just been a product of a bad week for Mr. Zeise.

In introducing the topic, Pompeani said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is “probably going to suspend [Vick] for the rest of the season, the whole year. Is he right to do that given the fact this guy has not been convicted of anything?” Alexander answered: “Absolutely. When you’re indicted by the federal government, you’re going down. Since 1987 they have a 92 percent conviction rate.”

Zeise took an opposing view. “It’s really a sad day in this country when somehow … Michael Vick would have been better off raping a woman if you look at the outcry of what happened. Had he done that, he probably would have been suspended for four games and he’d be back on the field. But because this has become a political issue, all of a sudden the commissioner has lost his stomach for it.”

I don’t know what the best part of the article is: Zeise’s comments or the fact that the apology from the newspaper was penned by the lovable Bob Smizik.

This fails to explain why Pitt coverage has always been a little bit behind from the P-G. Meanwhile, Kevin Gorman over at the Trib does an excellent job and keeps from being a complete homer.

Sorry about the sporadic posting. Lots of little things in the real world, including hitting the road tomorrow and more travel plans for next week. There are days when being a one-man global content provider can be a bit tricky.

You know, as bad as Pitt had been in the 90s, at least the local papers knew enough to send someone to cover the Media Days.  Cinci gets to a bowl, has their team selected by the media for 5th in the Big East this season (Pitt, 6th), has season ticket sales actually getting a noticeable bump, and they still can’t  get the local media to care to even spare the cash to send a beat writer to the event. — really pissing off new coach Brian Kelly.
Hell, the Altoona Daily Mirror actually sent a reporter to do a piece on Derek Kinder and Pitt along with a more general Big East overview.
Discussion with Pitt is muted, unless you consider getting tips on how to eat lobster from Dave Wannstedt vital news. This bit is worth chewing over (sorry).

When asked how many freshman players would be contributors for the Panthers this season, Wannstedt replied, “Seven guys will play for us right away.”

Hmm. Maybe McCoy, Jacobson,  DeCicco, Hargrove, Caragein, Jones… and who else?

Some more from the basketball camps as Coach Dixon shuttled from Akron to Philly for the camps. On Monday he was at the Rbk U camp watching Ashton Gibbs. Not to mention Travon Woodall and Eloy Vargas. Vargas finished the camp strong.

Ashton Gibbs was also the subject of a lead story out of New Jersey.

“I think I fit in well there,” Gibbs said in between games at the elite Reebok University showcase. “They told me I would be a Ronald Ramon-type player — play the one and two, play tough defense and try to get some buckets on the offensive end. I think I can run up and down, but Pitt slows it down and they’re physical. That’s definitely my style of play.”

Like the gritty Ramon, Gibbs is a quintessential combo guard. He is neither a true point nor a pure scorer, but he can fill either roll on any given possession.

At the three-day Reebok Camp, which features 120 of the best players in the county, Gibbs ran the point in scrimmages and was one of the few guards who made an effort to set up a half-court offense.

With Pitt coach Jamie Dixon watching from the front row of bleachers, he also buried jumpers when the defense sagged.

“He’s very steady and he knows how to make his teammates better,” NJ Hoops publisher Jay Gomes said. “It’s funny because earlier in his career he was more of a ball-handler than a shooter, but he’s become a very good shooter.”

Nice.

Dealing with the present, Darnell Dodson is indeed qualified this year and is already taking summer classes at Pitt. ‘

Another incoming player this season, Bradley Wanamaker, did not qualify for the US Men’s Under-19 team.

I suppose, part of why I’m still a bit more focused on basketball is that the I’ve been putting a way too early FanHouse BlogPoll  together and posting the teams this week. Pitt came in at #18, and I had to give objectivity a shot in discussing them today.
