Only You Can Keep the Begging Brief

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 8:52 am

Decent start to pledge/begging week. 12 donations via PayPal and 6 check pledges. Hopefully there can be a steady flow like this all week.

There was a question why I do the pledge drive in April rather than sometime in the beginning of training camp or basically any other point when traffic is going to be noticeably higher,  people (hopefully) are more excited about Pitt athletics and by extension this site, and thus more eager to contribute. Obviously, I have given this some thought.

There are a few reasons. The first goes to my own distaste for having to do this. Writing posts to justify giving me money to operate something I love, necessarily descends in to a bit of self-promotion and self-importance. I’m perfectly willing to have others speak highly of me and talk about how great I am, but I remain uncomfortable doing it for myself. Now that I think about it, this might be why some people speak of themselves in the 3d person when they get self-aggrandizing. Gives them a sense of detachment from the obvious arrogance. But I digress.

Another reason is time. When August rolls around, and pretty much through the end of March, there is usually plenty to post. And there’s a good chance I’m going to fall behind at points. Writing extra posts that don’t hit on actual Pitt athletics is one more thing to put me behind. And then I’m trying to convince people to give when I can’t even keep up with the news. Just doesn’t look good.

The final reason is that I hate pledge drives. I hate hearing them on the radio or on TV. I get the necessity (obviously), but they still annoy me. And I imagine plenty of you don’t like them. The constant interruptions and disruptions to the routine. Delaying news or entertainment. Ugh. So I’d rather just do it during a period that is relatively calmer and less intrusive.

Time to Bleg

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 9:52 am

If you have been reading this site for more than two years, then you may know what time of the year it is. It is time for me to ask for financial help.

This site is a joyous time suck for me. My wife is remarkably understanding about the time and obsession I spend on the site and following Pitt athletics. The one rule is that while it can suck time, it can’t suck the money. Therefore, every two years in April I do a week or two of asking for contributions to keep the site going.

The costs are primarily devoted to site upkeep, server costs and updating/upgrading the computer I use. There has been some discussion of trying to set aside a home football game as a PittBlather tailgating event this year. A chance for many of us to meet. That would be great, and some of the donations would go towards the cost of that.

There are two ways to contribute. You can click the PayPal icon on the right sidebar. The other way is e-mail me at PittBlather-at-gmail-dot-com for my address, and send a check.

There is no set amount to send. It is whatever you feel comfortable .

I’ll be running a reminder post each day this week. Hopefully the need to beg uncomfortably will only have to go for one week.

Just Disrupted

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 10:39 am

No the basketball season has not beaten me down so far I stopped posting. The offline world has conspired against me. Some family stuff. Kids being sick –which of course led to me getting taken down as well.

Then the topped being my car abruptly giving up the ghost. So I am trying to work quickly to replace my car without being reckless and stupid.

Hopefully I will resume consistent posting soon.

Quick Word About Comment System

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 1:12 pm

As you probably know, the comment system went ka-blooey last week. I’ve since made some alterations to fix and address a lot lot comment spam that was worming its way into posts.

The new system seems to be working well, but there is one significant change. If you are new to commenting or use more than one computer to post comments, then there may be a delay on seeing your comment posted. The first comment will be sent to “pending” for approval. Once I approve that first comment, your comments will start posting immediately.

Obviously the one flaw is that I have to be on the site to approve, and there will be some time gaps depending on when the comment was made and when I get on the computer. It isn’t that you did something wrong (unless you did, and I previously banned you). It is that I can be lazy.

Site Problems

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 2:13 pm

Seems that one of my spam comment filters has started to go wonky. That’s why comments are getting error statements. I’ve disabled the offending plug-in for the moment to allow comments to go through. I’ll try to muddle through and figure out what to do to fix this.

Reminder on the Rules

Okay, folks, time for me to be a bit of an asshole.

I know that emotions are running a little hot right now. That’s fine. Debates can get heated. Disagreements are normal.

That said, sock-puppetry is flat out unacceptable. There have been a couple instances of that this week. If you can’t make your arguments without pretending you are more than just you, then just stop now.

This seems to flair up every so often. I don’t require a verified account to comment on this site. Part of it is simply trying to trust everyone. Part is not wanting to be responsible for the information. And a good chunk of it is my own personal dislike for having to register at sites.

That doesn’t make you anonymous. I do have a fair amount of information about each comment based on the wordpress blog set-up. So it doesn’t take much for me to figure out when people are playing games.

If you list a real e-mail address, I will be nice enough to send you an e-mail first — especially if I think you don’t have a real intent to deceive — asking you to knock it off. Of course if you do it without a real-email address, I will make it known who you are and what you are doing.

If you don’t acknowledge or keep playing the game, then I will ban you.

I really have an intense dislike of that behavior and will not waste my time trying to police it.

Thanks.

Volvo Big East Fan Challenge #2: What To Do?

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 1:08 pm

Another draft and open solicitation for suggestions before the final answer. I will keep mentioning and begging for your help as the Pitt rep for Volvo‘s Biggest Fan in the Big East contest. The contest is a mix of popularity  — so remember to go and vote for me in Volvo’s Biggest Fan in the Big East — and by winning challenges.

The challenges generally take the form of posting responses to their questions. They will judge the responses and decide which wins each time. This time around, the Volvo challenge is to “Pick 5 or more things that you have to do when you return to you’re Alma Mater.” These are the places, bars, things to do and eat when you go back to Pitt.

Ignore the Trolling Ass

Well, I guess it is a sign of influence and attention. Not the best kind. Apparently some asshole has opened a twitter account with the name of this site. It’s presumably some Hoopie prick because the jist of it is to pretend I want Todd Graham fired.

If you don’t know, I tweet under @chasrich27, not the blog name.

I’m not bothering to even link to the guy, but I figure I should make it clear that this is a fake account. Please, don’t give the troll the attention he wants. Don’t get baited into responding. Just ignore him.

Thanks.

I’m Okay, Really

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 10:34 pm

It’s just been a week. It isn’t how I anticipated this week going.

Not with this week being the 9-year anniversary of the blog actually marking the 9 year anniversary of this blog (apparently that is supposed to be pottery, so I guess it’s time for a new Pitt mug for the morning coffee). Not with the Big East Media Day and all the hullabaloo that surrounds it. Not with yet another transfer to Pitt football in Tom Ricketts. Not with erstwhile Pitt basketball commit Jaylen Bond rediscovering his desire to go to college this year and committing to Texas. Now Fear the Stache is joining the Pitt Script Blog — which is a very good thing for Bryan and Brian. So much that is going on, and next week starts Pitt training camp. And I’ve been MIA.

It’s just been a confluence of things. I’ve been covering for some people on vacation at work. My parents came out to stay with us for the week. I’ve been spending all the spare time working on home projects with my dad during this week, because he isn’t content just playing with his grandkids. He has to keep busy with other things, and I have to help so he doesn’t fall over from a stroke. Plus, getting all other things out of the way so I can enjoy a trip to the ‘Burgh this weekend for a buddy’s bachelor party.

I appreciate the e-mails that were concerned for my well being. Worried that something bad had happened to me. I’m sorry to not have posted something about it sooner. I honestly thought I was going to get some time to post. Instead it has been a very, very crazy week.

Normalcy will return shortly — as soon as we can figure out what is normal.

Blog-Sitters

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 6:03 am

I’m heading out of town for a few days. Going to Chicago for a graduation (quarter system) and stretching it out for a bit of a family vacation.

That means I’m actually taking a planned break from posting. Not to worry, though, I’ve made arrangements for some neighbors to come by and make sure everything is doing fine. The good folks at the Fighting Wannstaches and The Incline Blog will be posting here. In addition SilverPanther in NYC has a special series of posts over the coming week that I’m very excited to see.

Heck, odds are you will barely notice I was gone.

Downtime

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 3:37 pm

Finally, sort of, slowly. You probably noticed this site was unavailable today. Or perhaps you caught me complaining on Twitter. The site had a second straight day of server issues.

This was a miserable issue — I’m told — and is still being worked on. So the site may go right back down.

Needless to say, I’m definitely looking forward to going to the Map Room for a beer and a chance to meet some other Pitt folk in the Cleveland area tonight.

Host Difficulties

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 11:39 am

Sorry, my host suffered a particularly ill-timed outage today. I haven’t been able to do anything. And I know the site has been down. Hopefully this has finally passed.

Bowl Challenge Down to Two

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 7:02 am

Forget the coaching search for a moment. There’s one football game left to be played, and more importantly a contest with the outcome not decided.

After everything, the Pitt Blather Bowl Challenge has only two people capable of winning the whole thing.

Presently leading is N.Caffas with a score of 442. He has Oregon in the BCS Championship with a confidence pick of 8 points. If the Ducks win, he finishes with 450 points and the win.

Only one entry can catch him — in other words picked Auburn and with enough confidence to beat 442 points. Lee in Altoona sits with 430 points, but picked Auburn with a confidence level of 15. An Auburn win would put Lee at 445 points, the win and my tailgating crew would never hear the end of it if this happens.

Needless to say: Go Ducks.

LiveBlog Saturday Mayhem

In case you didn’t realize it — and given the distraction — that is understandable, there is Pitt’s bowl game at noon down in Birmingham against Kentucky, with an overlapping game at the Pete at 2pm with Marquette.

I’m not sure it is a good idea or practical to have just one liveblog with the two games overlapping. That would get real messy.

I would simply set up 2 different liveblogs with Luke running one and I would handle the other. Unfortunately, this is one of the few days Luke is unavailable for liveblog duties.

So this means I am looking to see if there are any volunteers to operate as a producer of the football or basketball liveblog.

I’m thinking that the best approach would be to have one person help on football and one on basketball. I would start on the football and then leave it in the new guy/gal’s hands to finish while I went over to help get the basketball side going.

Here’s a basic outline of what you need to do:

— Have a Cover It Live account.

— Be able to watch a game, comment, and moderate comments as they come in — all at once.

— Moderate means to control the flow. Not all comments need to go through and keep things relatively calm and not a shouting match.

So, if you are interested. Shoot me an e-mail at PittBlather-at-gmail-dot-com with an explanation as to why you would be the good fit.

Thanks. I’ll respond to all inquiries later this evening.
