No Romeus

As most of you have already heard, Greg Romeus’ back has gotten so bad that it requires surgery.

“Our top priority is doing what is best for Greg,” coach Dave Wannstedt said. “After consulting with him, his family and our medical staff, it was determined that immediate surgery is the best option for Greg both personally and athletically. We expect him to have a full recovery and return for the conclusion of the season.”

Romeus has a herniated bulging disk in his lower back — which kind of makes it stunning that he even played in the Utah game.

As you can expect there is a fair amount of doom and gloom for Pitt’s chances to win the Big East with Romeus out for essentially the season — regardless of what Coach Wannstedt is saying. I think this season has shown demonstrated that Wannstedt, like any other football coach (pro or college) is going to feed a lot of vague to outright lies regarding the severity of injury  and timetable for the return of players.

Chris Gates at The Fan is a fan of Brandon Lindsey and thinks he can do the job. I think Lindsey will play well, but you don’t just plug in a guy at Romeus’ spot and get the same production. Sheard will now be facing more double teams and the entire D-line will need to step up pressure.

The DE position is supposed to be one of Pitt’s strongest and deepest spots. That will now be tested. There will also be pressure on Coach Wannstedt to consider burning the redshirt on T.J. Clemmings. He was the gem of the 2010 recruiting class and there is more than a week before the Miami game.  Opportunities abound for the DE’s to make their move this week.

As a final note. Considering the start Dion Lewis has had (and whispers he is hurt) and now the injury to Romeus, this whole individual site system for star players has not worked out real well. Not saying there is any real connection, but maybe as a precaution the Pitt Athletic Department could take down Jon Baldwin’s for a while.

I would not give up on the season just yet. This defense is better equipped to lose linemen than our offense. Against Utah we also saw more blitzing than we have seen in a while from a Wannstedt led team. This may become more common now that Romeus is out for most if not all of the season. It is really tough to see him wind up in this situation given his decision to skip the NFL draft this past season. I wish him a speedy and full recovery!

Is it possible for him to get a medical redshirt?

Comment by matt in orlando 09.15.10 @ 7:46 am

It is possible for Romeus to have a 6th season if he successfully petitions the NCAA for a Medical waiver… however why would he want to?

When it comes down to the root of the matter the sole reason Romeus came back was to better his NFL draft status. I’d think that the chances of his doing permanent injury at this level at least equals that now – his best course is to try to get himself into the NFL as quickly as possible and roll the dice there.

Comment by Reed 09.15.10 @ 8:15 am

This is Romeus’s second back surgery. He had back surgery in the Spring of 2009 and was able to return for a great 2009 season. But 2 back surgeries is tough to get through

Comment by Tom K. 09.15.10 @ 8:38 am

BTW – I think we’ll be OK at DE even under these circumstances. Romeus was good but certainly not at the level of talent that is irreplaceable… honestly, I kind of wondered what all the national hoopla was all about with Romeus anyway.

I think people were seduced by his ‘measurables’ rather than his actual production anyway. He had six solo sacks last season – three alone against Louisville and zero after the RU game – meaning he went the whole second half of the season without one. His solo TFL total was nine – again with three against Louisville and again, virtually disappeared in the second half of the season.

Here is a telling note – against our toughest opponents in those late season games he had a grand total of one TFL and zero sacks against ND, WVU and Cincy.

That said, Bennett will be earning his paycheck this season.

Comment by Reed 09.15.10 @ 8:39 am

It hasn’t been reported that he has a “bulging disk” or what the extent of his back problem is.

“Pitt senior defensive end Greg Romeus will have back surgery on Thursday to repair a disc in his lower back.” — Ray Fitapaldo.

Since he has played in less than 30% of the games this season I think he is eligible, however they expect him to recover in 6-8 wks and if he plays after surgery would invalidate the 30% rule.

His best course of action has yet to be determined. I am sure what his best course of action is will be determined after his recovery.

Comment by shadyforpresident 09.15.10 @ 8:42 am

Reed I agree. While Romeus is an outstanding talent, his injury will not make or break Pitts season. I hope he can fully recover and get to the next level.

Sometimes adversity brings out the best in a team.

Comment by Coach Ditka 09.15.10 @ 9:21 am

Shady – to be clear, he is not eligible for a medical redshirt since he already redshirted his freshman year. He could petition for a medical hardship to receive a 6th year of eligibility. The NCAA has been inconsistent in its approach to these requests, but generally does not grant them unless an injury causes a player to miss multiple seasons.

Reed raises a good point as to whether Romeus would really want another year in college. I think that if he can get back before the end of the year and/or keep his draft stock high enough that he believes he will go in the first three rounds, he is better off taking his chances at the next level.

Comment by Pantherman13 09.15.10 @ 9:30 am

Tough break for Romeus. Here’s a guy who passed on the NFL draft to return to school and now is in a very difficult situation. I’m certainly no expert on the requirements for a redshirt, however, it is my understanding that becuase he was a redshirt his freshman year (based upon strategic decision and not an injury) he would have to apply for a hardship. I believe a medical redshirt is usually (and I say usually because the NCAA is all over the map with its decisions) granted in situations where a player suffers injuries causing him to miss multiple seasons. Someone posted a very interesting question on earlier and that is whether Romeus would want to return for another season, I guess that depends on a lot of variables…

Comment by Jason05Pitt 09.15.10 @ 9:43 am

Pantherman13,
Medical redshirt, while not technically, correct is used on the boards interchangeably with Medical hardship. The point being, is he eligible for another year? I just don’t feel like correcting them anymore. Gun received a 6th year of eligibility. Mike Cook did not because he played in 34% of the games that year which had nothing to do with missing multiple seasons (it is not in the regulations as far as I can tell).

Your right on with the “if” part. I’m sure he’ll weight all his option with family, coaches and medical staff when the time comes. To keep all options open he/Pitt must file for the medical hardship. All I’m saying is, let’s not write him off just yet.

Comment by shadyforpresident 09.15.10 @ 10:00 am

Disc injuries are very hard to figure out. I had an MRI about a month ago and it revealed two herniated discs. For about a week after I injured my back I could barely walk. For four weeks later I could probably run a 5k if I pushed it. I still do not understand the entire healing process associated with a disc injury. I wish Romeus a fast recovery that’s for sure. I know he will be receiving the best possible treatment at UPMC so maybe his return is possible towards the end of the year. Either way, Wanny did the right looking out for Romeus’ long-term health. Go Pitt!

Comment by Jason05Pitt 09.15.10 @ 10:05 am

What (if any) effect does the potential (and probably) NFL lockout have on his decision? Is it better to sit out waiting for the NFL to reach an agreement or is it better to try for a 6th year.

I really wonder what effect this lockout is going to have on college. Will a guy like Jon Baldwin stay for his senior season because of the lockout? I hope so!

Comment by BnG 09.15.10 @ 10:07 am

Jason, did Wanny do the right thing for Romeus letting him play in the Utah game?

There was a term we used in high school football a long time ago: “Ice it, Gouge(the trainer’s name).” I don’t know a lot of things here, but I would at least question the decision.

Comment by steve 09.15.10 @ 10:29 am

Who knows…A lot of that depends on information we (or atleast I’m not) privy to. For example, if Romeus told Wanny he was ready to play and at that time he did not have an MRI done, I guess it is possible that Wanny could take his word. I’m really not sure. I played in multiple games back in high school (yes, I know it is not nearly the same situation) with a serious back injury and my coaches, and family for that matter, did not know the extent of the injury because I decided not to let anyone know the pain I was in. I just hope Wanny would do what is best for all players, even those without an NFL future.

Comment by Jason05Pitt 09.15.10 @ 10:43 am

Agree with you totally, Jason.

Comment by steve 09.15.10 @ 10:48 am

I dont believe we really have a DE concern. More of a concern for Romeus personally – that’s it. The spot is more than covered by a solid rotation and more than likely, one of them will step up and in a few weeks we swill be saying Romeus who (or this is how it SHOULD happen)?

As far as injuries in general, good team rally around the injuries and players step up. This is what Wanny’s recruiting prowess should result in – having players ready to step in at a given moment and not skipping a beat. Look at Graham in for Dion. Players have to perform when asked to. This is a sign of a great program. Step up Pitt!

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Pitt it IS 09.15.10 @ 10:58 am

So is the Coaching staff lying to us about the extent of the injury associated with D.Lewis? Is Mr. Lewis soon to be out for the year as well, with his undisclosed “minor” injury? It was evident several months ago that Mr. Romeus’ back was injured, and injured beyond basic “aches and pains,” yet every member of the coaching staff brushed it off and covered it up….why?

Why didn’t the team just address this medical condition early on instead of waiting? This just smells bad and makes me question Wanny and the choices he has made that much more….

Comment by Marco 09.15.10 @ 11:21 am

Steve, that one isn’t on Wanny. If he’s cleared to play by the medical staff and your the coach, you play him. If they thought it would do him further damage to play, the medical staff should not clear him and Wanny can’t play him.

Comment by Henry Hynoceros 09.15.10 @ 11:22 am

OK, Henry, whomever…

Comment by steve 09.15.10 @ 12:31 pm

Was it wishful thinking that delayed his surgery? If he had it in August He would have been back before Thanksgiving. I find it hard to believe that he would get to miss the majority of camp without some serious diagnostics being run.

I’m more disappointed with Wanny saying he was excused from New Hampshire due to a “personal problem”. Wanny had always struck me as a straight shooter. Let’s face it, we were not really fooled but a casual observer may have read something behaviorally negative into it. As most “personal problems” usually turn out to be.

Mason has been demoted to 2nd team; Gruder will start in the middle for Miami, with Williams and Roberts on the outside. See:

More bad news for Pitt. This time the wound was self-inflicted. Mason needs to use better judgment. Gruder will be in the middle, and I believe Williams will be strong side and Roberts will be weak side. Who is next on the LB depth chart?? Is Manny Williams in the mix at all?

Comment by Jason05Pitt 09.15.10 @ 1:16 pm

According to rivals.com, here is a link to the depth chart

As a pain management physician, I can say that letting him play against Utah was sound, provided he didn’t have any major neurologic issues going into the game. Apparently, he had epidural steroid injections that didn’t work. In any event, it is difficult to gauge disc herniations and their response to treatment: after two years, folks who have had discectomies do about as well as those who received non-operative care. And while there are a host of studies that help with prognosis, it is still hit-or-miss, which is why so many people have back operations and fail to improve. Anyway, hope he does well.

Comment by Gas 09.15.10 @ 3:05 pm

Different subject..but something that will be interesting going forward…The Pirate schedule for next year is out and they have home games scheduled for the 10th and the 24th.
link to mlb.mlb.com

Pitt has games currently scheduled for both those days as well..which in the past has always meant a noon start for Pitt…however the 24th is the Notre Dame game. There is no way ESPN is going to have Notre Dame play at noon…I see a Thursday night Notre Dame next year….which is almost just as bad as a noon start. (Has Notre Dame ever played on a Thursday during the regular season ???)

Comment by milo bloom 09.15.10 @ 3:34 pm

Thanks for your input Gas. As a chiropractor who deals with these type of patients daily I fully agree with your comments. Since the great majority of these patients get well without surgical intervention it was a reasonable gamble to try nonsurgical methods if there were no neurological deficits. I think it is patently unfair to accuse Wanny of game playing or incompetence without fully knowing his full clinical picture. HTP

rough september for pitt. everything can change with a strong performance against miami on thursday. come on panthers. we need this one. hopefully sunseri, baldwin, and graham/lewis can have career days.

Comment by Omar 09.15.10 @ 4:13 pm

Thanks for the info, Turk and Gas. I know a lot more than I did before.

You guys should maybe team up. Howsabout “Turk and Gas Do Backs Best.” Or maybe a rock group.

Pitt played at Vandy on a Thursday in the 90s. Interestingly, they just announced Pitt-Fla International as a 3:30/8 ESPN game. Must be some ESPNU crapfest-I can’t imagine them putting it on one of the main networks.

Opps ND at Vandy
