NLI Day 2010

Sure it’s not quite Weasel Stomping Day, but it is one of the big days. The days where Rivals.com and Scout.com find out if all those stress tests on their servers were correct.

Here’s where we already stand with signed NLIs, courtesy of the charts from PantherLair.com and PantherDigest.com.

Listed as signed NLI by both sites:

  • Saheed Imoru (JUCO already enrolled)
  • Brendan Carozzoni
  • Mark Myers
  • Dan Schneider
  • Mark Rotheram
  • Arthur Doakes
  • Brandon Ifill
  • Aaron Donald
  • Eric Williams
  • Salath Williams
  • Bryan Murphy
  • Brandon Sacco

9:24 update:

  • Andrew Carswell
  • K’Wuan Willams

9:30 Update:

  • Kevin Weatherspoon

9:37 Update:

  • K.K. (or Khaynin Mosely-) Smith

9:47 Update:

  • T.J. Clemmings

9:52 Update:

  • Derrick Burns
  • Todd Thomas (take 2)

10:14 Update:

  • Anthony Gonzalez
  • Andre Givens

I’ll be updating most of the morning.

UPDATE 10: 53: 21 of 24 commits are listed as signed.

I’m not sure if T.J. Peeler will be actually signing. It isn’t that he is not committed to Pitt, it is that he has an ACL tear in his left knee. It will take nearly a year to rehab. If he doesn’t sign and goes to prep school, he preserves his full scholarship and redshirt options. If he does sign it may be purely symbolic. Of course, he might still opt to attend Pitt  and take it as a  medical redshirt in 2010.

As for Jeff Knox and Shane Johnson, both attend DeMatha which is closed today. That may delay the signing or at least news of them.

UPDATE 11:25: While still waiting to see if the snow-bound recruits can reach a fax machine, there is one minor, potential addition. Pitt apparently has tried to get in late on Taj Alexander out of Exton, PA. He’s a Rutgers verbal but has yet to send in his LOI.

UPDATE 11:52: Okay, courtesy of Zeise at P-G, Johnson and Knox will probably have their LOI’s in around noon. Peeler is also trying to make arrangements to send his in.

I’m just unclear on one thing. Why a fax? Wouldn’t a signed, scanned NLI,  attached to an e-mail in do the job?

UPDATE 1:20: Looks like a 2 of the 3 made their way to a Kinkos or something. This is Rivals.com only right now but listed as signed are:

  • T.J. Peeler
  • Jeff Knox

That just leaves Shane Johnson and the 2010 class is signed and the angst can begin for 2011.

UPDATE 1:40: Okay, Rivals.com took Knox off the signed list and moved him back to unsigned with Johnson. That kind of makes sense since they are DeMatha teammates and might do this together. Maybe they should call their other teammate, Arie Kouandijo to find where he went to fax his LOI to Alabama.

UPDATE 1:50: According to Zeise, everyone is now signed. 24-24.

  • Jeff Knox
  • Shane Johnson

Now it’s time to turn attention to that little ole’ basketball game tonight…

Congratulations to the NEW RECRUITS. Look forward to seeing you performing on the field.

Namaste! (For all you Lost fans)

Off topic, but I went down to the Cavs/Grizzlies game last night hoping to see Sam Young. Unfortunately, he was out with an allergic reaction. He did not make the trip or simply did not attend the game. The Grizzlies were destroyed by LBJ & Company. A few UCONN players were on the Grizzlies. Rudy Gay…still a menace. Thabeet…still a pansy ass!

FYI– Dejuan and the Spurs will be in Cleveland on Monday, March 8th @ 7PM if anyone wants to make the treck to see the Big Fella in action. Hopefully, he won’t be injured!

Congrats to all new Pitt recruits!

Thanks for the updates, Chas. I’ll be checking in hourly.

Not that I’m a recruiting geek or anything… err…

OFF TOPIC: ANY MORE WORD ON STRENGTH COACH BUDDY MORRIS MOVING ON TO THE REDSKINS?

Comment by Bossdaws 02.03.10 @ 10:46 am

Chas,

did we end up getting Shane Johnson, Jeff Knox Jr. and T.J. Peeler?

Comment by O Fries 02.03.10 @ 10:46 am

O Fries–DC Metro area had overnight snowfall (4-6 inches) and public and private schools are closed. That’s probably what’s delaying those 3 getting their LOI’s in.

Last month there were “RUMORS” of Dieffenbach rethinking his commitment to Penn State, I assume those were just that…rumors?

Comment by winedogs 02.03.10 @ 11:17 am

Just checking around the internet.

Rivals has our recruiting class ranked 33rd (2nd in Big East behind WVU).

I don’t know where ESPN has us ranked because they only have their top 25 up.

Scout, God love ’em, has our class ranked 16th.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 02.03.10 @ 11:50 am

I guess a good thing is that no BE team is in the ESPN top 25. Just in case, a bad thing might be that 3 Big 10 teams are.

T. Aleander is signed with RU according to Panther Digest. According to the same site, neither Ricketts or Dieffenbach have signed yet with PSU…Probably just a snow delay as well.

Jason Pinkston Pitt to the big ten in 2012… Sorry Psu can’t run forever!!

Speaking of basketball, there’s a rumor that the Detroit Pistons will be leaving the Big 10 and coming to Pittsburgh.

Comment by Spanky 02.03.10 @ 4:34 pm

Welcome to all of our new recruits. Congrats to the entire coaching staff for making this a relatively drama free recruiting season. For me, the program is taking on a definite perception of stability, that will hopefully bring long term success.

Panther rooters are probably very pleased with this year’s recruiting class. It is well balanced between offense and defense and between skilled players and the real heroes in the trenches. Pitt’s coaches have ventured outside of Pa. to attract quality gridders from Ohio and New Jersey among other states. I note there is no recruit from New York which is a bit of a puzzlement when one considers the stars from that state in recent years. Most of the new faces will be red-shirting and seen on the Scout Team next season. However, it was a banner year for the recruiting and Pitt is continuing its arduous climb BACK TO THE TOP. Congratulations all around. George from Columbus

I just watched a video highlights clip of one of our newly signed recruits. It is a QB, his name is Mark Meyers out of Ohio. You gotta check this kid out on the official Panther athletics website. Arm strength like this I haven’t seen out of a high school kid for like 30 years. Who does he remind me of? Can anyone say “Marino”! I know, thats quite a comparision, but if you’re old as dirt like I am and still have your longterm memory intact, you tell me he doesn’t remind you of a young Marino. What a quick release and he can throw that ball on a frozen rope. This recruiting class looks like the Panthers are in good shape for years to come.

Have to admit, it took me a while to warm to Wanny as head coach. Those first few years were frustrating. But, the past two seasons and the way this NLI Day closed have proven to me that the man has a plan which should keep us in contention for Top 10 and conference championships – regardless of which conference it is – for years. And, that keeps you in the hunt for a national championship.

He has solid coaches who seem to like working for him and kids with talent, brains and good character. That’s a sign of a winning program.

As far as this class’ ranking versus PSU, WVU and others, I have two words for that – Dion Lewis.

Hail to PITT!

Comment by TampaT 02.04.10 @ 8:59 am

Great – linemen and linebackers. I don’t trust any Wanny Qbs until he proves he can develop a good, consistent one (he never has in his career). Good luck if they move to the Big 11 – without an offense there you are screwed.
