My Civil War

I would love to tell you about how my wife — a Cinci grad — and I have been giving each other crap about the game on Saturday. Unfortunately, my wife is a rather standard Cinci fan of her time. She only cares about how the basketball team is finally ranked. In fact when I have a Cinci home game on TV, she still mutters about how much money they wasted renovating Nippert Stadium when she was there. Needless to say, she is probably hoping Pitt wins on Saturday so that I’m in a better mood when I get home.

Not that I think many Cinci fans are that excited about their football team. Probably the same numbers that are thrilled that their mascot is a finalist in the Capitol One Mascot Challenge.

Still, how much should I make fun of Cinci fans when Heinz Field is still not sold out for Saturday —  1800 tickets left?

You want Coach Wannstedt banging on your door? He’s willing if you are a student.

Excuses of the noon start. Traffic and construction issues. Complaints about not being respected by ESPN. It has reached something of a breaking point for me.  It isn’t some chicken-egg thing. The only way it changes is by the fans showing up in force and Pitt playing well. Either show up or STFU.

Final thing on the noon start on Saturday. It’s a good thing. It is a pure national game on ABC. The most important one in the time slot. All the other official conference championship games were set and contracted before the season started. I have complained and I immensely dislike the Big East’s TV deal with the Mouse Monopoly on the football side. That said, this is not one of those points where it is working against Pitt.

Growing up in Cincinnati, where almost half of my high school graduating class attended UC, this week deffinitely brings many opportunities to talk trash. However, with UC having an outside chance at a national championship game appearance, is it wrong to almost want them to win? Yes, Pitt getting a BCS bowl berth would be great, and a loss would most likely mean a Car Care Bowl. But all it will take is one upset for UC to be in the title game, and they were my team for the first 18 years of my life. I’ve now been a panther for 9 years, and I’ll be wearing my Pitt gear at the game, but I may just sit back and watch it more so than cheer loudly. If it weren’t for that Big East realignment I woudn’t have to worry about this situation. I’m torn. The one thing that won’t make me feel too bad if UC misses out on a NC is how arrogant many fans down here have gotten in the last 3 years.

The AD opened up some special seats in the south end zone for a “bargain” at $75 a piece for Panther Club members. Not sure if those are included in the 1800 number or not, but since I paid $99 for a whole season lower deck on the other end, it seems a bit high, and a possibility that those last seats might not sell.

Nick, hate to say it, but you’re with us or against us.

Root for Pitt with everything you have.

Yeah Nick, Go all out in your love of the Panthers! Don’t waiver, be strong!

Besides, Cincy is out of the running for the NC. If Texas is upset then TCU will get the chance to play the Bama-Gator winner over Cincy.

Maybe I’ll just sing Sweet Caroline and be done with it. I never dreamed up this scenario when I committed to Pitt. I’ll be near the student section, so maybe I’ll get caught up in the emotion of the game. Students, it’s on you to make sure I’m fired up enough to chear for Pitt.

Comment by Nick 12.01.09 @ 4:42 pm

You can still buy seats in the upper endzone for $35. Bring a friend!

It’s going to be cold at 7AM. Can’t wait!

The South end zone seats are useless unless you’re a papparozzi(sp) At the ND game I watched 99.4% of the game on the Jumbotron.

But I did take some neat pics of Panther notables. And the image of Ray Graham coming right to me for a possible Jersey low 5 endures.

Florida State is pushing to have Bowden’s last game be against WVU in the Gator Bowl. We better beat Cinn or we will get screwed on the Gator bowl invite

Comment by TmGPanther 12.01.09 @ 5:31 pm

We weren’t gonna go to the Gator anyways if we lose, it’s Cincy that would get screwed out of that one if they lost on Saturday IF things go as FSU wishes.

Here’s the thing. They want WVU to play FSU (the 2 teams Bowden coached) in a Florida bowl game (they never specified Gator from what I saw). Now the only FL bowl game that matches Big East vs ACC is the Gator.

However, FSU is only a 6 win team and all of the other slots must be filled by at least 7-5 teams before a 6 win team can go to a bowl game.

WVU being in is no problem, they were probably going to go anyways. But being as though the Gator is a solid 2nd tier bowl (just beneath the BCS bowls), would they even try to challenge this rule to get FSU in for this game?

And if not, is there another, lesser, Florida bowl game that could accomodate these wishes? Would WVU be willing to go to a crappier bowl than the Gator just to honor Bowden?

Do Bowden and FSU even have enough stroke to pull this thing off? Is this just FSU trying to weasel their way into a bowl game they don’t deserve?

Something tells me that they’ll play in the Gator Bowl, but it’s a pretty interesting situation.

Tiger Paul sighting on FSN’s Pitt-Duquesne preview show. Gota miss that guy.

Comment by alcofan 12.01.09 @ 7:36 pm

Life and sporting life affords very few second chances (see Steelers 09). Screw this Cinncy nonsense. Pitt (and every Pitt fan) needs to give this Saturday 110%. It will take all of us and the whole team to pull off this upset. I do NOT care if we have to play Bama or Florida or Duquesne…just win the damn game!

Comment by Dan 72 12.01.09 @ 8:17 pm

Jimbo, Here is the relevant section of the ESPN article.

“Bowden wants his last bowl game to be in Florida, and efforts are under way to try to attain a berth in the Jan. 1 Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, or the Dec. 29 Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, a school official told ESPN.com.

The official also said the school was working with the ACC to try to have the Seminoles (6-6, 4-4 ACC Atlantic) face West Virginia, where Bowden was offensive coordinator from 1966 to 1969, and head coach from 1970 to 1975.”

Comment by TMGPanther 12.01.09 @ 10:05 pm

Bowden seems like a nice guy but FSU doesn’t deserve the Gator Bowl. They’d probably lose by 2 or 3 touchdowns to WV anyways.

I am getting sick of all the excuses we Pitt fans are giving about not going to games. I can’t believe we are this negative/moody and excuse driven. Big East Championship on the line and we are not sold out?

Nick…root for Cincy. don’t need ya. I could see this dilemma a few years ago with WVU going to the National Champ and being good for the Big East. But to contemplate rooting for Cincy this year, when we have a BCS game at stake? Makes no sense

Comment by BDuBB 12.02.09 @ 9:33 am

Complaining about fan attendance does no good on this site, because the people you are trashing don’t care enough to visit this link. Give the tickets away to local high school kids if you have to, but fill the stadium. I recommend doing this for every home game. Create a young fanbase and maybe some of those young high students will be the football stars of the future. They would at least frequent the concession stands and help create an atmosphere that we all long for. It beats looking at all the empty seats we stare at every Saturday.

Comment by ltl49 12.02.09 @ 10:02 am

The problem isn’t just the ticket sales, but actually getting people to attend. Last I heard, there were about 1800 tickets unsold. That means that approximately 65,000 have been sold, and if everyone of those shows up, you won’t notice the 1800. The embarrassing part for Pitt is that they always seem to have a large percentage of no-shows, even on good weather days. I just don’t know what could/should be done about this.

On another note, I read on Brian Bennett’s blog on ESPN that Pitt did not sell out its allotment of tickets to WVU. Does anyone know if this is true? We were sitting in the Pitt section, and it seemed like there were many more Pitt fans than 2 years ago. All in all, it seemed like a decent sized representation. I know several Pitt fans that travel all over the country to go to Pitt games but will not go to Morgantown because of the behavior of the locals, but in general it seemed like a good showing.

Comment by Pantherman13 12.02.09 @ 10:15 am

To be clear, let me state up front that I will be there Saturday as I have been all year. OK. I am also a Steelers season ticket holder and I made myself a promise that I was going to be “all-in” this year for both Pitt and the Steelers, and I was. And I am exhausted. Not to mention much lighter in the wallet. Once I get to Heinz the experience is great, but getting there and getting home is unreal (I come from Butler). There is obviously no cooperation among PennDot, the Steelers, the university and the city. Has anybody tried to come down either 279 or 8/28 to come to and leave a game – time sucking and frustrating. I missed the turn for Gold Lot 1 for the Notre Dame game and it took me 55 minutes (55!!!) to circle the stadium and get to my space.

This is not a post to complain, but to point out that a lot of Pitt ticket buyers are also Steeler ticket buyers and it is just too taxing to do both. It is not because people don’t want to, it is a simple issue of how much personal time do you want to invest as a fan and where does that time go. Next year, and I know this will make a lot of you mad, I will be there on all Sundays and some Saturdays if I feel up to it. I bleed both black and gold and blue and gold but the pie is only so big.

I also agree with the post on coaching. This is a defining moment for Wannstedt and the program. I hope like the dickens he lets it loose and Pitt wins.

Comment by wally 12.02.09 @ 1:03 pm

Wally, a percentage of the fans may be in your situations, but shamefully many more aren’t. In my opinion, you have a legitimate excuse, but far more don’t. Personally, I enjoy the Steelers on TV, but enjoy the college atmosphere far more, but that’s me. This is America thank God, so do your own thing.

Comment by ltl49 12.02.09 @ 6:01 pm

The unused tickets don’t belong to lazy Panthers fans, they belong to visitors who buy season tickets just to see one game. Nebraska fans did it a few years back. I sat next to some of them and they were thrilled to get to see their team for the low price of a Pitt season ticket.

The domers did it this year, as they do any year that they visit Heinz. To a lesser extent, hoopy fans do it too.
