So, while I was in Pittsburgh enjoying a dominating win by Pitt my wife had to take our son to the pediatric emergency room as he is apparently battling pneumonia. He seems to be responding real well to the medicine, so there is no great danger. It did mean I was on duty to watch and care for him last night and most of the day while the wife got some sleep and down time. Hence the lack of anything for a while.
Dumbest thing I heard during the game. A guy behind me complaining about Bill Stull after he hit Baldwin for the deep touchdown. I would love to be making it up, but it really happened. Apparently the pro was all over the mistakes: Stull double-clutched before throwing, it was not actually in perfect stride plus it was over the wrong shoulder.
Seriously? Why even go to the game if you hate everything and need to be that miserable? It was on the money. In stride. Stull had another great game.
Yet, when Stull threw that pick I swear you could see people in the stands catch their breath. There was murmuring. People began to look around at the rest of the crowd. Waiting to see if anyone and who would boo Stull at that point. When nothing happened there was an exhale.
It was a great effort from the team in all phases. I’ll get more later. After all, there is a bye week to fill the time.
BM small but fast and nobody blocked him. He hits like a truck and had a couple of sacks and stripped the other QB for a fumble. On the only TD that DES had in the 1st half then went for two and ran ran right at BM and he drilled the runner so hard in the backfield that he fell backwards and never took a step forward after being hit.
I am not a scout or coach but he was one of the best players on either team and will be a productive player at Pitt. Hope the coaches go back to DB because that is a very good FB program.
I read that Cignetti uses creative drills to teach Stull the fundamentals, and to have the right mind-set. It reminds me of the approach Bill Walsh of the 49’s used. For example, Walsh had a drill where he taught his receivers to catch the ball one-handed, which made using two hands in a game easy. Noll also stressed fundamentals. Hopefully Pitt will attract QB prospects who recognize the opportunity to take advantage of Cignetti’s coaching, as evidenced in the remarkable improvement of Billy Stull.
BTW, I noticed BJ Daniels has a much stronger arm than Stull and his passes didn’t wobble.
Joel, Pitt has 2 recuits from Bosco — also B Saccco OL. I read an article (possibly Pantherlair) about Pitt’s recuits and how many of them come from winning programs. Note that A Gonzalez is from defending state champ, as is M Myers and B Cazzeloni from St Ignatius who is currently again top-ranked in Ohio, and they have a WR/DB S Williams from B Devittit in Harrisburg (Shady’s school) which is in Top 20 nationally. These are off the top of my head… there are a few more.
Stull everyday and anyday
Just one example: Jarred Holley played on a team with a 12 -2 record that fell to 8 – 4 after he graduated.
I have to say, I was in awe of Stull…every throw but 2 to Shanahan was perfect. Never thought I’d say that…
The Trib. has a Baldwin feature that explains the route by Baldwin.
Baldwin’s 40-yard touchdown from Stull showed his improved recognition. The 6-foot-5 Baldwin improvised his route so he wouldn’t run himself into coverage.
“I was supposed to be running an in-and-up,” he said. “But I got the defensive back so good off the line, I really didn’t have to actually run a route. Last year, I was young. I really didn’t know too much. (On that play), I knew what was going to happen if I beat him off the line. I beat him off the line, and there it was.”
Hahaha, classic. As for the douchenozzle sitting behind you, I would have thrown something at him and pretended it wasn’t me, if I were you.
