I’ll be doing the opposite (except for the part about taping the football game). I don’t really get the hype over an exhibition football game, and why folks would watch that over a basketball game that counts. But to each his own. Go Pitt.

The OSU QB is not supposed to be strong armed either but is substantially better. Hope I’m wrong but I see the Pitt defense wearing down in 2nd half.

Damn it … not only is he weak-armed, he throws off the back foot and I hate the act that he will probably ruin a potential great season next year — just like he is doing this game.

How did Stull even get a scholarship? My 10-year old sister has more pocket presence than this clown. Bench him now, but in Bostick, run the wildcat, just do anything to get Stull off the field.

As bad as Stull has been Cavanaugh has been worse. There is no reason to have more pass attempts than run in the 4th quarter of a game like this.

Has their ever been a more incompetent starting QB than Bill Stull. The play calling didn’t help either. How about the wildcat with only Shady in the backfield; it was moronic. Why not run it with Cross and Shady or LSH and Shady to give the defense something to think about. Wanny needs to show his recruiting chops and get a QB.

disappointing end to a good season. Let’s not forget everything this team did to finish strong. Need to improve at QB and our injury at OL really hurt today–but a great showing by our D. Really feel that the program has turned around–should be good in the BE for years. I do hope they give Sunseri a real shot at the QB job–he may well be the answer.

I’m gonna go the positive route and say that our defense was fantastic today. I mean, do you really think the Oregon State fans are happy with their offense today?

Ok, enough positive bullshit! That game was pure, unadulterated, ASS!!! Both teams, but especially Pitt, should be ashamed of themselves for putting on such a terrible display on national TV.

The offensive line sucked. The quarterbacks were worse, and Shady was average. Out best chance for points was when Porter (I think) nearly ran back that one punt.

On another note, the rarest of rare things happened today: Aaron Berry played a great game.

Ok, watched the game with OSU fans…and they all thought the game was bad…boring…and though they won, they were like, “so what”…almost as though both sides felt bad about the game.

Having said that….Stull was pressured all game long, and though this wasn’t his shining best, i don’t know how much the OL affected him…never heard cbs say “PITT is missing two starting OL”…But heard “The Rodger brothers will be missed”….

Cav should have been throwing to his TEs more over the middle…the long throws weren’t working early, and should have been junked….and late in the game, Cross should have been brought in to run the wildcat…however, second-guessing now won’t change the score.

Overall, a nine win season is a great start…just need to build on it for next year.

What I thought was going to be a great day for Pitt sports turns out to be an okay one. I saw the fire in the eyes of our basketball team, especially Young and Wannamaker. Rutgers could have easily been a trap game and we pulled it out. We took control and won. Unfortunately, today will be remembered as the day our offense scored zip in a bowl game. You have to love that Pitt defense, though, and hope that this year’s 9-4 record can be amped up to 10-3 or 11-2 next year. Remember Harris’ best record in eight seasons was 9-4.

Pitt didn’t start max protecting until the fourth on passing downs and kept throwing the ball deep down the sideline when it was windy. I’ve said all year that Stull was one of the most inaccurate QBs I’ve ever seen on this level of football. You can add least instinctive as well. And the coaches should be ashamed for their lack of adjustments and creativity. And what was the playcalling before the 58-yard field goal try? Did they have that little faith that they couldn’t at least run the ball on a toss or try a short throw? Pitt had injuries on OL, which is all the more reason to not throw the ball deep!!!

You can’t say enough about the defense — despite the fact that OSU was missing a key figure, they were on the darn field about 99% of the game and stood tall. Offense horrible. Play calling horrible. If no adjustments made in the off-season, next year will be a backslide circa early 80s.

Nine wins and a trip to a decent bowl game is a good start. We need to remember how far this team has come and look forward to next year.

Just like Paul Zeise tells us all the time “get used to it, this is the way Wannstedt coaches”. He is loyal t his seniors and his starters no matter what. He, once again, showed why he is not a head coach. Let’s not forget the reason they got a field goal is due to the gawdawful fourth and four call. When the offensive coordinator is not getting it done, somebody (preferrably his boss) needs to intervene before it is too late. Wanny will have 9 long months to try to live this one down. Brian, I am sorry you feel that way. I still think Stull is atrocious, and there is no way a scholarship athlete can perform that poorly and expect not to be critisized. Nobody would be more thrilled than me if Stull had a great year next season, but he won’t. The effort, the desire, the will to win just is not there. Yes, he has very little talent, but Bart Staar, Emmit Smith, and Troy Aikman were not considered the most “talented” players either. I am not comparing Billy to these guys, but I am saying that with enough hard work, he should be at least competant. Same goes for Bostick. Obviously, these kids have no shame.

Put it this way, we went 9-4 this year without getting much out of our QB (although Stull wasn’t playing as poorly around mid-season as he did in the WVU game and today). And even when he did play passably, the receivers dropped a lot of balls.

It was basically all defense and running game this year, and we still went 9-4 and made progress.

By comparison, USF went 9-4 last year, and it was hailed as a great accomplishment for them and the best season in their (short) history. To do this, they needed an amazing performance out of their QB. Grothe played out of his mind last year to get them that record.

We did that this year, no sweat, while getting dick from our QB (I’ll forgive the o-line today because of the injuries). If we could just find someone halfway decent things could get even better.

Maybe Sunseri is lieing in wait. Also, the two passes Bostick threw today had more zip and accuracy than anything he’s thrown thus far in his college career.

Anyways, you don’t want to read the ESPN and Pantherlair.com comments from other fans right now. Granted, most of these are probably by guys that have nothing to do but post on other team’s message boards (I don’t post here, and only about Pitt), but we’re taking a verbal beatdown haha.

That’s the thing about being in the Big East and being Pitt. LSU has a bad stretch, and it’s ok, they’ll be back. If Pitt (or any other BE team) has a tough game, our program is total garbage and the entire conference sucks because of it. My point is, for teams in our position, there is no margin for error in the court of public opinion. Win several games, and they find a reason why we’re a fluke. Lose one game, and they’re vindicated.

Bill Stull+Cav+Wanny= never winning an important game. End of story. I am on the bandwagon with if Stull starts next year…I am not purchasing season tickets. People wonder why Pitt doesn’t travel….THIS IS WHY! If nothing else, I feel sorry for Connor Lee…such an amazing kick from a phenomenal player…it sucks that was his last memory. it really troubles me that most probbaly for the 3rd year in a row, the 09 Panthers will not reach its potential due to poor QB play. Last year was understandable, this year is much less excusable … especially when there was no back-up plan in the 13th game of the year. Next year will drive me nuts to see what should be a legit BCS capable team being stymied by poor QB play.

If Cav really loved Pitt, he would accept a QB coach in the NFL; if he doesn’t now realize his limitations as an OC, he never will. I will guarantee you that it wasn’t Cross’s fault for not developing, it was Cav’s fault for not having the ability to adjust

Something about DW/Cav and the quarterbacks… Stull was H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E, yet they left him in and they let him throw. When Bostick finally went in, they ran five straight Wildcat plays with Pat as far from the ball as possible, THEN WENT FOR THE 58-YARD FIELD GOAL! It wasn’t until they had 25 seconds to move 60 yards that they finally let Bostick throw. So clearly, the coaches have zero-confidence in his ability to throw the ball. (Shades of last year’s VA game, when Pitt was down by 28 before Bostick was allowed to throw a single pass.) Fine, I can understand that, he’s not good… but neither is Stull. When you get to be as bad as they are, they look to be nearly equally bad to me. But somehow the coaches see this radical difference… Stull=allowed to throw the ball. Bostick=allowed to throw only in the most dire circumstance, and actually not even then. I don’t see what they see. What the hell?

I agree Cav is awful, but that is to be expected. I love when he is introduced as a “Super Bowl winning OC”. Anyone who watched the Ratbirds that year knows that they won the SB DESPITE their offense, certianly not because of it. But remember, it was the ‘Stache who hired him, knowing all these things. I am not saying fire Wanstedt, that is ridiculous, but I think Cavenaugh needs to go NOW. Also, recruit a real qb. I know 4th graders with more pocket presence than Stull and Bostick. As Panther Rants once put it, choosing between Stull, Smith and Bostick is like choosing which gun to shoot yourself with. I think everyone knows how I feel about Stull, but the coaches are not helping by making someone they know has the talent and desire of a grapefruit throw the ball 25+ times a game.

Now that the season is over, I hope Coach W. can come forth with some kind of logical reason why Greg Cross did not get on the field. Please tell me he was injured or they are trying to redshirt him. Something! I try not to criticize the coach too much since I am not at practice every day, but this sequence of events, or lack of, is just mind blowing. To all of Cross’s critics, How “inaccurate” can he be? Worse than what we saw today? Who cares if he even passes? I would take my chances with a snap to Cross and an option of handing it off to Shady over anything I saw today. The fact that he is too stubborn to even try it blows my mind. It should of been a sign to all when Coach W. named Stull the starter before camp even started. There is no way I am going to believe he saw something so definitive in him that he felt compelled to name him the starter without competition. What is going on?

I feel the call to go for it on 4th down is defensible in light of the fact that we were finally stringing together some plays. At the very least, NOT going for it in the same situation was what got the staff skewered after Bowling Green. As for the actual play calling, that is a different story.

Offensively, this game was so BADLY played that I have not seen any highlights on ESPN, because there were NONE!…I have never watched a college football game where nothing EXCITING happened offensively…I think CBS has chose to BURN the tapes of this game and move on…Watching this game was like “GroundHog Day”, the same boring shit kept happening over and over again!!!…I know that CAV and Wanny are best of friends, but it’s time for Wanny to put friendship to the side and FIRE CAV…His play calling is horrendous, he shows no ability to make adjustments during the game, and shows a lack of creativity thats beyond belief!..What happened yesterday was an embarrassment to the University, the city of Pittsburgh, the loyal Fans, and the Alumni.
