2008 Pitt Blather Bracket Challenge

The brackets are set so we might as well fill them ASAP. Like last year, the Pitt Blather bracket group will be on Yahoo. To join:

1) If you don’t already have a Yahoo account, sign up for one (easy and free)

2) Go here: http://tournament.fantasysports.yahoo.com/men/register/joingroup

3) Click join private group

The group ID is 67835 and the password is gopitt

If you somehow manage to crank out a perfect bracket, Yahoo will give you $5 million.

Interesting facts on filling out a perfect bracket:

— Because there are 64 games played in the tourney (including the play-in) and each game has two possible outcomes, there are 264 possible outcomes. That equals 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 (18.4 quintillion!) brackets you’d need to fill out to guarantee you get one perfectly correct.

— If every one of the 6.5 billion people on Earth filled out a bracket, the odds of someone (anyone!) achieving perfection are still slim to none.

Bob Knight picked Pitt to go to the Nat champ game. Ha Ha

RE: Interesting Fact–The odds against picking a perfect bracket, I believe, are actually not as difficult as stated because the hypothesis given is overly simplistic in that it assigns an equal likelihood to each outcome. Assigning a correct probability to each outcome would makes it easier. For example–no #16 has ever beaten a #1 seed–so assign 100% probability to the #1 seeds advancing; then assign say a 85% (or whatever is historically appropriate) for a #2 seed to advance over a #15, and etc., etc. By taking this approach the odds against picking a perfect bracket are reduced significantly.

Forgot to mention–you might need a very capable computer to churn and burn and generate in order of decreasing probability the various outcomes. Then, the likelihood of picking the correct one from the list after eliminating, say, the bottom 25-50% least likely outcomes would still be a huge task.

What site do you go to once you filled out your bracket on the link? If you hit the link to get back with the group, it tells you that you are already registered.

I predict that we will see for the first time a #16 seed beating a #1 seed…..I think UCLA will fall, if not in the first round then in the second round…..they will definitely not reach the Final Four.

I hate that UCLA region. There is no team in there that I have any confidence in.

In any case, I’m goroma.

[…] Just a final reminder about our Bracket Challenge. See if you can beat me (you will). Commenters, what’s the name of your bracket? Just so we all know. […]
