A Solid Beat Down

Sorry to be quiet the last couple of days. Visiting family this weekend. Did manage to make time to listen to the game. Makes me feel foolish (or seem like Lou Holtz) for worrying so much about this game. Pitt took advantage of Toledo mistakes and put this game away early.

As nice as it was to have Dickerson get some action and score on his very first touch, there is a big negative out of this game. Senior Right Guard John Simonitis’ season and career at Pitt is over. He has a broken leg.

Freshman Joe Thomas will start in his place and Jason Pinkston — who played today — will also see a lot of action. The problem is that the depth on the O-line was already shaky. This is a huge loss for Pitt.

45-3…

Yeah, Im ashamed to say I was hoping it was a little more competitive, after the long drive to Pitt, but it was a good win and gave the team some more experience. Toledo was over matched in every part of the game. The goal line stance by Pitt late was, I think the best thing about this game, to be able to not slip-up after the game was well in hand definitely shows improvement. Maybe Rhodes read some of this board after the MSU game.

Very nice win for the Panthers. A game like this shows improvement b/c we did not let an inferior opponent (i.e. Furman, Ohio, etc) hang in the game for the chance to pull the upset.
Any status on Blades?
Tough road game next week at Cuse. They will have confidence going into that game after winning three in a row.

What a game, all pistons were firing. Must hand it to Rhoades, the defense (what I heard on the internet broadcast) did the job. Big loss on the oline ( Simonitis), now others must step up. Makes one wonder why all the serious ankle injuries. Palko, who is now third in all time total Pitt offense, is seriously on top of his game, there is a hint of Hiesman in the air that will grow if we can beat Rutgers and WVU . Now we need to get the fan base mobilized, the product is there.

Syracuse is a game we should win, we have to stay focused.

Something to look at, UVA beat Wyoming by 1 at home earlier this year, Syracuse beat Wyoming by 6 at home yesterday.

I know this is not a good point by comparing UVa, SU and Wyoming, but SU like UVA has problems and this is a road game we can win.

O-Line is thin but Joe Thomas was a nationally ranked player coming out of high school, let’s see what he can do.

4-1 is a nice start, the season has a long way to go, let’s take them one at a time.

I’m convinced we had a speacial guest D-coordinator in for Rhoads. I kept hearing how we would be prepared for Toledo’s spread offense, but I have heard that so so many times. This is the first time it actually came true. Have we turned the corner? Hard to say. If not for the MSU debacle, I would have said yes.

Palko is having the kind of completion percentage that I would expect someone to have playing catch in thier backyard. Unbelievable (in a good way.)

If nothing else, it’s safe to say we are better than last year.

I think it took cuse double overtime to beat wyoming at home. If we play anything like we did this week we should have no problem. I wasnt able to go, How was the attendance at the game?

Comment by Rex 10.01.06 @ 1:25 pm

Attendance was poor, as usual. The offense played really well. We had quite a few long drives and were able to get into the endzone rather than kicking field goals. Speaking of the kicking game, Conor Lee looks really, really, good out there. Excellent for a freshman. Palko looked awesome yesterday and for most of the season. He only made one bad pass against Toledo, the other incompletions were catchable balls. He is spreading the ball around as well. If not for the poor performance versus MSU, then Palko would be garnering Heisman talk. I wouldn’t read too much into the defensive performance, Toledo did not look prepared. However, the goaline stand was impressive.

Comment by Omar 10.01.06 @ 2:42 pm

Heisman will be out of Palko’s reach no matter how well he plays for the sole reason that the contenders are picked by the media over the off season, and rarely does a player come out of nowhere to win. Hope I’m wrong though – he deserves all the accolades he gets this season.

The feeling with this PITT team is that things are coming together and every game has taught them something (even the loss). I think DW is doing very well at putting the right personnel on the field at the right time. I’ll bet Thomas does well, and that Pinkston will do OK with his switch if called on. That’s the essence of teamwork – and we saw an example of that with Dickerson wanting to get on the field even at this late date in the season. To me, that’s an unselfish act when he knew he could sit out and get a full season as a redshirt. I know there’s a lot of discussion about that – but I like the way it was handled.

With regards to attendance, what is Pitt doing to improve the situation??? Attendance is important, it helps motivate the team, is impressive to recruits and most obviously makes it more difficult for our opponents. This year thay have raised ticket prices again. What are they thinking? It seems like they do nothing to actively market this team. Run some fist time season ticket buyer specials, give tickets away to some local non profits or kids organizations, and heck stop raising ticket prices for a year or two. This really frustrates me. Its embarrassing for us to have all those empty seats even to games like Michigan State. The University really needs to look at their marketing effort and start finding ways to fill those seats.

Comment by Rex 10.01.06 @ 5:20 pm

I agree….hell if Pitt has to give the tickets away to groups then so be it……but 25,000 is a joke, bad weather, earler start or not…..and why is every freaking game at noon?

Comment by Marco 10.01.06 @ 5:26 pm

A big problem is people buying tickets and not showing up. The only real way to solve the problem is to win.

Comment by Omar 10.01.06 @ 6:06 pm

We SHOULD beat ‘Cuse but they gave Iowa a decent game so we’re likely not going to put up a Toledo/Citadel type game on them.

Comment by Dennis 10.01.06 @ 6:23 pm

Looks like Tom Duhart re-committed to PITT yesterday – must have been impressed with the big win. Rivals said this…

“Tommie Duhart was a two-star defensive line prospect when he committed to Pitt out of Glades Central High School. Now, Duhart is a four-star junior college defensive line prospect, and over the weekend he committed to Pitt again.”

Maybe coming out of JC he could start right away. These Florida kids love Wanny. Here’s hoping we hear more good news soon on the recruiting front. I’m starting to wish I lived in PGH again so I could actually see the Panthers play, and meet some of you guys at a tailgate. The future really looks bright for this program.

Hank Poteat having a very good game. Interesting blog, “Panthers in the Pros:”

You can’t give tickets away for free. Then the folks who pay for their tickets will get all jacked up and will stop coming to the games. Pitt has always been a tough sell, but winning would certainly be a step in the right direction.

Comment by The Kose 10.01.06 @ 8:05 pm

Ughh, all those stupid cheerleaders annoyed me. How many of them are actually Pitt fans? How many are actually football fans?

Did anyone happen to see the Oderick Turner sign in the upper deck the last two games? I proudly take ful credit for that one. It was great, we took it down to the tunnel right after the game ended and he came over. Hes a nice guy, ended up getting his armbands he wore during the game.

Comment by Dennis 10.01.06 @ 8:59 pm

syracuse only gave iowa a game b/c their starting qb drew tate was hurt. we shouldnt have many problems with them or ucf and their awful pass defense.

Comment by matt 10.01.06 @ 9:16 pm

Kose, Im talking about upper deck tix that would otherwise be empty. And anyone who would get pissed about giving some tickets to non profit orgs or to benefit youth programs is a di@k. And you dont have to publicize it, just do it, nobody has to know about it. The Pirates used to do things like this all the time and it usually worked. They would give tix away or have dollar ticket days for kids under 12. The bottom line is its better than a half empty stadium and maybe you get more young fans involved. I know I am still going to the games regardless of how everyone else got there.

I saw the note on Poteat, did anyone else notice last week that Charles Spencer went down and I think is out for the season. Thats a shame because he was a real solid player for the Texans.

Comment by Rex 10.01.06 @ 9:28 pm

Also to note, Palko is still the #1 passer and Kinder is #6 receiver in the nation.
