Pass (Un)Happy

Filed under: Football — Chas @ 7:40 am

Another game, another loss because secondary was torched.

Tech’s emphasis on testing Pittsburgh with deep passes was a matter of necessity, in Hokies coach Justin Fuente’s opinion.

“They don’t give you a whole lot of choice with the way they play,” Fuente said. “The amount of people in the box, the leverages, how compact they are in there. I thought our guys accepted the challenge. They knew that going in. It certainly wasn’t a surprise.”

And Pitt fans knew it coming into the game. The only question would be how many they would get. Give VT’s QB, Jerod Evans a lot of credit. He didn’t miss too many shots. He put the ball where the receivers at least had a chance.

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi had issues with the officiating all game long, but I really am a bit disappointed in the appearance of sour grapes from him.

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi was frustrated by the loss, and by some calls — or non-calls — from the officials.

“I thought the coverage was real good,” he said. “I thought there were some things that were one-sided that irked me.

“We had guys in position to make plays and we didn’t make them.

“Give the quarterback some credit. He put some balls out there. (Receivers) did a great job of pushing off all night.

“Give them credit for that.”

Was the officiating particularly good or consistent? No. No dispute there.

But there was not one offensive pass interference call all night against either team. In general that has been the way things are these days in football. The receivers are allowed to get away with more pushing and offensive pass interference.

The fact is, Narduzzi and the defensive staff have stubbornly maintained stacking the box to stop the run and try and bring pressure. In the second half, when VT was trotting out a clearly gimpy Evans, Pitt continued to stack as if he was a threat to take off.

I hate repeating this over and over, but…

I understand Narduzzi has a vision for the defense. Not even one I oppose. He is, however, doing a disservice to the team by stubbornly not adjusting to the reality of the players he has and this season. He loses nothing long-term, but making dealing with the present.

Pitt has now lost two cornerbacks to injury. 8 games in, freshman Damar Hamlin makes his debut — and fares about as well as the rest. There is no depth at cornerback. They were clearly getting worn down as the game continued. And they were still getting no help.

The Hokies didn’t just make a play. They made dozens of them, taking full advantage of Pitt’s man-to-man coverage that left its cornerbacks on an island with little to no help from the safeties. By my count, Virginia Tech completed 20 passes of 10 yards or longer, seven of 20-plus yards and four of 30-plus yards.

It wasn’t fair to redshirt sophomore Phillipie Motley, making his second start in place of the injured Avonte Maddox before leaving the game. It wasn’t fair to his replacement, Dane Jackson, a redshirt freshman. And it certainly wasn’t fair to Damar Hamlin, the heralded recruit who burned his redshirt after not playing the first seven games.

“They did have help at times,” Narduzzi said. “You’ve got to stop the run. Virginia Tech is a team that likes to run. There’s not a whole lot you can do, or you’ll get the ball run down your throat.”

VT’s O-line did a good job of protecting Evans, and even used their running backs as blockers as they allowed the receivers to run vertical.

This game was going to be frustrating for whichever team lost. VT would have been bemoaning all the points they left on the board — especially in the first half — with six field goals. Pitt couldn’t do enough on defense.

The offense had some early issues, and had a sputtering in the start of the fourth quarter. Still, they put up 39 points. The offense is not the problem.

It keeps coming back to the secondary for Pitt, and an unwillingness to deal with the problems of right now.

gc/TX – I’m fine with the game frustration. I take issue when it begins to appear like it’s a referendum on the program. It’s building blocks. PN is 10-1 in games he’s favored in. That is progress from our previous few coaches. He has to take the next step eventually but I don’t believe it has to be this year. I think it will happen though. He’s knocking on the door. Miami is winnable and Clemson is not as dominant as anticipated so it may happen this season.

Another dynamic that is happening: Pitt has been successful in selling season ticket packages (mini and full) to individuals who, for whatever reason (PSU, willing donor, etc.), neither plan to nor actually do attend all games. Many of these folks have seats in the lower bowl no doubt. Why not develop a process in which individuals who have less desireable seat locations can “trade in” their seats on game day and fill up the lower bowl. That way they are providing alumni who purchased season tickets to support the program but who are not planning on attending the game a way to help enhance the atmosphere without sacrificing revenue. These type of folks don’t need the money and are not going the Stubhub route but they love and want to help Pitt. How many are we talking? I don’t know. I am just brainstorming; something Barnes may allow but disregards because he always knows best.

TT, he certainly will redeem himself if he wins one of the next two games. He could also lose three of the next four which would make the natives very restless. (and seriously hurt recruiting)

Comment by gc 10.30.16 @ 10:02 am

Wally, I share your opinion and talked about closing the upper end zone last year. Not sure how you do it, but it would be much better to have a packed lower bowl rather than empty seats everywhere. Maybe at half time, invite the upper deck folks to fill in the lower bowl.

In any case some creativity is needed.

Pitt needs to beat Clemson. Screw the ACC’s chances for a BCS. It is Pitt’s championship game. That win will propel Pitt and build momentum for the next few years. It’s a winnable game although Clemson will probably be favored by 17 points.

Comment by TX Panther 10.30.16 @ 10:10 am

gc – I doubt it affects recruiting. Recruiting is about relationships with kids, coaches and parents and the vision for the program. All three groups realize he’s in year two of a rebuild. Some kids like the big lights like Jeter. Pitt will always struggle with those kids and to be honest, Pitt probably isn’t a good fit for them anyways.

Penn State fans bought very few of the season tickets. Next year will have the same rules in place as this year. To be eligible in two years for PSU tickets you’ll have to buy a package for the next year. Is it a gimmick? Sure. Did it work? Yes. Will it work again? Yes. That buys Pitt another two years to get to the vision Narduzzi has and hopefully Pitt will be able to sellout on merit.

if this was year 4 or 5 of Narduzzi, the wins would mean more to recruits as his vision should have started reaping some of the rewards. In year 2 it’s a non-issue. With this season it’s real easy for him to say if we had you back there we would have won the game.

Just let this season play out. The team has been ultra competitive. That’s a great foundation. These kids get punched in the mouth and punch back.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.30.16 @ 10:16 am

TT – I have to talk about how really entertaining our offense is. I watched Ga/Fla last night, and I couldn’t help but see that their offense (our ex-OCJC) is SO unimaginative (to the point of almost boring) we are so fortunate to have Matt Canada here in Chaney’s stead!

I so look forward to watching Pitt to see our offense! I loved that Oh Canada has developed such an effective jet sweep. I’m sure that the steps VT took to stop it are what made the middle so soft, and opened the door forJC to get the yardage he did.
I look forward to similar competitors’ efforts. Canada is amazing!

VT took away the jet sweep, but they were powerless to stop the newly conceived “Turtle Sweep”!! Can’t wait to see what he comes up with for Miami!

I hate that our pass D is so awful, but while I’m waiting for it to improve, I’ll get my entertainment from the O.

I guess in my case, the glass is really only half full!!

Comment by Savannah Panther 10.30.16 @ 10:46 am

TT, recruiting is always better when you are winning. Case in point is Jeter, left ND for Michigan. I remember when we had a nice surge of recruits after the 13-9 game. A Clemson win might be worth 3-4 elite recruits.

For an FYI, the UGa fan base wants ‘the fat man’ fired.

There’s a simple solution to the games where you know there is only going to be 50K or less.

Tarp off the Upper Deck Endzone sections with a Giant Blue Tarp with Yellow Pitt Script.

And then wear the Royal Blue & Yellow Uni’s dummies.

Pitt is beyond dumb. The WNBA figured this out over a decade ago.

Comment by Emel 10.30.16 @ 2:40 pm

Can someone that has the right software, create a pic of what something like that would look like.

Maybe the guy who did the Campus stadium study with the diagrams, etc.

I think it would look pretty cool on TV, if when the TV camera panned, a GIANT Yellow PittScript on a Royal Blue TARP, overlooked the North EndZone from the Upper deck.

Comment by Emel 10.30.16 @ 2:48 pm

You could even include the Giant Panther Head on the Tarp, that use to Overlook Pitt Stadium on the Side of that House, for so long.

Now something like that might actually help Ketchup Bottle Field feel like a real Pitt Venue.

Reality is that Pitt is a semi-private school which competes in a City where pro sports is King and there is competition for the entertainment dollar. And alumni and students dont make sports a priority or identify their self worth and college experience via football Saturdays. With a small and generally apathetic fan base in good times and bad, why play in a stadium that is 70k. The average butts in the seats attendance over the past 10 years has been closer to 40k. Therefore, why not play in a 45k stadium. For the bigger games, Pitt could always play in the new PNC stadium located in Washington County in 15 years.

Comment by TX Panther 10.30.16 @ 3:54 pm

Yea that would be great Tex.

However the muckety mucks aren’t even looking at a feasibility study for an OCS.

Even Temple (which has drawn far more poorly) has done that.

Pitt’s avg attendance is right about the average in D1 football.

“Football Bowl Subdivision attendance for home games averaged 43,288 fans per game, down less than 1 percent from 43,483 in 2014, according to a CBS Sports analysis of NCAA attendance data. Crowds declined by 4 percent in 2014. ”

Emel – love the tarp idea. Would Herman spring $ for it. Cheaper idea. Remember the old card sections at games?

Participating spectators had 2-color cards. We could cover the backs of upper deck seats to spell out a Royal Blue script “Pitt”. The rest of the yellow seats would look like accompanying background! Cheap AND effective.

Jus’ tryin’ to lighten things up!

Comment by Savannah Panther 10.30.16 @ 4:54 pm

If Pitt’s attendance was hurt because a lot of students went to a Bon Jovi concert (free or not), then I no longer consider Pitt to be an institute of higher learning. 😉

As for the Duzz…he was hired based on his enthusiasm for his system. He has to believe in it, right or wrong to be a man of his convictions. Time will tell….but we’re fast running out of time as fans.

What a naked woman will do to make a man quickly forget sports. But not permanently.

If only Pitt athletics was as beautiful. I’m in love with Pitt, but I’ve got a low bar. Not sure if Pitt will ever be cover model material.

Justin – well played

Emel – I can get behind a tarp

Jackagain – exactly

TX – unfortunately Pitt had no quick fixes

Savannah – +1

Gc – Yes, recruiting is better the more you win. Pitt should be able to get better and better classes as the program establishes itself. Some kids will be star struck by the blue chip schools though. it’s not the end of the world. And who knows, maybe he changes his mind again.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.30.16 @ 6:25 pm

lol Savannah

Don’t know if the Card Section thing would work like it does for UCLA or USC home games.

They also did it at the Tenn/VT game at Bristol this year. It look awesome. Of course they had over 100 K

We don’t have enough fans. lol

People give it a rest with all this crap. If coaching is so easy why dont you all do it? All you that are acting like kids didnt think they were going to win any of the 3 games they lost. So guess what, they lost.

The damn coach has had the team in position to win the games. Its funny to read these damn stupid post about playing zone coverages and given help. Did any of you know-it-alls see the results of that in the 2nd half of the OSU game? They then just ran it down Pitts throat and just like last year the defense could not stop that neither.

If Narduzzi and these recruits see and read these post from the same idiots over and over I would not blame him if he did leave and the good recruits dont come here. You all dont deserve shit. And you wonder why coaches dont stay?

You all talk this shit about Narduzzi cant coach and his defense sucks well look what happened to Oaklahoma iast week. They gave up almost 600 passing yards and they have 5 and 4 star studs everywhere.

Shut the hell up and give this man a chance to shape the team up. Its only been 1 and a half years. His team won 8 games last year with still a chance to do it again.

Lead Story… Narduzzi FINED for Bad Mouthing Refs.

Not a way you’d like to start the Week.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.31.16 @ 4:48 am

Seems to be a habit with Narduzzi who ALSO walks the line on Bad Mouthing Players who FAIL to execute his System.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.31.16 @ 4:50 am

What is wrong with being upset with the refs? It was a very poorly officiated game. The refs did not control the game, the VT receivers did. The refs needed to call some offensive pass interference early in the game to stop all the pushing by the VT receivers. And some of you guys think Pitt needs to switch to a zone. FYI – Pitt’s standard defense is a zone – its called Cover 4 and Pitt is in it like 95% of the time.

Comment by rayhpgh 10.31.16 @ 7:23 am

FSU and Fisher got fined 10X what Duzz and Pitt did this week. $50K vs $5K. $5K? ACC felt they had to do something but obviously didn’t care that much. Non-issue.

BTW, Pitt is 125/128 on pass defense (Per Dokish). One of the teams worse is #12 Oklahoma. There is also the fact that Fraud Graham is worst … If the OU stat doesn’t make you feel better, at least we have that.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.31.16 @ 8:27 am

Tossing… the DIFFERENCE with Narduzzi is just how BAD he looked doing it.

He was the stereotype of a PETULANT Child on the Sidelines.

Not a Good Look… especially in the eyes of Recruits or their Parents.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.31.16 @ 9:27 am

pittisit,
You said it all-bravo !

Comment by Spindler's Spirit 10.31.16 @ 9:35 am

Pittsit – spot on…and our 3 losses are to ranked teams and they also wore those blue helmets…

Comment by markp 10.31.16 @ 9:59 am

PoD – I disagree. Everyone knows Narduzzi is this way. It’s part of the reason he was hired. He’s passionate. Everyone gets too worked up about recruiting. Recruiting has been fine and will get better as the program improves. Pittino can still get parents to send their kids to him and he ran a prostitution ring.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.31.16 @ 11:49 am

The problem for Pitt was that the HC did not turn to young corners early in the season. He wanted to play “safe” players (older and experience) over talent. Bottom line. Dane Jackson, Coleman and Hamlin should have been worked in sooner and the coach didn’t do it. If you all think the 3 losses so far were bad (and they absolutely were terrible efforts defensively) just wait– they’re going to go back to Maddox, in fact they are dying to rush him back in. Lewis is terrible and Briggs lined up offsides on the int which was inexcusable and inexplicable.

Comment by Td 10.31.16 @ 12:18 pm

When Narduzzi was still just under consideration for the Pitt job, I posted on Dokish a bit of a warning.

The warning was that Narduzzi had trouble controlling his emotions and might not have the temperament of a Head Coach. And maybe that was one of the things playing into the fact that he was a CAREER Assistant 25 years in the making until finally being offered the job at Pitt.

Dokish strongly disagreed as if there was ABSOLUTELY no basis to the claim.

Well, we’ve learned differently.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.31.16 @ 12:25 pm

But don’t get me wrong.

While I was NOT on board with hiring of Narduzzi when it was done, since then I am ROOTING for him to succeed.

I’ve met him. Talked with him. He’s not a bad Guy… just a little HIGH Strung.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.31.16 @ 12:28 pm

But facts are facts.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.31.16 @ 12:29 pm

@POD, So 20 games with nothing and 1 game like Saturday and you’re comment three years ago is vindicated? To me, the “facts” point to the opposite of Narduzzi being any liability from a temperament standpoint. Are there dozens of situations where he came down from the booth and stormed on to the field at Michigan State that we don’t know about?

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 10.31.16 @ 4:18 pm

I am with the camp that believes Narduzzi is being very rigid in his defensive style. He needs to coach to the personnel we have. Also doesn’t it seem strange that most of our injuries are at the most critical position in his defense. Perhaps too much is expected of these cornerbacks in this defense. In the last couple of years offenses have found a way over this defensive scheme. Common coach, ADAPT!!!

Comment by JohnTheListener 10.31.16 @ 4:46 pm

Teams have pushed off against our corners in the ACC ever since Duke did it and got away with it. Nothing has changed….that’s why Narduzzi is fed up.

Comment by Jackagain 10.31.16 @ 5:22 pm

CNorwood… You might want to check out this morning’s PG and Trib.

Apparently, Narduzzi’s TEMPERAMENT is a bit of an issue.
