Open Thread: Samford-Pitt

I was starting to work on a recap rant diatribe review of the football game yesterday, but decided I didn’t want to start drinking that early on a Sunday morning when it doesn’t involve a tailgate.

So, instead, let’s get ready for Samford.

The game is at 1pm and is part of the Maui Invitational package. No, really. The game was set up for Pitt by the Maui organizers.

In the Pittsburgh area, it is on ROOT, but since it is a syndicated ACC Network/ESPN game you can watch it on line at ESPN3 and plenty of other outlets including the ESPN FullCourt package, FoxSports West, FoxSports South, Sun Sports and Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic.

Is Samford going to be a real challenge for Pitt? Probably not.

The Panthers second opponent, Samford, doesn’t figure to provide much more of a test because the Bulldogs, much like the Purple Eagles, feature eight first-year players and have only two players in the program with more than one year of experience.

The Bulldogs opened their season Friday at Purdue and got throttled, 80-40. Samford shot just 28 percent from the field and scored only 16 points in the first half.

The most interesting feature of the Samford team expected to finish near or at the bottom of the SoCon is the fact that their new head coach is Scott Padgett. A former Kentucky player from Rick Pitino’s 1998 championship team.

Cameron Johnson should continue to see action, and Coach Jamie Dixon acknowledged after the Niagara game that he stands to benefit in terms of playing time from Durand Johnson’s suspension.

Muschamp out and Marshall Coach in is my guess.

Thanks Chas. Forgot there was a game. Just got off the Smizik blog, had to defend the Panthers vs the doubters.

I’ve shut down the football part of my brain. Full tilt to March now. Hail to Pitt! In Jamie We Trust.

Announcer Dan Bonner was a former star at Avonworth. We should get a fair shake from him.

Stamford looks pretty good.

Lots of pt for Cam Johnson.

Block by Johnson, air ball by Johnson. Stamford up 15=13

Comment by alcofan 11.16.14 @ 1:36 pm

I remember someone predicting that Artis would be odd man out and would transfer. Funny, he looks like a whole new player. They all look slimmer and faster. Next year should be their year but this year will also be fun.

Cheick Diallo at the game with ’15 commit Damon Wilson.

Comment by Mailman 11.16.14 @ 1:56 pm

It’s a good thing Samford is 1-10 on their 3’s….just 4-10 and Pitt is behind at the half.

Comment by Jackagain 11.16.14 @ 2:07 pm

Pitt was up by 8 at the half. ?? Still up 8 at the 15 minute mark in the second half.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 11.16.14 @ 2:16 pm

The hell with the downtown skyline, show the Cathedral

Comment by alcofan 11.16.14 @ 2:19 pm

Pitt’s getting out rebounded 27-24. Dixon ain’t gonna like that….

Comment by Jackagain 11.16.14 @ 2:30 pm

Micheal Young looks like a whole new guy, didn’t see those moves around the hoop last year.

Comment by gc 11.16.14 @ 2:36 pm

Not very impressive, against a super lightweight rent-a-win.

Considering Purdue beat Samford & Son by 40 points.

Pitt not creating enough turnovers. Against a scrub team like Samford & Son, they only had 7 turnovers.

Pitt should be using these rent-a-win games to perfect a halfcourt trap defense. Then these games would have some value to them.

Comment by Emel 11.16.14 @ 3:23 pm

4 points and 3 rebounds TOTAL for Randall & Uchebo does not bode well either.

Just a pathetic effort all around.

Comment by Emel 11.16.14 @ 3:25 pm

Competitive game shows our weaknesses, rebounding, pressure on the ball.

Comment by alcofan 11.16.14 @ 3:37 pm

The Tryone Haughton kid isn’t even seeing the floor.

How doesn’t he see the floor against Niagara.

Is he that bad ?

If so why was he even signed ?

Comment by Emel 11.16.14 @ 3:41 pm

Just listened too Michael Young being interviewed after the game. Wow! He grew an inch and a half over the summer. He worked out four times a day. Really sounds like a super smart motivated kid.

Not to worry Emel, I think we are going to be pretty good if Wright is OK when he comes back.

Best five will be Young, Artis, Jeter, Wright, and Robinson, with Newkirk coming off the bench. Plenty of depth everywhere. Uchebo looks like a new man and is moving pretty well. But Young, Artis and Robinson have all slimmed down and can really move.

Haughton was insurance if Uchebo was hurt. He got here really late so I am sure he is totally lost. Young said Jeter is just starting to figure things out and he was here all summer.

Cameron Johnson is the lucky guy who benefits from DJ’s absence. Well along with Artis who will get most of the minutes.

Comment by gc 11.16.14 @ 4:02 pm

The football season ended yesterday, for even the most optimistic of Pitt fans, so on to basketball. Losing Durand Johnson is a bummer, but we’ll have to wait and see how this team develops over the next few weeks. They surprised the heck out of me last season.

Comment by Justinian 11.16.14 @ 4:21 pm

Kind of a stange game. Pitt played ok but it was way too close. Then again, foul shots seemed to keep samford in it in the first half. Defense looks average at best. Nice running game! But really below average halfcort game, even for pitt.

Comment by DD 11.16.14 @ 4:25 pm

I have said it a few times now but already its being proven true…this will be dixon’s worst rebounding team ever.

Comment by DD 11.16.14 @ 4:30 pm

Tis from the PG about Samford:

“The Panthers second opponent, Samford, doesn’t figure to provide much more of a test because the Bulldogs, much like the Purple Eagles, feature eight first-year players and have only two players in the program with more than one year of experience.”

And they hung with us at home? Could be a long season…what a bad year to be in the Maui Classic.

Comment by Jackagain 11.16.14 @ 4:48 pm

The first thing I always check in the box score is rebounds. With Dixon’s teams, that seems to be the best marker of their play. Out rebounded today by Samford. Hmmm…

Comment by Iron Duke 11.16.14 @ 5:24 pm

Too soon to be worried?

1. Two games of four so far were close the whole way thru, to two teams that should be far, far inforior
2. With the bahamas trip and such, shouldnt this team be further along?

I believe its going to take time for Pitt to figure itself out. We will have losses in the non con. But i am optimistic it will pay off for the acc schedule.

Comment by DD 11.16.14 @ 6:11 pm

PItt didn’t play well today — no denying that. I’m also a bit worried about who’s going to clean the glass against better competition.

But…

Michael Young has the physical tools to be the best post player in the Howland/Dixon era. I know Dejaun Blair was a monster on the boards, but Young has a game that translates much better to the pros. We’re going to see him play a lot at the five and he will be a matchup nightmare for any team that employs a slow footed center.

When this team figures out the proper rotation and the kids get used to playing with each other (let’s not forget they’re mostly sophomores), they’re going to be extremely difficult to defend. This is definitely a team that will improve drastically as the year goes on.

Fear not Pitt fans, Jamie has a good group of players in the program.

Comment by Denny 11.16.14 @ 6:45 pm

Difference in coaching style between Dixon and Chryst. Samford will win more than they lose. Got to stay with the three shooter all the time.

Comment by Frank MD 11.16.14 @ 7:00 pm

On the upside Pitt handled Samford’s press well nearly the entire game. Lots of breaks and strong finishes.

Pitt did not do a good job of cleaning the defensive glass in the first half and it allowed Samford to jump out front and then remain in striking distance at half.

Pitt did a poor job of defending the three point line in the second half.

Young shows a lot of promise scoring around the rim. He plays a little like a much more mobile Blair who can finish above the rim.

Artis has some LP game in him. He has looked like their most consistent player thru two games.

Sheldon Jeter has some length to him that makes him an interesting weak side shotblocker.

Pitt seemed to fritter away a number of opportunities to open up double digit leads. Missed open shots, turnovers, missed free throws.

It struck me that Pitt was playing quite a few sophs for major minutes today. Young, Artis, Newkirk, Jones, and Jeter. Bound to have a few issues. It will be frustrating at times but it’s fun to watch their games grow.

Comment by barvo 11.16.14 @ 7:30 pm

Uchebo played ten, randall 4. 14 minites from our traditional centers. Is dixon saving uchebo for a long season? He played an ok game for the few minutes he was shuttled in and out. Not great but held his own. Dont even remember if he played in the second half.

Comment by DD 11.16.14 @ 7:42 pm

TEN PLUS YEARS… and we’re still celebrating MEDIOCRITY with Pitt Basketball.

Yet, everyone expects Pitt Football to become a WORLD BEATER OVERNIGHT!

Comment by PittofDreams 11.16.14 @ 8:28 pm

Pitt of Dreams, No Pitt Basketball is not mediocre. They have been consistently good with a regularity that’s pretty remarkable. To any critics who say they under-achieved, the opposite is true. They have exceeded to the point that people expected more than the talent they had, could realistically achieve. In all the years the Panthers made it into the NCAA Tourny, we only had two teams with the capabilities to do well.

Comment by Justinian 11.16.14 @ 8:59 pm

“In all the years the Panthers made it into the NCAA Tourny, we only had two teams with the capabilities to do well.”

The ABSOLUTE definition of MEDIOCRITY.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.16.14 @ 9:12 pm

I am no expert on Pitt Basketball even though I have charted their motion offense, inbounds plays and 2/3 zone. It is way too early to judge much with this team. With Dixon’s teams, rebounding and perimeter defense are always a problem, especially early.

I would say we will know for sure after 8-11 games.

We’re 2-0 ..what could be wrong with that! Oh wait..football.

Comment by Dan 72 11.16.14 @ 10:09 pm

We most of us figured scoring would be a problem with this group. How do we replace the scoring of Lamar & Zanna ?

63 points against a scrub team like Samford & Son is not good.

Middling Purdue scored 80 and won by 40.

Comment by Emel 11.16.14 @ 10:14 pm

^Well^

Comment by Emel 11.16.14 @ 10:14 pm

Dan, yes we’ll have to see how they develop. And hopefully I will be busy during the next two football games.

Comment by Justinian 11.16.14 @ 10:16 pm

ESPN …never one to miss an opportunity to highlite anything Pitt…when it is negative.

Doesn’t let us down.

hmmmm…we ‘Banned’ him.

Comment by Emel 11.16.14 @ 10:17 pm

Does he also get a Scarlet Letter.

Comment by Emel 11.16.14 @ 10:17 pm

They didn’t look great today but still got the win. Pitt teams struggle against teams that eat up the clock on offense and it seemed like Samford was consistently shooting with a couple seconds left in shot clock.

Team is missing a starter in Cam and needs to adjust to life without DJ. They will be fine. They always are.

PittofDreams get serious with yourself. Do you know what a 4-8 or 5-7 record would equal in terms of Pitt basketball? It would be like a 10-20 record. But hey being bad in a mediocre football conference is the same as routinely finishing at the top of a top basketball conference.

Comment by Wardapalooza 11.16.14 @ 11:35 pm

DD pointed out that Uchebo just played 10 minutes and Randall 4. The fall off in rebounding was due to the team playing small.

I’m hoping that DD’s guess is right and that Dixon was saving Uchebo’s legs for the upcoming games. Another explanation could be that Dixon wanted to use this game to teach the team how to rebound when playing small.

I’m hopeful that Luther could eventually be the solution for rebounding when Pitt plays small. Last game he played, he had 5 rebounds in 10 minutes – the same 20 rebounds per game rate as Uchebo.

Comment by Howard 11.16.14 @ 11:58 pm

On second thought, I think Dixon played small because Young is the best center against the full court press. We did do a good job with the press — 20 assists and just 11 turnovers.

Comment by Howard 11.17.14 @ 12:14 am

I’m no basketball expert by any means but I believe Samford missed 14 3point shots which usually translates into a lot of long rebounds normally of the offensive kind.

Comment by classof69 11.17.14 @ 7:13 am

This is a young team so it’s expected they’re will be times they struggle in games like these.(at one point 5 sophomores were playing ..I expect a lot of ups and downs this season.
But can’t argue that this team (and next few years) has potential to be best offensive team Dixon ever had. If these kids start to pick up Dixon’s defensive mind set they’ll do very very well.

Comment by milobloom 11.17.14 @ 8:28 am

classof69,

Yes. You are correct. The rebounds they were not getting were the long rebounds. In his post-game remarks Dixon blamed the guards for not getting them.

Comment by Howard 11.17.14 @ 8:49 am

You can see the talent when you watch this team. Very young, so there will be growing pains, but super high ceilings for a number of these guys.

To me Young looks like the most talented guy we have had since Charles Smith. Newkirk is the most athletically gifted guard we have ever had. Robinson is the best ball control guy since the guy on the bench. Artis looks like a new man. Jeter is big and athletic. Johnson is very skilled and poised for a freshman.

Uchebo and Randall will give needed minutes. Uchebo may surprise, different looking guy from last year.

Cam Wright should be the glue guy and best defender, if he is healthy.

This should be another fun season at the Pete.

Comment by gc 11.17.14 @ 9:49 am

gc, I’m with you about Young. He looks like a completely different player this year. He’s aggressive around the basket and doesn’t get pushed around. I think some national basketball writer said that Mike Young has the potential to be Dixon’s best player ever.

I think Jeter is going to be pretty good by March. Have to remember he only started practicing with team in the fall. He’d be starting right now if his Vandy coach hadn’t blocked the direct transfer.

Comment by Wardapalooza 11.17.14 @ 10:36 am

It is great to look at Artis, Young and Robinson and realize that last year they were….(wait for it)…FAT!

They are looking so much more cut, trim, quicker and aggresive (at least on offense).

Comment by DD 11.17.14 @ 11:44 am

Ward… here you go again.

It’s apples and oranges.

But if you were to compare Pitt Football this year to Basketball, Jamie Dixon’s “Lost Year” a couple or three years ago would seem to match up pretty well.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.17.14 @ 3:01 pm

this is not a “young” team in terms of BBall.
JROB 3rd year Artis & Young 2nd year, Randall who knows how many. Jones has been around for 3 years. In todays BBall world that is about as veteran team as you get.
disappointing vs Samford, was there & seemed coaching adjustments were slow to happen, and lack of outside threat will seal this teams doom.

Comment by punxypanther 11.17.14 @ 3:52 pm

PittofDreams, you are the one who has to consistently say negative things about the Pitt basektball program. You don’t live in reality. Not one person who covers college basketball for a living would consider Pitt basketball under Jamie Dixon to be mediocre.

You also somehow think a football team that is going to end up 4-8 or 5-7 made major strides this year. Such a joke.

Comment by Wardapalooza 11.17.14 @ 3:53 pm

Don’t think this team is overly young.

Not in the context of the better programs who routinely play multiple freshmen.

When CW comes back we’ll have a senior and a junior in the backcourt, which is where it helps to have experienced players.

Artis, Young, Newkirk and Jeter all got lots of minutes in their freshmen year.

Jones is in year 3 of the system. Randall year 2.
Uchebo year 2.

We will ONLY have 1 freshmen getting minutes, CJ.

So let’s not use the excuse we’re young, cause the better programs don’t have 4rth & 5th year seniors.

If they’re any good, they’re gone to the NBA long before that.

Comment by Emel 11.17.14 @ 5:11 pm

Did anyone happen to see Duke v MSU last night? Wow. Looks like the rest of the ACC is playing for 2nd. Okafor, Winslow and Young are freshmen who play like seniors. They are deep at every position and obviously well coached.
