PITT – Duke Predictions

As bad as last week was I still don’t think it was an accurate reflection of the talent this Panther team has or its ability to play well and win games. With that I’m expecting a much better showing by PITT this week with a return to a strong running game and the staff getting the other RBs and different WRs the ball more often then in the past.

Conner gets 100+ yards and two TDs, Voytik throws for one and we score another by some other player.  Trey Anderson might be that other guy.

PITT – 31 Duke – 27

What do you think?

Short of a serious felony, Florida State will not penalize any of their key player’s, the ACC will not allow it. Just look at how they took a blind eye to North Carolina’s magical grading system.

Comment by MariettaMike 11.02.14 @ 10:04 am

Anybody know where Duke’s recruiting classes ranked the last…. say 4 years ?

Got to be in the bottom half of FBS.

Comment by Emel 11.02.14 @ 10:08 am

How could Pitt be ranked as the forty-second best college/university in the world when Its football coach speaks in phrases that don’t make logical sense? And he is second highest paid person on Pitt’s payroll.

Do I sound cynical, you bet. And I delayed going into Bobby Dodd yesterday to watch Pitt beat Duke. I won’t make that mistake again.

Comment by MariettaMike 11.02.14 @ 10:09 am

Maybe Riverboat Paulie, after he get’s non-tendered by Pitt….can work for the CDC. 🙂

Comment by Emel 11.02.14 @ 10:13 am

I have friends that attended Duke and the football player’s accepted scholarships for the free (otherwise 40K) tuition and housing. They want a degree from Duke and could care less how they performed on the grid iron. Duke’s basketball out drew its football team up until last year.

I don’t see Pitt in Duke’s academic class. Pitt should not lose to Duke but…

Comment by MariettaMike 11.02.14 @ 10:15 am

MariettaMike, That’s an under statement about Florida State, I believe a rape charge is pretty serious. About North Carolina’s academic scandal, if were anyone else in the ACC, they would have been clobbered. We should start talking about basketball, because the football season is in all reality,is over. Way TOO many self inflicted wounds. I feel sorry for James Conner, he’s having one of the best seasons ever, by a Pitt running back and the team is going nowhere.

Comment by Justinian 11.02.14 @ 10:16 am

Weinnstat(?) is an analyst for college games. His major in post game analysis and I agree “you win championships with defense.”
A D1 QB would help. If you watch the post game reviews almost all if not all the teams have a QB with a stronger and more accurate arm than Voyltik (?)even if they are as small as he is.
His long pass in the second half from the pocket to Jennings were he put everything into it and Jennings was interfered with but the referee could not call it because the ball landed 15 yards short.
Actually Tino had a stronger arm.
I doubt if Berwick, not a highly sought after QB is the answer so unless Chyrst waks up and finds a transfer (like WVU) 6 win’s next year is the best to expect with this coaching staff.
With the present squad cleaning house of the coaching staff, and AD could bring 2 more wins.

So the chancellor dotted the “I” on a Pitt script formation during the band’s performance.

Is this big freakin’ news, a glimpse of what’s the come, or just a cruel tease?????

Comment by TonyinHouston 11.02.14 @ 10:40 am

The logic of moving Connors to the defensive side is he has the temperament of a defensive player. Never give up make the runner and QB remember the hits they took. You put on the hit not wait for them to come to you grab and hold on hit at the waist moving forward. Be a beast.
With Donald gone their is no one on D that plays with a defensive temperament.
Boyd is feed up with Volytik and Connors is feed up a defense that cannot maintain any lead he gives them by sacrifices his body and imposing his will.
Hopefully these two will are such competitors that they know that if they have to play for themselves because for each Sunday is waiting.

James Conner leads the FBS Div. 1A NCAA in rushing yards. Congratulations to him on a wonderful game.

What have we Pitt alumni done to deserve this abuse. It’s bad enough that Penn State and West Virginia cronies spew their vile at us. Why do the wounds have to be self-inflected? And we donate our hard earned money every year to our alma mater only to live with these nightmares.

What have we alumni done to P#ss off the gods?

Comment by MariettaMike 11.02.14 @ 11:09 am

In the long run probably a good thing that Chryst does not know what even the casual fan knows just from watching games. You always move the ball to the middle to get the easier kick.

Why is it better, because if we win, it takes the pressure off a defense that in two consecutive games has had no answer, has given up 612 yds, 56 points and 438 yds and 51 points, can’t control the line of scrimmage, create a turnover, make a sack, or a needed tackle.

Does anyone expect this defense to be better next year? Do any of the underclassmen make you say “They are going to tear it up and go Pro after Junior year”

Let’s hope Gallagher is a leader and a man of action. Pedersen’s new contract was pure and simple a payoff for a buddy, give him the money and send him packing. Bring in a guy that can fix it. Either give Chryst one more chance with a new defensive coordinator, or send him packing as well. But do something.

Football is making our University a laughingstock. It may be funny when Lucy pulls the ball away from Charley Brown, inevitable.

That is what Pitt Football has become, a very sad laughingstock.

Please Gallagher, prove that you don’t think it is funny.

Marietta, PSU and WVU aren’t spewing anything at us this weekend. Their spewing at their coaches.

I think it comes down to simple math.

Three games to go

If Pitt goes 3-0 Chryst, House, and Steve all keep their jobs

If Pitt goes 2-1 Chryst and Steve keep their jobs…House is a maybe at best, most likely gone.

If Pitt goes 1-2 Chryst and Steve keep their jobs and House is fired

If Pitt goes 0-3 that could be just an all out firing of everyone.

Mark Nordenberg served as the seventeenth Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh from 1996 to 2014.

From 1996 to 2014 Pitt football has had no less than 5 losses an each season, in 15 of those years.

Of the 4 seasons, that didn’t have at LEAST 5 losses, three of those seasons had 4 losses and ONLY one (2009) had 3 losses. Both coaches who were responsible for those only 4 seasons were asked to leave.

So fast recap, of the 19 seasons (counting 2014) since Gallagher hasn’t been around long enough to initiate any changes other than Pitt script, ‘on helmets only’), of those 19 seasons Nordy was the man at the top, 15 of those the football program lost at least 5 games (or about 80% of the seasons).

Luckily he retired, as obviously he was quite ok with how things were going and even praised Cornhole with false claims.

Nordy was not a Pitt man, having received his degree’s from Thiel College and then his law degree from…WISCONSIN ! lol

The new Chancellor, Patrick Gallagher is a Pitt man. Having earned his Physics degree and PH.D. at Pitt in 1991.

We an only hope the new Chancellor will rescue us from Pitt Purgatory.

And I do like immensely Chancellor Gallagher’s connections.

Gallagher was formerly the 14th director of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and had served as the Acting United States Deputy Secretary of Commerce.

Yesterday needs to be the end of House. Chryst is on the verge of losing this team and needs to show his players that he is committed to them by removing the worst d coordinator in the nation. We have a bye week-do it now.

Comment by John 11.02.14 @ 11:57 am

Cutting and pasting did not work that well. Anyway season long, losing in almost every defensive category.

Comment by gc 11.02.14 @ 12:00 pm

haha gc

I believe you, regardless of the copy & paste.

The defense has sucked since the 2nd half of the Iowa game.

You can discount the VA Tech game since that QB was horrendous for 3 quarters and Va tech is not very good at all. Last place says it all.

I would take Tressel.
I would take Bradley.
I would take Freidens.
I would take Neuheisel.
I would take just about anyone who has been able to win.
We’re talking football, not the Vatican.

Comment by gasman 11.02.14 @ 12:10 pm

So yea the D was real good against overmatched D2 Delaware, not as good against bad (3-6) FIU.

Btw FIU has scored the most points of their season against, other than doormat teams against who ?

If you said Pitt, you would be correct.

We can officially put to rest, that there has been any improvement in the defense from last year to this.

I think even Reed will acknowledge that now.

Comment by Emel 11.02.14 @ 12:14 pm

I think the time has come for Pitt to make a decision. PSU is done suffering from Sandusky, nobody cares how stupid Holgy looks. Both those schools are all in. There’s a lot of money on the table and they’re going for it. Pitt is going to sit back and play the “we’re better than that card” and will be a joke. Time to step up or time to drop down with Duquesne. Reed mentioned this a couple days ago, maybe that would be better. We can’t beat Duke, Akron Navy UConn etc. What’s the sense, administration doesn’t care it just us fools.

Comment by andrew92 11.02.14 @ 12:29 pm

Call up Jim Tressel now as AD! He would be a great leader for the program and would hire the right people. We need to hit this thing with a big grass roots effort. Like many of you I am absolutely frustrated with the leadership of this program. Send EJ Borghetti an email or someone an email! I did! I think we should start with a firing of the defensive coordinator and hire Tom Bradley! Everyone laughed when many of us stated his name earlier. Well not so funny anymore. He is at our rival school and their defense and recruiting has improved dramatically. Hire him as the D coord. and then give Chryst this next year to play for his contract. 6 wins or lower he gets the boot. And then you already have Bradley there to step in as the interim coach. You interview some good quality coaches and go from there. If no one jumps out at you, you already have Bradley who probably should’ve got the job the last time.

Smiley has to go!!!!! Enough is enough!!! There is a great quote from a former Nebraska player after Pederson was fired out there. He said that the firing of SP was the best thing that happened to Nebraska football in 10 years! Now that’s saying something! They knew how to get him out, why don’t we? It will come down to the alums and the people who donate the big bucks!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 11.02.14 @ 12:40 pm

If we don’t do anything we are going to turn into Wake Forest! No offense to them academic wise but they are not too good at football but was a good hoops program not that long ago! Start sending those emails! We must unite! Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 11.02.14 @ 1:21 pm

The very fact that Chryst is heading in the direction of the “hot seat” should lead to the dismissal of Mr Pederson at seasons end. If Chryst can turn it around next season, great for him, us, and the new AD. If not, the new AD is in place to make the hire. If Peterson is allowed to hire another coach, that will be our sign that Mr. Gallagher couldn’t care less about Pitt football

Comment by HbgFrank 11.02.14 @ 1:43 pm

Tressel is now president of YSU. Should he accept a position of AD of a team that his current school team beat a couple of years ago? I don’t think so

Comment by wbb 11.02.14 @ 1:46 pm

Teryl Austin as HC (somewhat of a reach since he has no HC experience)
Tom Bradley as DC (note that Austin interned under Bradley in early 90s)

but I believe this program needs a dramatic change

Comment by wbb 11.02.14 @ 1:59 pm

THE PROGRAM ITSELF IS THE PROBLEM!!

Comment by Keith 11.02.14 @ 2:54 pm

I know that I don’t know anything about football guys and thanks for reminding me. My Div.1 scholarship was not in football, but I am sure you had a career ending injury right before the scholarship offers came in. I wasn’t saying that it was acceptable to kick from the hash mark. What I was saying, and if you look at the game on replay, the field goal issues started with the first extra point of the game. It was straight on and he almost pushed it right, barely making the kick. The snaps and holds were bad all day. The last one was a miss. Rugby players kick at some really harsh angles. These guys practice for hours and hours and hours. This was not the first time he kicked from a different angle. In practice from that same spot, had he ever missed? I would think Pitt knows where he kicks best from. Had he kicked from the middle and missed would it have been Chryst’s fault? The kid missed,So what? Should the players, and I say PLAYERS know to keep the ball in the middle of the field too? Seriously, a bunch of finger pointers. If Blewitt puts it through the middle, it’s cricket city. I am sure Chryst has seen the kid kick em through from all angles, one hand tied behind his back and blindfolded in practice and games and felt comfortable at any angle. Would it surprise anyone if Blewitt was 146-150 from the right hash and 141-150 from the middle of the field in practice from about the same spot? Chryst will take the blame because he has to and the numbers above were made up, but illustrative. We don’t know what goes on. It was a miss. That is NOT why the team lost. Special Teams gave up a TD return too, but no mention of that. It looked like Wanny coaching them again. Luckily, we don’t have to play NC any time soon…oooops, that kid is salivating I am sure. Definitely not in study hall, but salivating.

As previously mentioned pre-game, I said that House needed to double crowder and put Pitts on their second best receiver. That is how you eliminate what they do best. We didn’t do that.

Second, Chris James is going to be a nice player for Pitt, but right now, he lacks running patience. Again, I know nothing about football, but to me he seemed to run ahead of his blockers the last couple of weeks instead of waiting for them to block and then accelerate through the hole.

Overall, we don’t have the players. Our defense does not play down hill. Most all successful (top20) programs play a defense with at least 7 coming forward at each snap, not laterally. Penetration is defensively vital in football, so I am told by a kindergarten phenom. I might be wrong in typing that as I am so new to the game apparently. Whitehead needs to enroll tomorrow!

Programmatically, the AD goes first and the new AD gets to review the current coach and either keep him or send him away. See Michigan.

I find it amusing that someone thinks Cutliffe was brilliant for using 2 of the 3 timeouts to freeze the kicker. Really? What do you want him to do with the timeouts, keep em? Coaches have been doing that for years and it is not coaching wizardry. I do blame Pitt for this a little bit. I would have removed the kicking team from the field during the entire time out and then put them on the field when it was time to kick. At the next time out, I bring them off again, let the kicker go through his pre-insertion routine and do it again.

Dhuff, I disagree. I like Coach Chryst and want to see him succeed, but not centering that kick was just a brain fart move. It is simply a matter of choosing the highest percentage option. The data in the link above proves the point.

Comment by HbgFrank 11.02.14 @ 4:21 pm

Agree with you gc. Well put.

Comment by TonyinHouston 11.02.14 @ 5:24 pm

If you actually read the study, it makes my point. I think you were focused on the 10 yard field goal or 50 yarder. I used the 30 yard field goal and quote below.

“At 30 yards centered we have an angle of 5.4 degrees vs 5.2 degrees at the hashmark, which is only a 3% improvement. Significantly less then we saw above!” He missed it by 30 yards people!!The snaps were bad all day and he lost confidence, period. Quit blaming him and the coach. Pitt lost the game because we were stupid on defense and didn’t play on special teams that well, giving up a td on a return, getting our holder sacked on a muffed field goal and missing poorly on the last attempt.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 11.02.14 @ 6:13 pm

Dhuffdaddy, Good points. I am just so disappointed in the ways the Panthers are finding to lose games. Particularly when you consider how well they are running the ball.
