Future Tournaments Look Good

I’m not going to spend much time banging on how bad the non-con is this year. I think everyone already knows it. Some of it was out of Pitt’s hands with the non-con tournament squeeze, deal falling through at MSG, and a team dropping out of the Philly Classic. Still the next 3 years of tournaments are already set.

Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said today Pitt will play in the 2014 Maui Invitational. It’s Pitt’s first trip to Maui since Dixon became head coach.

Pitt will play in the Philly Classic in November. In 2012, the Panthers will play in the preseason NIT in New York. In 2013, they will play in the Legends Classic In Brooklyn.

The preseason NIT is always a big deal, and the Maui Invitational is fantastic because of the ESPN backing and promotion. The Brooklyn game is obviously a new one, but considering that will be in the new NBA arena there, so I expect the promoters to get some really good teams to try and get some attention from MSG.

Add in the fact that Dixon and his wife have a history with Hawaii — where they met and Dixon was an assistant. Not that I think Dixon is going anywhere, but getting to coach his team in Hawaii in a few years has to be another enticing carrot.

Brooklyn! Yeah boy. Plenty of enticing carrots there as well.

Brooklyn is where the new Nets Arena will be and where the revised BE BB Catholic conference will be playing their conference tourney … at the same time the ACC will be playing theirs at MSG (every other year alternating with the Capital Center – or whatever the arena is called in DC)

Got to make my plans for Maui then Chas.

I can’t remember us being in Hawaii since we played in the Rainbow Tournament in Honolulu back in 1988 I believe and won it. We beat Danny Manning and Kansas, who went on to win the National Championship that year.

Still believe to this day had we gotten past Vanderbilt and played Kansas, we would have beat them again.

Atlantic 10 will be playing their conf. tourney at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn from ’13.

well, looks like BE BB Catholic will be going to the Spectrum

Emel, believe you’re right .. and I think the game came on something like 3:00 am Eastern

The Spectrum would represent perfect planning by the Big East…it was torn down earlier this year! Just imagine Marinatto saying, “I swear there was a building here last time I looked.”

Let’s see…in 2014 my daughter will be 4 years old. I think that is just about the right age for her first visit to Hawaii.

OK, the Wachovia Center — I stand corrected

Capital Center, in Maryland, was imploded 10 years ago. Verizon Center is venue now in downtown DC.

Just went to Maui for my honeymoon in 2010. Maybe I can convince my wife that a return trip is in order…

You had to bring up that Vandy game, EMel. Barry Frickin’ Goheen. It’s always one guy who plays out of his mind. We’d have 3 or 4 NCAA Final Fours if it wasn’t always for “that one guy”.

Getting back to our discussions about which position Khem Birch will play, Bryan over at PittScript has posted some Media Day videos from Panther Sports Network. In the interview with Birch, he acknowledges that he is slated to play the 5.

Here is the video posted by PSN on YT:

Talking about Pitt Basketball, I feel better already!

We played Texas Tech and Wash. State in the Legends Classic in Newark a few years ago…..the other team was Mississippi State(I remember cause I was there). It’s not a new tournament, they just move it every year and this year’s field was shitty.

Maui…nice!

Legends Classic this year is in the Meadowlands and will be Vanderbilt vs NC State and then Texas vs Oregon State..decent teams but nothing like NIT or Maui
