Adams Will Not Go To China

And it is time for a Steven Adams update.

The best team in New Zealand national team — Tall Blacks — wanted him for their trip to China and Europe. They had him for tryouts. Even though, they knew it was doubtful that he would be permitted to take the trip.

Adams, brother of Olympic shot put champion Valerie, would be nigh on an automatic pick because he’s the only genuine piece of tall timber in contention along with Breakers and Waikato Pistons standout Alex Pledger. After Adams had a promising debut NBL season with the Saints, the national coaches were keen to begin his introduction to the international game.

US scouts have predicted a potential NBA future for him and he was snapped up by highly credentialed Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon last year.

But Vucinic confirmed there were doubts around the Scots College youngster who is being groomed for the 2012 entry class for the University of Pittsburgh.

“There are some issues with him around his availability for the programme, with school and other things,” Vucinic said yesterday. “We’re trying to work through that, but for whatever reasons, if he’s not available he still becomes a big part of our plans for the future.”

It’s understood that Adams’ minders, including Saints assistant coach Kenny McFadden, have told the Tall Blacks coaching staff his schoolwork must come first as he seeks to fulfil eligibility criteria ahead of his American college entry.

And sure enough he was left off the final roster.

There is some grumbling and grousing behind the scenes, though, that the real reason Adams was kept off the squad by his “minders” is that they have him slated to head to the US for a top basketball camp/tournament while the Tall Blacks are touring.

The Tall Blacks travels to China and Europe start next week and takes up most of August. So, it may be possible. But August is not an evaluation period, so any tournament would be purely for the competition. Making it at least more likely that this is just  complaints from the Tall Blacks camp about not having Adams on the roster.

At least I hope so. Since our own selfish interests are to make sure Adams has his academic eligibility firmly established with the NCAA.

The Tall Blacks are not professional, they are the national team of New Zealand.

Their FIBA Oceania qualifying tournament for the 2012 Olympics is in September, I wonder if Adams will be included in that… sounds unlikely.

His arrival at Pitt would be next summer unless NZ makes the Olympics and he chooses to play. Still alot up in the air..

Great info, Chas. Thanks.

I have a general question on the topic of height measurement. One sees a range of heights bandied about for any given athlete. Are the variances accounted for by sloppily constructed measurement devices? Aren’t there new-fangled electronic devices that do a fine job?

I’m being facetious of course, but the whole issue of height has gotten out of hand.

i wish he would get some time with that team. dickel and penney were really good college hoopers in the US — couldn’t hurt to get some time playing with guys like that.

I knew Adams was too good to be true. With all respect toCoach Dixon, Pitt better scout for a new “big man” in the 1212 class. Rev. George from Columbus

Yes, good one, wbb. I’m not panicing yes. Just being cautious. I THINK I know how humans react to big bucks. Clergy, of course, are exempt. Keep on searching the scriptures for insight. Rev, George from Columbus–home of the BEST minor league baseball team in the nation.

I think Lippert was moved back to d-line this spring.

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 07.29.11 @ 8:21 pm

Scott Lippert can’t play. He was only a 2-star recruit for Christ’s sake!

Comment by John 07.29.11 @ 11:34 pm

don’r know about Scott Lippert, but Jack Lippert was a 4-STAR DE recruit

BGP, I believe you were right about he moving back to DL

It is not a secret that Adams could barely read until he was 14 or 15. He is being pushed very hard in an outstanding private school to “catch up” with others in his age group.
My gut feeling is that he will really struggle to meet the NCAA’s standards for entry in to a Division I program.

Comment by isnore 07.30.11 @ 4:06 pm

Pitt’s FB recruiting for 2012 has been decent so far overall; and, we know there is a long way to go (another dozen recruits or so will need to commit by February) and a lot can happen for the good (or not so good by then). That being said, Pitt needs some good OL recruits. Losing out head-to-head to WVU yesterday for an Ohio OL Pitt wanted is disappointing. The numbers of well regarded OL on the Pitt prospect list seems to be dwindling rapidly. Perhaps the JUCO ranks will be able to fill the need for OL if the current trend continues?

A very strong season on the field this fall is desperately needed if Pitt is to finish the 2012 class strongly and isn’t to begin to regress from a BE contender to just another middle of the pack (or worse) team in the BE, IMO. That isn’t the direction most Pitt fans want to go–they want Pitt to better than just a perennial contender for the BE title. They want Pitt to dominate the BE similar to the way tOSU dominated the Big Ten (but without the cheating, of course)!!

Comment by pitt1972 07.31.11 @ 8:37 am

My fear, pitt1972, is that no OL wants to join the Marines just yet.

Comment by steve 07.31.11 @ 3:59 pm

Off topic…but just when you thought it was safe to go back into the conference waters, Zeise drops the “E” word big time in his Pitt Red Shirt diaries column. If you thought the Big East had no shot at BC and Maryland, go check out the article…My choice is to get BC, Maryland, and Navy, to go to 12 teams in FB and 16 total in BB.

Butch Jones: “Don’t turnover the football.”

This is a conference that seems to not want to even play the game.

Weird. Really Weird.

Kudos to Skip Holtz. Lucid, sincere and the most self-confident of the BE coaches.

Jaylen Bond just committed to Texas. So that’s Sterling Gibbs, and now Bond. What’s with Texas all of the sudden swimming in our recruitment wake?

im curious to see how gibbs and bond develop at texas. barnes has won a lot of games, but he isn’t known for getting the most out of his guys. not sure if they are good fits there, but austin is amazing. can’t question bond’s choice too much.

Dan, Pitt basketball players play competitively against the elite in college basketball.

You’ll have to convince me that our football players do likewise.

Comment by steve 08.03.11 @ 9:27 pm

steve, just because Pitt is in the best BB league and plays in the most exposed conference which is situated in the biggest hotbed of BB recruits, while it’s in the worst and least exposed BCS conference which is becoming one of the worst areas for FB recuits … doesn’t make it a BB school.

Comment by wbb 08.03.11 @ 10:17 pm

wbb, you argue convincingly that….

Oh, never mind.

Comment by steve 08.04.11 @ 6:26 am

Why can’t we have both identities?

But, if I had my preference, it would be FB. FB pays the bills and is the more popular sport and always will be. No offense to the UConns, Kentucky’s, UCLA’s, Kansas, and Duke’s of the landscape, but I’d rather be associated with the football schools. I don’t want Pitt to be a BB only school. There’s just something about playing outdoors on a muddy field in the Fall, the violent contact, and most importantly the tailgating with friends that appeals to me.

Pitt was picked to finish second in the Big East behind the Hoopies. We just got Tom Rickett’s son back. Thank goodness he realized his mistake. Graham is a wizard at getting high quality transfers. Did Myles win the lobster eating contest? Bring on the FB baby!

Comment by TX Panther 08.04.11 @ 7:11 am

“Why can’t we have both identities?”

Indeed. Here’s hoping.

Comment by steve 08.04.11 @ 7:31 am

We do, people around the country look at us both ways. When you have the history that Pitt has and the names that have played for Pitt, it will always be a football school, and now that hoops has come along, we’re both.

It would take 20 years of Johnny Majors II to dissolve the football completely. Allthough not a fan of Harris or Wannsteadt, they had enough stars and put enough kids in the NFL, that we’re still known for playing football.

We’re fine. It’s good to have both!!!

Comment by Dan 08.04.11 @ 9:17 am

Agree with Dan. ESPN SportsNation is running a poll on the top college football rivalries. First of all, Pitt/WVU was included as one of the 5 choices which says something. Secondly, at this point in time it’s ranked #2 in the voting, which may be even more telling. OSU/Michigan is killing it but that’s to be expected.

As wbb said, it’s the profile of the BE as a great basketball and lousy football conference that skews the perception. Hopefully that changes with TCU and better competition overall in football.
