Yeah, Gibbs Will Be on Team USA

Technically, Ashton Gibbs has to tryout and make the squad to be part of Team USA for the World University Games. It was conceivable that the player that ended up being a key part of the U-19 gold-winning team of 2009, and one of the best players in the Big East might not make the team. The competition could be the factor.

I trained really hard for (the NBA Draft), but I think it was a good decision (to stay),” Gibbs said. “I get to play with Nasir (Robinson) and Travon (Woodall), two guys I came in with. I want to get my degree. And, I think we’re going to be a good team this year.”

And, he may play overseas after all. At the end of July, Gibbs will attend the camp for Team USA’s entry in the World University Games. His play last season (first-team all-Big East, 49 percent from 3-point range and 16.8 points per game) combined with his prior international experience (he and coach Jamie Dixon helped lead the Americans to gold in the under-19 World Championships in New Zealand) make Gibbs a favorite for the team.

In his mind, he’s a perfect fit.

“There are a lot of other good players there, but I don’t pay attention to the list,” Gibbs said. “I do the best I can and try to make a difference on the defensive end.”

Since Gibbs didn’t offer, some of the other 21 players are Xavier’s Tu Holloway, Notre Dame’s Tim Abromaitis, Missouri’s Kim English and Wisconsin’s Jordan Taylor. The camp commences on July 29, with first cuts on July 31 and team announcement on Aug. 8, when the Americans leave for China.

Yeah. Well Tu Holloway has already backed off from being part of the team.

As for Jordan Taylor

The need for minor ankle surgery will force All-American point guard Jordan Taylor of Wisconsin to withdraw from tryouts for the United States squad that will compete in the World University Games next month in China.

That leaves the tryout roster for Team USA without a true point guard. Instead, Mike DeCourcy expects Gibbs to be part of the group that will serve as point guard along with *gulp* Syracuse’s Scoop Jardine.

Showing he can run the point for Team USA is a big deal for Gibbs. He is going to be expected to do some of that with Pitt this year, and he needs to do it to increase his chances of getting to the NBA.

It does seem that there are fewer and fewer teams with a really quality point guard in the college game. Players believed to be point guards lately seem to be more like combo guards.

The “tryouts” are kinda stupid. Name the team and some “alternates”. What possible future NBA pick is going to go to a tryout and possibly get CUT. Dumb.

Didn’t he play point last year?

Gibbs brought the ball up, but wanny ran the point.

you saw how good a point guard Gibbs was in Pitt’s last full possession vs Butler … after holding it for 25 seconds, he tried to statt something with a about 10 seconds left in the play clock, but finally had give it up to Wanny who wa sout on the wing, double-covered with a bout 4 seconds left … long story, short, Pitt doesn’t get a shot off, giving Butler the ball down by one and with a stopped clock with 9 seconds left in the game.

We just picked up the Davis twins. Two speedy WR’s from Ohio.

Davis twins are both smallish (5-9, 5-10) slot-back type receivers. Both seem to be quality recruits (lots of big-time offers). ESPN has one a 4-star the other a 2-star. Rivals and Scout both rate each as 3-star recruits.

These kids had a lot of offers from BiG Ten and PAC 12 schools. Graham said he wanted speedy receivers…

wonder if the #3 who made some nice receptions on the tape is is brother?

Comment by wbb 07.24.11 @ 5:29 pm

from a picture on PantherDigest, it appears that thye made their announcement from the Austintown Quaker Steak & Lube. Since we have credited the “O” for helping with the recruitment of several linemen, do we have credit the Lube for this one?

I think Demetrius is the higher regarded recruit, and you have to imagine they were a package deal to most places because both held offers to pretty much every school except Demetrius held an offer from Oregon that his brother never received. They def are on the smallish side, but it’s good to see we are getting some higher regarded guys.

2:50 to 3:15. #2 throws the 55 TD pass from his own 40 and is the closest player to the WR when he crosses the goal line.

And good grief, that high school team has more uniform combinations than Oregon.

Comment by Cnorwood 07.25.11 @ 1:25 am

OK, time for some linemen.

Did they speed up that highlight reel. He is elusive with great moves and balance. If he grows a few inches maybe Q-B. Can you say… Pat White?

[…] there just aren’t a lot of good, pure point guards in college right now. If there was, Ashton Gibbs wouldn’t be a lock to help run the point for Team USA in the upcoming World University […]
