Burn It All, I Guess

Torn between rage and apathy. Very odd sensation. At the moment, I’ve drifted back to rage.

Right now Pitt football is a complete mess. The offense has played 3 good halves in 5 games. The defense is being consistently shredded; and even when it shows moments of competence, it can’t stop stepping on its own dick. Special teams… whatever.

The thing that jumps out the most, though. The penalties. Right now, Pitt is 113th nationally in total penalties with 40, and 116th in total penalty yards (379). That’s out of 129 FBS programs.

On all facets, Pitt has committed dumb, moronic penalties. Not out of enthusiasm. Not out of just being too energized. It has been of the undisciplined type. Repetitive, same stuff. The penalties are the thing of poor coaching. Where the details are ignored or tuned out.

Pitt has played two top-15 teams this year. They weren’t even competitive. The offense produced a whopping 13 points in those games. The defense gave up 89 points. Special teams — I can’t even. But, again, penalties. Two games against the best teams to date and Pitt committed 25 (accepted) penalties for 241 yards.

Looking at the defense. I’m not sure how you don’t conclude that Randy Bates has been overwhelmed as a defensive coordinator. We heard all off-season how a career position coach was an excellent hire. How disciplined and hard working he was. Grinding and earning this shot.

We also heard, when Conklin was pushed out, how he wasn’t running the defense the way Head Coach Pat Narduzzi wanted it. That Bates was the man for the job. And to help ease the transition, Narduzzi would be a little more involved. Hell, with the addition of a 12th position coach, Narduzzi opted to put it on the side of the defense. Splitting duties in the secondary to a cornerbacks coach and a safeties coach.

The DC spot is especially galling because the options for hiring a really good DC were there. Randy Shannon (now UCF’s DC) was available. Plus, he is an excellent recruiter in Florida. Scot Shafer — a longtime friend of Narduzzi’s even — was a possibility. Hell, he even began following some Pitt defensive players after Conklin left for Wofford.

Here would have been the issue, though with hiring veteran, established DCs — they would expect to be able to run the defense as they wanted. Or at least do some things their way. Not as Narduzzi wants. That’s fine, to a point. Narduzzi is the head coach. He has every right to want things done a certain way. But, then he has to answer for it, when it is clearly not fucking working.

It’s funny in a grim sort of way. I (and more then a few other) thought the potential downfall for Narduzzi could come from the decision to hire Shawn Watson as the offensive coordinator. And let’s be clear. As an OC — and the quarterbacks coach — Watson hasn’t exactly made anyone think he’s doing much more then a slightly below average job. That said, the defense has been the joke.

I don’t know. Narduzzi has definitely lost the fans. We all believed that last year was a bit of a transition with all the QB issues.  The team showed improvement in the second half of the season on both sides of the ball. Talking ourselves into the almosts. At Syracuse. The UNC game. At VT. Games Pitt shoulda, coulda won. But for the QB. A few bounces. Why, Pitt could have finished 8-4 instead of 5-7

Hell, I am as much a guilty party in this . I was sure that the defense was better. Now that the players were supposed to be in place. More depth. Everyone healthy. And the offense. Well, we were still feeling good about it all. I was convinced Pitt would be an 8-4 — maybe even 10-2 team. Sure it was possible that they could be as bad as 4-8, but no. Not really. Despite the non-con schedule, Pitt was going to be a better team.

Nope.

I still think Narduzzi survives this season. Not simply because of the extension. Remember how he was hired. It wasn’t a former AD. It was the Chancellor and an executive committee. People in power, even higher then AD Heather Lyke. They are still there. I don’t think they are ready to admit to being wrong.

That said, changes will have to be made. Watson is likely going to be gone at this rate. And it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Bates gone after only one season. Too much on-the-field problems are very clearly stemming from the coaching. The players are consistently out of position. Beaten to spots. The play calling on both sides are a crap. So much will have to change.

Sorry Chas, great article and I concur, but I think Watson and Bates sadly retururn, along with the moron we call our head coach. Sad state of affairs…

My prediction is 3-9. Who would have ever thought it, but Cuse is going to steamroll us…

Comment by Pap76 09.30.18 @ 2:42 pm

There was a reference on the previous thread to the Hart DePasqua era. As in hope it doesn’t get that bad. Having lived thru that as an undergrad that caused me to reflect on what those days looked like. And I realised that this season could be worse that what I always considered rock bottom. Dave Hart was a decent guy but a lousy head coach but even so if his schedule had been loaded up with rent-a-wins like Akron, Albany, YSU, and the rest he would have done as well as we have so far this season. So, yeah, this could be the beginning of the new rock bottom for Pitt football.

Comment by Dinosaur 71 09.30.18 @ 3:53 pm

Don’t know where to start. Our defense looks tentative. They are thinking too much and not reacting. This has been a consistent problem that suggests the defense isn’t well understood or taught well enough. It’s obvious that Pickett has lost his confidence. The expectations were way too high. The offense is a mess and seems to be getting worse. Penalties are killing our momentum. I guess you could blame coaching but who else is to blame. I don’t know where the program goes and what the next step should be. Pray that HL makes the right decision. I’m just tired of mediocrity…..

Comment by Trapper 09.30.18 @ 5:03 pm

Sadly I concur with one additional note that this defense is Narduzzi’s baby, he isnt changing it. The coaching of the whole staff is obviously awful. This will be the second losing year in a row. Good point on who did the hiring which is why we will have a third losing season, I cannot imagine with Narduzzi’s condescending attitude to media and fans alike, closed practices, bad recruiting etc. If next year is as bad as this HL will get to hire another coach. This is as down as I have been since Majors 2 and the 60’s. 🙁

Comment by RKB 09.30.18 @ 6:08 pm

Pitt should just poach the UCF staff if they are dumb enough to come here. Move up to Power 5, head-coaching experience, Florida recruiting connections, ACC money, proven turnaround — Went winless just a few years ago and now look at them! Just hire everyone of them now.

Comment by ck 09.30.18 @ 6:41 pm

I disagree with your statement that you do not believe Narduzzi will be fired at the end of the season if things stay the way they current are. If we go 3-9 or worse he will be gone. 4-8 is a gray area so I would not surprised if we have to put up with another season with the present defensive guru. Why would we need to fire the defensive coordinator if they keep Narduzzi? He has been the one constant through this horrid defense period. I remember how everyone thought Matt House was bad. Pitt under the “guru” is much worse and going downhill.

Comment by John in South Carolina 09.30.18 @ 8:59 pm

For many years especially during the 7O.s and 80s Pitt was a team to be reckoned with. Now, teams like Penn State and UFC look at Pitt as an easy win. A team that is not disciplined and poorly coached. There is no excuse for the Penn State and UCF blow outs. He has to go. I would call on HL to fire him if the losing trend continues. At best Pitt will have a 4-8 season. The team players deserve better and the Pitt fans are eager for a great hire that will bring Pitt back to the great days of Majors and Sherril. Hail Pitt!

Comment by Wayne B 10.01.18 @ 6:08 am

might consider giving HCPN a little more time if he admits there’s a problem. the first step in recovery is admitting you have a problem, right?

Comment by xkegroller 10.01.18 @ 7:30 am

Foge Fazio redux. Reputation as defense coordinator, no head coaching experience. Peter principle. Must recognize that head coach is a different job. Most important talent is picking assistants with talent, not friends.

Comment by 66Goat 10.01.18 @ 8:40 am

Sadly, I agree with most of your assessment. I have gone back and forth between anger and apathy. Right now, I’m in apathy mode because I’ve seen this movie so many times that I realize getting angry only makes my blood pressure go up. In terms of future direction, I agree that Narduzzi probably survives the season because the Chancellor doesn’t want to admit a mistake and because Heather just doled out an extension. Makes them look pretty stupid to fire the guy now. Regarding the staff, Narduzzi clearly should be making changes after the season, but consider this; who in their right mind would come to Pitt right now? What decent OC or DC will come here knowing that next season is very likely to be Narduzzi’s last at Pitt? Narduzzi has made his bed, now he has to sleep in it. Unfortunately, the long suffering Pitt fans will be dragged through many more years of ineptitude because of him. The hole we are in will get much deeper before we make any changes.

Comment by Santa Cruzer 10.01.18 @ 10:45 am

First Basketball hit rock bottom. Now Football. Why is it necessary to go that low? There is no reason to retain anyone from this staff except perhaps the GAs.

H2P!!!

Comment by Pitt Dad 10.01.18 @ 12:59 pm

If Pitt is only going to win 3-4 games, might as well get rid of the coach because you literally have nothing to lose. This same argument was raised constantly with Stallings as well. Is anyone in the administration and fan base convinced NEXT season won’t be another 3-4 win season? Probably not. What’s the point of keeping a guy around with this kind of production…especially knowing a turnout is unlikely in the near term.

Comment by Pitt of Glory 10.01.18 @ 1:54 pm

HCPN is not the savior, but he’s not damnation incarnate either. Pitt’s football troubles are deep and numerous. I’m not sure any coach could win consistently with the talent we have. Pitt faces so many battles on so many fronts that it’s hard to ascertain which things to address first. In no particular order:

Recruiting: What’s the real difference between a 3-star and a 4-star kid? Or a 5-star vs. a 4-star? You will find that, athletically speaking, they are pretty similar. The can all run a 40 time within a fraction of a 10th. They can all jump within a fraction of an inch. I contend that it is the cerebral part of the game that makes the difference. Call it what you like – football IQ, or whatever. That’s what defines teams – they all have raw talent. The cerebral stuff can’t always be coached, as we have seen. It wasn’t long a ago that Pitt, and many other programs, found a lot of talent in Florida and Texas – the “unwanted” talent that was still pretty good overall. With the shifting conference landscape over the last 5-10 years, a lot has changed. Programs like USF, UCF, Baylor, TCU, and others, are keeping more of that talent closer to home. But Pitt has to do better – and it’s no longer a matter of “having a presence”. You need to sell a story and a vision, which brings me to…

Conference: Pitt doesn’t belong in the ACC. Hear me out. It was the right thing to do at the time. It was the ONLY thing to do at the time, and we all know why they did it. But it’s still messy. By and large, the Northern ACC teams have not fared historically well in the conference. Pitt, BC, and Syracuse have all had their struggles at the bottom of the food chain, and I don;’t think it’s a coincidence. It’s a stretch to think the Northern schools can get the same kind of traction on a kid in the South East that even a non-ACC team can get in region. If you’re a 4-star kid who can’t land FSU, Miami, or Florida, you’re next stop is probably going to be closer to home – Duke, NC State, even Virginia/VA Tech. But Pitt is a stretch. Conversely, Pitt has a problem in its own backyard, because like it or not, this is Big10 country. Then it’s MAC country. I always thought Pitt would have been better able to recruit in the Big-10, even if they got the “scraps” because you’ve got North East talent that is looking to at least stay in the North East. Lots of other factors, but our “home grown” 4-stars start winding up in Iowa or Indiana (Perdue, not ND) or some place similar. The ACC in general has little appeal to them in the lower tiers of the conference. I don’t know how to fix it – but we’re winding up with 2-3-star sub scraps and that’s not going to win consistently in any conference.

Coaching: Do we need the “young up and comer” or the “grizzled veteran who knows who to get it done”. Does it even matter, because as mentioned, it’s a talent based game. Nick Saban might be “better” at Pitt than Pat Narduzzi, but he’s not going to be winning titles any time soon. As stated – HCPN is neither a blessing or a curse. He is what he is and it would be a stretch for anyone to come in here and move the needle significantly. We’re 30 years plus into giving the “next guy” his 4-5 years to build his program. It’s still not working.

Game Day Experience: I get it – read my lips – no new stadium. But overall something has to be done regarding the poor attendance and lack of overall enthusiasm at Heinz Field. It comes back to recruiting – kids want to play in front of a lot of people in meaningful games where they get media exposure. Noon games in front of 15-20K isn’t inspiring.

So yeah, we can blame coaching, and it’s not even wrong to do so, but to me it’s like worrying about the cough when it’s the cancer that’s killing you. Coaching to me is a symptom – the disease needs to be addressed.

Comment by 55 10.01.18 @ 3:22 pm

55… Well written and appreciated.

But it really is pretty simple.

Winning Coaches are GOOD Coaches FIRST… and GREAT Recruiters Second.

They are also SMART enough and well-respected enough to be able to surround themselves with other GOOD Coaches who themselves are able to become GREAT Recruiters.

And so it goes.

Unfortunately, Pitt has NOT had a GOOD Coach in a LONG time… at least One who was willing to stay long enough to fully realize the Fruits of their Labor.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.01.18 @ 7:10 pm

The team should be better in year 4 than year 1. It’s not. No injuries to blame. No bad calls to blame. No bad luck to blame …

If Duzz truly does not have an agent and if he negotiated the extension on his own, I would not be the least bit surprised if it’s easier to get out of than we would typically think. If we’ve learned one thing over the last few years, it’s that Duzz bets heavily on himself.

Just like attendance was ultimately Stallings’ downfall, I have a feeling that it will ultimately be what allows Heather to cut the cord sooner than later.

If attendance the rest of the way drops the way I expect it to drop, I’m not sure Duzz can survive one more season.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.01.18 @ 7:22 pm

55 good comments and analysis. One thing I would note as to recruiting was that in BB Dixon had recruiting problems due to himself, administrative support, recruiting base change with the move to the ACC etc. While it is still early it would seem that Capel as the coaching hire shows that Pitt can attract better talent than it has been. Who knows?
Narduzzi said a year ago he thought it would be year 5 when the program would take off. NASA we have a problem. 🙂

Comment by RKB 10.01.18 @ 7:55 pm

Agree Pitt will not build stadium but it is odd that 178 acres at the old VA headquarters is up for sale with the City wishing to purchase if for a police center they dont need. This land is in Pitt’s self described ‘sports complex’. Do you thing another university with Pitt’s problems would meet this with crickets? It does go back to administration vision especially on BOT. XKE good point but I read that the report only addressed present structures.

Comment by RKB 10.01.18 @ 8:07 pm

RKB, you are wrong about the land , they are not talking about the VA hospital on top of the hill, the land they are talking about is on the outskirts of the city no where near the Pitt Campus.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 10.02.18 @ 1:07 am

OMG , give up on the damn stadium bull shit, there is no place to put it , no money to build it. The new master plan is out and there is no provision for a stadium because there is no f n room. Why cant you people get it?
Miami plays in a pro-stadium many miles from their campus and guess what, they are going to beat the shit out of Pitt and they are ranked. How the hell do they do it? Better coaches, better recruiting period.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 10.02.18 @ 1:12 am

3-9 HCPN is gone. 4-8 probably gone. 5-7 we are stuck with him for another year.

Comment by I-79 10.02.18 @ 6:04 am

@Chas – did you happen to notice who has the fewest penalty yards in the country? Navy. Before we hired HCPN, I said I wanted Navy’s Ken Niumatalolo. That being said, he turned down Arizona. What could we do to get him to Pitt?

Here’s what I posted to the Blather on December 19, 2014.

********

A word of CAUTION about Narduzzi…

He’s been Coaching COLLEGE Football since 1990… 24 YEARS!!!!!

And NOT ONCE… a HEAD COACH!

An EMPHATIC “NO” to Narduzzi!
Comment by PittofDreams 12.19.14 @ 11:30 am

Comment by PittofDreams 10.02.18 @ 8:09 pm

And this…

********

Checking out some of Narduzzi’s interviews… he comes across personality wise a lot like Foge Fazio who took over after Jackie Sherrill.

If you remember, that’s when the Program went South.

Like Narduzzi, Foge was a good Defensive Coach who Players REALLY liked playing for.

But as a Head Coach, he was TOTALLY DISORGANIZED… a fish out of water.

Believe Narduzzi is much the same way and would be a DISASTER.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.02.18 @ 8:10 pm

The point is NOT a pat on the back… but a prediction for ye of little faith.

A NEW Pitt Stadium is coming. Probably not as soon as I and others would like. But it’s coming!

Comment by PittofDreams 10.02.18 @ 8:15 pm

Oh yeah a new stadium is coming . They just have to figure out what buildings to tear down and find someone who has about $250 million bucks.

Check out the new 5-10 building plan revealed last Friday. There is no mention of a stadium.
There is no room to place one, they don’t own panther hollow or any other space they can grab from the city. I just wish people would stop with the f n stadium crap, it is never going to happen.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 10.03.18 @ 12:46 am

Dreamer… Like I said before, I get the rationale of your opinion on this.

But things and people change.

We’ll see.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.03.18 @ 7:48 am

I do not buy the Foge Fazio analogy. Fazio inherited some of the best players on the planet and couldn’t win with them. He plain and simple wasn’t a head coach.

Narduzzi had two eight win seasons with Chryst’s players and a transfer QB brought in by Chaney.
Narduzzi may noy be a great coach but he is good enough. His problem is that he flat out can not get elite players to come to Pitt.
With Canada he had the best offense we have seen since Marino, so the other problem is coordinators.
But it all goes back to having playmakers. There are no Aaron Donalds, Boyds, or Conners on the team, no freshmen like Whitehead that lead the team in tackles as a freshman.
The cupboard is bare and that is on Narduzzi who has not overcome the obstacles that come with recruiting to Pitt.
I don’t care how great a coach you are, if you don’t have the players you lose. Chuck Noll is a good example.
Whether Narduzzi is a great or poor coach is irrelevant if he can’t get playmakers to come here.
Was Wanny a great coach, not really but recruiting Shady, Deon, Graham, Sheard and Romeus made him more than adequate.

Comment by gc 10.03.18 @ 7:58 am

Football was almost outlawed early in the 20th century. It is quite likely that by the mid 21st century, if not sooner, the game will little resemble what it is now or was in recent decades. Why spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a single-purpose facility that may be obsoleted by the elimination of its purpose?

H2P!!!

Comment by Pitt Dad 10.03.18 @ 10:16 am

I have a strange suspicion that Pitt beats Cuse on Saturday. This would constitute a major upset, and would screw up the prevailing wisdom that Narduzzi will be fired this year. But the euphoria won’t last long, and it could be the last win of the season. They could possibly win one more game, but that still leaves a 4-8 record which is not good but may save Narduzzi’s job for one more year.

Comment by VoiceofReason 10.03.18 @ 10:29 am

gc… the Foge Fazio comparison was also posted on 12/19/2014.

It was based on the little I or anyone knew at the time about Narduzzi.

In retrospect, not the perfect comparison… but pretty close I think.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.03.18 @ 10:47 am

He was a defensive coordinator that failed as a head coach. I give you that.

Narduzzi’s biggest fail is recruiting. If he recruited like Franklin, I think a lot of the other problems would be minimized, but we will never know.

Comment by gc 10.03.18 @ 11:01 am

Narduzzi doesn’t strike me as someone who enjoys recruiting. After being an assistant coach for 24 years, he may feel it is the assistants’ responsibility. He certainly doesn’t have a good bedside manner with the player’s family. Nothing says I want you to play for Pitt better than when the head coach shows up.

Comment by VoiceofReason 10.03.18 @ 11:39 am

Given Pitt’s lack of discipline causing numerous penalties, I think Pitt could declare a moral victory by eliminating them even if they don’t get a W.

Not having an on campus field is also a negative for team ownership and student experience. Students camping out for the big home games adds excitement and cameradory. But, it is what it is.

Comment by MariettaMike 10.03.18 @ 3:46 pm

Query: Since Pitt has a huge penalty problem why dont they hire a referee to attend practice and whistle any penalty, or do they?

Comment by RKB 10.03.18 @ 5:19 pm

But can’t a good HC “coach up” his players and find ways to compete against stronger teams? Isn’t that how the Urban Meyers of the world become the Urban Meyers of the world? It’s not like it’s a complete bunch of scrubs out there, right? There are some good football players on this team. But the coach doesn’t quite seem to know how to maximize the talent that he has. to say that it’s just that they don’t have the talent seems off to me. I see some talent, but I also see confusion and poor decision making, and to me, that comes down to the coach.
