Oh, Crap. It’s Game Week

Filed under: Football — Chas @ 6:23 am

Sorry. Just as I got back into the swing of things, the offline world intruded. Lots of work related crap took away most of my time. And then getting the kids ready and back to school finished the rest. Oh, and a cat adopted us. All very chaotic.

Needless to say, training camp is done. It’s a few days away from the season opener. Related note: hooray for a 3;30 start time!

So, what is there to say about training camp?

No one really got hurt.

Biggest, clearest and best takeaway.

Camps are almost entirely closed off to the media. That means we are dependent on what Pitt and Head Coach Pat Narduzzi tells us happened in the practices. I’ll skip (or at least keep it brief) my annual complaints about closed practices and that coach paranoia that is now completely commonplace. It’s spitting into the wind at this point.

That said, Narduzzi, the other coaches and the players all seem to be exuding a certain confidence and excitement about the team.

But the Pitt football coach raised eyebrows when he told Panthers fans at a kickoff luncheon Friday at Heinz Field, “Next time we’ll see you (will be) in Charlotte for the ACC championship game because we’re going.”

“I think it helps you. When you’ve got the ability to win a big game, you’ve got the ability to win every game, period,” Narduzzi said. “If you can beat a Miami and you can beat a Clemson, why shouldn’t you win an ACC championship? That’s pretty simple. I think our kids understand that, and that probably plays a part of why they talk like they do. ”

No problem with the confidence and stating the goal out loud. Here’s the thing about even last year’s frustrating season. Except for the Georgia Tech game, Pitt was close in every ACC match-up (NC State was close for about 3 quarters before Pitt faded out in the 4th). Two losses came down to literally less then 3 yards.

Pitt should be better this year. At QB. The entire defense. Probably the WR spot. Yes, the non-con is a beast. So what? Other then the UCF game, how do we — as Pitt fans — not want to see the Panthers playing games against PSU and ND?

Kind of jumping all over the place with a jumble of thoughts. Sorry for the incoherence.

Taysir Mack got immediate eligibility somehow, which means the WR corps improved and there is a ridiculous depth. Tons of questions still about the WRs. Mainly on if they have much of a ceiling. Nice players, potential. But we’ve yet to see a breakout.

Pitt loves well-traveled QBs on the roster. Now it’s Jeff George, Jr. (another kid that reminds me that I’m old). Graduated from Illinois in 2 years and transferred to Michigan this past spring. BUT, left during training camp and just joined Pitt. Trying not to make jokes about his father and teams, because I’m trying not to go with the “sins of the father” thing. It’s low hanging fruit, though.

The time of year to be optimistic.

Chas,

What is your prediction for this years record?

I thought it was funny that some local media were taking shots at Narduzzi for being optimistic. If they watched last year, they should know that 3 games could have easily shifted to the win column: Syracuse (3 pt loss), UNC (3 pt loss) and of course the goal line debacle at VA Tech. Thus 5-7 could very easily have been 8-4 and doing that with very poor and inconsistent qb play. This year has a nice mix of senior leadership and young talent. And of course I think the qb and defense will be better. So if they stay healthy and get some confidence early I could see Pitt having a fine season and surprising some people.

It’s great to be back in game week anticipation. Each year I am way too optimistic but this year there has to be a lot to all jell for this team to rise to the top. Not saying it can’t happen–just cautiously optimistic.

I will say this–if you look at the depth of talent at each position there has been a definite upgrade in talent from 4 years ago as Coach Duzz has built depth but question is can he win games when they are on the line and winnable?
We shall see beginning on Saturday. Not looking for them to show much in terms of schemes or formations. Hail to Pitt!

Chas – good to hear from you. Please.send me your boss’ email address. I need to request that he lighten your workload. I need my daily/weekly fix!

Can’t wait for kick off. This summer has been fun – as will be this season. Every time I say we are really going to be good this year, 5-7 slaps me upside the head! Dont know what to think – so I’ll stick with my “Glass Half Full” track.

We used to call his dad Vinnie Inceptaverde! Low hanging fruit indeed.

Hard to believe that there is not more pressure to open practices after that Maryland scandal.

Welcome back Chas, youse waz missed. I believe part of the confidence is having his own recruits, a more experienced DC, and more depth and talent overall. Except at QB. While all the talk has been of Pickett, naturally, the unspoken is what if he is injured? I presume Nard could have discouraged George but that he didn’t would indicate to me that is one area that he does not yet feel comfortable with his depth. (WR as well).
Agree 2$.
HAIL TO PITT

Hail 2 Pitt!!!

Can’t wait to shock the nation this year. See you in Charlotte!

I’m thinking 8 wins because the defense will be more consistent and Pickett is going to be a difference maker in those close games. H2P

We have to remember that Pitt has a new DC; new Secondary Coach , a new offensive line coach – all areas of weakness last year. Both Narduzzi & Jeff Capel ( basketball players of course ) should host / have no less than five 5* recruits on the sidelines for the huge Penn St. matchup next Saturday !!!

There are no 5 star players that want to come here.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 08.30.18 @ 12:40 am

Pitt Dreamer – let’s hope that changes soon with a winning tradition, starting in 2018. It wasn’t too long ago that BB was the hot ticket in town, but it’s been 35 years since we can say that about Pitt FB.

Found this article on PSN on Larry Fitzgerald – on of my top 5 that I’ve seen in a Pitt uniform –

H2P!

Erie- Agree on Fitz but other than TD (definite #1) who else is in your top 5? And which of those was more exciting to watch than Fitz? I’m thinking maybe Hugh Green but that’s probably it for me.

Comment by Dinosaur 71 08.30.18 @ 4:15 am

Hugh
Tony D
Dan Marino
Shady McCoy

Comment by Erie Express 08.30.18 @ 5:36 am

Good list, erie. I would put Fitz above Marino and McCoy strictly on the basis of spectacular plays. But they’re all memorable.
