Pitt Adds A Hall of Fame

Filed under: Athletic Department — Chas @ 7:28 am

I won’t lie, it never really dawned on me that Pitt lacked a formalized Hall of Fame for its past greats. We’ve seen them honored in the past whether with a number retired, ceremonies lauding their past achievements. Annual award ceremonies. Names etched in the steps near the Cathedral. But no Hall of Fame.

While my initial thought was “there isn’t one already?” Followed by wondering declaring one at this point a little redundant. It is still a good idea to formally create one.

The initial class of 16 has some you would definitely expect. In football: Dan Marino, Mike Ditka, Marshall Goldberg, Bill Fralic, Hugh Green and of course, Tony Dorsett. Basketball is Billy Knight and Charles Smith. There are two coaches included: Jock Sutherland and Doc Carlson.

Then you add in some true greats from the track and field history: Herb Douglas, John Woodruff, Roger Kingdom and Trecia-Kaye Smith. Finally Kathy Stetler (swimming) and Lisa Shirk (gymnastics).

There will be a big festive dinner to honor them and then, naturally at halftime of the Pitt-Penn State game, they will be presented to a large crowd.

The only debate at this point is why certain players were left out of the initial class — other then the fact that it would be a little too much to put everyone in at once. We know they will get to Pop Warner, Larry Fitzgerald, Brandin Knight, etc.

With the increased emphasis on all sports beyond football and basketball. It makes sense to form a Hall of Fame as an umbrella for all within Pitt Athletics.

Thank you Heather for the new Pitt HOF. It never occurred to me either but should have occurred to our past worthless AD’s.

She picked a good time to propose this after some hiring wins. Had she done it earlier, it would not have been received with such joy.

I vote for Thomas Darling, our only Men’s gymnastics NCAA Champion. On the Flying rings, an extinct event, just like our Men’s Gymnasts.

Sam Clancy deserves to be in the initial group and although Hugh Green is certainly deserving, Ricky Jackson was every bit as great. Interestingly those two kept Clancy from playing a year of defensive end at Pitt before he went on to ten years playing the position in the NFL.

Who is doing the picking as far as who gets in?

A great idea, long long overdue. Sooner or later those named above will be in. Keep up the good work Heather, Any word on where it will physically be? I am sure she has a plan and financial commmittment from donors and the administration, She is a keeper.

Names like Hennon, Harris, May, Jackson, Heyward, Pop Warner, Majors, Schmidt, Grier, Walton, Clancy, Vaughn, Beano, Hillgrove and Tiger Paul should be next

Interesting thoughts on Clancy and Jackson, they definitely get in, probably borderline for the initial class.

Green and Jackson both played linebacker in the pros. Clancy had to switch sports, not good enough to play BBall in the pros but a solid career at D-End.

Probably wasn’t Green and Jackson who kept Clancy off the football field, it would have been Meisner and Neil at defensive tackle on a 5 man line.

If pro careers are a consideration, Curtis Martin and Chris Doleman definitely get in.

I think Joe Schmidt should have been in that first class, but the team was so poor at the time, and it was a long time ago.

First Pitt guy in the NFL HOF.

I’ve become a big fan of our AD. For the first time we have someone in the position who cares about the fan experience and our national image. She frets about the details which other ADs passed over for the Big picture. She possesses both perspectives. Keep up the good work, Heather.
