Since Pitt joined the ACC, the games with Duke have been almost absurd offensive showcases.
The first two games saw the teams combine for 113 and 99 points respectively. Last year, Pitt hung 56 on Duke.
Even in the relatively tame 2015 game, Pitt put forth 31 points en route to a win. That was Pitt’s lowest scoring output. Outside the Rice, game, Pitt hasn’t put 31 points or moreup in their other 6 games.
Duke after roaring out against 1-AA NC Central and then Northwestern and Baylor has seen their offense disappear in ACC play. The 27 points they scored against North Carolina being the high point comes with the notation that 7 points came off a pick-six. Same as their 21 point outburst against UVa.
Duke’s offense relies heavily on the run. No one player either. In that respect, they are like Pitt with no particular back. Unlike Pitt, they are actually able to garner well over 100 yards on the ground as a group.
Their passing game has been shaky. A bit of a surprise for a Dave Cutliffe team.
Their offense has steadily declined in ACC play. Pitt’s has just been steadily bad.
Duke’s propensity for making interceptions is worrying with DiNucci and Pickett.
I’m thinking that this game — score-wise — will be maxing out around 40-something. That is unless Pitt gets a lot of special teams scores and/or Duke continues to ball-hawk on defense.
H2P!!!

Great ending at least according to the pbp online.
H2P!!!
Grateful for small victories.
H2P!!!
our running backs line up too far back, need to step up a yard. By the time they get the ball the holes are closed.
Quarter back needs to be more patient in the pocket, quick to run but those runs did help us.
The end run plays with Henderson don’t work anymore, do something else with Henderson.
Teach Brightwell not to hold receivers, caught twice for penalty.
Teach Jackson how to cover pass plays and turnaround and not run into receivers.
GIVE HALL THE GAME BALL.
Through over the middle more , short passes need a chance.
One hell of a growth game for many of these guys.
Duke quarterback bad passer.
Pitt wins and that’s all we need to know.
Really too bad we didn’t have this defense last year, they look to be turning the corner. Sad about Maddox but gives another young guy more experience. The backs are looking a lot better. Hamlin looking a lot better. I think the defense could be pretty strong next year.
Still a very painful team to watch, with very questionable play calling but happy for the baby steps.
Winning after going down 10 points is a very big deal, no matter how it happened.
This offense though … flashbacks to Wanny’s first two years and Matt Cavanaugh.
H2P!!!
