Morning, all. The first turnpike AM run into the sun and the new season. Feel the optimism, excitement and potential. Followed by those moments of doubt, dread and cynicism.
We’re all trying not to look past this game to the one the following week, right?
If you haven’t read the pieces on starting center Jimmy Morrissey’s journey to Pitt as a walk-on to scholarship starter. Enjoy them.
I never got around to mentioning the team captains this year. Jester Weah and Avonte Maddox were not surprises. Max Browne getting a captaincy was a mild surprise given his transfer status, but as the starting QB it has a certain NFL-logic. Dennis Briggs earning the final captain spot, just seems cool. A local kid, not heavily recruited that has worked hard to earn a starting spot on the defense.
Final bit of good news (sort of). We got through the Friday afternoon on a holiday weekend without a bad news dump. After this past spring, that’s a plus.
I’m concerned…
In fact, real garbage tastes better than the excrement Pitt lays on the field.
Based on the numbers and comments, seems Max Browne lived up to my expectations.
Let’s see what the next 3 games bring.
Make that ANY week.
Maybe that’s why it took so long.
As for that COOL logical, analytical thing?
That will say something about where things are headed.
All Pitt did was run Pitt’s base run offense from last season. Zero creativity … And it almost cost them the game.
I don’t think this is the norm. It was definitely not inspiring though. It definitely creates some anxiety for what’s to come. Shame on Duzz for this type of approach to a season opener. Just go out and play to your identity. This hiding the playbook nonsense is for the birds.
I thought Ollie had a strong game, but he needs a hole to run through, and the line disappointed at times. It will be good to have Bookser back.
The question is, was it vanilla by choice or is that who we are? It was apparent why Browne lost his job last year. College QB’s need to run, at least a little to get away from pressure.
My biggest fear was realized in that our D-line could not put any pressure on their QB. If this persists, the next two QB’s will light us up without mercy. Especially with wide receivers running wide open.
No doubt the dismissals and suspensions really hurt the defense.
Anyway, we’ll learn more next week. No excuses.
Let’s hope non-Vanilla has some flavor to it.
As for beating anyone else…gonna be a long season, followed by a long hoops season.
Zoiks!

TINO HAS BEEN REINCARNATED in the form of Max Brown.
I hope to god I am wrong but watching Max yesterday seemed all to familiar especially when he tossed the ball away when he could have picked up 3 to 5 yards by walking up-field with it.
I’m starting to worry how long it might take Narduzzi to realize that he’s not going to get the quality of kids he’s used to, and he may never get them. Yesterday’s game underscores the fact that we’re not really getting talent any better than that of the D1 AA schools. I watched the Florida State – Alabama game and it really is amazing when you consider the different levels that most of those kids are playing at.
Granted – YSU is the best of the best in 1AA ball, taking it down to the championship game where they lost yo James Madison -those kids know how to compete and win. Still, D1A talent should be able to offset most of that, and the coaching should take care of the rest. We didn’t get a lot of either. Sometimes I wonder if everyone would ultimately be happier if Pitt just went IAA – but then I guess we’d just get the bottom of that AA kids anyway and nothing would change.
