Open Thread: Pinstripe Bowl 2016

2pm, ESPN

The less said about the announcing crew, the better.

Hello, all. Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. Nice and peaceful with my family. Stayed off the computer for most of it, though, I did watch plenty of football and basketball. Sometimes it is just nice to watch games without the running commentary on twitter and elsewhere.

I have been and will be rushing about to finish work early to get home to watch this game, and probably roll right into the Marshall-Pitt basketball game tonight (there will be a separate thread for those who are also double-dipping). 2pm on a weekday sounds great when you are off from work, but when you still need to put in the time, it becomes a bit of an annoyance.

Pitt is the favorite in the game, and the defense is about as healthy as it has been. Though, I still don’t think Jordan Whitehead will play.

There’s not much in the way of animosity between the two coaches or programs. I mean, come on. It’s Northwestern. Other than noting certain media folk who went to their School of Journalism (Darren Rovell), there is nothing particularly hateable about Northwestern.

I also concede to having a soft spot for the campus, having spent a year in Evanston while working in Chicago after graduating from Pitt. It’s a nice campus.

I don’t get getting on the internet and bitching about sports games.
I’m looking forward to next year.

Hail Pitt

gc – LSU is hoping Canada brings the playbook he forgot today – instead he brought his cookbook “Gumbo for Dumbo” to NYC.

Comment by Erie Express 12.28.16 @ 8:14 pm

maybe we can stack the deck a little next year and play one of those deserving 5-7 teams. we sure as hell don’t show up for over 500 or 500 teams.

NW dominated every phase of this FB game today, including coaching.

Time of possession NW 35 min vs Pitt 25 min
Turnovers NW 2 vs Pitt 4
Yardage NW 468 vs Pitt 424
Score NW 31 (season ave 24) vs Pitt 24 (season ave 43)
Star RB NW 241 yards 3 TD’s vs Pitt 34 yards 0 TD’s
FG’s NW 1 for 1 vs Pitt 1 for 2
4th down NW 4 for 4 vs Pitt 0 for 4

And on and on and on…

Comment by Erie Express 12.28.16 @ 8:30 pm

disgraceful.

Comment by goalie44 12.28.16 @ 8:41 pm

We expect too much in two yrs. Hayward, Graham, and then no recruiting of value from Chyrst. There was no way you should have expected more.

We have a shit load of offensive talent next yr. Clark (if his attitude is okay) and Browne should give us additional fire powder. Defense?

Narduzzi has his work cut out with what he calls a defense.

I was at the game. The refs called it fairly.(I rarely say good things about officials.)

However, they did blow the head to head against Peterman. Should have been a personal foul and an automatic first down against Northwestern.

That was another non score series.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 12.28.16 @ 9:51 pm

Northwestern defense deserves some credit.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 12.28.16 @ 9:57 pm

HbgFrank — What makes losing on national TV so bad?

JackAgain — Top-tier not cheating just investing more $$ in their football program. Why is Pitt losing their OC to LSU? $$

Comment by MariettaMike 12.28.16 @ 10:16 pm

“… no recruiting value from Chryst.”

What a joke.

Do yourself a favor and go down the roster and mark off who the CONTRIBUTORS are and WHO recruited them.

You might start with the handful of Players projected to hear their name called in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.28.16 @ 10:19 pm

If this bowl game was so important, why did Pitt look so flat and make so many mental mistakes? I contend the players went to NY to have a good time and have fun as a reward for a winning season — playing the game was not top priority and I can’t blame them. NW on the other hand, wanted the win — and they earned it.

Comment by MariettaMike 12.28.16 @ 10:25 pm

At this point, coaching is the REAL suspect.

True, a lot of things went south for Pitt today and somehow they still found themselves in it when Orndoff muffed a gimme that would have tied the Game.

But regardless, you still have to find ways to win.

And so far, in his young career as a Head Coach… Narduzzi seems to be finding ways to lose.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.28.16 @ 10:27 pm

Dont mention Paul Chryst. I watch Whisky hoping that Gomer Pyle LOSES every game Big Time! I hated his slow talking manner and his horrible recruiting! He wont be at Wisconsin very long!!! They will run him out of town.

Comment by Boo Boo #1 12.28.16 @ 10:36 pm

@OPG, with all due respect, seeing a game in person does not let you judge the officiating better than our HDTV’s with DVR replay. It was far from the only reason but it was certainly one of the many and possibly the biggest reason Pitt lost. Not only the Peterman hit but Conner and a horrible mark on a NW run that game them a 1st down. The balance of calls were bad against Pitt.

Pitt fumbles and interceptions, legit penalties, and really execution overall was not great by the offense. The defense was as bad as ever with missed tackles and inability to stop 3rd and long and 4th and anything.

Dinucci gave Pitt a chance, too bad Orndoff missed on a very makeable catch. I don’t think MC would not want to show well in his last game here, but the mix just wasn’t quite right. I DO think Pitt looked affected by the cold and field conditions and thought NW was not.

Comment by TVax1 12.28.16 @ 10:38 pm

If you think Pitt will return to its glory years, good luck. Pitt will remain a middle of the road ACC team with a rare second or third place finish. I’m a Pitt fan longer that some Blatherites are old and a realist. When the powers to be tore down Pitt stadium I knew Pitt football was no longer a top-priority and accepted it. I enjoy Pitt football but know that the Steelers are Pittsburgh’s team. Pitt, like GA Tech, my other school, will always have a tough time filling seats for most home games. Tech has a few hard-core fans like Pitt just not enough of them like GA or PS.

Comment by MariettaMike 12.28.16 @ 10:40 pm

TVax, Have you ever seen the size of Yankee Stadium’s screen? My first time in the new stadium. Biggest mother I ever saw and very defined detail. WOW! I bet we had more replays than you!

Really, the only dispute was the head to head no call.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 12.28.16 @ 11:51 pm

No I haven’t seen the big screen but c’mon HD 65″ 4k with frame to frame manipulation of my DVR…I’ll have to disagree. You need to respect my skills with a remote. haha, πŸ™‚

Not worth the bitchin’ but the phantom PI against Pitt, the bad mark of the ball and the Conner hit. Anyone disagree or anyone else want to add to these?

Comment by TVax1 12.29.16 @ 12:07 am

MariettaMike, I don’t think we up in the Northeast ever think we will play on the level of the SEC. I think I can say this for most of the BC, Syracuse, and PITT people. We all want to be a #2 or #3 in the Conference on a regular basis. And that’s going to have to be good enough. The days of recruiting 50+ kids per yr are over.

The only way we can ever hope to win is for everything to be REALLY equal among the all schools. Ya, good luck!

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 12.29.16 @ 12:23 am

TVax1, have to admit din’t see the Conner hit. On everything else I mentioned no Bitching on the PITT side. And everybody looked sober!

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 12.29.16 @ 12:27 am

41 blasted Conner straight in the face with the crown of his helmet. The hit on Peterman. Henderson was face masked on his fumble. Horrible spot on the 3rd down catch & the next pass that bounced in to wr’s hands on a td drive. None of those are subjective like holding or interference. They had to review way too many plays & still got it wrong. There is no excuse for how horrible Pitt played, but the officiating was putrid.

Comment by Nick 12.29.16 @ 12:46 am

Tvax1 and OPG – the officiating was just as horrible as Pitt’s performance (both players and coaches).

The spot may have been the 3rd worst – not calling the two helmet to helmet hits cost Pitt their 2nd best RB (in it’s history) and their QB (9th best in nation). Conner being knocked out in the 1st half was a big blow – he is the team engine & motivator. NP being knocked out in the 3rd qtr cost Pitt the comeback victory.

Now let’s talk about THE SPOT (3rd down play). The NW receiver catches the ball a half yard short of the mark (clearly). The ref spots the ball incorrectly in NW’s favor and then, on national TV with the ball pinned to the ground with his hand, looks to the sideline for the chain mark, picks up the ball and moves it forward and past the first down mark.

Duzz went nuts and the review was granted. Like most reviews from this Pinstripe “Bowel”, the play stood as it was manipulated on the field. NW proceeded to score a TD when they may have punted with the correct call.

I could go on, but OPG and others don’t want to hear it and apparently did not see it. My wife screamed (in public) when she saw THE SPOT live and she is usually very quiet and shooshes me during games. But Txax1 asked for my opinion…

Comment by Erie Express 12.29.16 @ 4:46 am

The team which lead the FBS in red zone TD efficiency during the regular season at 83% started the game 0-3, with only three points to show for it.

If that’s not showing up for work late and not being focused, then, never mind…

Comment by Erie Express 12.29.16 @ 5:27 am

The bad calls just added to the bad start by the team/staff, which lead to a really bad result.

Comment by Erie Express 12.29.16 @ 5:29 am

I could not believe how the O started off by shooting themselves in the foot after the D got them the ball quickly at the beginning of the game. But of course it was all downhill from the get go as has been previously stated.O not sharp D not as bad as some prior games. Remember this W gave NW a 7/6 season maybe that is what drove them harder. Also heard Fitzgerald took them to NY early to get the city out of their system and still practice hard, it payed off.The turnovers resulting in lost scores for us and gained scores for them cost us the game. In addition the lack of ejections for targeting on Peterman and Conner was disgusting. On TV even Golic who dislikes the targeting rule could not believe they did not call the one on Peterman.

Comment by Pitt60 12.29.16 @ 10:22 am

Bad calls or not, it’s another loss to an inferior team.

Comment by Goalie44 12.29.16 @ 10:33 am

EE and Nick have it right. Replay reviews and they still get things blatantly wrong. Something(outcome)/someone(offiials) seemed to have been “bought”.

Comment by TVax1 12.29.16 @ 11:09 am

To Narduzzi’s credit he did seem to “adjust” in an effort to account for Austin Carr and NUs Passing Game.

Problem is… NUs Gameplan was clearly to RUN the football.

Narduzzi’s professed commitment to stop the Run first… was an ABYSMAL failure.

Of course, it must have been the Players’ failure to execute.

How could it not?

Comment by PittofDreams 12.29.16 @ 11:17 am

At this point, after two years and two Bowl game losses, both bad–Narduzzi needs to step up his game. Everyone love PN, but I feel like he’s being credited with something that we should just expect. Its my belief that he took an 11-2 team and made it 8-5. NW out coached PN. They knew what they had to do to win, practiced it, prepared for it and did it. Pitt didn’t. After Aston (who is a fine player) tripped over nothing and went down on the 1/2 yard line–I knew what was coming. Say what you will, but Narduzzi inherited a talented team. 8-5 with this talent is no big accomplishment. It reminds me of Foge Fazio. Everyone said “Foge this and Foge that”. Foge was really the force behind Pitt when Jackie Sherril was the coach….It was all false bravado. Foge sucked. I get the same feeling hearing people talk about what a great job PN is doing. Is he really doing a great job? He’s a defensive wizard so to speak and his defenses can’t stop shit. Its enough already.

Comment by Td 12.29.16 @ 12:14 pm

Lots of good points made by all on here.

With all the screwups by Pitt’s offense, left a possible 21 points on the field in the first half alone. And then all the calls/reviews went for NW, sans maybe 1 or 2.

One would almost think …someone wanted the game UNDER 63.5.

And it took ALL of THAT to keep it UNDER.

Capisce

Comment by Emel 12.29.16 @ 3:34 pm

please stop blaming “crooked referees” or some conspiracy to keep pitt from winning. its ridiculous. pitt lost because once again pitt failed to prepare and execute properly.

Comment by goalie44 12.29.16 @ 5:33 pm

Let’s see, NW is from the crooked, mob infested city of Chicago and playing a bowl game in the crooked, mob infested city of New York.

No way the refs could be “crooked? Right?

Pitt failing to be prepared and lacking in proper execution, ABSOLUTELY. (Saw it with my own eyes)

Could Pitt have won this game if the refs were “crooked”, but they came prepared and executed properly? YEP

Could Pitt have won if they weren’t prepared nor executing properly, but half the “official reviews” went Pitt’s way? YEP

Comment by Erie Express 12.29.16 @ 9:17 pm

rbk Get the Hell out of here A football stadium close to campus will make no difference Look it up When Pitt had a on campus stadium on the Hill They still Lost most of the Time so just stfu

Comment by Boo Boo #1 12.29.16 @ 9:26 pm

There’s no “conspiracy” against pitt. Unless you believe we never landed on he moon.

Comment by Goalie44 12.29.16 @ 11:17 pm

The Pitt offense just did not look ready to play when they hit the field and I will not speculate as to the reason, their actions backed it up. Well lets hope this doesn’t ruin recruiting which is next. Next year it the Duzs’ show. PS how about Miami knocks off The eers and Va Tech does Arkansas. The coastal gets tougher next year so Pitt better also.H2P

Comment by Pitt60 12.29.16 @ 11:55 pm

NU players were on the field 2 hours before game prepping. Pitt did not show up on field until ~ 70 minutes prior.

The Pitt players were just not as fired up as NU – that was very obvious. Even coming out for the intro, the team seemed distracted and flat.

The O play in the 1st quarter was tepid, reinforced by too many trick plays by outgoing OCMC (who palnned out the game to try and make himself look brilliant and worth a $$ million+ IMHO)and not enough JC up the gut to get him established. You could see the train wreck coming…

The D looked dazed and confused by the NU game plan to run almost 70% of the time…and never recovered. Inability to pressure QB on 3rd and 4th downs was deadly.

No effective adjustment on special teams was made when NU showed they were going to kick it short to deny QH every single time…Ibrahim (I think) got one around the 305 and could have lateraled to QH who was clean and running up the sideline behind him – QH had a lane blocked off and would have scored.

Refs sucked and it was obvious to everyone in our section. Never saw so many replays in a single game. They looked inept. Don’t think they were paid off; they were plain incompetent, slow, cold and also probably didn’t give a fart except it was a paycheck.

Even with all the above Pitt should have won anyway – the 1st quarter Offensive ‘no show’ did them in.

Comment by Tommymac 12.30.16 @ 1:40 am

Cincinnati: Notre Dame wide receivers / associate head coach Mike Denbrock has informed the Irish he has accepted the Cincinnati offensive coordinator job, according to Sports Illustrated. Denbrock has been at Notre Dame since 2010 and part of the play-calling.

So non-P5 Cincinnati hires a P5 coach as its OC from ND.

Tommymac – agree with you that everything about the NU game was bad from a Pitt stand point.

Conner with zero carries on the first series set the tone IMO.

I was invited to golf today at noon – temps in central PA are in the 30’s with a 21 mph wind. I’d rather watch the replay of the Pinstripe “Bowel”.

Comment by Erie Express 12.30.16 @ 6:45 am

Pulled this from the P-G –

Yankees manager Joe Girardi, 52, played college baseball for the Wildcats and is a friend of Northwestern football coach Pat Fitzgerald. But he also spoke about how he’s a big-time college football fan on Saturdays, one former and one current Pitt running back included.

β€œI remember as a kid watching the great Tony Dorsett at Pittsburgh and how much I loved to watch him play,” said Girardi, who won the World Series three times as a Yankees player and once as manager. β€œI think when you have players that represent your university like a James Conner, how can you not be proud to be a Pittsburgh alum?”

That takes some of the sting off of the Pinstripe “Bowel” loss.

Back to work…

Happy New Year all!

Comment by Erie Express 12.30.16 @ 7:27 am

It does??lol

Comment by Goalie44 12.30.16 @ 1:14 pm

Conner looked flat too and couldn’t score from 1 yard out. He decided to make it a dive play and kept the ball tucked under his arm instead of extending it out. Stupid 2.0.

The whole team & coaching staff as usual looked stupid, flat and outplayed like they do for 90% of their bowl games going back 30 years. Nothing new…..but it’s gotten real old….

Comment by Jackagain 12.30.16 @ 4:06 pm

Jack – really old – so old that I’m looking for a new source to spend my entertainment $ – don’t see it changing next year.

Comment by Erie Express 12.30.16 @ 4:20 pm

OSU gets blanked by Clemson, only NWU and one other BIG team won their Bowl games . Hope PSU follows OSU tomorrow. ACC leads power 5 in bowl wins. Too bad we could’nt contribute, maybe next year.
