Receivers Still Needed

Here’s a fun statistical anomaly:

We all knew that Tyler Boyd was the receiving corps last season. So, I guess it shouldn’t be a shock that he was over a quarter of Pitt’s yardage — with Qadree Ollison getting nearly the other quarter.

As deep as Pitt’s running back situation is. As much as we will all cheer every time James Conner touches the ball. Pitt will need to throw the ball.

The No. 1 receiver position is set in Dontez Ford. Who is not the biggest or fastest receiver, but is the most consistent, toughest and reliable receiver on the roster. The lost spiritual successor to Derek Kinder.*

Back in the spring practices it was about waiting for the receivers to emerge.

Yet, as he prepares to enter his fourth season at Pitt, [Jester] Weah still hasn’t caught a pass, unable to effectively mix his imposing size (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) with his impressive speed.

Perhaps, his hands haven’t worked as well as his feet, but he said the problem lies elsewhere.

“It’s all in my head,” he said.

Weah, who said he spent the winter catching 100 balls a day from the JUGS machine, is getting repeated opportunities this spring to earn playing time in the fall. Injuries to Pitt’s only experienced wide receivers — Dontez Ford and Zach Challingsworth — have made room for Weah, Tre Tipton, Quadree Henderson and junior college transfer Rafael Araujo-Lopes to make a case for themselves.

Currently, Weah and Henderson are lining up with the first team, with Araujo-Lopes filling the slot in three-wide receiver alignments. Coaches insist the depth chart changes daily, however.

Weah did catch balls in the spring game. I saw it. There were witnesses.

Yet, with a week to go before the season opener, stop me if this seems familiar.

He said he, Quadree Henderson and Jester Weah are taking the bulk of reps. Canada added sophomore Rafael Araujo-Lopes and redshirt freshman Tre Tipton to the list of the five who appear to be leading the way right now.

“Those five guys have separated themselves. It’s hard to do these things. Not that anybody else isn’t doing well and getting better, but those five guys right now are getting the majority of the reps,” said Canada.

“We’re going to start creating a lot of packages that we can use based on anywhere we want. I say it all the time, you have to play five and everybody else is a wild card. Now we start deciding how those things work, the percentages, and going into a game which guys should play. It’s also predicated on what the defense it going to give us. Certain games, it will be this, certain games it will be that. But those five guys are playing well.”

Several freshmen also are getting into the mix.

At least twice this preseason, the coaching staff has singled out true freshman Aaron Matthews by name when asked how the youngest of the receivers are doing. Matthews, a standout from Clairton, is vying for some time at receiver along with two other true freshmen, Maurice Ffrench and Ruben Flowers.

Yes, the WR depth chart is still one big question mark. Only with some more names involved as the freshmen are able to compete.

Jester Weah remains oh, so intriguing and oh, so much of an unknown as to being able to hang onto a ball in an actual game that counts (“The ball is my friend. The ball is my friend.”).

I would love to say I’m not worried. That this means more from the tight ends. That things will shake out quickly. And heck with the running backs, it won’t be a shock if the run-pass ratio skews to 65-35.

But…

Football is a now a game that needs to use the passing game so much more. Even if the defense grows into the dominance a year earlier, teams have to be able to pass consistently. Not just manage the clock.

On the bright side, at least I’m not worrying about the O-line this year.

* I love Kinder and would be willing to fight anyone — well, maybe glare intently — who says anything bad about Kinder. But Kinder was by definition an ideal #2 receiver.  The guy doing the blocking and extra stuff. Gritty, sure-handed and consistent over pure talent, size and speed. Not the guy you think of as an ideal #1.

Maybe I’m delusional but I’m expecting much more production from the offense this year vs last year because of better utilization of the resources. Simply, we have the most talent and depth at both OL and RB …. use them!

2014: 610 Rushes vs 308 passes
2015: 509 rushes vs 343 passes

2014: Total offense 435.4 ypg (ranked 43rd)
2015: Total Offense 377.5 ypg (ranked 82nd)

We scored nearly 3 more ppg in ’14 than ’15

… and of course, many of the points scored last year were in the 2nd half of losses after the game was pretty much decided (UNC, ND, Miami and Navy)

He’s back!! Yay!!

Off topic, Pitt website has the ‘nova game on ESPN3, but ESPN’s college football schedule shows it as a “no-show:”

Any clarification please?

3 articles in like 24 hours!? So much for just e a s i n g back into The Blather huh Chas?

1st time I’ve heard anything about Dontez Ford being injured. What supporting information do you have on this statement? What’s the nature of his injury?

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.26.16 @ 7:56 am

Good stuff Chas, like DR Tom, had not heard Ford and Challingsworth are hurt, there goes all our experience. Makes an even bigger question mark.

Like wbb points out running is our strength, but will need some completions by the second game.

Welcome back Chas. When I opened the Blather yesterday and saw the new thread it made my day! Nothing compares to your style and journalistic acumen. And after the Post Gazette trashed Pitt fans I have neither picked up one of their print editions nor opened up their web page so it is the Trib or the Blather. HORRAY!

–Seems like we need to throw Jester Weah like at least 10 passes in the Villanova game… Confidence comes from success.

–I’m expecting Aaron Mathews to gradually work himself into the WR mix.

–Chas, nice to see the Blather back active.

Go Pitt.

Comments about injuries to Ford and Challingsworth were related to spring practice.

While some crazily obsess over the back up QB, I am most concerned about the WR experience. I think they will be okay as Canada will put all of them in situations to succeed. We will need to establish a deep threat early (Villanova) to keep PSU and the rest honest. Really critical to have some success there. Look for someone to emerge in that role. Thanks for the post Chas!

Loved Henderson’s wheels last year but can’t recall his hands. If Weah clanks a few more in the first half v Villanova (worst looking hands since Ike Taylor…and ‘I liked Ike’), I say sit him and put Matthews in there — he got two “great”‘s from Narduzzi this camp, at that ain’t nothin’ to scoff at. Looking forward to seeing what Tipton can do as well.

Looking forward to seeing a healthy Challingsworth as well.

Love those oldies but goodies Derek Kinder.

What the hell is a “Writer’s Block”? Is that something he puts on a DB when he’s not the primary or secondary receiver? Chas – good to have you back in the saddle again (there’s a song in there somewhere!) I was afraid The Blather was going down the tubes! The Phoenix has risen!! Looking forward to your insides!!

Jeff and 94: Damn auto correct! Now that takes a lot of guys to reply like that!

Ahhh Chas – your first article and I have to disagree about something.

I don’t think we can say that Boyd was THE receiving corps last season. Not when Ford got 505 yards by himself.

Everyone overlooks what Ford did out there last season. His 19.2 ypc average was almost twice as much as Boyd’s 10.2. He had 55% as many yards as Boyd did on 65(!!) less catches…. I say again – 65 less catches. We should have been throwing to Ford as much as Boyd last year – we would have scored a bunch more points.

Personally, I think Boyd had a rather poor year last season and won’t be missed nearly as much as some think.

Comment by Reed 08.27.16 @ 8:23 am

Reed, I don’t think it is a fair comparison to look at Ford and Boyd last season. Every team we played “game planned” to stop Boyd. No team did so for Ford. And yet it was Boyd who found a way to get open, often against a double team, most of the time. I think that is where the “throw it to Boyd all the time” conspiracy starts and ends. Get open a lot and the QB will throw you the ball a lot. Boyd will be missed and a lot if Ford can’t beat those double teams.

Comment by HbgFrank 08.27.16 @ 8:42 am

I agree with Reed that we could have done better by throwing to receivers other then Boyd. I got the feeling watching him play that he was playing not to get hurt. He had his eyes on the next level and was determined not to get injured. I recall many plays where he went down too easy instead of fighting for those extra yards. He was playing afraid and this was reflected in his YPC. Frankly, I saw more fight from Ford and Challingsworth in their limited opportunities than I did Boyd. I believe if you watch him play for the Bengals this year you will see a different player effort wise than last year.

Comment by Jeff in CPa 08.27.16 @ 10:36 am

Why is this even a discussion?

Comment by HbgFrank 08.27.16 @ 10:49 am

HbgFrank – thanks for the memories on that video. Pitt will miss T.Boyd this year – sorry, but the receiver corp is weak this year. If it were up to me, I would split S.Orndorf and R.Ibrahim wide and throw to those two and let them make plays. Ford will be ok – I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see much else with Challingsworth being nicked up.

HTP!

Paulie had his faults as a HC, but he is a far better offensive mind than Chubbs could ever hope to be.

Comment by Emel 08.27.16 @ 6:26 pm

Emel – with Georgia’s star RB named Nick Chubbs, what will the Bulldawg fans be calling our beloved former OC?

Comment by Erie Express 08.28.16 @ 11:20 am

lol Erie.

Derek Kinder was good, but what about Latef Grimm.

Comment by Emel 08.28.16 @ 3:12 pm

More deep balls when we pass with more runs will jack up that anemic O of Chubbs. Oh and none of those slow wide pitchouts for losses or no gains. Maybe some quick hitters to Henderson with his speed.H2P
