Listen In…

Well, if Dan Marino demands it then it should happen.  He wants the Pitt-PSU series to resume (from the Trib):

“Why wouldn’t Penn State want to play us?” Marino said Wednesday. “To me, it would make sense.”

Pitt and Penn State will renew their storied rivalry over the next four seasons, starting Sept. 10 at Heinz Field. Pitt athletic director Scott Barnes said last year that Penn State officials have shown no willingness to extend the series beyond 2019. The teams haven’t met since 2000.

But Marino knows a way to put the series in serious jeopardy.

“We just have to beat them the next four years, and they definitely won’t renew it,” Marino said.

OK then.

Here are two podcasts by Chris Peak of Rivals.

The first which was recorded on May 5th is about Twitter and Tweets and how they can bite people in the ass.

Huh, this is news? I was talking with my Tweeting-Galore daughter last night about Twitter and said this; It used to be that you’d read something like “It is possible that player xX will…,” and you’d think about that statement and wait for other actual info to come out before passing any sort of judgement, or celebrate or be sad.

Now with Twitter this happens in a matter of minutes: “It is possible that player X will …,” to “It is rumored that player X will…” to “Hey, get this! Player X has.!!”.  All with no new info or any sort of verifications.

Plus – as this link shows and what Chris is talking about in this podcast – way too much stuff is twitted when the source is in a emotional state or just doesn’t really understand what the power of social media is.

I get why people use Twitter and why the media loves to use it. It has amazing power in political situations, emergency responses, etc… but personally I dislike it, don’t use it and don’t read it.  Too many times I have read a link to a tweet that has something fans hang their hats on only to find out soon, sometimes even the same day, that the info was bogus or sometimes just plain misinformation.

But that’s just me.

His later podcast done on May 2nd addresses his earlier “Top Five Pitt Players” blowback on his suggestions.

At minute 23:47 Peak talks about his day with Matt Canada and Pitt’s current QB situation and how not having any Pitt QBs drafted (save Tom Savage’s one year with us) since 1993.

Guys – it maybe time we quit ragging on other teams about being a place QBs go to die.  Having one (1) ‘recruited QB’ drafted since 33 years is a pretty good reason not to point any fingers.

Interesting stuff as he mentions a lot of Pitt football history in this podcast.  But his segment on why you need to get a big time QB every single year because players at that position so often don’t hold up to their HS rankings is very interesting… and pretty depressing.

When the best result you have from the last decade or so of QB recruiting is Tino Sunseri then it’s time to start tearing what is left of your hair out.  Hence the numerous offers Pitt has out to underclass HS QBs.

Well, Peak’s own website lists these Pitt offers out to class of 2017 QBs (note the last column, that where they have already committed):

Lindell Stone 3* PRO 5.6 6’1″ 202 Woodberry Forest, VA 23
Sean Clifford 4* PRO 5.8 6’2″ 207 Cincinnati, OH 9
Davis Mills 4* PRO 6 6’4″ 194 Norcross, GA 2
Jake Allen 4* PRO 5.8 6’3″ 204 Fort Lauderdale, FL 7

Pitt’s RB’s have been so good, Pitt didnt need great QB’s. But when your best has been Tino statistically (excluding sacks), you’ve done a poor job recruiting and developing.

Tino who?

When James Conner has beaten cancer and has reestablished himself as the guy that the other RBs must compete with for playing time, then we can quit worrying about how good our QB is because this Pitt team will be a steam roller running machine.
Peterman might not be NFL material either but he is plenty good enough to burn the opponent’s secondary when they must put nine in the box to stop that Pitt steam roller.
Many Pitt fans look at this year’s tough schedule and are concerned that it spells too many Pitt loses. I look at it and see only opportunity to prove that Narduzzi is building a team that can compete and beat the upper tier teams in the country.
If you want to play like champions you have to play enough good teams to appear legit. This schedule accomplishes that.

Haha – you’re showing your age Reed. There are different ways to use Twitter. Kids use it like Facebook to communicate with friends and get themselves into trouble. Adults use it as a news feed. Celebrities use it to communicate with fans. Fans use it to harass celebrities.

You make it out to be something much more devious than it is. Facebook and Instagram are 10X more obnoxious than Twitter. Stick to the “Adult” Twitter usage and it’s quite handy. Just a faster way to go through your bookmarks because you get live updates throughout the day. You don’t have to post anything or let anyone follow you … that’s what FB is for. I only use it to follow stuff and not vice versa.

What I don’t think you realize is that what happens on Twitter is exactly what happens in this comments section and other blogs or news articles except to a potentially bigger audience and often times a more selective audience.

Hard to be great without a great QB. We haven’t been great since Marino. But even the greatest QB can’t do it without a great supporting cast and that includes defense.

Penn State can’t use the tired argument in needs more home games for the revenue.

If you happened to check the Penn Live reports on Paterno, you would have seen a link to an article about Big 12 expansion. In it information was provided about how much money the Big 10 schools will be getting in their new contracts – dwarfing what the ACC schools get and the Pac-12.

Can these NBC announcers be any more pro capitals? I think I heard them orgasm multiple times over the capitals.

The Pitt baseball team took two from nd today in a South Bend doubleheader.

Those are the first baseball wins over nd in six tries since joining the ACC.

HTP!

Upittbaseball, where are you? We beat nd for first time! You should be happy

Dr T – It takes more of a great runner to produce a decent season. We always talk about and hear the old phrases “QB needs to manage the game” and ” A great running game will bring up the LBs & open up the passing game” but I’m not sure any of that really means much.

What you said last matters most I think – it really doesn’t matter if the points come by the ground or by air as long as your defense gives you a chance to win each game in the 4th quarter. It isn’t a coincidence that there is more than a 3 pt (FG) margin in PA/G between the worse of the last decade and the best.

When your defense is giving up only 19-21 PA/G then there is almost a guaranteed chance at pulling out a second half win.

Yr Player Att Yds Avg TD W-L QB
‘07 LeSean McCoy 276 1328 4.8 14 5-7 Bostick (24.2 PA/G)
‘08 LeSean McCoy 308 1488 4.8 21 9-4 Stull (21.5 PA/G)
‘09 Dion Lewis 325 1799 5.5 17 10-3 Stull (19.8 PA/G)
‘10 Dion Lewis 219 1061 4.8 13 8-5 Sunseri (19.0 PA/G)
‘12 Ray Graham 222 1042 4.7 11 6-7 Sunseri (21.1 PA/G)
‘14 James Conner 298 1765 5.9 26 6-7 Voytik (26.3 PA/G)
‘15 Qadree Ollison 212 1121 5.3 11 8-5 Peterman (26.1 PA/G)

Cardic Hill has a good article about just how very average Pitt football is (again). This time it is based on revenue and W-L records.

…and a linked graphic to go with it:

These recent articles are follow-ons to the March 24th piece they did about the same issues.

Wow!!

It is easy to tell that we are in that truly dead period before FB camp. There just isn’t any truly interesting about FB or BB to discuss.

Unless we get a BB or FB commit before camp that likely wont change. Almost time to go mow the lawn for excitement.

Comment by pitt1972 05.08.16 @ 8:30 am

Per ESPN: Pitt’s defensive front seven is ranked 5th in the ACC, placing them ahead of ALL their conference rivals EXCEPT Clemson who is one better at 4th.

If our front seven is better than most conference opponents, we should be able to run the ball with authority and that should ease OC Canada into his new position nicely.

Mow or golf? Can’t do both on Mother’s Day.

Enjoy your day men. Be nice to your wife and mom (if she is still on this great earth).

Pitt1972 – those Cardiac Hill articles are nice because this is the time we can talk about the issues that we don’t have the time to address when the camps and seasons are in full stride.
