Conner Opens With Pirates

This is pretty damn cool. The Pittsburgh Pirates open the season on Saturday, April 3.

That’s right. James Conner will be throwing out the first pitch.

Pitt junior running back James Conner will throw out the ceremonial first pitch when the Pittsburgh Pirates open the Major League Baseball season by hosting the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.

“I’m honored and thrilled to throw out the first pitch for the Pirates’ season opener and I want to thank everyone in the organization for this incredible invitation,” Conner said. “It has been a long time since I played baseball but I’ll make sure my arm is ready to throw a strike on Sunday. The Bucs’ road to the World Series begins this weekend and I can’t wait to be at PNC Park.”

One of college football’s elite players, Conner announced this past December he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. In the midst of his treatments, he has continued to surprise and inspire with his vigorous participation in the Panthers’ offseason workouts.

“Fear is a choice,” Conner said. “I choose to not fear cancer. I choose to fight it, and I will win.”

A native of Erie, Pa., and graduate of McDowell High School, Conner was selected the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year after rushing for 1,765 yards and 26 touchdowns. He was named to seven postseason All-America squads, including first-team honors from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

But Conner has been an All-American off the field as well. Although sidelined in 2015 due to a knee injury, he was honored as a member of the prestigious Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, a select group of football student-athletes who have made a positive impact on others and their communities.

Conner’s volunteerism includes time with Children’s Hospital, Mel Blount Youth Home, the humanitarian organization World Vision as well as the National Kidney Foundation, which honored him with its 2015 “Small Hands Big Heart” Award. During Conner’s hospital visits, he hands out his used game gloves as souvenirs to young patients.

Conner has finished four chemo treatments, and while not fully practicing this spring, he has participated in some drills and is constantly with the team.

Really, really cool. Great stuff from the Pirates and Pitt.

EVERY YEAR baseball season creeps up on me.

Happy for James!

Hope he cranks up 100 mile an hour fastball and smokes the catcher

Comment by BigB 03.30.16 @ 12:38 pm

I think James has finished nine chemo treatments and has three to go. He’s either done 8 or 9. So… 3 or 4 left for sure.

Comment by Mailman 03.30.16 @ 12:45 pm

Hoping he returns to the field and returns to form. Loved watching him play, seems like such a great dude. #connerstrong

Chas,
If the opener is on Saturday I believe it is the 2nd, not the 3rd of April.

Comment by pittman4ever 03.30.16 @ 1:21 pm

I think he just finished 9/12 chemo treatments.

Opener is Sunday April 3rd

This is Way, Way, Way cool! God Bless James Conner and the Buccos for being such a class organization!
Hail to Pitt!
Let’s go Bucs!

He better not throw a 100 mile an hour fastball for fear that the Pirates might sign him to a contract on the spot.

Who is James Conner?

Kidding – that should be a lot of fun for him… and maybe some publicity for Pitt football at the same time.

This is simply terrific!! Connor strong!!

A well deserved honor for a great young man!

Reed, did you know Bobby Davis from the Encore? What a great guy who I worked for as a bartender at Heaven.

Comment by Kuku YouKnow 03.30.16 @ 6:31 pm

Chance he throws a better pitch than Jeff Locke will all year: 64.7%

Comment by Deepelemblues 03.30.16 @ 7:30 pm

Does anyone, perhaps with some medical knowledge, know what a realistic expectation might be of Connor this year? Has he been working out? Will he be able to play this fall? Will he be as dominant a runner?

Comment by Lou in Indy 03.30.16 @ 9:28 pm

Mario Lemieux played either the same night of his last chemo treatment or the night after when he had Hodgkins in the early 90’s. Olli Maatta was playing within a week of his last chemo treatment for thyroid cancer last season. Mario had back issues that kept him from being 100% & Maatta was pretty close to 100%, although the thyroid treatment wasn’t as harsh as the Hodgkins. James should be at full speed barring any setbacks when fall camp opens.

Comment by Nick 03.30.16 @ 10:20 pm

PoD, the goal is to win football games. Even in Conner’s record breaking season, we won 6 of 13 games, 2 of them vs. Delaware and FIU. You need great players on both sides of the ball.

I wanted Conner on defense because we had no pass rush and because he would have been more valuable to the NFL if he was a great pass rusher.

No doubt he is a great running back, but 6 wins pretty much stinks. You can’t have all of your great players on one side of the ball. Do you still want Whitehead on offense too? Only one guy can carry the ball at a time.

Comment by gc 03.30.16 @ 11:24 pm

Kuku – His name is familiar but it was a long time ago.

Lou – Conner has 2 or 3 chemo treatments left. He has been working out all offseason at the Southside facilities and has been at all the voluntary off season drills (between players), workouts and now all the spring practices.

He isn’t full contact yet though but from what I hear he’ll be in uniform for the opener vs Villanova.

Personally i don’t think we’ll see any real production out of him until a few weeks in – maybe in October – if indeed he gets back to 100% at all. That is why in my other article I stated it might not be a bad idea to start Hill out at RB as I think Hill could be one of those HS RBs who comes in and blows up the field.

Anyway, as I do, I’m setting my expectations down to Conner being one of four RBs to play in 2016 but I don’t think he’ll be the featured back. But that’s me, others may have different opinions and the real decider will be not only how well does Conner do in fall camp but how well Ollison, Ibrahim and Hall do then.

Comment by Reed 03.31.16 @ 6:23 am

latest CBB coach salaries — pretty interesting:

Sean M is 3rd at nearly $5M (no wonder he stayed)

JD was 7th @ $3.3 total which included $1.7M in bonuses (probably for stuff like > 20 wins and making the NCAA — although they are not exposed)

I find it fascinating that the offensive rookie of the year is not living up to expectations in camp.

When he ran last year we won, when he didn’t we usually lost. Some guys are not good practice players. I know that frustrates coaches.

Also having a great line makes everyone better.
Runners run better, QB’s throw better, receivers get open better.

This should be our best O-line in many years.

Still interested in how the D-line is coming along, especially the tackles and Hendrix.

re: wbb,

What a stark and sad indicment on Dixon’s recruiting talent (lackthereof).

Comment by DD 03.31.16 @ 9:19 am

No way Connor is 100% for the opener. I agree with Reed, maybe by mid season. He has to have lost strength.

While Lemieux’s comeback was impressive, he didn’t take the beating a RB does. Not even close.

Chemo weakens the entire body and has many side affects. Bring him back slowly.

Comment by notrocketscience 03.31.16 @ 9:52 am

Ollison had great numbers for a freshman but I am not impressed by him. He doesn’t really have any moves and I don’t think he ran one defender over all year. For his size that is odd.

I think Pitt’s line is the best we have seen in many years. Hill would be ridiculous running behind them.

Comment by notrocketscience 03.31.16 @ 9:59 am

I hope we are all correct on our high view of Hill. However, if you recall Chris James’ HS highlight reel was even more impressive and we thought he would be our next great back. Didn’t happen! Point is simply that HS is not D-I!!! So lets hope for the best and see what happens. H2P

Comment by pittman4ever 03.31.16 @ 10:44 am

Agree with not rushing Conner.. Sounds like he is having a chemo treatment a month so that will take him through June… Then another 5 to 6 weeks to fall practice… Chemo is some tough stuff …need to get him healthy

Comment by BigB 03.31.16 @ 10:54 am

Lemieux didn’t have a few months to get back in shape & his back kept him from working out during the treatments. This was also 25 years ago, treatments & workout regimens have come a long way since then.

Comment by Nick 03.31.16 @ 10:58 am

the link at 7:56am is a good read. Thanks wbb.
Sounds about right to me.

Comment by pittman4ever 03.31.16 @ 11:01 am

I’m not suggesting they rush Conner. He’s a tough man with a great work ethic & attitude. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him ready to go for the start of the season.

Comment by Nick 03.31.16 @ 11:01 am

Pretty sure I read Conner’s chemo schedule runs until mid or late July. He’ll have August to recover. I don’t think he’ll be 100% at the start of September but I don’t think he’s going to take until halfway through the season to get back to form.

Comment by Deepelemblues 03.31.16 @ 11:02 am

Anyone know the status of who has quit or left the team for our slight scholly issue?

Comment by tedsptman 03.31.16 @ 11:04 am

Connor’s first start should be against PSU, even if it’s only for one play/series

Comment by dcpinpgh 03.31.16 @ 11:12 am

Any word on if Knight has accepted the offer? It was supposed to happen one way or the other yesterday, I thought.

Comment by panther94 03.31.16 @ 11:29 am

wbb thanks for the salary link – surprised not to see Roy Williams in top – must not include the money he gets for teaching classes. 🙂

Comment by rkb 03.31.16 @ 11:58 am

Thanks to both Nick and Reed, for your answers. They both make sense, and if Conner can get back to anywhere close to where he was, we’ll be very blessed at the RB position.

Comment by Lou in Indy 03.31.16 @ 11:59 am

rbk, pretty sure I read a while back that Williams’ salary is low because UNC is a state school and is restricted … and that most of his income comes from ‘external sources’ (I remember that term was used … but not the details.)

Comment by wbb 03.31.16 @ 12:11 pm

I still find it odd that a freshman runs for 1100 yards, and he isn’t “the guy”. We would have flat out stunk without him, and usually did.

Comment by gc 03.31.16 @ 12:12 pm

Some interesting stats,

Ollison 212 carries, 1121 yards, 5.3 yds per carry

Conner 298 carries, 1765 yards, 5.9 yds per carry

Conner was obviously the feature back and ran behind Clemmings and Rotherham, two fifth year seniors and future pros. It was Conners second year of experience.

Ollison ran behind a rebuilt offensive line and for a coach that favored the pass. It was Ollison’s first year of experience.

I am certainly not saying that Conner isn’t the better back, certainly in the red zone he is fantastic. I just don’t get the perception that Ollison is a great back as well. Certainly not as flashy and much less PR, but really productive.

Comment by gc 03.31.16 @ 12:29 pm

gc – it’s really the “look” test. Ollison had a very good season but he didn’t wow anyone. Conner has the wow factor.

… and this didn’t help his case

panther94-

No word on Knight yet. I’m thinking he will not return. Has an offer to be top assistant on Rutgers staff. Assuming he would not be top guy under Stallings. Played his high school ball in Jersey at Seton Hall Prep

Comment by Pap76 03.31.16 @ 2:10 pm

Just read wbb’s tribe link from this morning. Really hope Knight stays. Kind of pissed me off in regards to Dixon. It was definitely time for a change. Not sure if Stallings is the answer, but it’s pretty apparent Dixon was no longer the man for the job here…

Comment by Pap76 03.31.16 @ 2:28 pm

Yes I would hope Brandin Knight stays. Even he stays a year, he will have coached with another head coach. With the players coming back Pitt should have a good year. That could help him as well.

Comment by Justinian 03.31.16 @ 2:39 pm

In fairness, that article I linked just cited one example. However, it confirms my thought Jamie is not a good closer (maybe he should have brought in HCPN for that.)

I have no issue whatever with BK staying, would prefer it in fact.

Comment by wbb 03.31.16 @ 2:42 pm

I get the feeling Jamie’s people skills are lacking. His post game handshakes left a lot to be desired. May be the competitor in him, but my God these are your peers.

I get that was one example, but I’m sure there are others. Without Slice and Brandin recruiting may have been much worse…

Comment by Pap76 03.31.16 @ 3:04 pm

BK knows Stallings will close plus BK is a Pitt fixture. H2P

Comment by Frank MD 03.31.16 @ 3:34 pm

I can’t remember who it was, but I heard a reporter talk about a conversation he had with Ashton Gibbs & his thoughts on Dixon. Gibbs said that Dixon was a great coach, but he wasn’t a good recruiter because he was socially awkward. Gibbs would have some pretty good knowledge since he played for Dixon & had 2 brothers recruited by him that went elsewhere.

Comment by Nick 03.31.16 @ 3:45 pm

Pretty obvious that Dixon was uncomfortable speaking in his interviews. If he was like that on a personal level, no surprise that he could not close.

Not sure whether I care if BK stays or not, but it would be a good opportunity for him to learn from another guy. Depends on if he has a better option. Rutgers makes sense geographically for him.

Comment by gc 03.31.16 @ 3:56 pm

Tossing @ 1:10: I’ll defend Ollison on that one. When the video first came out, it started with Ollie just getting to the hole. The closest to him of the two defenders was the guy you see the lineman taking. You can watch Ollie’s head and shoulders just starting to turn to take him when the lineman takes on the same guy. At that point, it was too late for Ollie to shift his weight, and he fell harmlessly into the OL’s backside -just as the LB came thru the hole to get #4. Had the OL been a little quicker to take the first guy, OLLIE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN PERFECT POSITION TO STOP THE 2ND GUY THRU.

I watched that video about 10-15 times just to be sure that I was seeing everything correctly. IMHO, Ollie got a bad rap on that one. I hope you can find the full video to confirm.

Comment by Savannah Panther 03.31.16 @ 5:03 pm

Thanks Pap76. I’m guessing that he’s leaving, but hoping that he’s staying. If he leaves, we may never get another shot at him, ala Miller. I know that’s really premature and we sure don’t know if he’ll even pan out as a head coach, but my guess is he will be a good one.

H2P!
