Narrative of the Last Three Days

Filed under: Basketball — Chas @ 9:20 am

I didn’t get to watch the Pitt-UNC game until nearly 9pm that night. By then, I had seen the final score despite best efforts to avoid. With the knowledge of the final score, watching the game takes on a different perspective.

From that POV, Pitt went toe-to-toe with UNC for nearly 30 minutes. A team that was a preseason #1 and still thought to be one of the deepest and best teams nationally. Pitt had their usual lapse near the end of the half — which is also a credit to UNC turning up their defense. But Pitt didn’t wilt after going down by 4 at the half. They battled with UNC for the next 10 minutes before UNC started going on spurts. Still scoring and their defense disrupting Pitt completely.

Part of it is that UNC is just so deep. They could regularly send in waves of 3 players at a time completely fresh. Wearing Pitt down, as Pitt’s bench has shrunk (with good reason).

Another part is that UNC has more than one, true big man. Kennedy Meeks. Brice Johnson. Pitt couldn’t counter. Meeks isn’t nearly as good as projected, but he is still big, strong and decent footwork. Brice Johnson was just overwhelming. Sheldon Jeter or Ryan Luther had no chance against either of them.

Still a final score that had Pitt losing by 17 is still a thing. And that night (I know it started shortly after the game, but I was nearly 12 hours behind reality) you could see the tweets and articles speculating on what that did to Pitt and the NCAA Tourney. ESPN and Joe Lunardi — after having Pitt safely in the field with the Syracuse win — had suddenly moved Pitt to their “last four in” list and spoke ominously of them possibly being passed after Friday’s action. Most other outlets were not that dire, but seemed to suggest it was a little shakier.

Then UNC played Notre Dame.  [Aside: I only watched a bit of the first half and some of the second half on my phone. My daughter was preforming in her school musical at the same time. She was awesome, thanks for asking.]

Whatever the feelings about Pitt, went out the window as UNC took the Irish apart. They stayed close for 15 minutes and then saw UNC run them over. A 19-point halftime lead. A final score of 78-47. ND was shut down on offense.

Suddenly the narrative shifted again — which continued through last night as the Tar Heels won the ACC Tournament. It was now all about how UNC had finally started playing with defensive intensity to match their offense. Jay Bilas on the broadcasts went on how it started just before halftime against Pitt. (I would quibble over that, a bit. I would say sometime in the second half. That end of the half spurt was as much a Pitt thing. Plus ND didn’t exactly control the game in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Pitt was keeping it close. To say nothing of UNC shooting 59% in the game kind of makes the defense ramped up argument a bit of revisionism.  But I digress.)

And if you noticed, just as quickly as Pitt was in the bubble talk, they disappeared from it. They were no longer showing up in graphics of “last four in,” or teams that really have to sweat. The loss to UNC was no longer indicative of the weakness of Pitt, but that UNC was playing its best ball at this time.

Now we wait for the brackets to be released this evening. The projections have Pitt somewhere in the #9 or #10 spots. Realistically the range could be as high as 8 or as low as 11. I would expect closer to 10 or 11 than 8-9. I think I would prefer Pitt to be a #10 seed than #9, as the optimist in me can create an easier scenario where it would be more likely to upset a #2 seed in the second round than a #1 seed.

Nigel Hayes is their scorer. We need to alternate our best defenders on him for a full game. Reminds me of NCST Barber or VA Brogden.

Frank MD – can you name our best defenders? Maybe Luther and

Clancey – Fair enough. Let’s beat these asshole from Wisconsin. Please Dixon!!

Glad it’s not another noon game….that’s a good time slot.

Vegas line just out has Wisky as a 1.5 pt fave.

I saw Wisky take a 15-1 Maryland team apart on their home court. They are 11-2 in their last 13 games and play sound fundamental basketball. Pitt doesn’t !

Still we may have the more athletic team. 1.5 points? Someone thinks this is a close game!

Here’s the time schedule:

Fair enough back at you UPitt. First glance at Wisconsin boards sound just like ours – Pitt will be tough but beatable, Xavier is the best possible 2 seed opponent. Winner after that could could be WVU or Notre Dame- long shot to get that far but Pitt has the opportunity right in front of us. Wisconsin win is the first step. Wisconsin beat Syracuse in overtime in December, lost to Purdue.

Comment by AnotherClancyRebound 03.13.16 @ 7:40 pm

No slack for Pitt. Crappy non-conference schedule ranked 183. Overall strength of schedule 27.

After reading a trib piece today, I’m getting the idea Barnes is a little frustrated with Dixon. He said the same things about the OCC schedule which essentially is nothing.

Jamie has veto power. I used to think Barnes was dragging his feet. But Dixon is dead weight.

Let’s celebrate we got in at a low seed. Let’s cheer for victories. But no delusions. This program is a cut above mediocre. It’s the hoops version of the Birmingham Bowl on Groundhog’s Day.

Hey Tony..what article are you referring too? I missed that one. thanks

Comment by milobloom 03.13.16 @ 8:20 pm

Pitt needs to play up-tempo and make their damn shots. Then they have a chance. Because they wont play any D. I like the match-up. Even Xavier if Pitt gets there. Do not like goin against WVU. They will press us and JR will fail.

Question – Is it good enough just to make the Dance but have horrible moves or better to not be invited at all?

I dont think Pitt can advance to Sweet 16 or better yet the Elite 8 so is the Dance worth it?

I’m more excited about the Spring Game for Pitt Football. Is it wrong to say that?

Comment by TX Panther 03.13.16 @ 8:41 pm

TX, I’d say our hopes aren’t very high for this team for years to come.

Comment by Jackagain 03.13.16 @ 9:10 pm

From ESPN’s breakdown of all 68:

38. Pittsburgh Panthers
After finishing eighth in ACC play in per-possession offense and defense, Pitt is so thoroughly mediocre, and so obviously destined to lose on the first weekend, that we’d be less surprised to see Stony Brook in the Sweet 16. Wait: Does that make Pitt a Cinderella?!

I misidentified source as the Trib. It’s the PG.

I agree the seeding is fair. If the Panthers had not let the Miami game slip away and had one of thir last two regular season games, they would have been seeded higher. I glad they made the tournament. No one gives them a chance and Wisconsin is playing great ball right now. But we all saw how well Pitt played in the 1st half against North Carolina, a much more athletic team than Wisconsin. This Pitt team is athletic and hopefully a little bit of rest will do them good. Besides, the favorite doesn’t always win. Isn’t that why we play the games?

Comment by Justinian 03.13.16 @ 9:46 pm

UPitt – kudos to baseball team blanking UNC 5-0!

Comment by markp 03.13.16 @ 9:52 pm

We know if Artis and JR have good offensive games, and Jeter, Luther or Johnson contribute, we win. JR probably playing his last meaningful game.

Unfortunately that has not happened often enough.

That’s why this team has been a crapshoot all year.

The match-up is not great, but maybe not terrible.

Comment by gc 03.13.16 @ 10:11 pm

Has Jamie beaten a higher seeded team yet?

Comment by gc 03.13.16 @ 10:12 pm

Mark – They played a flawless game. All phases. Was great to see today especially given the previous 5 we dropped in a row. Next weekend will be a huge challenge. Pray it is cold! Haha.

Comment by Upittbaseball 03.13.16 @ 10:18 pm

Pitt has beaten one higher seeded team – Colorado – two years ago. That’s it.

Comment by Tony77019 03.13.16 @ 10:18 pm

Dixon beat the 8th seed Colorado as a 9 seed. So basically no, but technically yes.

Comment by Jackagain 03.13.16 @ 10:21 pm

Most all agree that Pitt’s noncon schedule needs improved but Pitt still gets an unfair rap for 183 ranking. Only 2 Big 10 teams had noncon rankings under 200. Pitt would benefit from some earlier competition but let’s not pretend they are the only school to play nobodies.

Comment by AnotherClancyRebound 03.13.16 @ 10:42 pm

I’m glad we’re in. But I think we worried for nothing because Syracuse got in also as a same #10 seed! Only conclusion I can draw is that it pays being in the ACC.
……unless the committee took into account Boeheim not being there for those games. Which would be wrong because the Cuse was being punished for violations.
Anyway, glad we’re in, not real happy we’re playing the Cheeseheads being as they are playing their best bb now over the past 15 games! Just hope it’s not a 1& done again!

TCU coach fired…….

Comment by Dan 03.14.16 @ 12:06 am

Dan: TCU didn’t wait long. Will they pursue Dixon? If so, will it distract him?

Comment by Sfpitt 03.14.16 @ 1:15 am

Rossi in the Tribune Review banging the drum for Dixon today. In his 13 seasons as head coach he made the tournament 11 times and won 8 of their first games(overall record 12-10). More interesting IMO would be his record versus the higher and lower seeded teams in the first round(and all rounds for that matter) Tony has stated we beat a higher seeded team only once that being Colorado two years ago.—I’m with Upitt in that I don’t believe we are getting our money’s worth for $3.3 million.

Comment by Jrnpitt 03.14.16 @ 3:45 am

Not impressed with Rossi.

Comment by PittofDreams 03.14.16 @ 5:43 am

Goes beyond yesterday’s article on Dixon.

Comment by PittofDreams 03.14.16 @ 5:49 am

One of the reasons that Pitt almost always lost to a higher seed is that last decade, the were mostly seeded 2 or 3, thus, wouldn’t face a higher seed until the Sweet 16 or Elite 8.

Comment by wbb 03.14.16 @ 6:05 am

That said… as for the current state of Pitt Basketball.

Can be summed up pretty much as “Better lucky than good.”

Pitt puts together all of the pieces for a very SPECIAL day against Duke. But then mysteriously the pieces fall apart.

The “lucky” comes in with Pitt drawing Syracuse in the ACC where it wasn’t hard to see Pitt had a REAL chance of winning… since it had already happened TWICE and history as a PREDICTOR being what it is.

Now maybe a bit of luck again. Wisconsin seems to be very BEATABLE.

The only question is whether the Pitt Players are able to shoot anything close to “lights out”… and Jamie able to keep his cool and avoid the meltdown toward the end.

Here’s rooting for Pitt’s first win in its effort to deliver Dixon his first ever trip to the FINAL FOUR.

Luck can sometimes go a long way.

Comment by PittofDreams 03.14.16 @ 6:10 am

Glad for the early leaked bracket pairings on the Internet yesterday. The Bracketology show was sickingly slow and the commentators were ridiculous. Maybe this will end the two show that should be over in a 30 minutes including commercials.

Jamie must be reading the Blather because he commented on USA Today about reading Pitt’s seeding way before it was announced.

Comment by MariettaMike 03.14.16 @ 6:42 am

Interesting Factoid on Pitt in the NCAA Tourney. The number of wins by team since 2000 are :

1. Kansas 38
2. MSU 36
3. Duke 34
4. UNC 34….
Wisconsin 24
Syracuse 24
18.Pitt 16
18.Memphis 16
18.Gonzaga 16
21.Xavier 15
Oklahoma 13
Villanova 13
Indiana 12
WVU 12
Purdue 12

We are very close to getting passed by a lot of programs unless we win one or two. Will find ourselves around 25 with no wins this year in my opinion. We really need at least one for perception.
