Late in the GT game, you could feel Pitt flail about looking for someone to score. Jamel Artis wasn’t it. A second straight game where he was horrible. Both were on the road. After being so good against Duke last Sunday.
With the regular season over, the stats don’t lie about Artis not being anywhere near the same player at home versus on the road.
Here are his overall scoring numbers in 18 conference games:
FG: 86-206 — 41.7%
3FG: 29-89 — 32.6%
2FG: 58-117 — 48.7%
Now the splits
HOME
FG: 51-106 — 48.1%
3FG: 16-44 — 36.4%
2FG: 35-62 — 56.5%
ROAD
FG: 35-100 — 35.0%
3FG: 13-45 — 28.9%
2FG: 23-55 — 41.8%
The misses that come inside the arc that have been killer. A nearly 15% drop.
The sub-par shooting only partially accounts for the difference in Artis’ scoring. At the Pete, Artis averaged 16.8 points per game in ACC play. On the road: 10.8
It isn’t hard to make an educated guess as to why. Shot selection. Specifically, settling for jumpers and not as much attacking the basket. All you have to do is look at the free throws.
Free throws in 18 ACC games: 47-64 — 73.4%
Home: 33-45 — 73.3%
Road: 14-19 — 73.7%
Shooting percentage is nearly identical. It’s the discrepancy between the number of free throws attempted at home versus the road that borders on ridiculous. Averaging 5 FTAs a game at home to barely over 2 on the road. It goes beyond anything where the home teams gets the benefit of the whistle. There were 4 road games where Artis did not get to the free throw once.
Unless Artis attacks the basket, he can’t be counted on in the game. And it is no secret that for Pitt to have a chance in games, both Young and Artis have to play well. Young has stepped up the last couple games, but Artis has been miserable. Hardly a coincidence that Pitt lost those games.
“Panthers head coach Jamie Dixon’s name was recently linked to the UNLV head coaching position by a radio broadcaster in Las Vegas.
Dixon was asked about the speculation this morning, saying, “That’s the open job this week? First I heard about it. Thanks for letting me know about it.”‘
Cream puffs aren’t reality. Everyone has them, sure, all the more reason to just cut out the inflationary numbers and just look at the real stuff.
Last 3 ACC seasons

Mediocrity. Because of the ACC?? We’ve been in the conference for 3 years now. Great coaches adjust play, adjust recruiting, whatever you need to do. Analyze and see what needs to be done. We didn’t just join the ACC this year.
I’m not anti-Dixon. I, as a fan, which is what fans do, and sure thousands of others, came to expect top 20 rankings, and few conference losses like we had for 10 years or so.
I’m a fan, it’s what we do. I thought we had achieved a place where we would be pretty good almost every year. Obviously, I was wrong.
Please, don’t give me “next year”, or “a lot of schools would be happy to be where we are”.
I’ve seen enough of that on Twitter from a few people.
I don’t care about other schools, and I don’t care if Robert Morris, Duquesne, Northwestern and Colorado State wished they were Pitt.
Pitt’s my only concern.
However, I’ll defer my judgment until I see the 10 or so teams that Barnes is actually bringing into the Pete.
Now this coming season with 2 guaranteed good games at a neutral site (MSG) and an away game (B10 match-up) .. I would like to see Barnes bring in in WVU which will start the annual series. Thus, when Pitt plays at B10, they host WVU .. and visa versa every other year.
But of course, this won’t happen because it makes too much sense
I mean, I haven’t seen anyone asking for 12
top 20 teams at the Pete.
Give us 2 or 3 games out of the 12 or so non cons at the Pete.
Is there a rule, we have to play 12 Jacksonville States??
And please Pitt people, don’t start the teams are afraid of the Pete. Ain’t no one scared anymore.
On CBS Sports Network’s “Inside College Basketball,” former longtime coach Pete Gillen was asked Sunday what Pitt’s 76-62 win against Duke meant for the Panthers.
“Pitt in their non-conference schedule was 11-1 but they played funeral homes, tattoo parlors, supermarkets and families. They played nobody in the non-league,” Gillen said. “They needed good competition. They need this win because their non-conference schedule was brutal.
“I love Jamie Dixon, but they don’t play anybody.”
In my view, that essentially makes them 1-3 versus teams in the current top-25 (the 3 losses are to teams still ranked in the top-25).
How does that record get them #3 in the nation and most likely a #1 seed in the NCAA tourney?!?
Pete Gillen is idiot if you listen to him enough…and he was a terrible coach at Virgina….Pitt’s non conference is not good but it’s far from the worst as he wants you to believe……
.and for those you hoping to see it improve some next year…I think you are going to be disappointed..
..Considering Pitt got screwed with the next two years Home and Away teams in ACC play.
LV, Syracuse, NC and Virginia…and then LV, Miami, Syracuse and Duke…I don’t see Pitt going out on the road and playing any hard teams.

If true he’ll be here 3-5 more years.
Evans could recruit because that was when Pitt (Golden Panthers) actually ‘paid’ the players…how do you think Pitt football became so good during that era…basketball team became good a few years later by doing the same thing…you think Charles Smith and #1 recurting class came to Pitt for Roy Chipman without getting something on the side. ….it was great recruiting by bending the rules.
Baseball team was swept by New Orleans in 3 games.
Wrestling team finished last in the ACC tournament on Sunday.
Basketball team lost their season finale to GT.
Hockey team, wait we only have a club team.
Golf team, don’t have one…
Lord I am going to enjoy the pain he will inflict!
Done with Pitt BBall. Playing golf Wednesday. Noon tee time.
Gutless coach less wonders have 0 chance.
So Dixon to Illinois? The Sloghin’ Illinois?
I had no idea what OCC schedules for the Miller boys looked like so I did some research for this year only.
Archie’s Dayton squad played Xavier, Iowa, Vanderbilt and Alabama. X is a long time rival much like our WVU ….if we played them…which we don’t.
That’s a damn fine schedule especially when it is common knowledge that The OSU refuses to play them. Let me look up Sean’s OCC.
Sean’s AZ squad played Gonzaga, Providence, Missouri and UNLV.
Not great, but not as bad as…well, as bad as ours.
My tee time is at 10am. I’ll be finished in time to catch the tail end of the cuse III game. I don’t have any desire to look. I’ll have numerous e-mails from work to check.
If I have a good round of golf, heck with them both…
Further, without the stress of him taking the field, he may be even a better hitter
Most Blatherites … Dixon is spiraling downward, not getting good recruits, no longer in Top 25 annually
Counter … JD is by far the best HC Pitt has ever had and except 87-88 and 73, has coached the best 10 years this program has ever had. The only reason he is criticized is that he cannot reach the standard he set for himself
Both are true
Yes, an 47k seat OCS would be great .. and we have to do is to buy a city block, tear down one building, move another and install a light rail system.
Yes, let’s get a new BB coach even though the current one still averages > 20 wins … all we have to do is to pay him $12-15M .. and the fork out $3M to a new coach
I suppose you all want free healthcare for everyone also .. and at the same time, slash taxes
That standard must be a little HIGHER than Jamie’s seeing how he seems to be MORE OK with the way things are than I am.
Listen .. I am frustrated but also pragmatic.
Sometimes change is needed just for the sake of change. Just to get the juices flowing.
Had that game continued to a conclusion and had we won, who knows what might have changed this season and what people would be saying about our non-con among other things.
H2P!!!
Now, with the new admin and its apparent focus of upgrading athletics, maybe there is a chance that changes will be made. But considering the cost of making a change at HC as well as the fact that the program is still among the top 25% of the programs … maybe we have to temper our hopes/expectations and be more realistic
Either go the distance or go Ivy.
Frankly, I’m OK with the latter.
Does Barnes think Jamie can change the trajectory of the program? Will we get better or worse under his leadership?
I think next years recruiting class to replace the current juniors will be a turning point one way or the other.

You know if they beat Cuse tomorrow we will both have to golf when Pitt BB plays a game – that is until they lose.
A lot easier to make shots when everyone is making them.
