FB Bits & Pieces – 1.18.16

Huh, maybe those continuing phone calls from other schools to Tom Macvitte are getting answered.  Mike Vukovcan of KDKA reports this:

“**Source tells me that Pat Narduzzi and OC Matt Canada have an in home visit tonight with QB Thomas MacVittie. I think it’s becoming quite clear that MacVittie is a HUGE priority in this recruiting class.

**The offer yesterday to 2017 QB Matt McKay (Raleigh, NC) is an interesting one. McKay is the ultimate dual-threat quarterback as evidenced by his 46 combined touchdowns this past season.

Here are the HUDL highlights of McKay’s JR season in HS.  You can skip the ad after a few seconds.

Vukovcan is full of interesting stuff, here is a bit of speculation on his part:

**Here’s a name to keep your eye on: Derrick Green. He’s a former 5-star running back for Michigan. However, he’s graduating this spring and announced he’s going to be a graduate transfer.

I received a message from Green last night and he told me that he’s interested in looking at Pitt and making a visit. I’m hoping to do an in-depth interview with Green later today.

Green played sparingly last season for first year coach Jim Harbaugh. In 9 games this season, Green rushed for 158 yards on 47 carries and scored 2 touchdowns. For his career, Green has totaled 898 yards on 212 carries and 7 touchdowns.

At 5’11 and 240 pounds he’s be the hammer in the backfield… maybe we bring back the Fullback a bit more?

Werner of the Post-Gazette is doing a Countdown to Signing Day 2016 where he is reviewing the recruits we are bringing in and reminding us who we already have at the various positions.

Here is his first one, published in his Red Shirt Diaries:

“As with most quarterback prospects, MacVitte will almost certainly redshirt in 2016. Still, he’s talented enough that I wouldn’t be surprised to see him make a push for the starting job as a redshirt freshman in 2017. The spot will be open, and he has a better recruiting pedigree than both DiNucci and Bertke, even though those two will have the edge on him in experience.”

That pretty much echoes what we have written on here last week about the current state of the QBs and who may be heir apparent to Peterman when he graduates after this season, assuming we don’t get a QB transferring in, which we need desperately.

The staff is targeting Andrew Ford for a transfer in to bolster the depth after Peterman.

Ford’s HS STATS

Games Passing
Year PA PC Pct Yds TD Int
2014 (Sr.) 11 238 161 67.6 2,776 35 7
2013 (Jr.) 11 339 225 66.4 2,957 35 9
2011 (So.) 153 103 1,362 12 2

70 TDs and 16 INTs is damn good for a HS player.  Last year at Lackawanna College he had 24 TDs to 6 INTs so he can play football.

Pitt’s Holtz, Lucas selected for NFLPA Collegiate Bowl is a Trib-Review piece done last Friday.

Here is an article by Chris Harlan of the Trib on the recruitment of Central Catholic’s Damar Hamlin, the recruit Pitt has been chasing for a few years.

“Among them, Pitt, Penn State and Ohio State came for senior Damar Hamlin, the four-star defensive back who’s still uncommitted. With less than a month until signing day, all three remain in the running for the McKees Rocks native.

Notre Dame was Hamlin’s fourth finalist, but he has since faded. “We don’t want it to be some surprise on signing day,” Central Catholic coach Terry Totten said, “but he still has to go through the process with those schools.”

Are you reading this Robert Foster?  It seems you pissed more than a few people off with your LOI Day drama.

Here is another bit from Harlan:

“Still a few undecided

Eleven of the state’s Top 35 senior football recruits remain uncommitted, according to Rivals. Among them are Central Catholic’s Damar Hamlin (No. 4), Philadelphia Prep Charter’s Karamo Dioubate (No. 5), McKeesport’s Khaleke Hudson (No. 14) and Woodland Hills’ Jo-El Shaw (No. 17).

Shaw, a running back, recently rescinded his verbal commitment to Western Michigan. Dioubate, a defensive end, decommitted from Penn State last week.

Hudson, a safety, visited Michigan this weekend.”

Here is something to get Emel back – he’ll come out of his hiding place like a moray eel attacking a passing guppy with these stats.  They show clearly that Sunseri was almost as good a QB as Marino.

Comp Att % Yds YPA YPC TD INT  &  TD: INT Rating
TS     736 1141 64.5 8590 7.5 7.5 49 23     &  2.13 137.9
DM    693 1204 57.6 8597 7.1 5.9 79 69     &   1.1  127.7

“If you knew anything about football, you would realize that Tino deserves the hate he gets. He was the most tunnel visioned, indecisive QB I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching in my entire life.?”

When he looks in the mirror, Tino always saw and still sees himself as a Ferrari… when in reality he is a ’72 Flareside Ford Pickup with a lot of ROUGH miles.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.19.16 @ 8:45 am

But for that ONE year under Chryst, he wasn’t too bad.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.19.16 @ 8:54 am

Anybody know if the game is on in Central PA tonight? Poconos are getting it on My TV, I’m hoping we are as well.
Need a win tonight to keep us in the top end of the conference standings. Also to get the lingering Louisville Pitino taste out of my mouth.

Comment by Justin 01.19.16 @ 8:56 am

LOI day coming up and we’re talking about Tiny?

Comment by Grizzly1 01.19.16 @ 8:57 am

Just heard that the diary college just hired Herb Farkle as their new ballboy. He was also named CO-CO-Defensive Coordinator and Associate-Assistant Head Coach. Previously he was Assistant ballboy at Alleghany Community College.

Comment by DionJag 01.19.16 @ 8:58 am

Grizzly… puts into perspective how far we’ve actually come.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.19.16 @ 8:59 am

Guys, I enjoyed the recruiting information and the not so happy comments for Happy Valley. I’m still pissed off from Franklin’s boast “We’re going to dominate the state.”

Comment by Justinian 01.19.16 @ 9:18 am

They need to be careful, watched about 10 minutes of NC ST – UNC the other day/night?

NC ST was winning most of the 1st half, tied at half time?

Guess UNC won going away a bit, but from the minutes I watched, NC ST isn’t terrible.

Comment by Dan 01.19.16 @ 9:51 am

here is Plain Dealer article on Hamlin’s OSU visit. link to cleveland.com

Sounds like he was impressed but not ready to commit

Comment by wbb 01.19.16 @ 10:13 am

I guess Henry Miller is pretty good if Miami and OSU now appear to want him. I would ask him, where do you think you will get more playing time?

Pitt has an ad for single game tickets for all home games on the front page of the PG. I told you there are a lot of open seats. Hopefully fans will take advantage and help fill the place. Duke included.

Two articles about tonight’s game, one about Rowan, the other about all of Jamie’s other recruiting misses, Anya, Freeman, Barber, although Barber never visited. Hard to understand how they have lost six in a row.

Hopefully the part about us being better and them being worse will make a big difference tonight.

The Zoo is going to go crazy on Rowan. His coach says he will love it and it will inspire him. We’ll see…

Hope the rest of the fans show up, should be a real good contest.

One very positive thing is that Narduzzi is in the hunt for guys that are being recruited by big time programs and not MAC or Ivy league schools.

He won’t get all of them, but the ones he does get will elevate the program.

Hopefully these guys recognize the Boyd vs Foster example. Even a pimple on someones ass can be a star and go early to the NFL if they come to Pitt.

Comment by gc 01.19.16 @ 10:27 am

Think it is tough to keep your job at OSU? The guy that played brilliantly and won three games to win the National Championship was benched. Cardale Jones.

Comment by gc 01.19.16 @ 10:34 am

How many guys languish on the bench at the perennial powers when they could be starting somewhere else and improve their chances at a Pro career?

Before the rule limiting scholarships, the big guys would stockpile players just so their competitors wouldn’t get them. After the rule went in, Bo Schembeckler lamented, how an I supposed to win now?

Somehow I don’t that Duzz and the boys are going to use that line with recruits.

Ted Marchibroda, played QB for the Bonnies. Art SR always had a thing for the Catholic school players. Shame he didn’t stick with Johnny U who was a catholic HS star. Back then Louisville recruited kids from the area. They had some connection to here but I can’t recall what is was.

Comment by Chethejet 01.19.16 @ 11:12 am

Football kids today have tough decisions because of all the info and temptations provided by coaches. I actually think it is harder in BB. But we have to fight to get what we need to compete with the monster state schools who seem to have unlimited money and personnel.

Comment by Frank MD 01.19.16 @ 11:16 am

As far as personality types go, Franklin is a pure promoter. The Elmer Gantry of college football. That’s an asset for recruiting, obviously, but he sorely lacks analytical ability. The very best coaches are great analysts, often with dour personalities. Details, details.

Pitt Town Hall Meeting tonight at 6 (?)

Werner PG is attending and tweeting updates

Comment by wbb 01.19.16 @ 12:12 pm

This is really rug cutting time in recruiting. The guys that are left are the really good players that can’t make up their minds. Watts says no decision till signing day and he still id hoping for more offers. Looks like a big day on the 29th with big time recruits coming in.

Comment by gc 01.19.16 @ 12:20 pm

Looks like it’s going to go down to the wire with some of these recruits. I like our chances better with this staff than the previous one. Probably gonna lose a kid or 2 and end up landing one or two good ones(hopefully).

Shame to hear Miller wavering, love his size and athleticism and think he can really excel in Pitt’s defense. Macvittie you simply can’t lose. Pitt really needs to have a couple legit D1 quarterbacks moving forward.

I know they are paid quite well to do it, but to have to kiss these kids asses and have some of the ultimately bail on you at the last second, has to be frustrating at times

Comment by Pap76 01.19.16 @ 1:02 pm

Who is going to town hall tonight from Blather?

Comment by Dan 72 01.19.16 @ 1:17 pm

Pitt’s fortunes on the line in both Football and Basketball in the next few weeks. Football’s trajectory could really improve with a strong finish to the recruiting class.

We will also find out how good Jamie’s experiment is with transfers. Important to the program that it is perceived as heading in a positive direction. Over the next few weeks will it exceed expectations, crash and burn, or hold it’s own?

Comment by gc 01.19.16 @ 1:26 pm

@Pap76, well put. We’re not gonna get them all, we’ll get some, we’re gonna lose a couple.

Not Chicken Little time when we lose a few, it’s recruiting. All schools are in the same boat.

Believe it or not, Alabama loses recruits to Auburn, Clemson and Fl. State.

It happens.

Let’s hope we get a good percentage of who we’re after!!

Comment by Dan 01.19.16 @ 1:37 pm

Dan – well said.

High School cut by the Steelers.

Don’t understand the obsession with Tino.

Comment by JR 01.19.16 @ 2:17 pm

–Going to try to get to the town-hall meeting tonight.

–On Shaw, the highlights on the PG blog are much more impressive than some highlights I saw of him previously. I didn’t think he was worth a scholarship before, but he looked impressive on the PG highlights.

–Still, while Moss and Shaw both look like good backs, neither are the wiggle-back that we need, IMHO… Washington has better lateral quickness and change of direction, to my eye.

–Hope Miller sticks with Pitt – he’s a “major” talent.

Go Pitt.

Getting caught up after rotator surgery. Tony in Hbg THANKS SO MUCH FOR TINY’S HIGHLIGHTS -LMAO. Did Emel put that together – all the Pitt moves and more – head on into his lineman, over and back on LOS. Only a boy wbb can love – but better than Marino -LOLOLOLOL

hey, Tino has a ring and actually played well in a few games for that championship ‘Rider team a few years back.

Comment by wbb 01.19.16 @ 7:10 pm

Thanks wbb for the video. The most I’ve seen of either.

Both pretty HEAVY in the lower body to be much of a breakaway threat at the next level.

Especially after they get their meal ticket to the Towers and a trip to Training Table every day.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.19.16 @ 8:12 pm

Letter of Intent is Feb. 3rd.

I think maybe it’s always the first Wed. in Feb.

Go Pitt.
