2pm at the Pete.

ESPN3 or plenty of RSN options including Root Sports Pittsburgh, Fox Sports South, Fox Sports North, YES and NESN.

BC is not a good team. That doesn’t mean they can’t give Pitt some fits, but they are exceptionally bad on offense. They might give Pitt some problems with a decent defense, but I expect the Pitt players to be looking for some blood after Thursday.

The dead period of college football recruiting is over and there are plenty of verbals and potential verbals on campus for this game.

Maybe because back in my day they didn’t hand out trophies for participation. You actually had to win place or show to get a medal or a ribbon. My kids had closets full of trophies from the events they played in. Pretty meaningless. Self esteem and all of that. It is like the massive number of bowl games. Can’t fight progress, but I miss the days when there was just the Rose, Sugar, Cotton, and Orange Bowls. If you made it to one of those it was special.

Larry got his jersey retired, but all I will remember is how loudly Pederson was booed. Now that was special.

DD – he bailed in that thread. He had a mini meltdown after you stopped checking back.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 01.17.16 @ 7:37 pm

what gets me is that UPitt had in the past got on Boyd because he thought he had a bad attitude and was a prima donna …. and now he prefers Bryant over Boyd?? Are you fucking serious?

Comment by wbb 01.17.16 @ 7:57 pm

Bryant had talent but I thought talent-wise Baldwin had the 2nd most amount of natural talent (behind Fitz) of any Pitt WR. But Like Baldwin, Bryant had a million dollar body and two cent head

The BB team with 7 straight tough games until we run into WF and Cuse. I’d love to see them run the table, but realistically, a 5-2 run through those 7 games is very good.

Miami and UVA with very tough D’s are included in that tough 7 game stretch. UVA just lost to FL State.

Comment by Erie Express 01.17.16 @ 8:58 pm

Erie, I’ll gladly take a 5-2 run … no questions asked.

Comment by wbb 01.17.16 @ 9:02 pm

Bryant did win the Biletnikoff Award, Boyd never did. So he is at least comparable to Boyd.

And Bob….you may want to have a few months of posts on here before you come out and excoriate a long standing poster here.

Welcome to the board BTW….

Comment by Jackagain 01.17.16 @ 9:43 pm

Wbb – Both hot heads and prima donnas but Bryant had talent and lots of it and had a nice pro career.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.17.16 @ 9:45 pm

Well TT that is a bummer, there was blame both ways I suppose and I have seen much worse over the years here! I needed some time away and I guess he does too and hopefully feel OK when he comes back.

Comment by DD 01.17.16 @ 9:52 pm

DD – Voytik is the reason he’s taking a break, not your disagreement. I wouldn’t sweat it. He’ll be back.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 01.17.16 @ 11:15 pm

DD – no harm done. He will be back. He’s part of the Pitt family.

Bob, I don’t know you. One thing you don’t do is start bad-mouthing someone who has been commenting here for a long time. I’ve had my disagreements with Emel, but I respect him. Based on your comments, I don’t respect you.

H2P!

Thanks Jackagain. I learned a new word this morning. Now if I can just figure out how to use “excoriate” three times in my vocabulary before I forget how to spell it, then it will become part of my personal lexicon.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.18.16 @ 9:27 am

@ bob, welcome and you like Emel are entitled to your own opinion. Based on those opinions and how vehemently they are presented however will be directly proportional to the flack that will be returned your way in response, which I’m guessing you are already comprehending.

Don’t let that inhibit your posts. It’s part of the Blather banter that is normal interaction, more civil here usually than on most other fan chat boards in fact. The only people that the Pitt Blather administrators have an obvious issues with are the trolls that consistently attempt to disrupt the rational dialogue that is the norm here. So if you’re not a troll, you’re good.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.18.16 @ 9:44 am

Everyone – the reason Emel checked out is because I made a comment the other day that some fans I met in Annapolis read this blog on a daily basis but didn’t comment because it seemed that there were mean spirited commenters on here.

Then I wrote that the two subjects that were mentioned most often to me on that score were Voytik v Peterman and the continual jumping on Tino Sunseri and his time at Pitt.

That was when Emel said “How about this Reed, you and those 50 people… won’t have this poster to worry about” or something to that effect. It wasn’t Bob or anyone else. It was me and my comment that pissed him off so much he felt he had to leave.

But Bob – I will chime in with this; this blog is NOT like the message boards or other sports blogs you may read and comment on where sniping and insults are regularly traded. The tone here is overwhelmingly civil with some heated arguments but those are always grounded in respect for the other poster… 99% of the time.

You may not know this but the readership on The Pitt Blather is off the charts as is the amount of comments we regularly get on each article posted. Because of that I remind everyone that what they write and say on here isn’t for a small niche blog but is widely read both nationwide and international. We have had articles on here with 500,000+ times being read… far more than any other Pitt-centric blog.

So, with all that we understand that we “Blatherites” truly represent a largely populated segment of the Pitt fan base and our thoughts and opinions are widely read by the public, others in the college football and basketball media outlets and by the principals in the football program and in the admin of the university…and, yes, I know this 1st hand. So we take pains to think twice before we write something so that it makes sense and draws others in as commenters (of which we have a ton.)

I think that is what the posters on here are talking about above when they responded to your approach with Emel. Understand that Emel’s leaving is not your fault but you did come on like gangbusters and posted some pretty negative stuff when no one on here knows you at all. Don’t take this the wrong way but it smacked of the negative stuff on the message board which most of us left long ago.

Stick around, chip in when you feel like it – you know your football stuff and that is what we like to have on here. Posters who read others opinions and respond with thought out and civil remarks are the ones we really pay attention to and use their opinions and knowledge to form our own comments presented back to them.

Welcome aboard.

Comment by Reed 01.18.16 @ 9:48 am

Interesting that there was nary a comment on our practice field partners loss yesterday. Pretty good results for a team that lost so many to injury. Tough break with the fumble.

Reed, how is the book coming? Thank’s for sharing your perspective to Bob. It is gratifying to know that we have such great readership. We need more contributors to the conversation. It is good to know that there is a larger fan base out there that have an interest in Pitt Sports. Also good to know that people on the inside are interested in what Pitt Fans think.

I think the most important thing is that we care, and although our opinions range from the most positive in Dr. Tom to the most negative in UPitt, we all want Pitt to win and it matters to us. For the most part we treat each other with respect and good humor, because we are all Pitt Fans.

We have all gone through some good times and way to many bad times. We are all hopeful that there are good times ahead.

Fitz was under the same draft guidelines as Boyd. In fact Larry was the precedent setter. He along with Maurice Clarett & Mike Williams of USC petitioned the NFL to be allowed to enter the draft after 2 years. Fitz was allowed because he went to prep school for a year & was therefore 3 years removed from high school. Clarett & Williams were denied because they were only 2 years out.

Comment by Nick 01.18.16 @ 11:00 am

New football article up now. Take our minds off individual posters for awhile.

Dr. Tom – the book is coming along well, I’m still in the research, outlining and reviewing chapter by chapter phase but I’m having fun with it. Very raw drafts at this point but starting to take shape. The crazed serial killer is a disgraced surgeon named “Dr. Thomas”… weird coincidence, huh?

My New Year’s resolution to go to the gym everyday is cutting into my allotted time for writing though… plus I’m trying to keep you guys somewhat in tune with FB still.

Comment by Reed 01.18.16 @ 11:17 am

IMHO, Fitzgerald was the greatest wide receiver Pitt has ever had, loved watching him, love watching him in the NFL.

I cheer for him as a “Pitt guy” in the NFL.

However, I don’t think his jersey should have been retired.

Getting your jersey retired, to me, means being hear a while too. 4 years and a degree, or with kids jumping to the NFL, at least 3.

I know, I know, where do you draw the line, if you say 3 years, why can’t you say 2 years.

I don’t know, just my thoughts, need to be at a place longer than 2 years to get your number retired.

Just my thoughts.

Comment by Dan 01.18.16 @ 11:18 am

Pitt still a 5 seed in Lunardi’s latest bracketology. Didn’t get to see the BC game Saturday (first one I’ve missed this year), but I’m glad the offense came around after the first 5 minutes which looked like (numbers wise on sports mobil app) another UL performance. I believe we now have had 6 different guys score 18+ in a game for us. Jeter, Robinson, Young, Artis, Wilson, Johnson (and smith has a 16 pt game).

Comment by ShorePitt 01.18.16 @ 11:19 am

Speaking of “Fitzgerald”……………

Went with my nieces husband (a former Duquesne wrestler) to the Fitzgerald Field House yesterday to watch #18 Pitt vs. #5 Oklahoma State wrestling match.

A little breakfast on the Southside, and ran up to the Field House.

We did not fare to well, but the guys were in most of the matches.

The Oklahoma’s and Iowa’s (including both “State” uni’s are on another level when it comes to wrestling.

Very enjoyable though. I was surprised, I would bet there was close to 1000 people at the match.

I thought we were gonna be there with 50 other people or something.

Anyway, nice day supporting the team.

Plus, I had bananas’s foster crepes for breakfast!!!

Comment by Dan 01.18.16 @ 11:24 am

Changing the subject, it is very noticeable that attendance is down at the Pete. This is really too bad because we have a team that is extremely entertaining.

My assumption is that a lot of people have given up their season tickets because of the last few years and especially last year’s performance. Because there are donations tied in with the best seats a lot of them are empty.

I also think that the change in conference has had an impact. We have not built up the hatred we had for UConn, Georgetown, Villanova etc.

Have not seen a packed house this year and may not, which is really a shame. Barnes has work to do.

Next year’s Football schedule will not fill many seats either with the exception of PSU.

Unfortunately Pittsburgh Fans only show up for great teams playing in big events.

Comment by gc 01.18.16 @ 11:25 am

gc – I agree. This is the most fun team to watch in a while. Last two years I would get really irritated with Jamie screaming at the players every second of the game because it is a lot more noticeable in person. This year I don’t notice it as much – because the team is running’ and gunning’ and more fun and I don’t notice him as much. I know several people that sat around me last year that said they were canceling for this year and I haven’t seen them. Too bad – a lot more fun this year.

Comment by htp123 01.18.16 @ 11:43 am

Jamie definitely not micromanaging as much this year. Probably because he has a very experienced team for the most part.

Comment by gc 01.18.16 @ 11:49 am

North Carolina State’s top scorer is Barber. He put 34 points on us last year. His best this year is 26 against Wake Forest. Given that Pitt seems unable to stop a high scorer, I am guessing he has 30+ . . . but Pitt wins by 7 or more.

Comment by Oakland Comet 01.18.16 @ 1:27 pm

Pitt dropped out of the AP poll to #26. But Indiana is 25 and they are due for a loss – though they do not have a decent opponent this week. We may have to wait a couple of weeks for some losses by those ranked 20 through 25.

Comment by Oakland Comet 01.18.16 @ 2:19 pm

It will be really hard to get back and stay in the top 25. I would say we will do well if we can win 4 of our next 7. Every game will be tough especially on the road. That is why tomorrow is a must win.

This is a totally new experience for Jamie and Pitt Fans. We have a team that will win with scoring and not defense. In our two losses we have seen what happens when we can’t score.

Scoring is a lot more difficult on the road, where we used to win with tough D, now we have to hit threes. Welcome to the ACC.

I want to see Odoba and Jeter blocking Barber’s shots when he gets past Robinson.

Their big men were a problem in the second game last year. I hope we have an answer.

Comment by gc 01.18.16 @ 2:42 pm

A little zone would be nice too

Comment by ShorePitt 01.18.16 @ 2:51 pm

Agree Shoeepitt,I don’t understand why Jamie doesn’t mix it up a bit.

Comment by gc 01.18.16 @ 3:09 pm

The NC State game is not an “easy win” but if Pitt can’t beat them, it is not a to 25 team (at this time) and not a 6 or better seed in the NCAA Tourney. I think Pitt is a top 20 to 30 team and so should win. NC State has lost 5 conference games in a row including a loss on the road at Wake Forest and a loss at home to Florida State. Let’s make it 6 in a row.

Comment by Oakland Comet 01.18.16 @ 4:45 pm

Although I will be there, I like to record the games to watch at home.
Is the NCSt game televised?
I can only find an ESPN3 listing.
