9:05 pm (or so) on ESPN. Karl Ravech and Seth Greenberg have the call.

One of the nice things about Jamie Dixon being at Pitt this long, is that he has actually relaxed and come close to being comfortable with the media. He’s never going to have the charm and ease of a Rick Pitino, John Calipari or Bruce Pearl; nor is he cantankerously amusing like a Jim Boeheim.

But he is more relaxed these days. He seems to have his tongue planted firmly in his cheek for half his responses to questions.

Last week, for example when asked about the team being more uptempo than in years past, he made the point that it has as much to do with the type of players on the team as it does the style with a simple quip: “You can only tell Aaron Gray to run faster so many times.”

This week, as the Louisville game loomed, Coach Dixon set the storyline for the media.

“The grad transfer championship,” Dixon said. “That’s the story.”

It’s a factor. Significant. Four starters on both teams, though, only Louisville features theirs as star players as opposed to cogs.

Pitt wanted Damion Lee when he decided to leave Drexel, but when Lee chose Louisville, Pitt quickly moved to Sterling Smith.

That’s been the difference this past year for Pitt with recruiting and bringing in players. Being prepared for other options. Forced to wait with other schools on Chieck Diallo, when he finally went to Kansas, Dixon was able to nab Maia and Nelson-Ododa (after another grad transfer center chose Illinois).

Pitt wasn’t able to wrest Detroit star guard Cassius Winston from Michigan State, but before the same weekend was out, they had moved quickly to get a commitment from Justice Kithcart — who has been having an outstanding senior season of high school.

Now, Pitt will play the best defensive team they have seen since Purdue.

Dixon said he expects the Cardinals to be one of the best defensive teams the Panthers have faced this season, and he’s interested to see how his team responds, especially on the road. Louisville has tweaked its defense a little compared to previous seasons because of personnel, but, for Pitt, the bottom line will be how it handles the press.

Louisville came off a 1-1 ACC road trip. Getting past the ever mercurial NC State Wolfpack, but falling to Clemson — which does not look nearly so bad after the Tigers took out Duke last night.

Louisville is much better offensively than they were last year; but while still very good defensively, they are not so stifiling. Last year in this game, Pitt struggled with their shooting and Louisville just started hitting everything.

Let’s see how tonight goes.

That was the worst game I have watched Pitt play in 20 years. I’m sick and if I puke, I’ll probably choke on it and die, so better just take a few days off from thinking Pitt hoops and try to recover.
F’ing shit the bed Pitt….or worse.

The refs are now checking into their hotel rooms. The complimentary prostitutes supplied by Rick Pitino had nothing to do with them loosing their whistles in the first half, then finding them again at halftime calling everything on Pitt until the game was out of reach then making a few “make up” calls to the buzzer.

Off topic – How did that scandal just go away??? Almost as bad as North Carolina not requiring kids to actually take classes in order to graduate. That just went away as well….

We were awful. I think the boys were frustrated by the mugging during the first half. This not the way we have seen the games called all year.

After being raped they never could get their heads back in the game.

Hopefully they learn something from it and move on.

Assuming we have awakened by then… Boston College may be in for a very rude host Saturday. I’m expecting us to come out like the Duquesne game an absolutely ruin them after tonight.

Every team has a bad night. Leave the kids alone… All u negative idiots were not out there playing so you don’t have any idea what it takes. They made careless mistakes tonight, so what.. They had a bad night. It happens!!! Leave the players alone!!! Show them support be loyal; that’s what they need not all this negativity.

Pit had to run 12 seconds of offense just to get into their offense. That left L vile only 10-14 seconds to defend our half court set.

For the life of me, I can never remember a Jamie team that could beat the press. Notre Dame killed us with it late in both halves. I think Carlow College new men’s team could press us and win.

Now Louisville showed everyone how to play Pitt defensively. I’m not saying the rest of the ACC has the same caliber of athletes Louisville has and can accomplish the same level of defensive play. But I am saying Pitt will be seeing a good deal more of the same style of D the rest of the season IMO. JR and Wilson right now are not effective against any press defensive. I’m not expecting for that to go away anytime soon.—After this game I would have to say that Pitt will have no trouble getting a post season bid from the NIT. An NCAA bid is not a guarantee at this point in time.

Louisville had always been Pitts bugaboo. No real news here. On to the next game.

1. as usual, Lville was much more athletic

2. as the Purdue game showed, we are helpless against a talented big man

Comment by wbb 01.15.16 @ 6:53 am

EXPOSED! On national TV nonetheless. The lack of a big man to go inside to finally caught up to us tonight. You can’t teach size. And give Pitino and Louisville credit. They played amazing defense and the pestering even, apparently, extended to our ability to make free throws. If we shoot them anywhere close to our normal 80% it at least isn’t an embarrassing loss. It’s going to be quite interesting to see how tight BC plays us this weekend. The road map was just handed to them….

One question that was answered last night about this team was how well can they handle a big man at center.

That tree that was planted under the basket last night named Chinanu Onuaku owned the paint at both ends of the court. Those couple muscled in close spin moves of his that ended in the grand finale double handed dunks pretty much answered that question punctuated with an exclamation point. We can’t handle the big man!

Let’s just accept the obvious without the embarrassment of offering excuses for Pitt’s horrendous performance, the Panthers were simply dominated by a bigger, stronger, better coached defensive focusd team that got into Pitt’s head early and frustrated them for the entire game.

Now we find out how well Dixon can coach come Saturday. Can he get these guys to forget last night and produce a win against BC at home? We match up much better with Boston College so lets just hope that the Panthers have a short memory and weren’t too damaged mentally by last night’s beatdown. The quicker we can forget about this one the better.

Bobby, good point but you have to have the personnel to defend Pitt the way Lville did .. and BC doesn’t.

Noneheless, we are bound to suffer in future game this year when we run into a talented big man. Our inability to defend at the 5 has plagued this team for the past 2 years … and even the year before when Zanna struggled against talented — the best example of that was our NCAA loss to UF where their center dominated.

Comment by wbb 01.15.16 @ 7:52 am

BTW, I’m not blaming Zanna just like I’m not blaming Young for last year …. they just were physically overmatched

Comment by wbb 01.15.16 @ 7:58 am

Louisville played tough, smart, inspiring defense. Pitt was rattled and rushed all night. Let’s look at the positives – Chris Jones and Ryan Luther both dunked.

Speaking of Jones, it looked like his elbow was hyperextended. Any word on that?

Comment by KeyboardKev 01.15.16 @ 8:19 am

We see who won the battle of the grad transfers. Those whores must make a difference.

Comment by alcofan 01.15.16 @ 8:24 am

Note that on Pitt’s two No. 1 seeded teams, they had big physical presence at the 5.

If everyone returns, Pitt could even be better next year but will still eventually fail if they can’t defend the 5 …. I’m not counting on Nix (hope I’m wrong.)

Comment by wbb 01.15.16 @ 8:27 am

Don’t jump guys. Louisville is big, strong, quick, athletic and they were at home. Dixon can’t break the press? You can’t put one ball handler in the game and expect to break a press every time. And JR is not quick and eventually gets tired. I think he should have started Wilson in the second half. When he was in, we were more able to handle the press. I think Wilson is going to be OK. And please let’s stop the Jamel Artis as point forward or Sheldon Jeter as an athletic freak NBA prospect. The game looked way too big for them last night. Neither can handle or defend against top talent. Well done Mike Young, who showed up. Regroup and win the ones we should like BC coming up. We won’t be the last team to lose to Louisville at their place.

Comment by Sam_in_215 01.15.16 @ 8:45 am

All of Pitt’s issues that we worried about before the season – weak at the 5, inability to to score or defend off the dribble, inconsistent outside shooting – were exposed last night. This team is better I think than most expected, but the same problems we saw last year are still there, just wallpapered over with marginal grad transfers.

Speaking of grad transfers, they might as well have not made the trip. Not a one of them was worth a lick last night. Outclassed.

No shame in losing on the road to Louisville, but that was an abhorrent performance. Very disappointing.

No signature wins yet – but plenty of opportunities to come.
