Peak Offensive Efficiency Over ND

Filed under: Basketball — Chas @ 1:46 pm

You knew it couldn’t be sustained. You knew ND would throw counter-punches. That it wouldn’t stay a blowout. But man, the ride was something and ultimately satisfying way to spend some time.

Here’s the thing about this game. This was not an up and down the court game. This was actually one of Pitt’s slowest games with only 65 possessions and adjusted Tempo for this game was 63 ($ wall), Pitt, per KenPom is about 68.0 in adjusted tempo (possessions/pace per 40 minutes). Notre Dame is an even slower tempo team than Pitt. And like Pitt, they operate at high efficiency on offense. This game was almost an absurdist example of offensive efficiency.

Pitt finished the game with an eFG% of 58.9% (28-56 shooting with 10-19 on 3FGs), but ND was even better at 61.9% (32-59, 9-20). Both teams played like they were among the top-5 most efficient offensive teams nationally.

The key was what has been a big thing for Pitt all year. Getting to the free throw line. ND had no answer inside and a team that doesn’t foul a lot, did. Mike Young and Sheldon Jeter spend large chunks in the second half at the FT line — and converting. The two combined to shoot 17-20 at the line (the rest of the Pitt squad was 3-4).

Pitt did what it has been doing for the last month. Getting out in transition when it can to get easy buckets — and when it can’t, setting things up for good shots.

Mike Young was unstoppable in the first half. The only thing that kept him from continuing that in the second half, was foul trouble. Young picked up a second foul with 1:22 left in the half. Jamie Dixon is usually so rigid about the 2 fouls in the first half gets you on the bench, it was a mild surprise he stayed in.

Given that Young had been a force on offense, however; coupled with the short time left in the half and that Young is an upperclassman, Dixon decided to trust the junior. That blew-up in their face in 17 seconds. Young picked up a third foul. It was a questionable call, but Young had to know not to put himself in that spot. Most of the time the complaints have been about Dixon being too rigid

That sent him to the bench for the start of the second half. And he ended up staying there for a large chunk, because Sheldon Jeter came out and did  what Young was doing to ND. Just having his way with them. It really speaks to both how good they are offensively — and how bad the ND interior defense is.

Rafael Maia was a steady presence inside for much of the game. Chris Jones has been a willing defensive player on the perimeter (not always great, but much greater intensity and aggressive), and has increased his versatility when given offensive touches. Same can be said for Sterling Smith, as the two have solidified the 2-guard spot.

As for James Robinson, he didn’t have a good shooting game, but I wasn’t bothered for a few reasons. A few of the shots were end of shotclock shots that he had to take regardless. He was really solid defensively on the perimeter. Demetrious Jackson disappeared for much of the second half because Robinson was switched on him defensively. Unfortunately that opened things up for Steve Vasturia in the second half — who Robinson hounded in the first half. Then there were the clutch free throws converted in the final five seconds to ice the game — taking that 2 point lead to 4 points to end the ND threat.

Robinson has always been a great free throw shooter — except in the final minutes of tight games. Not yesterday. Add in the layup he converted — again, just as ND got to within 2 points — at 1:30 left, and Robinson came up big on the offense when needed.

A really good win at a place Pitt has not had a lot of success in recent years.

Anyone see enough of WVU to want them in the second round as Lunardi has them in the link above?

Feels good to think tournament again this year. Good seed needed to make second weekend, not something I was realistically hoping for before the season…the next game and then early February will decide a lot.

please comment ye silent yinzers. even if you are a fan of sackseri. i will admit the kid was tough to have been sacked so many times and to still get up. please dont compare him to marino. thats down right sacrilegious.

ok, here’s the negative nancy in me. since purdue is looking now like a sort of decent loss, do we drop out of the top 25 with a loss to louiville??

stats are stats. Fact is that Brad Van Pelt actually broke a lot of Marino’s passing records.

A lot of us use stats to our advantage … which is the American way. But the fact is that if you are going to use stats to support your argument, you also have to accept facts for something you may not support.

it isn’t Brad (or Scott) .. it’s Alex

or 3rd round IF you count the “play-in”

Other 4 seeds are ISU, Iowa(revenge?), and the coolest match-up Arizona. Win that one and Upitt should be silenced FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!

I miss Frankcan…

All this comparison. Records in different eras of any sport are valid records for that time and they are just as valid as those today. When someone says “that was back then” but back then everyone played mostly by the same rules. A national champ in 1930 or 1990 is just as valid as one in 2015.

If you get Fox regional Carolinas ,PITT-ND rerun starts at 7:00pm followed by Louisville-Clemson at 9.

May also be on other fox regionals.

I am tired of Clemson-Alabama talk.

Emel – I got home and ate a nice meal cooked by my beautiful wife. I’m settling down and relaxing after a hard day at work by getting caught up on my reading. Your post at 5:25pm was a classic. I’m still laughing. Best comeback of this young year.

The Pitt Blather won’t be the same if you go silent.

Don’t forget to watch HCPN tonight on ESPN.

Pitt vs ND on Root in the Burgh as well. Probably less stressful this time.

While it is fun to watch the Nitters squirm as coaches run for the door, I wouldn’t expect a complete implosion. They’re talent is young and they have a lot of it. Maybe enough that even Franklin can’t completely F it up.

I hope UPitt took the under in this NC game, expecting a defensive tussle.

The announcers seem disappointed that Clemson tied the game.

Comment by Jackagain 01.11.16 @ 9:02 pm

And two long TDs as soon as I posted that. Exactly why I don’t bet.

Emel – one more thing if you truly have joined the “reader only” crowd, do the silent majority and myself a favor – be sure to cast your presidential vote in November. Every one counts –

Keep rooting for PITT – there are not enough of us, yet.

We’ll keep the light on the front porch for you too Emel.

Watched the Notre Dame game again last night – Still pretty nervous even though I knew the outcome. Pitt went 4 minutes without a field goal from about 6 minutes to 2 minutes to play. Thanks to JD slow down, Artis disappeared from the offense. Come on Jamie, let the boys play.
Our best defense is our offense – we can’t shut down a shooter like ND’s Jackson and against Purdue we couldn’t handle their big men. Time to just keep scoring.

Did anyone else get a new on-line football survey from Pitt. I completed mine in about 10 minutes. Again they are looking for feedback on how to make the pregame and game better events better.

Emel – that post wasn’t directed solely at you. I’ll shoulder some of that blame and we all know a few other posters who fit that bill also. I guess I was shocked to hear so many people say that because I have always felt that the back and forth on the Blather has been very civil.

Big disagreements yes, you and I have had many of those, but civil almost all of the time.

These ‘readers’ should go to Scout.com boards if they think we’re bad….

I’m very interested in seeing how Jamie attacks Louisville. He has the horses this year to outscore them. Once Pitt breaks the press there should be an opportunity for some quality shots, especially open threes. Will Jamie give them the green light?
