(This is the first article in a weekly series of articles entitled “Monday Morning Quarterback”. I will try to post them two days after the football games are played so as to have our wilder emotions under control by then. It will be my take on the positives and the negatives we saw happen and a chance for commenters to agree or disagree and to add their own thoughts.)
I told Chas I’ll try to keep the MMQB articles posted.
Four wins and one loss, with those wins including our first two ACC conference games is nothing to sneeze at and is a real ‘feel good’ generator for almost ever Pitt fan save a few disgruntled ones.
We held on, and that is becoming a mantra that isn’t real positive in itself, to win Saturday’s game against the University of Virginia at Heinz Field in beautiful Pittsburgh, PA.
Before getting into the game specifics let’s acknowledge something that is different with this season. There is a positive and growing sentiment among the Pitt football program, the university, the fans and, surprisingly, the local media, that sets this year, with this brand new staff, apart from the others seasons we have slogged through over the last five years.
What separates this year from all the other recent years is the solid belief that something good is not ‘about to happen’ but actually is. Yes there are areas of the team and coaching that have to grow and mature. I think we’ll all agree that even without Conner in the backfield our offense has to better come together and play more consistently.
Our defense is exciting and, for the most part very effective, but their good works seem to come in come in fits and starts also. We stack up very well nationally with our defensive statistics: 6th in rushing defense; 7th in total defense; 12th in passing efficiency defense; 27th in passing yards allowed and then we drop to 39th in scoring defense giving up 20.6 ppg.
Before anyone looks at that 39th tag for scoring consider this. Last season we gave up a 26.3 ppg and ended up 58th nationally.
POSITIVES:
Our defense is certainly the difference maker when it comes to winning games this season. For one thing we aren’t engaging in ‘shoot-out’ games this season like we had in 2014. Last year four of our seven losses had scores like this: 51-48 (Duke), 40-35 (NC), 56-28 (GT) and 35-34 (Houston). In future games if we score 48, 35, 28 and 35 points almost certainly our current defense will give us wins.
The offense is starting to show the ability to diversify, specifically our passing among the primary players in the receiving corps. Take a look at this table which lists how our QBs have distributed the ball to the Tight Ends this game, thus far in 2015 and through all of 2014:
Time Period |
Scott Orndoff |
J. P. Holtz |
Virginia Game | 2- 63, 31.5 ypc, 1 TD, long – 37 | 2- 26, 18.0 ypc, 0 TDs, long – 28 |
2015 after 5 games | 6-167, 27.8 ypc, 3 TDs, long -55 | 9-138, 15.3 ypc, 2 TDs, long – 28 |
2104 total after 5 games | 1-2, 6.0 ypc, 1 TD, long – 9 | 4-47, 9.5 ypc, 0 TDs, long – 17 |
Along with that, our WR opposite Boyd, Dontez Ford is starting to come into his own. Saturday he had 3 receptions for 63 yds which is a fine 21 ypc. So far this season he’s had 7 catches for 143 yards at a 20.4 ypc clip. Contrast that with our #2 WR of 2014 at the same point in the season, Manasseh Garner, who had 9 catches for 107 yards at an 11.8 ypc.
That is a result having a QB who is seeing and using the whole field and can hit his 2nd and 3rd progression receivers on a regular basis. If anyone is wondering where Tyler Boyd’s catches and yardage has gone this season all you have to do is look at what those other three receivers mentioned have done so far as opposed to last season:
5 games in | Orndoff | Holtz | Garner/Ford | Boyd |
2014 | 1-2-1 TD | 4-47 | 9-107 0-0 | 27-365-4 |
2015 | 6-167 | 9-138 | 0-0 7-143 | 33-328-2 |
(+) (-) | (+) 5 – 165 | (+) 5 – (+) 91 | (-)2 – (+) 36 | (+) 5 (-) 37 & 2 TD |
We also have to realize that Boyd was out for the opener so he’s played only four games this year vice five last. Looking at all that and factoring that missed game in, Boyd’s numbers are not all that different after five games. While we fans all want Tyler Boyd to get bigger numbers than last season to position himself for the NFL draft, it is a team game and this season’s passing game has spread the ball out well enough to put up better results with one more win under its belt…which is what really matters.
NEGATIVES:
We are still giving up big plays on defense. Against VA we allowed big gainers on rushing with a 72 yard run that led to their first three points. In the passing game we gave up two 32 yard plays, one for a TD and the other on a 4th & 23 conversion on Virginia’s last drive. The problem with this habit is that one or two big plays can completely negate a fine defensive showing and cause us to lose the game. Luckily that didn’t happen against Virginia, but in the 4th quarter when they completed that 4th & 23 down with a long pass you were worried… yes you were.
The offense gave up points to the opponent. Nate Peterman’s fumble deep in Virginia’s red zone was taken in for a TD which closed our 2nd quarter lead from a comfortable 17-3 to 17-10. Peterman has been very good about not throwing interceptions in his last three games (1) but his error had the same results as a Pick-6 in that it didn’t give us a chance to erase the turnover with stout defense.
But Peterman has been pretty stingy with the INTs over the last few games, save the 1st quarter of the Iowa game (From the Trib):
Peterman said he missed a few reads that could have resulted in bigger numbers on his stat sheet, but he passed for a career-high 222 yards with two touchdowns for the second time this season. He hasn’t thrown an interception since the first quarter of the Iowa game — a stretch of 65 attempts — and he is third in the ACC and 23rd in the nation in passing efficiency (152.0). Passing efficiency is determined through a formula that accounts for completion percentage, yardage, touchdowns and interceptions.
He has a way to go to match Voytik’s single INT over the last six games of last season though – that is a very good achievement.
As I did last week here is a running comparison of the two QBs as the seasons progressed. I’ll try to do this each game to see if the ‘Peterman Experience” has really taken hold in production. Oh, I’m wondering if anyone still think Peterman can’t run with the ball? Not on CV’s level but not too far below that either.
QB / Record | Quarters Played | Pass Stats | Comp % | Yds | TD | INT | YPA | YPC | Long | QB Rating |
Voytik 3-2 | 16 | 48-79 | 60.8 | 534 | 5 | 3 | 6.7 | 11.1 | 41 | 133.5 |
Peterman 4-1 | 16 | 60-90 | 66.7 | 760 | 6 | 3 | 8.4 | 12.7 | 42 | 152.9 |
Note: Scott Orndoff is fast enough and has good enough hands to play the Mike Shanahan role if needed at WR.
We stand at 4-1 now and that is something that Pitt football hasn’t done since 2009. Not a bad way to start the season, especially with a new staff and some new starters, at all. On to Georgia Tech in Atlanta next week.
Everybody’s tired of your schtick. And your statistics – oy vey! CV lost “it” over the winter. His two gratuitous plays per game destroys NP’s rhythm. He can’t run any more – see his last 3 attempts….zip, zilch, and Nada. It’s time for him to ride the pine, and concentrate on his coaching career. So, how ’bout doing us all a favor, and knock it off! We’ll call if we need him.
Yea I forgot I wasn’t suppose to post any more stats showing CV in good lite. My bad. Wasn’t going to until…..i was like reading Read’s ‘official’ stats. I’m like wtf. Something amiss here. 16 quarters don’t equal 5 games. Oh well, like I posted before, I actually passed advanced Math courses. Again my bad.
I’ll fall in line…I promise.
I think that parallels what wbb said, above. The DL has got to get penetration every snap.
All North Hill’s needs is another large sportsbar with sportsbar food.
Oh well, don’t think I’ll be going anytime soon.
Place did have good Turtle Soup and Frogs Legs.
Ribbet !
Do those QB rushing stats include sacks? Distorting stats again?
GT & Cuse are too soon and the team as it currently is set up should be able to win both without “the Beast”. But, this teams real meat of the schedule could use our other All-American back to show the way.
That would be five regular season games, one ACC championship game and a higher tier bowl game. That’s seven games to average 150 per game and collect 14 TD’s total. Guaranteed a high draft position.
Dreamin and sipping my Kool-aid – just got home from a great Homecoming weekend! Enjoyed a nice walk through the city yesterday afternoon and dinner at Ditka’s last night.
Wreck Tech!
HTP!
Nate is still going to lead this team to at least as many and probably 1-2 more wins than year than Chad would have.
Also saying Peterman is not too far off from chad his feet is the funniest joke in Pitt football since people thought not getting morelli was the biggest disaster EVAR. Peterman is slooooow. One nice run doesn’t change that. He’s not supposed to be running so it really is almost meaningless. But thats the kind of extremely ill-thought remark made to once again minimize Chad’s abilities that are silly and unnecessary. Peterman not too far off running from voytik. Made me grin a little thanks for that Reed.
They include any and all rushing attempts.
Sacks included.
I’m not the one distorting stats. Just posting them.
Now go crawl back under your rock !
Peterman lost control of the O after that play. We went no where from that point in the game with 10 minutes on the clock.
Better stick with Dentistry. 🙂
On to wreck GTech.
The hold by Bisno was a killer, not needed, then followed by a bad snap, and uncalled personal foul when the defender runs into a defenseless Peterman on his knees. Could have taken both knees out. Then a delay of game. Talk about unforced errors.
Vick is …shall we say….not very good. Didn’t realize he’s a career 56 % completion % which is terrible for NFL
(unless you’re an Indian (feathers not dots) )
Spurrier retired effective immediately from South Carolina,
Mark Dantonio, Michigan State head coach is an
alum of………c’mon one guess,
yep, South Carolina!!!!!!
If you think too hard, a Pitt fan could connect the easy dots and want to vomit on the spot!!!
That’s incredible.
On a positive note, at least we’ll get rid of Chubbs.
Hopefully CV won’t transfer, since he was f*cked around with bigtime.
Knows the personnel. From Burg area and is up & comer too !
Come back to UW, you’re alma mater.
Mark Dantonio attended the University of South Carolina and earned three letters as a defensive back for Coach Jim Carlen for the Gamecocks 1976-78.[6] He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from South Carolina in 1979.
Steelers O line a sieve, shows how valuable Ben’s ability to extend plays is.
At least that’s what I’ll tell myself until he leaves for SC.
Why would SC hire a failure like Charlie the Tuna ?
Bielema left Big 10 for SEC. It could happen.
So this isn’t the 1960’s when it was the Old South.
Half the people in Charlotte are from the North now.
I think Dantonio finishes his career at MSU.
I hope Dantonio finishes his career at MSU.
I want Dantonio to finish his career at MSU.
No helmet laws for motorcycles.
“The university has certainly made a commitment to provide all of the necessary tools to continue to build and sustain a championship-caliber program, and I’ve made a long-term commitment to be the head coach at Michigan State,” Dantonio said in a prepared statement. “This new contract expresses the loyalty that I have to our current student-athletes and their families and sends a clear message to current and future recruits that I will be their head coach at Michigan State. It also lets Spartan Nation know that I deeply appreciate their loyal support and that I’m here for the long haul.”

these guys words and promises are about as good as politicians.
Steeler Nation on full display. That was like a Home Game.
Minutes! LOL!
LETS GO PITT…..er, I mean LETS GO CHAD!!!!
It’s been his dream to coach in the $EC.
Besides, it’s USC (without the cool ocean breezes).
—Even though we are 4 and 1, we need to keep in mind that we have flaws — and they are many. Good things are coming but we are bound to have some stumbles along the way. Just sayin’.
—Several nice throws by NP. Liked the crossing routes that Orndoff and TB ran, which were pretty much like a legal “pick” play. Would like to see more shallow crossing routes too.
—When it’s 3rd and 4 or so, why aren’t we throwing short passes DOWN the field to the TEs instead of those maddening 20-yard ACROSS the field passes which gain 2 yards… Coach Chaney should go and watch Heath Miller’s routes during Steeler practice…
Go Pitt.
PS: Is anyone else kind of shocked when you hear after the games that Jordan Whitehead had 10 or 12 tackles? He seems to be doing this kind of quietly. He now has 41 tackles over 5 games, where MLB Galambos is second on the team at 31 tackles. Pretty amazing stats for a true frosh. And a lot better than sitting the bench somewhere else. 🙂
Go Pitt.
He is a player for sure!
I look for him to be the difference maker on D this week for which George Tech has no Option.
