This column will be shorter than usual as I’ve been under the weather all week. I’m also quite busy at work so that’s eating up a lot of my weakened energy. So, please forgive more typos and errors than usual. Long story short, Pitt is a better team than Virginia at almost every facet. Chaney’s offense is still a work in progress without James Conner, but I’m willing to give him a mulligan on last week. This week, however, the offense needs to produce and get things going as this defense is not good enough to win on its own against the likes of Georgia Tech and UNC like it did against VT.
The Cavaliers opened up the season with back to back games against highly ranked out of conference opponents (UCLA and Notre Dame). The Notre Dame game was a respectable loss, with the Fighting Irish needing last second heroics to pull off the win but UCLA was never really a contest. Since then, they struggled to beat FCS foe William & Mary and got whooped by Boise State. I respect UVA for the tough out of conference schedule, but in order to build the program you need actual wins, not moral victories.
Offense:
The Hokies offense flows through RB Taquan Mizzell. When all else fails, he’s their weapon. Mizzell is only two receptions and seven yards away from leading the Cavaliers in rushing yards, receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. He’s more of a WR playing RB as he doesn’t show much instinct behind the line of scrimmage. As a runner he’s had 46 carries for 157 yards (a 3.4 ypc average) but he’s the best they have because he has the skill to make plays in space.
Matt Johns returns at QB and unfortunately for him, he’s not very mobile. He has some athletic ability, but nothing compared to Brendan Motley of VT and we saw how little that helped him against Pitt’s pass rush. Johns has improved since last season and that shows up on the stat sheet with a higher completion percentage and yards per attempt. While Mizzell’s ability to get yards out of the backfield has helped, the emergence of senior WR Canaan Severin has been vital. Severin had 11 catches for 153 yards against Notre Dame, so he’s a threat Pitt must take seriously in the secondary.
The OL for UVA has been what you’d expect. They struggle to get push in the run game and pass protection has been good not great. They’ve given up seven sacks in four games, the same as VT had prior to the Pitt game.
One thing that’s comforting is that UVA has required luck and trickery to get points. Against Notre Dame, one long touchdown was a trick play. Against Boise, both touchdowns were long plays directly caused by the defense playing lazy plus some blatant luck. Take away the Notre Dame game and the offense has been garbage the other three games.
Overall, stopping UVA will be simple: execute. Other than two or three plays against VT, the defense executed consistently. UVA does not have the talent on offense that VT had, so mistakes will be easier to cover up as well. Worst case scenario is UVA gets some big plays through the air and trickery and forces Pitt’s offense to keep up. Best case is a result similar to last week against an inferior offense.
Defense:
UVA runs an aggressive 4-3 defense that leaves them susceptible to giving up big plays. I expect nothing different against Pitt as the offense has shown tendencies to make mistakes (which is probably why Pitt was uber conservative in the second half of the VT game). Take this play against William & Mary where UVA sent six on a blitz and had three deep DBs to protect the long ball and STILL lost a 1 on 1 battle.
I can’t tell if it’s scheme or athletic ability, but UVA players seem a few steps behind on defense consistently. A lot of times in the passing game guys were open with noticeable space between him and the UVA defender. I don’t know if they’re too aggressive or just slow, TV angles don’t always give the best view. Either way, Boyd is going to find open space easy to find.
One player to watch for is LB Micah Kiser. The sophomore has 4.5 sacks on the season, an impressive number for a MLB. Kiser also leads the Cavaliers in tackles with 39. CB Maurice Canady is tall (6’2”), led the team in interceptions last year, and has some NFL potential, but I’m not sure I see it on tape. Late against Notre Dame, Canady nearly grabbed a game-winning pick and then later on that drive got burnt by Will Fuller for the game-losing score. Not good.
Overall, the defense is too prone to giving up big plays. There’s some talent, but I think the scheme is too aggressive for the players they have. The big concern is that Pitt falls prey to the aggressive defense and makes mistakes. I’d expect to see more quick plays from Pitt in the form of screens, hitches, and slants. That’s one thing to help counter the OL’s inconsistent pass blocking. Worst case scenario the offense turns the ball over and can’t get moving, putting the defense in bad spots. Best case the running game gets going and the offense does whatever it pleases.
Prediction:
Narduzzi’s energetic coaching style should help Pitt avoid a letdown. All this team needs to do is play smart football and execute the simple stuff. Pitt is better than UVA, especially on defense, and has the talent on offense to score more than enough.
Pitt wins handily 31-13.
I’ll be very happy with just a win. You know,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Just win baby, WIN!
BTW, your Chivas Regal is in the mail.
Hail to Pitt!
I can’t even believe I’m saying this but I’m confident. I think the team will be ready because they haven’t played at home in over a month. Pitt covers and heads to Hotlanta 4-1.
As far as I know, I have no Bobby Vinton connection.
And let’s not forget Joe Negri!
Pitt wins, but it’s tight.
Based on espn spread. I see Pitt winning 28-7. Go Pitt!
Remember don’t kid yourself college football is a business.
I like ND because he understands this and is first loyal to himself and consequently loyal to the school and alumni.
If we had him last year Peterman would be 2 QB, Whitick starting QB, and Chad replacing Trey.
Ask Saban and the SEC how it’s done.
My guess is Foster’s family has a job now in Alabama but his skills may be wasted as Saban brings in at least 5 five star receivers a year.
Boyd and Foster; Maybe ND could have pointed out reality to Foster and we would have Boyd and Foster.
Thanks BA – we are truly greatful for your help in ridding Pitt of Steve “Smug” Peterson.
Paul currently makes $2.3 million with a max bonus of $440k. I’m not sure there are any bonus payouts for his present efforts, or lack thereof. Paul does have the 23rd ranked 2016 recruiting class – ikr.
Hammer the Hoos!
– twice now in a 10 year span, Nebraska has fired a coach who had been averaging 9 wins per year – and once again, the replacement seems to be inferior (although in fairness, it is too easy to tell)
– Edsall, who is about to be fired at Maryland, replaced an alum HC after a 9 win season
– Al Golden at Miami seems to be the next on the chopping block (even though his 2 predecessors fared no better)
– Mark Reicht at Georgia has had many double digit win seasons but he could be joining Golden
– will Wisc be satisfied with 9 wins per season as it seems that is where they could be headed, even though they don’t play Mich, MSU or OSU?
Yet at Pitt, it seems that until the new chancellor came aboard, everyone was accepting of the status quo since DW was fired. Most of us here were actually disappointed when PC left last year, probably because it meant just another freakin coaching change … even with the DC he had hired.
Many of us here (not named Tossing Thabeets) were hoping for the better but was expecting another 6-6 or 7-5 at best. Our expectations have been lowered that much.
HCPN, with his Youngstown roots, may be just what the doctored ordered …. and finally provide some success coupled with stability. I just hope that area Pitt fans come out in droves to support the new regime because we have to get over this hump.
Then at the camps this past summer, he did very well in the passing categories .. and is doing pretty well this season (despite sitting out two games with an injury) against really good competition that Moeller plays against.
He is my favorite for replacing Peterman or Voytik in 2017.
First VaTech… tomorrow UVA… Is there anybody else left to beat in the Commonwealth of Virginia?
Narduzzi said freshman receiver Quadree Henderson, who hasn’t played since the opener, is experiencing “family issues” that Narduzzi declined to discuss. “He’s been a strong kid,” Narduzzi said. “He’s working through that.” Henderson is in school and practicing with the team. ..
Now onto figuring out who are these current Hoos? I watched an interview with Mike London this week and although he talked all the right coach speak about standing up to the early season trials that his team has faced, you could sense that his heart just isn’t in it. This guy is a dead man walking.
This mentality will permeate the performance of the Cavaleirs tomorrow if the Panthers come out of the tunnel breathing fire. The mind leads, the body follows. These two teams are going in opposite directions.
After yet another heartbreaking Pitt loss at the hands of the Hawkeyes, this team was at a crossroads. How they responded against VT to win that game at the end spoke volumes about the mindset of Narduzzi’s squad. They are buying in. This game will confirm my impression that this team has dedicated aspirations to make a real impact on the ACC Coastal race this season.
Dan 72 came out eariler with a real lopsided prediction in Pitt’s favor. I kind of laughed that off, but on second thought, he may be on to something. My thoughts, if Pitt comes out strong early and the momentum in this one gets rolling early in Pitt’s favor, I see the Cavs folding like a cheap tent andca Pitt rout! These Panthers have something to prove. There are still a ton of doubters out there just waiting for a SOP performance to appear. This would be an appropriate game for such a letdown to occur. WON’T HAPPEN.
Narduzzi gets these guys to play in a breakout game at Homecoming. The Peterman Boyd connection results in a couple long ball scores and Pitt wins this one going away.
Big Pitt win 38-14.
It is frustrating not knowing much about injuries, but equally frustrating I’m sure to our opponents when they don’t know who to prepare for.
Just win, as our good Doc said yesterday.
HTP!
It’s something he’s been itchin’ to do since handing the reins to Peterman.
Believe tomorrow could be the day!
Pitt 27 Virginia 10
UVA may not have a good defense, but I’m not convinced yet. They’ve played a very tough OC schedule. I’ve always believed that good competition makes you better. If UVA’s front 4 can contain our running game, then NP may have another so-so aerial display. But even at that, I think that will be good enough to get the W.
Pitt wins 27-14 on a dry field. They won’t score much on our D. Hope I’m wrong, and you guys and your blowouts are right!
H2PN! Visualize 4-1
