This weekend may get a little more boring for Pitt fans — assuming you don’t live on the East Coast, especially Virginia.
Hurricane Joaquin continues to strengthen northeast of the Bahamas. As of 8 p.m. Joaquin has sustained winds of 105 mph, making it a Category 2 hurricane. It continues to move southwest at 7 mph.
Gov. McAuliffe declared a state of emergency for Virginia Wednesday afternoon, followed by the City of Norfolk also declaring a state of emergency.
Hurricane Joaquin will likely drift west over the next few days before being picked up by a cold front. At the same time, a developing coastal low will try to strengthen over the area this weekend.
The latest track strengthens the storm into a major hurricane, a category 3 storm. The center of the storm in this latest update would make landfall somewhere along the Outer Banks Sunday afternoon.
Joaquin is just one part of a complex weather pattern that is setting up for the end of the week.
If the state of emergency lasts into the weekend the Pit-VT game in Blacksburg is assuredly cancelled.
This creates a real issue for the ACC. Pitt has already had it’s bye week. It is slated to play 8 straight weeks. There is no open date for Pitt.
There have been instances of non-con games not being made up, but I can’t recall an instance in recent years where a conference game has not been played or made up at some point.
The ACC may be forced to schedule the game on a Monday or some other awkward day if the game is postponed this Saturday.
Can’t control the weather – this will be tough to reschedule.
Looks like we are really going to miss Conner again this weekend.
Maybe he will be back if we play this one in December.
Interesting puzzle to solve if this game gets rained out.
The West Point Cemetary has graves of many notables (Pershing, Westmoreland, Schwartskopf, Patton, MacArthur, Custer — yes, Custer) but one grave was specificcally mentioned by the tour guide … Maggie Dixon. Apparently, in her only year at WP, she made a major impact and I believe it was the only time Army won the Patriot League title,
I would assume the Air Force Academy in Colorado would also be a great environment.
And of course, there are many more notables buried there.
Take the brother QB to run in the monsoon for 100+ and the under. LOL
Vtech would still be the home team, but playing in an away stadium. The vtech season ticketholders could gain entry into Pitt Stadium through the presentation of a ticket, etc. the vendors would be on short notice, but that could actually make for a better fan experience. Pitt students and the public could fill any remaining seats. That would be crazy. that is why they should do it. Backup plans work. Look at our qb situation for instance.
Makes our schedule a little easier up front if they cancel the game. would help recruiting if we are 2-1 after this weekend and then go 4-0 as GT is very beatable…i think!
There is no way the state should allow thousands of people to be in the same vicinity and on the same roads with that happening.
I rather enjoyed the rivalry with VT during Big East days. To be a rivalry IMO you have to play every year and Ped State wont, as an oldtimer I let that go, I could care less about playing pedophile protectors who look down their noses at us. The way our OL and RBs are maybe rain for 40 days and nights would be good.
wbb- nice post about West Point – will be rooting for them to beat Frankinliars 5 stars this week.
Exactly – It’s not like this is only impacting the Pitt/Tech game… How many games are along the coast this weekend?
NC State, Navy, Duke, Wake, Ga Tech, Georgia, Clemson, and Maryland all play home games Saturday…
mc brings up some solid points on other schedules. Going forward, my guess is that the ACC Commish leaves a free weekend at the end to cover for this type of situation happening in the future or schedules the bye week for everyone in week 6.
Now that doesn’t mean that the ACC might not issue a strong disclosure to the risks involved of attending such games that may be impacted by the prevailing non-hurricane weather, that could be bad enough weather in itself but not severe enough to get the ACC to call games IMO, we’ll know for sure in a couple days.
My prediction,Jauquin goes east staying out to sea until maybe impacting the New England coast on Sunday through Tuesday time frame.
Football fields, and athletic facilities in general, are designed to handle rain and drain well.. But still, that’s just an incredible amount of water.
