A Second Bye?

This weekend may get a little more boring for Pitt fans — assuming you don’t live on the East Coast, especially Virginia.

Hurricane Joaquin continues to strengthen northeast of the Bahamas. As of 8 p.m. Joaquin has sustained winds of 105 mph, making it a Category 2 hurricane. It continues to move southwest at 7 mph.

Gov. McAuliffe declared a state of emergency for Virginia Wednesday afternoon, followed by the City of Norfolk also declaring a state of emergency.

Hurricane Joaquin will likely drift west over the next few days before being picked up by a cold front. At the same time, a developing coastal low will try to strengthen over the area this weekend.

The latest track strengthens the storm into a major hurricane, a category 3 storm. The center of the storm in this latest update would make landfall somewhere along the Outer Banks Sunday afternoon.

Joaquin is just one part of a complex weather pattern that is setting up for the end of the week.

If the state of emergency lasts into the weekend the Pit-VT game in Blacksburg is assuredly cancelled.

This creates a real issue for the ACC. Pitt has already had it’s bye week. It is slated to play 8 straight weeks. There is no open date for Pitt.

There have been instances of non-con games not being made up, but I can’t recall an instance in recent years where a conference game has not been played or made up at some point.

The ACC may be forced to schedule the game on a Monday or some other awkward day if the game is postponed this Saturday.

I live down here along the Outer Banks.. For the sake of PITT FB let’s pray this Hurricane goes away … and take Jim Cantore with you !!!

I live in Northern VA – it’s going to be a fun weekend. To be honest, a postponed game may be good for Pitt, especially if played at an odd time. Tech’s crowds are ferocious. Anything to take the 12th man out of it is a good thing.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 09.30.15 @ 9:29 pm

With the current weather forecast TT, the crowd will be light on Saturday for the noon start. Any later start and they wouldn’t play anyways.

Can’t control the weather – this will be tough to reschedule.

Better be practicing power running.

Looks like we are really going to miss Conner again this weekend.

Maybe he will be back if we play this one in December.

Comment by gc 09.30.15 @ 10:14 pm

With the ACC championship game on December 5th and both Pitt & VT’s regular seasons ending the week before, do you think the ACC would bump the game back a week to December 12th if either of these two teams are in contention for the Coastal title?

Interesting puzzle to solve if this game gets rained out.

Comment by Erie Express 10.01.15 @ 5:08 am

I was planning to go to Blacksburg for this game but made the mistake of waiting until March this year to book a hotel room. The closest I could find was over an hour away, probably driving on some remote country road, so decided not to go. It appears that this was fortunate for me.

BTW, I instead took a ride up to the Hudson River Valley this past (long) weekend, and toured West Point on Friday. Needless to say … very inspiring. I remember Beano saying that the best setting in college FB was at Michie Stadium, overlooking the Hudson River with the large hills in the background .. very hard to argue.

The West Point Cemetary has graves of many notables (Pershing, Westmoreland, Schwartskopf, Patton, MacArthur, Custer — yes, Custer) but one grave was specificcally mentioned by the tour guide … Maggie Dixon. Apparently, in her only year at WP, she made a major impact and I believe it was the only time Army won the Patriot League title,

ebb.. That was an inspiring read! I too have heard what a wonderful scenic place West Point is to visit and to attend the football game.

Comment by BigB 10.01.15 @ 6:58 am

I also toured (self tour) the Naval Academy about a decade ago. It was another great setting, right on the Chesapeake Bay. And IMO Annapolis is one great small town.

I would assume the Air Force Academy in Colorado would also be a great environment.

Comment by wbb 10.01.15 @ 7:05 am

I need to correct the above listing of notables interred at WP. I meant Cushing instead of Pershing, and MacArthur has a plaque and nameplate at the main chapel there, but is not buries there.

And of course, there are many more notables buried there.

I’m about 25 miles north of Blacksburg. It has been raining off/on all week. Heavy rains come in Thursday night. The streams/rivers are already swollen. I don’t want to predict what will happen by Saturday, but I am glad I’m above the 100 year flood zone in the river valley I live in.

Take the brother QB to run in the monsoon for 100+ and the under. LOL

Comment by JohnRamella 10.01.15 @ 7:15 am

So let’s have some fun with this. If we had an on campus stadium, we could host the game on Saturday. Same team preparations but with a bit more work getting vtech rooms and such.

Vtech would still be the home team, but playing in an away stadium. The vtech season ticketholders could gain entry into Pitt Stadium through the presentation of a ticket, etc. the vendors would be on short notice, but that could actually make for a better fan experience. Pitt students and the public could fill any remaining seats. That would be crazy. that is why they should do it. Backup plans work. Look at our qb situation for instance.

Makes our schedule a little easier up front if they cancel the game. would help recruiting if we are 2-1 after this weekend and then go 4-0 as GT is very beatable…i think!

I also live in Northern VA and am heading South at noon today. Game or no game it will be great catching up with my friends. The wife and kids can ride out the hurricane w/o me. They will probably like it better that way.

Latest weather update: Flash flood warning from 8:00 am Friday morning until 8:00 pm Saturday night.

There is no way the state should allow thousands of people to be in the same vicinity and on the same roads with that happening.

Comment by Reed 10.01.15 @ 7:55 am

dhuff -brilliant, our Steeler Stadium is also free as they play tonight. Get on it professor – VT stays at Sheraton going to game on Just Ducky Tours or Good Ship Lollipop or stay at Section 8 highrise in the Rocks where with road closures it will be a short two hour bus drive for VT to get to the game; free blue rain ponchos (yellow would look like more empty seats). We held the game during Hurrican Ivan. Get your class on it.

I rather enjoyed the rivalry with VT during Big East days. To be a rivalry IMO you have to play every year and Ped State wont, as an oldtimer I let that go, I could care less about playing pedophile protectors who look down their noses at us. The way our OL and RBs are maybe rain for 40 days and nights would be good.
wbb- nice post about West Point – will be rooting for them to beat Frankinliars 5 stars this week.

Comment by rkb 10.01.15 @ 8:05 am

NOt even our Lt. Commander-in-Chief can save this situation.

Comment by rkb 10.01.15 @ 8:16 am

I wonder what the weather is going to be like along tobacco road because NC St, Duke and WF, are all playing at home this week. Clemson and GT are too. Could be a total wash out for the ACC.

Comment by mc 10.01.15 @ 8:35 am

dhuff, we’ll see if the Clemson-ND game is moved to South Bend

Comment by wbb 10.01.15 @ 8:46 am

@Comment by mc 10.01.15 @ 8:35 am

Exactly – It’s not like this is only impacting the Pitt/Tech game… How many games are along the coast this weekend?

NC State, Navy, Duke, Wake, Ga Tech, Georgia, Clemson, and Maryland all play home games Saturday…

Comment by BostonsCommon 10.01.15 @ 9:18 am

hahaha, now that would be a good one wbb. Difference is that they are a national broadcast, so that is a bit more difficult logistically. Sad to say, but our opponent and our team is not held in such high regard. A large national media contingent will probably not be attending our game, hence an easier transition.

mc brings up some solid points on other schedules. Going forward, my guess is that the ACC Commish leaves a free weekend at the end to cover for this type of situation happening in the future or schedules the bye week for everyone in week 6.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 10.01.15 @ 9:18 am

If it impacts most or a lot of the ACC games, then I would imagine that moving the ACC Championship game would not be as big of a deal.

Comment by Dan 10.01.15 @ 9:29 am

Move the game to Pitt, I mean Hienz stadium. Split the gate w VT. Game gets played.

Comment by Pitt it Is 10.01.15 @ 10:44 am

I imagine the ACC has a contingency plan in place in the event that many games are impacted. I’m sure they’re waiting until tomorrow afternoon/evening to make the call. I bet it doesn’t bring much more than heavy rain and all the games are played.

Comment by johnnygossamer 10.01.15 @ 10:53 am

I remember going to Raleigh to watch East Carolina play Miami after hurricane Irene as Greenville North Carolina was really damaged. The Pirates could not play at their home field…They upset the Miami hurricanes… Tore up the stadium and the goalposts – There are a lot like Hoopies in that respect, In fact I have been to a couple of West Virginia East Carolina games… The Super Bowl of drunks.… They won’t be invited back to Carter Finley Stadium

Comment by BigB 10.01.15 @ 11:33 am

Mistake in the above dictation hurricane Floyd not hurricane Irene severely damage North Carolina

Comment by BigB 10.01.15 @ 11:35 am

Michigan @ Maryland moved from 8:00 pm to a noon kickoff

Comment by BostonsCommon 10.01.15 @ 11:41 am

Here’s the thing. The ramifications of game cancellations would have a strong ripple effect on multiple fronts other than just creating an ACC scheduling nightmare to get those cancelled games in. Ticket refunds, loss of local economy revenue on game day, TV contracts, etc. Therefore unless Hurricane Joaquin bears down on the Eastern seaboard of the US over the next 24 to 36 hrs the powers to be in the ACC just won’t have the balls to take such decisive definitive action of multiple game cancellations. They just won’t want to take all of that resulting heat from the many factions impacted.

Now that doesn’t mean that the ACC might not issue a strong disclosure to the risks involved of attending such games that may be impacted by the prevailing non-hurricane weather, that could be bad enough weather in itself but not severe enough to get the ACC to call games IMO, we’ll know for sure in a couple days.

My prediction,Jauquin goes east staying out to sea until maybe impacting the New England coast on Sunday through Tuesday time frame.

Comment by Dr. Tom 10.01.15 @ 11:43 am

Some places in Virginia, including Blacksburg have received nearly 7 inches of rain in the last week. Drop another 3-5 inches on top of that with hurricane force winds and you can see why it’s a dicey situation.

Comment by BostonsCommon 10.01.15 @ 11:54 am

I think they play… Although I wouldn’t want to be driving along any creeks or over any bridges to get to the game.

Football fields, and athletic facilities in general, are designed to handle rain and drain well.. But still, that’s just an incredible amount of water.

Comment by BostonsCommon 10.01.15 @ 11:56 am

Are old college fields like Lane Stadium designed for it? I know most/all professional football and baseball parks are certainly prepared for it.

Comment by johnnygossamer 10.01.15 @ 12:25 pm

Tomlin is paid to be a HC??? Terrible decisions. Like usual.
