Here are some links and such.
The Trib’s article on Peterman:
At the outset of his Pitt career, Nathan Peterman faced the daunting task of wrestling the starting job from an incumbent quarterback who has the support of his teammates. It took him no longer than one training camp and the first two weeks of the season to get it done.
Then, in his first start, he encountered a large, hostile crowd in Iowa and was asked to save the game by driving the offense 75 yards to a game-tying touchdown. With 52 seconds to spare — too much time, as it turned out — he did it.
“He definitely shows poise in the moment,” tight end J.P. Holtz said. “He doesn’t get scared.”
Here is something we discussed in the last comments thread but I find interesting; Narduzzi’s honesty:
The interior offensive line needs to be quicker off the ball and more physical, he said. He even named right guard Alex Officer by name. He pointed out how center Artie Rowell can improve — while introducing him during a live broadcast of his radio show.
You think Tyler Boyd was immune? Wrong. Boyd deserves to get the ball, Narduzzi said, but if he wants to be a great NFL receiver, he needs to improve his run blocking.
Quarterback Nate Peterman missed a wide-open Boyd in the end zone the play before throwing an interception against Iowa. But he played a “very, very solid game,” and “spearheaded” the offensive attack. Chad Voytik is the team’s fierest competitor, but he’s still going to the bench in favor of Peterman.
Here is the weekly Sam Werner Pitt Chat transcript for this week, and a question addresses some commenter’s’ favorite subject:
BrotherMouzone: Would you say that Chad Voytik has been treated a bit unfairly during the quarterback competition?
Sam Werner: That’s tough to say. I wouldn’t necessarily say “unfairly,” but it does seem like Peterman seems to have a longer leash when he’s been in the game this season. Now, part of that might be because he has earned it, having shown that he can move the ball down the field effectively through the air.
Voytik certainly hasn’t looked great in his limited action this season, but he also hasn’t really had an opportunity to get into much of a rhythm either. He’ll likely need to show what he can do in more limited opportunities if he wants to get back on the field moving forward.
And…
Andy: How long until Wirginis replaces Galambos as the starter? Wirginis is younger, and he already looks like the better linebacker.
Sam Werner: I wouldn’t hold your breath. While Wiriginis has some exciting potential, I think the staff really likes what Galambos brings from the mental side of the game.
Here is Werner’s daily article this one also on Peterman’s ascendancy and some Jordan Whitehead stuff:
Whitehead had 16 tackles, including seven solo stops, against the Hawkeyes. It was the most tackles in one game by any Pitt player this season, and the first time a Panthers player had 15 tackles since midway through last season. After the game, I didn’t realize it,” he said. “I was just focused on the loss. I didn’t really worry about my stats, but I got a couple of texts, saw it on the Internet.”
Just three games into his collegiate career, Whitehead said he already feels like he belongs. Even though there’s still some room to grow. I feel like I’m caught up,” he said. “Coaches are still on me, players still trying to hold me to it to make sure I do everything right. I feel like I fit in more.”
Here is a nice article from the University’s own Pitt News in regards to Narduzzi’s hire and his ‘bringing the swagger to Pitt‘ although I may disagree with this part of the piece:
The defense as a whole has made impressive strides each game. At times in week one against Youngstown State, the unit looked confused and gave up a handful of big plays. In week two, the Panthers held Akron to seven points, but you could attribute that to the grimy weather that turned InfoCision Stadium in Akron into an Amazonian swamp.
Against a good offense in a major conference, the defense thrived. It was the most impressive Pitt performance of the season — even more than Qadree Ollison’s 217 yards on the ground in week one — and it’s because it stemmed from players playing confidently in the right position. This is a direct result of coaching.
I am getting excited about the defense also but we didn’t really do all that well against Iowa last week when we gave up 27 points, 258 yards passing, 105 yards rushing and 22 first downs. Perhaps the more disappointing aspect of our defensive game was that Iowa scored on three TD drives of 81, 74 and 80 yards… then took the ball with 0:52 seconds on the clock and moved 31 yards for the winning FG.
Let’s not get overly excited about our defense until we play a lot better than that.
Keep the script. Get creative with the uniforms. No baby shit mustard gold. Wear something cool like Oregon or Purdue’s new uniforms.
Out-house vs No-name
FWIW – on the 2-deep last Thursday, QO was listed as the starter, Chris James the back-up and FR Hall as third. I’m not sure what is going on there, but hopefully all are healthy and we see three strong backs against the Chokies.
Jaymar Parrish is still buried as the third TE.
On D, Price and Blair are 1st string at DE – all 250 & 240 lbs. the VT tackles will have 110 lbs combined on our light DE’s. I wonder where the pressure comes from this week? I’m guessing Freeze, Bam and J.Whitehead.
L.Pitts and T.Webb are the 1st stringers at CB and S, with Motley and Mitchell as back-ups.
Winslow and Blewitt remain the P & K.
The VT game will be our D’s first of many real Dual Treat QB’s they have to face. Does that mean Chad is now running with the practice squad?
HTP!
Seems that us Pitt fans don’t have an exclusive lock on disappointing losses. And I’m not even going to delve into that ASU a$$ whooping. Then there is my good friend who graduated from Maryland. I can’t put into print his spontaneous opinions of the Terrapins current situation.
GT all of a sudden is a cellar dweller in the ACC Coastal Division. Pitt has the opportunity to make an impact in the Division with a win on Saturday. H2p!
The Iowa D gave up 16 offensive points and should continue to be ranked in the top 10 in the country in most categories, even though they only played one P5 team so far.
Iowa plays Wisconsin Paulie next week. Both teams were in the top ten rankings for weakest schedule among P5 schools along with Pedo State.
A win vs VT would really help our chances, but I am not holding my breath. Sorry Dr. Tom, not feeling very positive.
Just two years ago Upitt had nothing but high praise for Malzohn at Auburn. Now, they are a loss away from complete free fall.
Mac teams (Toledo over La. Lafayette, Akron over Arkansas State) beat the best two teams in the Sun Belt Conference. The MAC is not the worse conference in FBS football.
This season, there is no dominating team in college football. Maybe Ohio State but they are not beating up their opponents.
I’ll play the name game with USC anytime.
Position for position all-time greats.
Didn’t see USC ahead of Pitt in the Football Writers 75th anniversary All-American Team.
In fact Pitt had 5 players, to USC’s 3.
It’s bad enough we get short-changed with the national and local media.
Does it have to be with alumni too ?
exactly right !!
It would be akin to a child of a royal bloodline, saying ‘no thanks’ to being King, I’ll be the janitor of the castle instead.
What is wrong with these people !!!
People under 30 call them awesome. I am not under 30 by the way.
I never said Pitt doesn’t have history. I said the football tradition can’t be considered equal to USC.
For that mater, Pitt had a very brief run in their long history with the mustard uniforms. They have probably worn the navy and gold almost as long.
Padding the B1G schedules seems to get them favor in the polls.
I actually like the Ditka uniforms. Pitt’s uniform tradition is to change uniforms and colors often.
May as well keep it going.
If we don’t see CV, sort of solidify’s mine and some other people’s theory that this was all pre-conceived and there was little to no real competition at all.
That is exactly how it usually works ! When you watch this crap for so long as many of us have, it’s sort of predictable. Isn’t it.
I’m intrigued by our VT game to see what OC Chaney does to redeem himself. That alone is good entertainment for me. I have a bit of a scheduling conflict as my golf tee time next Saturday is at 8:12am. Hopefully VT gets the ball first or my golfing partners play “ready” golf and we finish in 3-1/2 hours.
LB Scooby Wright of Arizona played last night after his season opening game knee injury. Maybe Conner coming back is not as far fetched as many on this blog figure.
On paper they’ve had the better teams, but for some reason we seem to have their number. They feel much more comfortable at home against us but believe me they are no liability nger looking past the Panthers anymore. That’s probably not a good thing but they are apprehensive when the face Pitt that some misfortune is always at hand just waiting to disappoint the Hokies Faithful.
Based on ECU yesterday, it looks like Via Tech is susceptible to heavy doses of Run. Wonder if our OL gets the blocking down by 10/3!!? Wonder if there’s any read option in the game plan? It would be fun to watch James around end on a few read options!
So here comes the kerosene. If NP struggles, CV may have more success against VT with his running skills. Just saying. At some point, we need to settle on a qb. My approach is different. When a baseball pitcher doesn’t have his best stuff, he gets yanked. You can’t be perfect every game. If not performing well, I have ni issue with yanking a player. I sure hope the big uglies show up for the first time this year. We need a road grader effort. Still a game won or lost in the trenches!
Your comment about the Northern Va. folks feelings about Pitt facing Va. Tech is exactly what rivalries are made of. Beat Va. Tech this week and we are well on our way to a real ACC rivalry. That will make Pitt right at home in the ACC.
A little nuts, don’t you think?
