Internet free weekend, and I come back to this.
Pitt wide receiver Tyler Boyd is suspected of driving under the influence after being pulled over early Friday morning, but no charges have been filed.
Boyd, 20, was stopped for a traffic violation around 2:35 a.m. Friday on Route 885 in Jefferson Hills, according to Jefferson Hills police Sgt. Kevin King.
“There is suspicion of alcohol, but there are no results of any test at this point,” King said today. “At this point no charges have been filed and no results of any toxicology tests at this time.”
Legally, this could turn out to be very minor. Perception wise… welp, a bit more problematic.
Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi issued a relatively standard statement.
“Tyler’s situation is both serious and disappointing,” Narduzzi said. “We have high expectations for the young men in our program, on and off the field. Tyler understands that and knows he must be responsible for his actions. Certainly he will be held accountable to our internal standards of discipline and behavior.”
There is no point in saying much beyond that until it becomes clear what charge Boyd actually faces. Right now, the only thing Boyd has been cited for is the traffic violation that led to him being pulled over to start this.
Regardless of the report, Boyd screwed up. It merely becomes a question of how badly.
Boyd — or at least someone speaking for Boyd — is supposed to be issuing a statement today.
The Narduzzi decision is another matter altogether. I just hope that Nard Dog contemplates long and hard on the matter while focusing on the WWPCD bracelet he wears for guidance, prior to making his final decision.
(WWPCD= What Would Paul Chrystal Do?)
Tyler realizes that he is an ambassador for the university and for himself and will always remember the lessons learned from his momentary lapse in judgment and he looks forward to preparing for and competing fully this upcoming season. Tyler would also like to thank the Jefferson Hills Police Department for their professionalism in handling this situation.
It will be interesting for Narduzzi, but my thoughts on this remain consistent. If he had a workout scheduled Friday morning early, he should be in trouble. If nothing scheduled and nothing in his blood test, he should get minimal extra work in the weight room. There are plenty of eyes on this from Clairton for sure.
