Uni Watch: MS Paint Edition

Oh, come on people. It isn’t even Memorial Day and we have already cycled through Pitt-PSU should play every year talk. Casually dismissed the Backyard Brawl. There is no more issue about bringing back the script Pitt. Expansiopocolypse is a dead subject. And now we are going to push through uniform alterations? Not having the usual tropes to make it through the summer doldrums are not useful for content.

I can’t — I can’t do this. I won’t be a party to trying to see how we can really squeeze two months worth of babble on the fictional concept of getting an on-stadium campus.

Okay, so as Reed and many others noted, Coach Pat Narduzzi alluded to new football uniforms on the DC Alumni visit.

KDKA’s Richie Walsh — who has become the man with the sources in the football department since the hiring of Narduzzi (or firing of Peterson, depending on your POV) — has what can kindly be put as crude mock-ups of the planned uniform changes.

KDKA for Photo credit

KDKA for Photo credit

Putting aside the crude, extremely crude MS Paint styling to this, and there isn’t really anything here that different from the present Pitt unis in terms of color. The white helmets, I suppose, but that’s it. The three different colors can and will be mixed and matched for more variety. That’s been the trend and Pitt has been part of it the last two years.

These are obviously very crude and simple designs. While there is apparently final approval made on the uniforms, this kind of image does nothing to show texture and really anything beyond the basic colors and style of the numbers. Piping on the uniforms, logos, etc.  I doubt even the script Pitt on the helmets will be in that proportion.

The other thing to note, is that these are for 2016. Not this upcoming year. Nike designs and manufactures the uniforms so there has to be time to work out the details and get approvals.

Finally there is this:

Also, there will be an alternate fourth uniform style. Pitt will go back in time with the colors, but it won’t look anything like the uniform from the ‘70s or the throwback one from 2005.

The royal blue and mustard will make an appearance once a year.

That seems most intriguing. As a fan of the royal blue and mustard look — more so than the script — I look forward to it. From the wording, though, it is unclear as to whether that means there will be an alternate throwback and the 70s style as well each season. I could see it going either way.

The speculation is rightfully heavy that the alternate look will debut for the Pitt-PSU game. As if needed more things to hype it.

I would think WVU needs us more than PSU does. But as long as Tony Gibson is at WVU, they will be able to recruit in W Pa.

While PSU is a national recruiter, they seemed to have put a bigger focus in-state recently. If Pitt can put a consistent winner on the field and split with PSU, it should do wonders recruiting wise.

Comment by wbb 05.22.15 @ 1:13 pm

@wbb, they just received the official notice of allegations. Any action is still (years) in the future. The Power 5 will be out of the NCAA before anything happens to UNC.

Comment by 2$Chuck 05.22.15 @ 1:52 pm

UNC has 3 months to respond.. then the NCAA can sanction (remember, there is no due process here)

I believe, like USC, OSU and PSU, there is enough evidence that has been made public here that the NCAA has to provide sanctions … and academic fraud should be taken very seriously.

Comment by wbb 05.22.15 @ 2:09 pm

I just realized that I played football with Tony Gibson back in 5th and/or 6th grade. Small world.

Don’t think we can keep WVcc out of Pa. by not playing them.

That wouldn’t happen anyway, but didn’t they also sign a contract with Pedo State to renew their series with them.

Some of the greatest Pitt games ever have involved WVcc, I just don’t think you can throw that all away.

Comment by Emel 05.22.15 @ 5:32 pm

The Script was/is priceless and classy.

Only an utter moron would replace it with some sort of unrecognizable bust of an animal head.

Just as only an utter moron would replace a 60,000 seat football stadium with a 12,000 seat basketball arena.

NOBODY TEARS DOWN CAMPUS FOOTBALL STADIUMS WITH NO PLAN TO REPLACE THEM.

NOBODY!!!

Can we be done with politics for awhile and start a conversation about an on campus stadium? LOL.

Maryland is spending a $115M on refurbs and Kentucky is spending $140M. Tulane just built one, Houston is building one, Baylor just built one, Alabama State just built one. Refurbs are huge. Apparently all the other boards of trustees are plain stupid.

Comment by wbb 05.23.15 @ 6:44 am

Too bad LeBron wasn’t a one and done, LOL. Who would have bought that National Championship?

Nice segue to basketball. Can Jamie’s recruiting get any worse? He missed on every top recruit he tried to close. He came up with three transfers that will probably hardly see the floor. We find out that the guy we cried about all year is transferring. Just don’t see how Jamie turns this around.

So the ND QB is transferring to FL ST. Another example of why this rule is ridiculous.

Comment by PittPT 05.23.15 @ 7:56 am

Contrast Jamie to Narduzzi closing Hendrix vs losing Gibbs to UConn. Our BBall mojo is gone, Football on the rise although we need a new Pat Signal.

Comment by gc 05.23.15 @ 8:09 am

I’m sure the coaching staff is all spending a long weekend with their families, but the calendar will be flipping to June here shortly. Narduzzi will be running his camps and hopefully seals the deal on a few recruits.

June was always good to Paul Chryst. It would be nice to see this current class get into double figures before camp starts. Been stuck on 3 for awhile.

I hope everyone out there has a nice, safe, enjoyable holiday weekend. I know it’s Memorial Day but it will be Labor Day weekend before we know it! Excited for the start of the Duzz Era…

Hail to Pitt!!!!

Comment by Pap76 05.23.15 @ 10:33 am

I really hate that we don’t play WVU. I get all the recruiting bullshit, but what about us paying fans? Why the fuck is Akron on the schedule but not WVU? I’ll give up a recruit or two a year to have a game that actually means something.

Comment by Chris 05.23.15 @ 1:12 pm

Every game means something Chris. That is the beauty of college football. Scheduling works as follows for most programs :
2 guaranteed wins
1 50-50
1 upset potential

This is how our schedule works this year. Akron and YSU as guarantees; Iowa as 50-50 and ND as a potential upset. It makes no sense to schedule 4 50-50 games or 4 upset potential games. You schedule this way so that on your bad years, you can make a bowl and get a payday. On the great years, you have a chance to be 4-0 in out of conference. In your better than average years you go 3-1 and have a chance to get to 9 wins.

All acceptable numbers. Ask an AD about scheduling and this is the answer you will most likely receive. Follow the money dude.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 05.23.15 @ 2:39 pm

Sad as it is, Youngstown St and Akron mean more than they should as grudge games, and both with respectable, pedigreed HCs. Once we clearly kick their a$$es regularly we can start talking about upgrading the schedule..

Comment by PittPT 05.23.15 @ 2:55 pm

Good point PittPT on Akron and YSU. Dhuffdaddy is right about the scheduling. When made these are thought of as guaranteed W’s. Paul Chrystal will tell you not so much…

As impressive as Narduzzi has been he is a 1st time HC. Akron and YSU are coached by guys who have coached and won in the SEC a good Big. I would not be shocked if Pitt list one of these 1st two…

Comment by Pap76 05.23.15 @ 3:55 pm

Should say SEC and the BIG

Comment by Pap76 05.23.15 @ 3:57 pm

@sweetCarlina… right on! Note the script is half of the icone look they mention! Also the colors of that last championship era we were all a alive for!!

Killed by pinheads…

Note Penn State at #2… as it states and “for generations” PSU has had same look… same with others on the list!!

Comment by Pittscript 05.23.15 @ 4:16 pm

I laughed with the inference of YSU and Akron being sure wins in our schedule. If this team has learned anything over the last few seasons it is that NO Pitt opponent can be considered a guaranteed victory. If & when the guys who play the game for the Panthers prepare for every game like they going up against a FSU or OSU, then Pitt Football will actually become a team to be reckoned with.

Although I’ll gladly accept the wins over quality opponents like VT, Miami and Notre Dame, games that this team when focused and motivated have proven that they can beat, these high points are tainted by the major FAILS of the coaches and players when they’re so undisciplined to lose games against inferior competition because of just “mailing it in” on those games.

When I read about the lack of respect given to Pitt Football by some Blather posters who seem offended by the obvious, I offer only that you receive what you deserve and unfortunately this squad Doesn’t deserve much respect when they lose games that are enexcusable to lose in the first place.

Unlike many Pitt Fans who have given up on the Panthers ever being able to acquire the lost status that was theirs back in the 70s & 80s, I know that Pitt can get that back again. I’m more encouraged at this point in time than at any other since those glory days because I see a real shift in the “want to” of the University’s administration now that is so very essential to have before you can get to square one in building a championship program.
We’re a long way off from an ACC Championship but then again if Narduzzi can produce some rookie head coach magic, we just might be closer than we think.

Any team that can beat the likes of ND, VT and Miami on a given day has the potential of doing some real damage in the ACC. The issues that need to be effectively dealt with for that to transpire though is getting this team to practice like champions all the time and prepare for even our weakest opponent like they’re a powerhouse and even more importantly getting every player to think of themselves as true champions because once that’s accomplished the “want to” factor in the players head’s gets turned on. When that occurs, that’s when champions are truly borne.

Comment by Dr. Tom 05.23.15 @ 4:33 pm

some of these preseason games are scheduled well in advance. And the good non-con games may become even rarer since I believe 3 of the P5 conferences play 9 league games .. or soon will. Nonetheless, as you may know, Pitt plays PSU 4 years starting in 2016, 2 years vs Okla St also starting 2016, one of those years has ND, and then in 2022 (I think) they play Tenn 2 years … and most likely will play ND one of those years also.

The commitment is there. The right decisions are being made. They have a long term vision and the right tactical plans to support it. We finally have leadership and a drive to be excellent. Nerdy and Cornhole were fine just being members of the club. They were content with mediocrity. I’m glad the leaders in place today actually lead.

And with the YSU’s and Akron’s you need to think of beating them 80-0. Anything less is a loss. That’s how champions think.

here is a recap of the Meet & Greet in Philly posted on Cardiac Hill the other day …. seems like more of the same

two observations:

– while he did QB an upset at ND as well as the biggest Pitt victory in recent year, Pat Bostick’s contributions as an alum far outweighs his playing days. Kudos to Matt Cavanaugh who may have found a QB with a major hitch in delivery but certainly not one in his character.

– it remains to be seen if it translates on the field but the enthusiasm and confidence the new staff generates is something to behold. Right now, it’s hard not to think good thoughts

6’9 Rafael Maia, good rebounder and averaged 10 ppg last 2 years

Pitt is far from loaded with their newcomers but they help in many aspects, including defense and depth, two huge weaknesses last season.

Chris Dokish @ChrisDokish

Alonzo Nelson-Odoba will REALLY help Pitt with his defense. The center position for the Panthers will definitely be improved this year.

The beautiful city of Pittsburgh (maybe not the Grandest-Metropolis pure size-wise, but it’s clean, the downtown is beautiful, and whole city has true-Character) — The Pederson Events Center (Great Home Stadium, always in the top-20 nationwide when College BBall arenas are ranked) —— and now, ACC affiliation, resources, and nationwide Basketball exposure…

Chancellor Gallagher not only wanted to bring in a Resource-Infuser and Bridge-Creator to Alumni and Fans in Scott Barnes, but he brought in a man passionate about the game of Basketball. And no-offense whatsoever to Utah State (been there, nice people and I respect them) — but Scott Barnes has walked into a situation where he can make Pitt as big and successful as he can envision.

P.S. Heinz field will be massively improved and look amazing for TV-audiences—-if we all Fill-It!!! lol

Doc Tom, that is the inference. When you schedule opponents, that’s how you do it. If you can’t beat those teams quite regularly (i.e. 9 out of 10), you have over-scheduled and kiss the bowl games and extra cash good bye for that year. Even when we get better, we will continue to schedule out of conference the same way. Find me a program that doesn’t have cupcakes. College football has no exhibition games, so those are the games you use to tinker with lineups and make some mistakes.

Look at the Dairy High School out east. Their schedule has at least 8 cupcakes on it. They will be heavy favorites in 8 or 9 games because of the weak schedule. Can’t wait for the gazette and trib to start building them up. Sickening!

story on ex-Panther Jason Pinkston who pretty popular and then sympathetic figure here in Cleveland

Comment by wbb 05.24.15 @ 6:08 am

No doubt you need to schedule cupcakes to insure enough wins to get to a bowl game. The problem for Pitt is that unlike PSU it does not have a fan base that will show up for these kind of games.

Tough luck for Pinkston, wish him the best.

I am not nearly as positive as Dokish, while I hope we get some help from one of these guys, the recent experience says we won’t. It is very frustrating that Jamie can’t get enough elite players to come to Pitt and has to bring in guys that are marginal at best. Especially while the elite of the ACC reload with NBA quality talent every year.

Comment by PittPT 05.24.15 @ 8:47 am

What massive improvement will there be at Heinz?

Are we getting ACC logos on the field? Pitt script at the 50? Beer sales? A replacement song for Sweet Caroline? Are we talking new traditions before, during and after the game?Just not sure how much that stadium can be improved for the college game day experience.

Its still gonna have a view of the city and not Pitt campus. Its still gonna have those stupid ketchup bottles by the scoreboard. Its still gonna have a crappy field surface. Its still gonna be too large for Pitt.

You’ll still see those yellow seats. If you want to walk around the stadium prior to the game, you’ll be in a sea of asphalt parking lots and garages.

Game day experience can be improved with winning, a Heisman candidate and improved attendance (assuming our fans actually stand and cheer and make some noise).

But what specifically will be about the college experience? Talk to me about spirit, tradition, connection with the university, pre and post game activities, pomp and excitement.

I’m all for a more intimate stadium experience and Heinz will always be just too large for Pitt (think Pete at 12k vs Consol at 20k capacity) With that ratio, Pitt really should be looking at a 45k stadium. Pitt B-ball isnt playing at Consol for a reason. The Pete gives Pitt a huge home court advantage.

But despite the corporate look and feel, there can be something done to enhance the experience through traditions, some cosmetic changes, and some activities designed to pump you up and generate school spirit and a real connection with Pitt the school, not Pittsburgh the city.

I’m looking for some specifics.

Comment by TX Panther 05.24.15 @ 9:19 am

Tx Panther, the one thing about Heinz you listed above that trumps everything else is yellow seats … specifically the empty yellow seats. If most of them are filled, it likely means the team is winning and then everything about Heinz is minimalized, including the fact it is off-campus.

Comment by wbb 05.24.15 @ 9:42 am

I’ll grant you the optimal scenario would be Pitt’s own 48k stadium …. but since there is near zero chance of that happening, then filling those yellow seats is the next best scenario.

Competition is usually good.

If I were Nix, Maia or Nelson-Odada I would be working very hard this summer and fall to improve my game and conditioning before the season starts.

Comment by Howard 05.24.15 @ 10:08 am

These graduate transfers will definitely help. Especially with interior D and rebounding.

Unfortunately with the new additions I see next years team as a middle of the pack ACC team that will make the tourney but be eliminated the 1st weekend..again. I fear that may be Jamie’s ceiling anymore. I hope I’m wrong and he figures out to get Pitt back to being in the conversation as an upper echelon team within their conference and on a national level.

I think he did the best he could at filling some serious needs with these transfers. I still find it very troubling he was this desperate. Should not have come to this…

Comment by Pap76 05.24.15 @ 10:59 am

TX P. please stop thinking so small. Pitt is on its way to being a football power in 1 of the 2 real power conferences – ACC & SEC – in the future because of southern demographics. So a 45K stadium will be way too small. The only school defying southern demographics today is OSU.

Comment by Rayhpgh 05.24.15 @ 11:17 am

The city of Pittsburgh needs light rail to Oakland. Pitt needs a sponsor (UMPC, Cuban, etc.) to get Pitt stadium rolling. Grants need to available. On/near campus sites need to be studied. A lot of work.

Comment by Frank MD 05.24.15 @ 11:42 am

When Pitt was top dog of the East and had Green and Marino, you barely saw Pitt stadium over 50k in capacity except for games against Penn State and Notre Dame. The reality is that Pitt is not a State school with a massive undergrad population or alumni base. Moreover, it competes against other activities in the City during Saturdays. I don’t ever see Pitt consistently generating over 50k for games. Nothing wrong with that. We’ll never be 107k strong. Thats why a smaller, more intimate venue will work wonderfully.

And I don’t think the new leadership regime is gonna shy away from hard work. If an OCS is part of their tactical plans to achieve their overall strategic mission of excellence, they will at least commission a feasibility study on the matter.

Comment by TX Panther 05.24.15 @ 12:58 pm

at any one time, PSU has about 2 1/2 times the enrollment of Pitt including over 40k at the main campus in the middle of PA with the most local nearby attraction being the state penitentiary. Plus, PSU will always have exponentially more alums than Pitt.

Any comparison is both futile and unfair.

Comment by wbb 05.24.15 @ 3:34 pm

Rayhpgh–you are absolutely correct. You don’t size a stadium for the average crowd. You size for the maximum crowd. A 45K stadium is rinky-dink, small time, an admission that you never aspire to more than mediocrity and rarely tasting a top 25 ranking much less a top 5 or top 10 ranking. I desire a return to greatness for Pitt football, not an acceptance of continued mediocrity.

Comment by pitt1972 05.24.15 @ 4:39 pm

So you’d rather stare at 20k yellow seats on average each game? Let’s deal with reality and not fairy world. Pitt does not have enough undergrads and alumni to support a 70k plus stadium. Do you think there is a reason why the Pete is only 12k and not 20k like Consol. You can always move the ‘big’ games to a larger venue. Shit, pitt can’t even sell out Homecoming. You talkin about a bigger stadium because of some inferiority complex is sheer madness. We are what we are. A private city school with a small unpassionate alumni base. Competing against other things goin on that day in the City. Not some cow pasture where Kool Aid is given out to the cult members of a hick town. Embrace who we are. In our six years of relevance in football, how may sell outs did we have at Pitt stadium. Ground yourself in reality man.

Comment by TX Panther 05.24.15 @ 5:00 pm

TX Panther–Absolutely! I would rather have 20,000 empty seats for 3-5 home games each season than turn away those 20,000 fans who want to see the other 1-2 big games that will draw the 65-70,000 (or moving the game to Heinz for those games). In general, at Heinz, i wouldn’t object to not selling the closed end endzone seats for the lower demand games. if they did that much of the empty yellow seat syndrome would be fixed.

I think one of your basic premises is wrong, in any case. If there would ever be an on-campus Pitt Stadium it wouldn’t be before Heinz is torn down and replaced (15-20 years from now). At that point there would be no need to stare at “yellow” seats in the new 65,000 or so seat Pitt stadium . They could be painted a less obvious color (Navy?).

FWIW, I wouldn’t object to one day Pitt having a “flex” stadium that seats about your 45 on the sidelines in chair back seats and has endzone bench seating that only becomes available (folded away or tarped for lower attendance games) for the large seating demand big games so long as the bench seating pushed big game capacity into the 65-70,000 range. You could flex from 45K to 55-60K to the 60-70K by opening either one or both endzones based on the demand for seats.
