Presser for the New AD

Filed under: Conference — Reed @ 10:02 am

We all saw the breaking news about PITT hiring ex-Utah State Athletic Director Scott Barnes as the new AD and here are the formalities of introduction.

MEDIA ADVISORY

From: E.J. Borghetti
Executive Associate Athletic Director/Media Relations

Re: Friday Press Conference

The University of Pittsburgh will hold a press conference to address its athletic director position on Friday, April 24, at 3 p.m. The press conference will be held on the first floor of the William Pitt Union (3959 Fifth Avenue) in the Lower Lounge.

Media outlets with marked vehicles only may park in the circle located on the Fifth Avenue side of the William Pitt Union.

UPDATE: There will be a livestream of the press conference.

OK Reed, I want your take. I’m actually very much looking forward to hearing what you have to say as you have teased it might go against the mostly positive view. Curiouser and curiouser!

Comment by JoeKnew 04.24.15 @ 4:58 pm

1618mt – there will be no ‘lightening up’ by yours truly, nor should there be by any PITT fan until we actually beat YSU and Akron in the same season! None, Zip, Nada, Zilch, No Way… When we accomplish that task in Narduzzi’s 3rd year of a 5 year contract then I will relax.

Until then – I’m from Missouri, show me the money! (and I don’t me Elijah Field’s money either although that was a nice part-time job he could do when not practicing or studying to get him through the rigors of a PITT undergraduate degree.)

Comment by Reed 04.24.15 @ 5:02 pm

Our front porch is now devoid of that ratty couch. Our new AD gave it to the Hoopies to burn.

Comment by TX Panther 04.24.15 @ 5:03 pm

OPG – I’m with you on the UPitt was not an athlete…he may have tried out for the team – but didn’t play…former coaches/players have too much respect for the game they (and others) played.

Moving from the BE to the ACC is like a AAA baseball team or an AHL team moving up to the bigs…it takes time to develop the connections as well as to recruit up.

Despite his comment about the lady panthers – that team really stood out this year and deserves a lot of credit!

Comment by markp 04.24.15 @ 5:06 pm

OK, Now I know I’m missing something. What the hell is going on??

Comment by JoeKnew 04.24.15 @ 5:09 pm

i’m optimistic about the hire. he can’t make the athletic department any more irrelevant than it already is.

Comment by goalie44 04.24.15 @ 5:25 pm

Upitt believe it or not I agree with u about a lot of things Pitt. Let me get this straight you criticized Pitt for hiring Cryst and Narduzzi for being cheap and not hiring a head coach from the SEC. Now you criticize them for hiring an experienced Ad and you praise WVU for hiring Joe Billy Bob from Alabama with no experience. Which is it experience or no experience ?

Comment by Chick 04.24.15 @ 5:26 pm

Experience from a legit conference that is recognized. I like the potential for Narduzzi but he is and has always been a asst.coach. Dick Lebeau anyone. I would prefer a HC with Exp. He may be good time will tell. The AD baffles me. Small Conf. from out west. I see no connections. WVU’s guy is Mr. ACC and spent some years at Bama. So yes another example of cheap. Chryst only a Asst. Narduzzi only a Asst. This AD small school out west Cheap.

Comment by Upittbaseball 04.24.15 @ 5:45 pm

Some of the biggest criticizers of Pitt are all ex athletes I played with in different sports at Pitt. You guys are funny. Criticize and you can’t be an athlete or have played the game. Maybe if you saw some of the idiotic things Pederson did and Pitt supported maybe you would see the same thing. Big East had Notre Dame and L’Ville who are basically the best teams in the ACC Baseball now so that is silly. Look at our record in Baseball Mark. Oh and sorry women’s hoops is painfully boring to 97% of America.

Comment by Upittbaseball 04.24.15 @ 5:49 pm

I have had bosses like Upitt, always critical, never satisfied. Usually covering some insecurity or incompetence. I have even been told my idea sucks and have it come back some time later as their great idea. But in this case, if like Upitt you are skeptical about Pitt’s choices and chances, you will be proven right more often than not. Depending on where you set the bar, you can almost always be right. In any case you won’t be disappointed ifyou expect failure.

I would rather have a positive attitude and be proven wrong later. I hope the new guy has as much success as Cas Myslinki.
Although I was on an Olympic sport during Myslinki’s tenure. We were definitely second class citizens, he attended a meet once and the coach would have passed out had he not been on a strong sedative ( most of the time). So if you think Pitt has a laisse faire attitude regarding athletics now, you have no idea.

Comment by gc 04.24.15 @ 6:06 pm

I was a gymnast at PITT. we were not very good. During thr early 60’s our westling team was fair. The basketball team was not so good, no the baseball team. (trimenster system) But all were good academically. You know something Upitt? We all had alot of fun. Nobody was negative and I don’t remember anybody with your attitude.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 04.24.15 @ 6:08 pm

You can spin any hire any way you want. WVU, personally I think it was a good hire, but if you spin it you could say something like ” this guy must be washed up or hiding or running from something, why else would he leave the SEC?” You can take a positive or negative on all of it. Over the years we have got a lot wrong, but if we won the NC one year some people would immeadtely bitch we were going to suck the next!

Comment by JoeKnew 04.24.15 @ 6:39 pm

Anton Grady – Cleveland State – 6’8″ PF graduate transfer who is eligible immediately is considering Pitt. Averaged 15 pts and 8 rebounds per game – played 29 minutes per game

Comment by Erie Express 04.24.15 @ 6:42 pm

@Upitt
I see you on here all the time talking about how much money Pitt should pony up for big time guys and how much they overpay the guys they have.

May I assume that you are a huge donor?

If not, then take your sophomoric quips to an SEC or WVU blog where they belong.

Comment by Barvo 04.24.15 @ 7:07 pm

Was Jeff Long a cheap hire?

PSU AD makes less then we pay. Is he bad?

Comment by Frank MD 04.24.15 @ 7:55 pm

Wiz Kalifa is the musical guest on SNL on May 2nd .. maybe he’ll sing Sweet Caroline

Comment by wbb 04.24.15 @ 8:25 pm

There are TROLLS that are parked on the blog, as “regulars”… repetitively negative and insulting to Pitt…

…and no its not about a ‘diversity’ of opinion.

A few people are NOT Pitt fans… they are pathetic.

It’s a reason why myself and I assume others fade away.

Yet Chas and others just let it go on…

whaaaatever,

…the fact is on days like this when as a Pitt fan you just want to enjoy the optimism, …. DON’T come here…

… a real buzz kill…

I’m outta here for now and back to twitter where I can enjoy my Pitt school making good moves.

Comment by Pittscript 04.24.15 @ 8:49 pm

Sorry for the delay in response. The fact that Ben Howland was brought up as a west coast guy is interesting. He didn’t stay long. Built a real nice program and then poof, a bad AD slowly killed it. He also left. West coasters typically don’t matriculate to the northeast. I have been called dumb and stupid, although never in the same sentence…yet.

There is a reason the northeast and midwest is losing population. Call it what you want. Weather, opportunity, disdain for grey skies and no sunshine for over half the year. So again I ask, what gives anyone the idea we won’t be going through this again in 4 years? I am sure he would leave tomorrow for the AD job at San Jose St or wherever he played college ball.

I would hope we get good years from him and I do like the enthusiasm. My broader point was let’s wait and see. AD’s get way too much credit for taking their universities into conferences. Let’s not forget that it is the conferences that send out the invite if they want you. An AD gets credit when they approach a conference whilst already in another and sees if it is a better move. If he comes in and matriculates Pitt to the big10, 11, 12, 13 then he is doing something special. Not the move itself, but rather orchestrating it on his own volition.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 04.24.15 @ 9:03 pm

Guys, Upittbaseball is obviously a WVU fan/student/whatever. It comes out in everything he writes. I try to be very careful not to belittle or write something negative about other bloggers on this site. I learn alot from the people posting here plus it is fun. But this Upittbaseball is nothing but negative.

This is one of the things you can’t take seriously. Relax and forget the so called trolls.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 04.24.15 @ 9:19 pm

Hey speaking of WVcc….one of theirs made this short list.

The most overpaid coaches in college football.

link to cbssports.com

Comment by Emel 04.24.15 @ 9:26 pm

Don’t know how Franklinstein didn’t make the list at $4.3 mil per.

Maybe cause he’s only been in Creepy Valley for 1 year.

link to sports.usatoday.com

Had the list been say… Top 15 most overpaid, the 2 Paulies might have appeared on it. That being Rhoads at $1.8 and Cheesehead at $1.6 per.

Comment by Emel 04.24.15 @ 9:33 pm

dhuffdaddy, Dixon is a West Coast guy who stayed at the top of his career.

I memtioned earlier Spokane is similar to Pittsburgh culturally/value wise. While Pittsburgh is larger it is a manageable town to live in.

Spokane and Cheney, Wash. have a bunch of cold snowy/gloomy days, but not rainy as Seattle. It always rains in Seattle. Eastern Washington was home to Barnes both growing up and professionally. He ain’t no Southern Cal boy.

Barnes went to Fresno State. I think that is not quite Santa Barbara.

He stays a while wherever he goes. Plus how many biggeer AD jobs are there in college sports?

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 04.24.15 @ 9:41 pm

The Navy coach is by far the most paid Navy official – $1.5 million.

Comment by Frank MD 04.24.15 @ 9:43 pm

Oh my God Pitt fans just enjoy the moment. No Stevie!!! That’s it period! Anything else is better! I believe we are making the right moves and time will tell but criticizing the guy who hasn’t even had one day on the job is kind of pathetic! Hail to Pitt! I’ll say what chris peak has said before, there is a different feeling in Oakland, just enjoy it!!!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 04.24.15 @ 10:09 pm

Man, college football coaches are overpaid!!!

I am feeling really poor now. Obama, what did you do to the value of my money!!

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 04.24.15 @ 11:18 pm

lol OPG

A dollar’s purchasing power in 1913 is now worth 1 cent in 2015.

Barry is just the latest US prez, who have presided over the devaluing of our currency.

Comment by Emel 04.24.15 @ 11:35 pm

Yet again a non koolaid view and you are a troll or WVU Fan or Penn Stater. Mountain West. Period. Enjoy it if you want and Dixon for 6 more years where he is congratulated for Coppin Fucking State transfers. Wish I worked for you guys. Just do your best and make excuses for falling short. Pittscript – Go to Twitter and better yet start koolaidpanthers.com if that makes you happy.

Comment by Upittbaseball 04.25.15 @ 12:03 am

Im taking a break while everyone wants to have a koombyyaa party for our savior who never crossed the Mississippi in his life and highest role was a AD role in Utah in Mormon world. Hope someone here can be objective or this board will go to shit with all koolaid lovers.

Comment by Upittbaseball 04.25.15 @ 12:05 am

I can honestly say I am very happy right now with the state of PITT athletics.
OK, maybe except for Jamie’s lack of quality recruiting and Upitts baseball team. But I’m optimisticly happy!!!!

Comment by pittman4ever 04.25.15 @ 12:11 am

I really liked that “front porch” comment by Gallagher and Barnes.

Can Barnes bring the some Koch brothers money to Pittsburgh? Before prices go up, PITT should get some fracking rights

Oh well, I will have to put more money into the market. Tired of no return. Now that I know the new level of football coaches salaries.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 04.25.15 @ 12:22 am

pittman4ever, I agree. However, we should have been here awhile ago. Now all we have to do is win some games.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 04.25.15 @ 12:26 am

Upittbaseball, I applaud your decision posted at 12:05. Better late than never. In fact an even better idea would have been for you to have simply monitored the Blather yesterday. Sometimes silence is golden, for you, this particular thread should have been one of your golden moments.

Comment by Dr. Tom 04.25.15 @ 4:12 am

Not to be critical myself, but speculation is really all that us Panther Faithful have to grasp onto at this precise point in Pitt athletic history. The “substance” needs to materialize come September to keep the shine on all of these positive moves that the University has made over the last couple of years.

I’ve consumed my fair share of Koolaid over those years but at no time in recent Pitt history has the stars been so favorably aligned for future success as they are at this moment. And there is no Koolaid induced optimism in this opinion. Look at where our football program stands at this point in time:

Secure in a P5 conference.
A future OOC schedule that includes the likes of Iowa, ND, OSU and a resurrection of the Pitt-penn state rivalry.
The successful exorcism of a toxic AD with a replacement whose resume demonstrates a recent turn around success story at Utah State.
A new football coach that has a goal focused attitude that is all about winning football games and expecting his charges to seriously compete for conference championships right out of the gates.
A football team that has two offensive weapons whose accomplishments have already earned them all ACC honors.
Our new HCPN who is the right medicine right now to improve the health of a weak defense, being the defensive guru that he is.
An opening 2 game OOC opponent slate that has “payback” motivation written all over it with games against YSU & Akron to kickoff the season.
And a fan base that is pent up with the long overdue desire for their alma mater to become relevent once again on the national stage.

This situation is primed for takeoff. Winning is the essential catalyst now required to get this assembled concoction to react with explosive results. HCPC, has laid the ground work, “can Narduzzi kick this thing off into high gear immediately” is going to the million dollar question needing to be answered come this fall?

Until I see some “substance”, I’m taking a wait and see attitude. Us Pitt fans have all had our hearts broken so many times over the past few decades that we have every right to be apprehensive of the developing hype without it being backed up by results.

But with that being said, the POTENTIAL sitting on our front porch right now is huge. Show me results! Please, prove that my enthusiasm is warrented with results. I’d love to be so excited by those results that I am motivated to drag my front porch couch out into the street for a marshmallow roasting celebration!

This is could be a turning point in Pitt’s athletic history, let’s hope it is. Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Dr. Tom 04.25.15 @ 4:55 am

Dr. Tom – you are correct, speculation is the trade goods here on the Blather and in any conversation about what might happen in sports. College football isn’t NASA where every detail is mapped out and repeatedly practiced with trial and error until the margin of error almost disappears. If so it wouldn’t be fun at all.

So, for me at least, I take that same wait and see attitude toward Barnes as some others do. But I force myself to remember when I was in HS and a Jesuit Priest talked to me about being strongly opinionated and that was to “Wait to believe’ in something until you have looked at it from every angle and through everyone elses’ eyes. Then be willing to change your opinion later if circumstances warrant it.”

I truly get the excitement and joy some PITT fans are feeling right now and I’m happy they are happy. I just don’t feel that way at all right now but that doesn’t mean I won’t like this hire later after he shows us something concrete… or maybe I won’t and will feel as I do now. I will agree that we live in interesting times when it comes to PITT sports with the three major personnel changes the university went through in the last year.

As for UPITT – he has as much right to be here as any other commenter and just because you don’t like his attitude or what he writes doesn’t mean he can’t be correct in his opinions. He makes some very good points here and there, it is just hard to find them sometimes. The only reason I asked him to proofread his comments before hitting submit was for the strong profanity he sometimes employs.

The guys I talk to who read the Blather almost all say one of the reasons they enjoy it is because it doesn’t have the crude bottom-dwellers as some blogs do. That is what makes it enjoyable and easy to read. All of our readers/commenters have good points to make, are seemingly intelligent and mostly witty and that is a great combination of things for all of us wanting to read the comments.

So, Chas hardly ever edits words out of a comment (maybe never) or bans a commenter (once or twice I believe) so UPITT is going to be allowed to post on here unless he goes completely off the deep end. Now all he’s doing is wading in water just a bit deeper than the rest of us.

Comment by Reed 04.25.15 @ 6:09 am

Upittbaseball the king of negativity. Not a grad, not a
donor, not a jock. Just constantly critizing all things Pitt.
FYI, it is always easier to go negative than going positive.

Good day for Pitt…great school, great city, new energized
concenous building athletic adm/coaches team!!!

Comment by JR 04.25.15 @ 6:29 am

The new AD made some interesting points; establishing (re-branding); I think first of all we want to assess where we stand,” he said. “We want to take a look at it because it becomes an opportunity. But I do want to say this: That process at Utah State, to rebrand, was a 15-month process. It doesn’t happen overnight. It’s not just sticking a decal on a helmet. It’s a lengthy, thoughtful process. You want to make sure that you value the history and the heritage of your university while bringing a fresh look to it. There’s not only the branding opportunity, there’s a merchandising opportunity. I look at it as a possible opportunity that we’ll dive into.”

He also spoke about sitting down with HCPN to work together on an OOC schedule – and trying to extend to PSU series.

The journey may be slower than many would like, but at least we have someone to put us on a plan.

Comment by markp 04.25.15 @ 7:02 am

Sense of humor, well spoken and having been a student athlete, this new hire AD will continue the trend of improving Pitt athletics. His track record in excellent in both his financial awareness and the need for money spent wisely. In his due diligence, he met with Narduzzi to see where things are. Like what he heard. Had nice comments on Dixon but I think he is aware of the programs short comings and will be a big benefit there as well. In short Gallagher knows what he want and knows who can get er done.

Comment by Chethejet 04.25.15 @ 7:06 am

Emel,

How does a dollar in 1915 equate to a penny today?

Comment by Gas 04.25.15 @ 7:54 am

Obviously we want our marquis sports to be winners, but I hope there is a concerted effort to raise the level of competitiveness of all sports.

I have watched some coverage of SEC and B1G women’s gymnastics and their girls are amazing. I am entertained more by women’s college softball than by men’s baseball for some reason. Also soccer and lacrosse are both important in the ACC. Since like Old Pitt Grad, I was on the gymnastics team (which doesn’t exist anymore) and on a championship high school track team. I would like to see us competitive in those sports. Where do we run track anyway? How about volleyball, tennis anyone, golf? You never hear anything about these sports?

Stanford, a school known for academics, holds the most overall championships in all NCAA sports, we ought to emulate them.
