Come on Down Scott Barnes

Filed under: Athletic Department — Justin @ 9:02 am

As numerous places have reported, Pitt has hired Utah State Athletic Director Scott Barnes to replace some jagoff none of us liked. Barnes has an impressive resume since he took over for the Aggies in 2008, including chairman of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee and four consecutive bowl games under two different head coaches. Most importantly, Utah State set fundraising records during his tenure that resulted in success on the field and infrastructure improvements. No word yet on his opinion regarding an on campus stadium.

Per ESPN, DHR International was the search firm who headed up the effort.

@TX Panther…. great list… ironically if you watch the youtube interview I posted above those are precisely the points he hit talking about what he was doing at Utah state…

Dead on…

Comment by Pittscript 04.23.15 @ 7:17 pm

Not to be ignored, this is a big pay day for Barnes, who I assume has effectively doubled his salary.

NCAA Athletic Directors Salaries

#34 Pittsburgh Steve Pederson – $596,595

#69 Utah State, Scott Barnes – $350,108

I think he’s a very good hire.

The kind of AD Pitt needs at this point. The kind of AD that was missing when that Cornhole Jagoff ran the show.

I’d love to ask him the question about the feasibility of an OCS. The right answer would be ‘Lets raise the funds to commission a feasibility study and let the data and facts tell us all.’

Scott will be worth millions if he can help change the mindset and culture of Pitt athletics.

Just so you know, Cornhole failed on 4 out of the 5 criteria. And we wonder why Pitt sports is on the trash heap.

Compromise…”Revival” Allman Brotheres!

Comment by Dan 72 04.23.15 @ 8:18 pm

Seriously, nice scenery but sitting in a concrete bowl on cheap ass metal bleachers just doesn’t do it. Please tell me you don’t think this is something special!! I mean Heinz is no prize but it is MUCH more big time than this turd hole!

Comment by JoeKnew 04.23.15 @ 9:14 pm

The view and setting are just amazing but put this in pittsburgh and you would say some HS field in TX was as good and I would agree.

Comment by JoeKnew 04.23.15 @ 9:25 pm

The students can sit on those bleachers. They embarrass the school with leaving after that shitty song and whining about being bused.

Pitt’s stadium wouldn’t be a Turd hole. It would be referred to as the Pit or the Lair.

It would have more character and soul than that sterile bland ketchup stadium with screaming yellow seats.

Comment by TX Panther 04.23.15 @ 9:30 pm

Not arguing those points, only that that stadium is in a great site but really no big deal. Hate those yellow seats but get some asses in them so you don’t see them! That, more than anything will do it. It was great for some games over the years, nothing wrong at those games. Just not enough of them. Hey, Three Rivers was a whole lot worse but saw some great games there . About the only thing I agree on is that in 20 yrs when the Steelers are looking for a new site we should be prepared or we might be shit out of luck!

Comment by JoeKnew 04.23.15 @ 9:37 pm

And yes HS football stadiums in Texas are more impressive than Utah States but the mountain scenery is far more impressive than prairie land.

Imagine Pitt’s scenery with the backdrop of TD Cathedral in the north end zone.

Heinz doesn’t even allow ACC logos on the field. I feel no connection with Pitt being at Heinz, a stadium built on the cheap by the Rooneys (see piss troughs) surrounded by a sea of asphalt. Do visiting fans even know where our campus is located?

Comment by TX Panther 04.23.15 @ 9:37 pm

Just would love to showcase our campus to visiting fans of ACC teams. Pitt misses out on a huge opportunity.

Comment by TX Panther 04.23.15 @ 9:39 pm

Ya, not being shown campus sucks, on that I’m with you. The mountains are great. Thing is, let’s say we do plan for an OCS. Feasibility study takes a year, rasing funds, two to three minimum, buying land, improving infrastructure another three, then maybe one and a half to build. So for the next 8 or 9 years min. We are stuck. Don’t you think we should make the current situation better and the experience the best it can be while we do all that?
I’m not smart enough to know how to do those things, but that it’s what the new AD will be charged with doing, he has that expertise.

Comment by JoeKnew 04.23.15 @ 9:52 pm

Oh, and by the way, I agree Rooneys stopped building when government money ran out, and there are MANY things to bitch about, the piss troughs aren’t one of them. Great way to get large numbers in and out. Have heard a lot of complaints but never that one. One escalator only for each end of stadium has to be some type of safety hazard. Terrible concessions in upper levels, crappy playing surface(although better this year),soulless interior, and yes, bad color sceme for team that doesn’t fill it up. But piss troughs, nope!

Comment by JoeKnew 04.23.15 @ 10:09 pm

Shit, it’s late, now I’m commenting on piss troughs and Upitt is hitting up South Beach, good night all!

Comment by JoeKnew 04.23.15 @ 10:12 pm

Just said the setting and view was awesome not stadium. Mist stadiums I go to LSU and Boise and UF have bleachers to sit on. Nice seats down below. Imagine a stadium up on the golf course hill with open end zone towards cathedral of learning and Pittsburgh Skyline. Panther Den! Like LSU get a fucking panther and bring it to games. A cool one like a black irida Panther and it was Chemical Engineering nerds get up before game is over send release Timmy the Panther on their asses.

By the way, is PITT’s Economic Dept. any good? How is the undergrad business school? How are the job opportunities for PITT grads? This is for my grandson. My last class at PITT was in 1966? There was no undergraduate business school when I was there.

He also likes MD, PSU, and Rutgers.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 04.23.15 @ 11:13 pm

Old Pitt Grad,

He honestly couldn’t go wrong with any of his choices. We (rightfully) rag on PSU and Rutgers for athletics, but they’re both top-notch universities, just like our own alma mater. MD is also a great school, especially for business.

I didn’t attend Pitt’s undergrad business school (A&S 2010 grad here), but a number of folks I knew did, and they seem be doing just fine out in the real world. Obviously if your grandson wants to continue on to Katz, starting out at Pitt is a great call. This is pretty much the opposite for kids wanting to go to Pitt’s Med school – they’re better off studying undergrad elsewhere.

I received compliments on my Pitt education from just about everywhere that I interviewed after undergrad. Eventually I was able to get a job. Unfortunately in the real world, it’s often more who you know that what you know that gets you hired. I don’t know if the business school has any job placement or internship programs that would help your grandson after graduation, but I also don’t know if the other schools on his list offer those kinds of services either.

All in all, Pitt is an excellent school for just about any field of study, and with the choices that your grandson has, it’s really more about where he feels most comfortable – they’re all excellent choices.

Just my two cents, and all the best to you and your grandson!

Ryno – I just posted the Press Conference press release – it will be today at 3:00pm at the Student Union.

Comment by Reed 04.24.15 @ 6:42 am

Call me unimpressed for a variety of reasons. I’m drafting a piece for the weekend after I see the press conference but this hire smacks of getting something for as little as budget allowed rather than expanding the budget for a solid hire.

We’ll see, maybe I’ll feel a bit better after the presser.

@ PetePitt73 – as far as turning around football programs you can say that SP did exactly the same thing here at PITT. He was hired smack in the middle of the bad football teams in the mid-90s and we had winning teams 3 years afterward.

UPITTbaseball – perhaps you could take a minute and reread you posts before hitting submit.

Comment by Reed 04.24.15 @ 7:02 am

Reed- Respectfully disagree, I’m with the majority on this one. Love the hire based on credentials, love the fact that we waited to hire the right guy. And finally, I’m not surprised at all that it looks like we made a great hire considering that we finally have a great chancellor at the helm. Leadership starts at the top, and for the first time in ‘who knows how long’ we finally have those pieces in place.

Old Pitt Grad,

If your grandson has any interest in IT, things are booming in the ‘burgh. CMU is going to build a 420,000 SF Inovation Center just off Craig St. The CMU biz school is excellent by the way.

And then this, from this morning’s fish wrap:

Dan 72, the Allmans are my all time favorites, but … “people can you feel it, love is everywhere” … is more fitting for Woodstock than a FB game.

Comment by wbb 04.24.15 @ 7:23 am

Ugh, TX Panther saying the Pitt students embarrass the school by leaving early and complaining about the bus situation. Wow. That’s absolutely unreal. There are a lot of things to criticize about the current situation, but throwing the students under the bus like that is ridiculous. Shameful, really.

Comment by VictoryLites 04.24.15 @ 8:53 am

VictoryLites,
I agree with you . I think the student support the past couple of years has been good and spirited. Having attended a game at Virginia I found out they give away free tuition for a semester to one student in attendance during the 4th quarter of each home game. Pitt could afford that kind of enticement to further boost the students attendance. Also the Athletic department should focus on graduating seniors to buy season ticket plans, giving them a special discount not available to everyone, in order that the good times at Pitt football games continue in the future.

Comment by Spindler's Spirit 04.24.15 @ 9:04 am

VictoryL & SS – agreed on all fronts. Let new ADSB pull up a chair as we all wait w baited breath to see where his head is on OCS. In the meantime – lets tarp off the 300 level at Heinz, do things like give a semester of tuition & figure out how to improve the student busing issue (because it sucks & is possibly a vital factor in the argument for an OCS). Make it better for the kids first IMO. Personally I love the fact that he played his fair share of hoops.

Comment by ptbreezeb 04.24.15 @ 9:22 am

Oh PLEAZE.

All I see is with my own eyes are the facts. Students don’t stay for the 4th quarter. Maybe you are the exception but certainly not the rule.

And all I hear and see in interviews and print is the moaning and bitching from students about the bus situation. If I were still a student, I’d probably chime right in.

When I went to school, I walked drunk up Cardiac Hill to see games played on campus. I then walked drunk down that hill from Pitt stadium.

The Pitt student body could do better for football. I don’t see a ‘ZOO’ at Heinz.
