Well that first day was predictably bananas.

UCLA and the Alfords continue to lead a charmed life.

The Big 12 faceplants — hard. Texas down to Butler. Iowa State never put away UAB, destroying brackets everywhere.

Then there was Baylor blowing a huge lead against Georgia State. Creating an all-time moment at the buzzer. Both for the shot by R.J. Hunter and Head Coach/Dad Ron Hunter.

I can’t tell you how many times I keep watching that.

Matt Painter pulled a Jamie Dixon overcoaching special in the final seconds, which fails. Leading to overtime and Purdue falling to Cinci for the right to lose to Kentucky.

Then there was the 8-9 game between two talented, but — trying to be kind here — mercurial, teams in NC State and LSU. These two teams make me irrationally angry. Undeniable talent and athleticism all over the place. Poor coaching and no consistency are just as obvious.

In the end, the team that lost to Auburn in the SEC Tournament created an epic collapse to the team that lost by 16 to Boston College late in the season. Sixteen point halftime lead. Six straight missed free throws in final minutes. Unable to make a field goal in the final 10+ minutes — 0-12.

NC State is fully capable of knocking off Villanova. Or lose by about 15.

Hopefully today will be just as bonkers.

I stopped making brackets because Pitt was always in the tournament and as a stout fan I had to pick them all the way to the championship, which ultimately destroyed my bracket most years. I did not make a bracket this year because I hate rooting for my bracket when a particularly juicy upset is occurring. I loved rooting for UAB to beat Iowa State. Games like that are so much better to experience without guilt that my bracket would suffer. Go cinderellas!

thta’s the problem with all 2 Carolina teams … on a given night, they are either unebeatable or unbearable.

E.g., at ACC Tourney, NC State whips Pitt – not even close, next night Duke whips NC State – not even close, the next night, ND whips Duke -not even close.

This uptempo game may be fun to watch, but if you are not shooting well, you will not compete

Comment by wbb 03.20.15 @ 6:12 am

Upsets are more fun when they are not against Pitt. Kentucky ought to be shunned.

Comment by gc 03.20.15 @ 6:41 am

As I watched Purdue all I kept thinking was that this is Pitt version big 10. With Pitt out rooting for Sparty and Pitt grad Millers Wildcats. Really rooting against all of the Big Least and Atlantic preTend.

Comment by John 03.20.15 @ 6:50 am

I always pick 2 brackets with one having the cinderella pick/s. I miss the days when Pitt was a legitimate fina 4 pick(IMO).

Always have my wife and kids pick a bracket and enter each one in a $10/entry pool. Have won or placed a few years with biggest payout a little over $200 and one year where we got 1st, 2nd AND 3rd place al within the fam.

This year my overly competetive 13yo son is absolutely HATING that his Mom(“she knows nothing about basketball” is the phrase I had to hear much of last night) is leading our pool after day one.

I kind of like the Big East and the Atlantic American or is it American Atlantic. Hey, we left them .. they didn’t do anything to us.

In fact, I was thrilled when UConn won last year.

I also must admit that while I hope the ACC does good, it doesn’t bother me nearly as much when one of those teams lose compared toa few years ago when a BE team lost in the tourney.

I’m sorry … I guess I still haven’t warmed up to the ACC – in basketball.

Comment by wbb 03.20.15 @ 7:21 am

I always used to say that NC State was the Pitt of the ACC. Now that we are both in the ACC it’s more like we are the fraternal twin offspring of a cocaine laden sociopath and a meth-head hooker that consummated in the penthouse of the Four Queens in Vegas. Sadly, the hooker died a few years later at the hands of Craig James.

Comment by Yeti 03.20.15 @ 7:41 am

One thing, there were a lot of games where teams went extended periods without a hoop. Even the uptempo teams run into problems when somebody plays D. Not sure what to make of it but?

Love that video also. Kid shot that with confidence…he knew he made it as soon as it left his hands.

We are all Colonials tonight!

Lady Panthers tonight! I hope they show the kind of effort that was missing from Jamie’s collection of over-hyped misfits.

Comment by Isnore 03.20.15 @ 9:06 am

I believe ACC splits NCAA tourney and FB bowl money evenly between all teams even if they are not in the tournament or bowls. Maybe someone knows for sure.

Comment by Frank MD 03.20.15 @ 9:19 am

What sinks in that I hate now during this weekend (and 2 years ago) is that we are not one of the top 68 basketball programs in the country….and some of those at the lower end of that 68 are moving on….

Comment by TVax 03.20.15 @ 9:45 am

After watching all those games yesterday I started thinking about Jamie’s coaching, so I developed a simple “Coach Grading System.” This is my OBJECTIVE grade of Jamie:
1. RECRUITING: 5 (out of 10)
2. IN-GAME DECISIONS: 7
3. PRACTICE COACHING: 9
4. BASKETBALL PHILOSOPHY: 7
5. REPRESENTS UNIVERSITY: 10
Total: 38 (38×2=76)
76 out of 100 or 76%
Would love to hear your score for Jamie with this criteria. Thanks!

Someone stated several times this year that they thought the Big 12 was over rated….. Oh yeah that was me 🙂

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 03.20.15 @ 10:04 am

Jerry D had a write up in the Trib today and one of the comments on his article said: “Jerry my biggest grip with both papers here in pittsburgh is we give to much coverage to that other team way out in the middle of the state…you can be sure there paper in state college , pa does not cover our team in pittsburgh…I am proud to be a pitt panther suporter and wish both pittsburgh papers would be commited to pitt 1st let center county take care of penn state…”

about time!

Comment by markp 03.20.15 @ 10:21 am

markp, I;m sure you noticed the big picture of Franklin on both the online front page and sports page today in The Trib-Review.

Of course, not to be outdone, Audrey PG PSU beat writer is currently (once again) providing a blow-by-blow twitter acount of their BOT meeting. (I actually think that’s hilarious!)

Comment by wbb 03.20.15 @ 10:52 am

I used to get upset at the lack of Pitt coverage in the Pgh. media but given our football mediocrity and basketball ups/downs I can’t say I necessarily blame them. Also, we all know that every alum of “that” university is a zombie so I expect those folks to just keep writing no matter what happens. “Nittany Lions….brains….JoePA…brains…”

I’m pretty sure you could shoot a sequel of World War Z at a PSU home game with a camera on a tripod outside one of the gates to the stadium. You could save a boatload on film because if you shot it in B&W it would look identical to a color film.

Comment by wbb 03.20.15 @ 12:01 pm

wbb – yep- both papers do a better job of covering PSU – most of Pitt’s posts are negative even when we win or something good happens…or is low key!

But that’s the way it is – PSU FB non-conf schedule for the next few years pretty much guarantees a bowl bid…PSU’s basketball coverage (especially the women’s) became less and less as the season progressed though.

Comment by markp 03.20.15 @ 12:05 pm

In my watching of Pitt in the NIT and other big schools in the NCAA, many big teams are playing with little spirit. The big schools seem to feel that the little schools are beneath them for most of the game, then it’s too late. If the Power Five conferences made their own tournament we might have every team scrapping as hard as the smaller schools in every game. I’m not saying that’s the right thing to do, but it might make for the big schools playing a little harder.

Comment by Caw Miller 03.20.15 @ 12:08 pm

The fact is that the smaller schools and (of course) ESPN are the only ones who really care about the NIT .. and the players once again are only pawns.

Comment by wbb 03.20.15 @ 12:35 pm

@@@@@@

Regret the lack of coverage locally. Sam
Werner provides little or no news or
insight. Pitt must be a part On my way! job.

Comment by JR 03.20.15 @ 12:42 pm

Watching NC State with all their big men, and Pitt with none, made me kinda ill.

And they won in Pittsburgh.

Comment by Emel 03.20.15 @ 1:12 pm

Hahvahd shows grit and determination and hangs tough against The Tarheels.

Talent separation between the two teams as wide as The Gulf of Mexico, but the Crimson showed that they were not intimidated by the Carolina Blue uniform.

Pitt has a loooooong way to go before it becomes
relevant again//// a loooooong way!

Yep Arizona is a long ways from Pgh. He can’t get here fast enough !

Comment by Emel 03.20.15 @ 1:48 pm

If Georgia St keeps winning, Ron Turner will be coaching in a full body cast. That was definitely the highlight of the tourney so far…

Comment by Pap76 03.20.15 @ 2:03 pm

“Matt Painter pulled a Jamie Dixon overcoaching special in the final seconds, which fails. ”

Too funny Chas !

Comment by Emel 03.20.15 @ 2:30 pm

Syracuse sophomores B.J. Johnson and Ron Patterson are leaving the program and will look to transfer, multiple sources confirmed to ESPN.

Perhaps with all the ‘goings on’ at Cuse, they will lose their highly rated 2015 recruit class as well.
Or portions of it.

Comment by Emel 03.20.15 @ 2:35 pm

Hoopies got very nice treatment by the selection committee.

A short trip to Columbus, Ohio and a 5 seed.

Oliver Luck connection.

Comment by Emel 03.20.15 @ 2:49 pm

Watching the NCAA games shows how much more talent we need.

Comment by Frank MD 03.20.15 @ 2:57 pm

Hoopoes abOut to go down!

Comment by Dan 72 03.20.15 @ 3:31 pm

Yeti, very poetic and that was at 7:41 this morning. I think I was just going to sleep.

Jamie has to get a big man this off season. We are big name and should have a couple bigs on the bench.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 03.20.15 @ 4:55 pm

Hoopies survived but a BigJoke team didn’t. Hoosiers lose to one of the assorted lower seeds and teams that erected their status on beating a Dixon Pitt team.
That being Wichita State.

Comment by Emel 03.20.15 @ 5:04 pm

Frankmd +1, we need a big time infusion of talent. We don’t look nearly as talented as the losing teams.

Comment by gc 03.20.15 @ 5:26 pm

Duke with easy road to the final four, VA has to play Michigan St. in second game, should be a real slugfest as opposed to slogfest. Who sets up these brackets, Coach K’s uncle?

Some pretty good games for the first two days though. ACC hanging in so far.

Comment by gc 03.20.15 @ 6:18 pm

Funny I’ve been saying that since before the season started.

And infusion of talent.

Believe I said words to the effect, who was going to replace the rebounding & scoring of Patterson & Zanna and who was going to replace the passing of Patterson and of him being the conduit of the offense.

Same Kool-Aid gang will be out in full force next year as well.

Comment by Emel 03.20.15 @ 6:51 pm

The preppie Dukie bluebloods always get the easiest route to the Final 4. It doesn’t always work our for them. But the committee sure does try their hardest.

Comment by Emel 03.20.15 @ 6:53 pm

^^work out ^^

Another factor in my disinterest of this pretty much anymore.

Comment by Emel 03.20.15 @ 6:53 pm

We’re not all Colonials tonight; Duke put them to sleep like a good, well coached team should. Anyone who thought RMU had a prayer was delusional. Coach K learns from his mistakes; Dickey… not so much….

For all you cry-babies complaining about how other teams get preferential treatment, heres a teat for you to suckle: Pitt has underperformed in virtually every tournament they’ve ever played in from a seed-line perspective. The committee has cut us out share of breaks. Was it their fault we crapped out pants against Kent State? Marquette? Bradley? Pacific?

Make a few final fours, win a title or two, earn some respect, or STFU. It’s really that simple, and it’s all that really matters.

Carry on 🙂

Comment by thestumper 03.20.15 @ 8:07 pm

Yea they cut us a real ‘break’ last year huh.

Underseeded us, getting stuck in an 8/9 game which meant we had to play a #1 seed in the 2nd round.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, the game was in Florida as well….against Florida.

Carry on my …….. …

Comment by Emel 03.20.15 @ 8:20 pm

Jamie to waX poetically on CBS to share his many secrets of coaching ……,success?

Comment by Dan 72 03.20.15 @ 9:45 pm

I remember Blair dripping sweat during TO’s. Been watching segments of many different games for 2 days and saw kids glistening with sweat and thought about how hard they were playing. I don’t recall Pitt players looking like that this year. The tournament is so empty because we’re not in it, but with Dixon the emptiness was inevitable even if we were. Even so and in spite of Dixon if you want to gauge how far we’ve fallen think about how much we need to just get back to decent.

Comment by Old School Panther 03.20.15 @ 10:17 pm

Your right Old School.

You’ve got to work hard and WANT to play defense.
This group gave a half-ass attempt at playing defense all year. Which is why they were dead last in the ACC in defense FG %. And why even rent-a-win teams shot over 50% against them.

Last year’s team wasn’t great defensively either, they just had a much better offense because of Patterson. And a better post threat with Zanna.
