First off, the semi-official brewery of Pitt Blather is opening a new branch this weekend. Voodoo Brewery is opening another brewpub, Voodoo Homestead.

Voodoo Homestead — not a brewery or brewpub, but an unusual satellite pub selling just Voodoo brews — will open in a big chunk of the first floor of the former Homestead municipal building and fire station on East Ninth Avenue at Amity Street. The more-than-a-century-old, three-story building had been vacant for two decades when the borough approved selling it to Voodoo for $8,500 this past summer.

Since that time, the Voodoo crew has worked non-stop filling containers and containers with refuse, with a lot of that hard, dirty work being performed for free by volunteers, some of whom flew from distant cities to chip in.

Others volunteered to help decorate the decrepit but beautifully-boned building, gracing the vaulted ceiling with fanciful chalk artworks and colorfully painting the interior sides of two massive roll-up doors.

That’s why this weekend’s public opening was proceeded by a party for those volunteers, whose names are written in chalk behind the old-metal-barn-roofing-clad, 24-foot-long concrete-topped bar, right next to the chalked list of the beers that will be available to drink on premises or take home in growlers.

The article also gets into some of the lunacy of Pennsylvania liquor laws with the hoops Voodoo has to jump through for this. I realize every state is insane in their own unique ways with liquor laws, but Pennsylvania is a special kind of crazy.

As learned on twitter last week, one of the brews on tap will be the wonderful H2P IPA.

Voodoo’s head brewer, creator of H2P IPA , PittBlather loyalist and Pitt guy, Curt let me know that the plan is to have H2P on draft at Voodoo Homestead full time. Oh, and Curt will be on hand tomorrow.

It is my goal to keep H2P on draft at this location all the time, but it will largely be dictated by production ability/tank space, but I feel like I should be able to accommodate this. I will be around all day Saturday to chat beer and football.

Also, we will be pouring H2P before the Syracuse game at the Campus View Club at the Pete from 2:30-4pm before the game. H2P will also be on draft at the University Club. They have expressed a desire to have it available all the time, so we’ll see how that goes.

In addition to H2P Curt notes that there will be lots of their barrel aged beers — including their GABF award winning, Big Black Voodoo Daddy Stout aged in Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels. I’ve had some of this stuff, it is amazing.

Here’s their facebook page. And here’s the description of H2P. Definitely a place to stop by on my next visit to the ‘Burgh.

In other news, Jordan Whitehead isn’t going anywhere but to Pitt.

After dabbling with hoops briefly — he played a few games with Central Valley’s basketball team in December — he’s getting ready for his first season of college football. He’s been lifting and stretching. He may run sprints for the Warriors’ track team this spring.

The last two weeks, he’s been on Pitts’s campus, getting accustomed to the place he’ll play and study as a collegian.

“Everything is falling into place,” he said.

Not that Head Coach Pat Narduzzi is leaving anything to chance. He just happened to stop by Central Valley HS today. Which just about guarantees that Narduzzi is the last coach Whitehead will see face-to-face before Signing Day.

Pat Narduzzi makes no secret of what the approach will be for Pitt football under him.

“I think there’s a lot of things we do well at Michigan State, so I would say you will see Michigan State of the city of Pittsburgh, really,” Narduzzi told the ‘Griff and Grinz’ Show on Lansing’s 92.1 FM The Team, per MLive.com’s Mike Griffith.

“Why would you change the blueprint of what Coach Dantonio has done there?” he asked. “There will be tiny little things here and there, but the blueprint has been set. I’ve been in the program for 11 years with Coach Dantonio, and I know how we’ve done it and built it, and I think that’s the way it’s going to be.”

Dantonio’s formula is simple: play fundamentally-sound and physical defense with a ball-control offense. The Michigan State program has also been highly successful developing its talent despite lesser recruiting classes.

And Dantonio comes from the Tressel coaching tree so, yeah. Fundamentals. Not that that means 10-7 games. Michigan State has been a strong offense the last couple of years. Not afraid to score points and keep the the foot on the neck of teams.

Good topic, strange choice. Over at the ESPN.com ACC beat, they have an interesting series on position that needs improvement for each team.

Every team has issues to address this offseason, and this week, we’re taking a look at the most glaring holes for each ACC team and figuring out where they might find answers between now and the season opener.

Then they come to Pitt. It seems a no-brainer that it would be on the defense. The only question is which position? Cornerback, Defensive End, maybe Defensive Tackle?

No. Quarterback. Kind of.

This isn’t so much as a fix as it is a molding of Voytik into a player who, at the very least, is equally dangerous with his arm as his legs. Voytik was already showing signs of his maturation as a passer through the second half of last season, so there is reason to feel confident the Panthers will see Voytik jump into the upper half of the league’s quarterbacks. He also has the advantage of being a dual-threat option, which can help get him into an early rhythm and keep drives alive on third downs.

I’ve read through the piece several times. I still don’t get it. Basically the piece admits almost right away that Voytik noticeably improved during the season. Then when it comes to fix, admits it doesn’t need to be fixed, just Voytik needs to continue to improve.

Finally, the ACC schedule release. Justin nailed it well yesterday. I’m just going to point you to a solid behind-the-scenes piece from David Teel on the ESPN influence on the schedule.

ACC schools vowed in 2001 not to play Friday night football, long the domain of high schools. That changed in 2012, when the conference signed a contract with ESPN that increased rights fees by 30 percent and mandated three Friday games per season.

So in exchange for yet more ESPN money, the ACC agreed to Friday night games that improve the network’s programming. How much more money, we’ll never know.

Also understand that ESPN holds all the high cards here. The ACC desperately wants a cable channel dedicated to league sports, and the revenue such a project could potentially deliver. And that channel hinges on ESPN. So what the worldwide leader wants …

As I mentioned in a Tuesday post foreshadowing the Friday games at Tech and Virginia, props to the ACC for burdening the state schools in the same season, so as not to disadvantage one’s relationships with high schools. I wouldn’t be surprised to see similar pairings of Florida State and Miami, and North Carolina and N.C. State.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Friday night games and Pitt. Pitt has played them — away. Even back in the Big East. One thing Pederson definitely delivered on in a promise was that Pitt would never play a Friday night home game during the high school season. That has continued, but the question has now become, “but for how long?”

That is interesting above Friday night football. I never gave it much thought growing up in Pittsburgh. But, it is a huge focus for people in the boonies where I live now. High school sports are king.

on the ESPN.com article, it was written by ‘Florida St/ACC’ writer, Jared Shanker .. or in other words, he probably saw very little if any Pitt this year .. and may have based much on the games he may have seen .. Friday nite vs BC and Thursday nite vs VT, two wins where the defense didn’t look so bad.

Further, a look at the defensive stats seem to reveal that Pitt wasn’t a real bad team, unless you don’t take into account how they really didn’t play a good offense in the entire 1st half of the year.

Comment by wbb 01.30.15 @ 4:01 pm

Chas – you took a nice clean beer article and cluttered it up with sports – what were you thinking?

Comment by Complit 01.30.15 @ 4:13 pm

our defense stunk last year, though we did rack up respectable #s early in the year against weak opponents. weak schedule. Really, from the 2nd half of the Iowa game on, not good.

Who is going to be at the Voodoo Homestead on Saturday? Would be great to see an outpouring (ouch!) of Blatherites there.

Comment by PetePitt73 01.30.15 @ 4:35 pm

The most telling thing about the defensive performance in the 2nd half of the year is that the offense really started clicking in the 2nd half. They were gving the defense a chance to rest most games.

It seemed like the defense wasn’t giving the offense any chance to rest.

wbb – those tackles stats for our LBs I posted were wrong – I just went back and looked at the NCAA page and it was for games through 1/2/15 – I guess they haven’t updated for the bowl game… so your numbers were correct.

Could you post a link to the site you used – we should all be on the same page when discussing stats.

Any list of recruits visiting tomorrow. Should they be kept away from the Pete around noon?

Saw AD play in HS and knew he was special, but never dreamed he would be #1.

Comment by gc 01.30.15 @ 8:41 pm

This sounds crazy but Shawn Curtis’ explosiveness off the line reminds me of AD and Hugh Green.

AD exploded up the middle, Green from the outside as does Curtis. He also tackles very forcefully like Green. Never saw anyone but Green, well maybe Lawrence Taylor, grab a guy by the shoulders and throw him down like a rag doll.

Who knows if Curtis will be able to do it at the next level but his HUDL is fun to watch.

Nice article about Revis in the PG, only reason I might root for the Patriots, great to see another Pitt guy with a ring. The article was about Quips in the pros. Too bad we missed out on Ty Law, 15 years in the pros, many all-pro.

Anybody know who this SEC QB is that Chris Peak of Panther-Lair says Pitt is courting?

They definitely need some depth there. Pushing Voytik a little is not a bad thing. And, if he were to get injured, they’d be screwed.

Comment by Jim 01.30.15 @ 10:51 pm

I know that I usually join late ….so maybe this has been mentioned, but honestly, how the hell does a red neck, hick country bumpkin school like WVCC earn a top 10 to 20 program…. and deservedly so, and our urban campus with BE and ACC experience….and yet rarely get that blue chip stud? Having kids stick around for 4 to 5 yrs brought us nothing. Make the tournament….and underachieve. So sick of it. I realize I risk the Walt Harris/Wanny fear. Watch what we wish for. For all I hear about the wins, home court, number of tournaments, he could go anywhere, could be worse, turned down jobs, but honestly, with that resume, he rarely gets stud players. If he does sucker them to come here, they realize it is boring, they rarely play, get impatient and leave. I know it is dangerous to think the grass is greener, but if Blair was not in our backyard, we would not have sniffed the final 4. Pure luck. Things best change. 2mil a yr. earn it. All you hear is that Pitt can’t do this, that, this, that, that, stink here, there. Unacceptable at this stage w this resume and history. All teams lose kids, suspend kids, but we lose unexpectly in post play when all hands on deck. yea… I know great programs miss the ncaas, but they usually suffer through it w a final 4 or championship. When is this crap going to stop. Excited about next yr? With our luck, they will transfer or lose to Bradford in rd. 2.. Joining the ACC better bring us more than this. God I miss Chevy, Julius Jaron and company. They were the boys. Blair was a beast. Tough as nails and made us proud.

Comment by ck 01.30.15 @ 11:20 pm

I read that UW has lost 7 recruits from it’s 2015 class since the coaching change, and 2 more departures are likely. So, there’s that.

Pitt lost a few, but is adding a lot more.

Comment by Jim 01.31.15 @ 7:01 am

The QB is Nathan Peterman of Tennessee. He was a 4* recruit who hasn’t seen much time. If he is graduated he would be available immediately. RS Junior coming into the next football season. 6’2 and recruited by Mr. Chaney to UT.

Comment by tedsptman 01.31.15 @ 7:28 am

ck, WVU gets more than its share of blue-chips, probably more than Pitt, in both FB & BB. Yes, it is fascinating that kids would go there, but one thing they have better than Pitt is a larger, dedicated and rabid fanbase who will travel.

WVU is the state’s main school and, somewhat like PSU, there is nothing else to root for there. I both lived and worked in Morgantown, and while many of them are Steeler and Pirates fans, the talk in the fall is pretty much all ‘Eers … I also lived and worked (longer) in Pgh and as you all know, Pitt rarely dominates the area’s interest.

Comment by wbb 01.31.15 @ 7:30 am

one more thing … unlike Pitt, WVU will compensate its top assistants (recruiters), DC Tony Gibson nearly as much as Narduzzi did at MSU.

Comment by wbb 01.31.15 @ 7:42 am

Peterman probably explains why Chaney has spent some time in Tennessee the last couple of weeks. I believe he is visiting this weekend, which would indicate Pitt is at least in the running for him.

Comment by Jim 01.31.15 @ 7:50 am

here are Nathan Peterman stats at UT. As tedsptman wrote, he didn’t get much time; there is no reason to believe he can come in and take over as #1, but I guess may provide an experienced back-up

link to espn.go.com

Comment by wbb 01.31.15 @ 7:51 am

Do you really think WVU gets more blue chip recruits in basketball than Pitt, wbb? I know Pitt doesn’t get many, but they get the occasional top recruit. Maybe I haven’t looked closely enough at WVU recruiting, but I wasn’t aware they were getting any/many blue chips.

Also, their academic standards are lower than Pitt’s. I believe that helps recruiting in both sports.

Comment by Jim 01.31.15 @ 7:55 am

BTW, and this is just my opinion, if I’m Dinucci and Pitt gets another QB commit, I’m not so sure I wouldn’t flip back to Penn. Remember, he said it was a hard decision (understandably) as it was.

Comment by wbb 01.31.15 @ 7:58 am

Thanks for posting info on Peterman, wbb. I agree with you that they probably want him to push Voytik more than anything. And, it never hurts for a starting QB to have another experienced QB around even just as a sounding board. But, I suppose if they could get Peterman in, and he lights it up at camp, maybe they’d have a real competition. Experienced depth is a good thing.

Comment by Jim 01.31.15 @ 8:02 am

Peterman adds instant competition for Chad. He was a 4* (Rivals) and 3* on other sites out of FL (6A class). He played sparingly over two seasons at TN in college in the SEC (stats not anything to get excited about) and he performed well academically while at TN.

Chaney (I’m sure) is promising Peterman he will get a legitimate shot at the starting position. Chaney has to also be telling Chad, “we like how you progressed in your first year as a starter, you have the nod on day one, but we want to bring in competition. Chad, that is good for you and that is good for this team”.

Comment by Erie Express 01.31.15 @ 8:02 am

I don’t see another junior changing the situation at all for DiNucci. He already knows his chances of starting are slim to none for the next 2 yrs, minimum. He’s likely going to redshirt this season, which means Voytik and Peterman (if Pitt gets him) will be seniors next year, when DiNucci will be a redshirt freshman. His chief competition is Bertke and whoever they bring in next yr. I don’t think DiNucci is going anywhere.

Comment by Jim 01.31.15 @ 8:08 am

By the way he came on at the end of the year, I’m not so sure that Voytik needs pushed as opposed to the fact his only back-ups are an experience redshirt frosh, a walkon, and a natural frosh, all with no game experience.

Comment by wbb 01.31.15 @ 8:08 am

correction ..an ‘inexperienced’ reshirt frosh

Comment by wbb 01.31.15 @ 8:09 am

Jim, don’t underestimate Huggins’ recruiting ability. If you look at his commitment lists over the past handful of years, he always seems to get one 4-star (occasionally two) and a few 3-stars. He also has proven to be a good judge of talent.

Remember, in the early 90s, he took Cincy to the Final 4 with an unheralded team including Nick Van Exel (long time pro) and one other guy (forgot his name)that also made the NBA.

Comment by wbb 01.31.15 @ 8:16 am

I like Voytik a lot. I am surprised he got so much crap from some early this year, considering he was starting for the first time as a redshirt Soph. I think he steadily got better as the yr went on. I think he’ll be solid next yr, and very good 2 yrs from now.

But, I believe it is good for QBs to know the team has other options. And, experienced depth is also necessary in case of injury. From what I have seen of Voytik’s personality, he’ll welcome the challenge. This would be good for Pitt and Voytik, if Petetman signs.

Comment by Jim 01.31.15 @ 8:20 am

Kenyon Martin was the other guy from Cincy that was a long time pro. Dan Fortson (who played high school in Pgh) also played at Cincy but had a short NBA career. In the early to mid 90s, Huggy had one Final 4 and two Elite Eights, and overall, has more than double the amount of career wins than JD.

Of course, he has been at it much longer than JD but the point is not to underestimate Huggins

Comment by wbb 01.31.15 @ 8:27 am

I guess I always thought of Huggins as building programs through transfers and just plain good coaching ability, rather than top HS recruits. But, I admit I haven’t analyzed their recruiting classes so maybe they’re better than I thought. I know he brought in some guys with … baggage in their pasts (grades & other issues) at each stop. But, there’s no doubt he can coach.

Comment by Jim 01.31.15 @ 8:27 am

oh, he has done that …. but he also has gotten a handful of really good HS recruits

Comment by wbb 01.31.15 @ 8:33 am

just read that Van Exel had to go Jr college due to grades but as a Jr at Cincy, help lead them to Final 4, and as SR, went to Elite 8 with 27-5 record. Thus, no wonder Huggy will recruit JUCOs.

(also just read that Van Exel’s son was sentenced 60 yrs for murder in TX)

Comment by alcofan 01.31.15 @ 8:49 am

Huggins is a great coach. I think he’s under the radar nationally, especially since their move to the Big 12. He takes in some trouble kids and has had some failed experiments, but not many. Frankly I’m amazed at what he’s done with this year’s team.

The answer to the question, ‘How many 3’s will ND make?’:

As many as they want.

Comment by Frank MD 01.31.15 @ 9:28 am

Liquor? I didn’t even know her!

WV always over recruits and has pipelines into FL because they get their football players to take coaching jobs back in their original high schools. Gibson is dirty and has been since the Rich Rod days.

Pitt should not play ND,PSU and WVU in the same year. Sorry. That is not a good business model. We need to win games consistently first!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 01.31.15 @ 9:43 am

Chad is pretty much a motivated self-starter. He just needs a good coaching.chad’s main competition ishimself and continually wants to get better If we need another experience quarterback it would be in case I’m an injury to the starter. Chad has a golfer mentality… Good golfer mentality… You’re not playing the other guys you’re playing against yourself

We match up better against ND than a team with a strong inside game. ND’s coach Brey is in love with the 3 pt shot. Look for Pitt to defend the perimeter and try to force ND to drive to the basket.

Comment by HbgFrank 01.31.15 @ 9:50 am

Really getting hard to go to the Pete, when you know there is a 5% chance for victory. The pre-game hype, the music, the lighting, the introductions, just seem so overdone for this lackluster team.

It is hard to stay fired up when the other team goes on a run, we get behind by a dozen, and don’t have the ability to even put a scare into our opponents.

Even in the CBI year, you had the feeling that Gibbs could get hot and win one.

There is no one on this team that you feel could have a career day good enough to take over the game.

Another golf analogy, we are like a 20 handicap playing a scratch golfer getting no strokes. Even our career best round is not likely to get it done.

gc, haven’t been to the Pete in 6 years but was a season ticket holder for 4 years and hated it when they would turn the lights out for Pitt players intro … way over the top, even if other schools do it.

The NBA is even worse … which is just another indication that despite all the talent, they still prize style over substance

heading to the Pete. Not optimistic. ND -4.5 looks to be the juiciest bet I’ve seen in years.

My luck, I will put a little action on ND, Pitt will be down the whole game, will make a late run with the game already over and hit a half court shot at the buzzer to lose 72-68.

ND is about as bad of a matchup for pitt as it gets. They shoot the 3 as well as anybody and pitt is atrocious against the 3 defensively. Duke has the best center in college ball and he wasnt a factor, it was the 3 that killed pitt.

In regards to the NBA, it is so under appreciated here in pgh. There is BEAUTIFUL basketball being played every night.. The level of athleticism and skill those guys have is honestly mindblowing to me.

I plan on opening the bottle to celebrate our biggest win of the year. Sometimes, it’s when you play as opposed to who you play

Looked like Voodoo Homestead had an outstanding opening day, lines down the block, standing room only. H2P!

@Dan 72, Don’t feel too bad they surprised us all. You only missed by about 25 points. Lol

Headed down to Voodoo today, nice little venue.

Brought home a 12 pack and let me just say I was pleasantly surprised. Very good stuff, although watch out, it can hit hard! Wasn’t able to grab a bottle of the H2P, think it might only have been on tap. Next time.
