Strong Move on OC

I’ll be throwing up an open thread for the college football playoff championship game tonight. If for no other reason, everyone can wax rhapsodic over the analysis, insight and way Pat Narduzzi sells Pitt in the ESPN Film Room on ESPN2.

In the mean time, I guess we can pour over the news of Pitt’s new offensive coordinator. His name is Jim Chaney and he has been the Arkansas OC for the past two years.

Chaney spent the past two years with the Razorbacks, calling plays in their pro-style offense. This year, Arkansas ranked 26th in Division I-A with 218 rushing yards per game. He had two running backs surpass 1,000 yards in Jonathan Williams (1,190 yards) and Alex Collins (1,100 yards).

By the end of the season, Arkansas’ offense put up more than 30 points on top-30 defenses Texas and Mississippi. The Razorbacks scored 30 on the Rebels, who ended the season with Division I-A’s best scoring defense.

Arkansas finished the season 42nd in scoring offense, averaging 31.9 points per game.

Narduzzi said Saturday he prefers an offensive coordinator with play-calling experience, and Chaney fills that requirement. The move should also ensure a relatively smooth transition, as Chaney’s offense appears to be relatively similar to the one the Panthers ran under former coach Paul Chryst.

There were reportedly issues by the end of the year with Arkansas Head Coach Brett Bielema and Chaney. Chaney wanted a more balanced offensive attack, while Bielema wants to just run the football. So, from that standpoint the move for Chaney makes sense as HCPN has stated he does not want to meddle with the OC and play calling.

What also stands out is that Chaney was the highest paid assistant coach of the Razorbacks with a salary of $552,ooo and a $100,000 buyout — reportedly. This was the final year of his contract and while a new contract was being put together, it wasn’t yet signed.  Even if Pitt only matched the salary, that is a significant move by Pitt. Which, historically, has been loathe to loosen the purse strings for assistants.

Chaney is an experienced offensive coordinator who knows how to coach QBs.

Chaney’s appointment follows a trend by Narduzzi to fill his staff with veteran coaches. Chaney, 53, coordinated the offensive units at Purdue (1997-2005) and Tennessee (2009-12) before joining Arkansas coach Bret Bielema’s staff in 2013. At Purdue, Chaney tutored New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Not to mention Kyle Orton, who he helped make into a journeyman NFL QB.

When Chaney was at Purdue with Joe Tiller, the Boilermakers were actually relevant in the Big Ten. They also ran a spread oriented offense. Chaney is not strictly a spread guy — or else he’d never have been coaching at Arkansas under Bielema — but is comfortable using the players on hand to run the best possible offensive system.

This move likely answers the question as to whether there will be a QB coach. Unlikely as that would appear to be something Chaney is experienced and comfortable doing.

That leaves coaching positions open for WRs/TEs, O-line, D-line and D-backs.

WORST Fans to encounter on Game Day from one PITT Alums Perspective…

3)Notre Dame – Arrogant, Arrogant, Arrogant. They really do think they’re the ONLY TEAM playing that day.

2)West Virginia – They would be No. 1 except that you just can’t take them seriously because they just don’t know any better… and likely applied to Pitt but didn’t have the grades.

1)Penn State – Yes, they are ARROGANT. And EXTREMELY Preppy. But most of all they’re just ANNOYING!

Been to Wisconsin Games a few times. GREAT Atmosphere. The Students PARTEEEE like there is no tomorrow… Win or Lose.

As for the 5th Quarter… it would NEVER work at Pitt so long as the Games are “Off-Site” (to quote Gallagher).

Students are too worried about getting in the LONG LINES for the Bus Ride back to Oakland.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.12.15 @ 7:11 pm

@emel, can’t deny that you are right about the emotional stuff. Maybe since the campus stadium is not going to happen soon, they ought to have a huge Friday evening bonfire and pep rally for students and alumni to attend and hang out, followed by time in the local establishments, dinners at PAA, stuff like that to get some of the on-campus feelings back. Get people to come in the day before and have some activities available, tours of the Cathedral and new buildings. If you routinely brought in a few thousand alumni and families to join in this type of celebration, you might be able to generate more support for the on campus stadium.

The big thing is to be relevant in Pittsburgh you have to be a winner. If you can start averaging over 50,000 per game a stadium may make sense. Otherwise we need a billionaire that wants to put his/her name on something.

Check it out… it’s official according to Twitter! haha.

Harley is at PITT and he definitely gets it, in terms of Swag and Script!

My answer, show up three hours prior to game time in Oakland. Go walk up Cardiac Hill, check out merchandise at Peterson Event Center shop, go back down, follow that up with a visit to the Pitt store, meander through the Student Union, pause for a picture at the Panther statue on their lawn then checkout the Cathedral of Learning. After all of that is accomplished, hit the Dirty O for a dog and a pile of fries.

So then you are all reconnected with the University prior to going over to the North Shore for their adequate parking, multiple bars and restaurants, various venues to tailgate, and great panoramas of the city’s skyline, not to mention the Rivers Casino and museums, now to watch Pitt win a football game.

And the KEY word to ALL of the above? Just win baby, WIN!

Alex Hornibrook has de-committed from Pitt

Comment by Griogar 01.12.15 @ 7:30 pm

A campus stadium would be amazing. Unfortunately SP set us down a path that makes it very unlikely. If anything, Pitt will have to return to their glory days to build even a little momentum. Each year that passes makes it more expensive and less attainable. That’s just the reality. First, let’s become good again. Then we can talk.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 01.12.15 @ 7:32 pm

Tossing… Good perspective.

But you still never know. Gallagher could always have a CHANGE of Heart. If he has one. jk

Comment by PittofDreams 01.12.15 @ 7:40 pm

back to only 2 Qbs on schollies … thus, the Jacquan Davidson move is a must

Comment by wbb 01.12.15 @ 7:44 pm

I think losing Hornibrook is a plus. I’m so tired of taking QBs that no one else wants. He didn’t belong playing at this level anyway. It frees up a scholarship for someone who actually belongs playing QB at a P5 school. I bet Chaney called him, told him he watched his take, and that he had dim future so it was best he find another place. It’s not a coincidence that it’s the day after Chaney was named, and Chaney has legit pedigree with QBs, even better than Chrysts.

Voytik, backed up Bertke, backed up Davidson, backed up by Repishack. We’ll be fine.

Comment by PittHW 01.12.15 @ 7:47 pm

Voytik and Bertke with a possible sighting of Davidson who ran the scout team as QB last year was all we were going to see next year anyway. This just gives Chaney another scholarship to use for an actual QB prospect with the cost of a scholarship.

Comment by PittHW 01.12.15 @ 7:54 pm

worth* the cost

Comment by PittHW 01.12.15 @ 7:55 pm

So Hornibrook didn’t like the choice of the OC… that’s what he was waiting for and that’s his opinion. He acted on it but I hate to see him go. We are much in the same situation were were right after the last game of the 2011 season with Sunseri coming up on his last year. That left us with only FR Voytik and FR Anderson behind him which is why Chryst reached out to Savage to come to PITT. Then we saw Savage as the starter and CV and TA the be untested backups.

In ’15 we’ll have Voytik and untested Bertke, Repischak and Davidson. I say offer a scholarship to Repischak ASAP and get him rotating into the practices from day one of spring practice – if for no other reason than to get the others on the two deep used to him calling signals back there.

I guess Davidson is fine for a 3rd/4th string guy…link to pittsburghpanthers.com

Comment by Reed 01.12.15 @ 7:58 pm

Don’t rule out KJ Hill, John O’Korn or someone like that coming in too. I just don’t think Hornibrook was ever, ever going to see the field this year anyway, so it really isn’t a loss. He would’ve been at best the 5th option. Chaney will bring in 2 QBs in the next two classes. And they will be a lot better thany anyone Chrsyt brought in. In the short term this might be uncomfortable, but long term this is a big win.

Comment by PittHW 01.12.15 @ 8:05 pm

both Chryst and Narduzzi have the same criteria for recruiting…

They want kids that want to be here…. good luck to the young man. we will be fine and who knows who the new coaching staff might have lined up.

They may not want the pure pocket passer either…

Check out the Nard Dog on national TV with his Pitt Swag…. Outstanding!

Ohio State filling 70% of the stadium, you gotta respect that.

Comment by gc 01.12.15 @ 8:27 pm

Hornibrook was the third choice after Malzone and Shurmur. Who knows how many years he would be riding the pines. Coach Duzz knows this is a priority.

Comment by pd 01.12.15 @ 8:28 pm

Speaking of Shurmur, man I hope they make a late push for him.

Comment by PittHW 01.12.15 @ 8:32 pm

Hornibrook signed with Wisconsin already. Paulie Potato Poacher…

Comment by Erie Express 01.12.15 @ 9:07 pm

hey, that’s who he committed to. He my have been waiting to see if Rudolph was going to stay

Comment by wbb 01.12.15 @ 9:11 pm

Hornibrook received an offer from new head coach Paul Chryst after he took the Badgers’ job in December and de-committed from the Panthers just moments ago.

The three-star signal caller will join Austin Kafentzis, who arrived on campus Sunday, as the quarterbacks in Wisconsin’s 2015 recruiting class. The Badgers are also currently involved with Houston transfer John O’Korn.

Hornibrook committed to Pittsburgh in June over Rutgers, UConn, and others. After Chryst left Pittsburgh for Wisconsin, Hornibrook began looking into Wisconsin’s admissions and got the clearance to commit and will enroll early.

The nation’s No. 62 ranked pro-style quarterback.

Hornibrook is Wisconsin’s 26th commitment in the class of 2015.

Funny how X HCPC suddenly attracts QB’s – three this year for Wisconsin – he brought in one in three years for Pitt. Yea, that sounds about right.

We get the old saying “nice guys finish last”. BA says “no more Mr. nice guy”. hahahahaha

Comment by Erie Express 01.12.15 @ 9:19 pm

Kraig Howe will be next leaving us 10 whole commits with three weeks till LOI day. Coach Duzz better work fast.

Comment by pd 01.12.15 @ 9:30 pm

Oregon missing their 2 starting WR’s. Less options for Mariota

Comment by Emel 01.12.15 @ 9:42 pm

Apparently kids today need reminded that Pitt has produced one of the all-time NFL greats in Dan Marino.

Who is f*ck has Wisconsin produced ?

(and don’t say Russell NC State Wilson)

Comment by Emel 01.12.15 @ 9:43 pm

ESPN2, when they have the dual screens, should have the game on the larger screen, with the coaches in the smaller screen.

What is wrong with these people ?

I mean I like the commentary but I want to see the game .

Comment by Emel 01.12.15 @ 9:47 pm

Oh and the black guy from 3 win Vanderbilt is talking way toooooo much.

There…….my rants are done for awhile.

Comment by Emel 01.12.15 @ 9:50 pm

@ pd – Coach Duzz is on ESPN commenting on the NC game. He has a plan to bring in recruits, trust him. He now has access to Arkansas’ recruits, MSU & FIU recruiting data. My guess is he brings in the max of 25 and sorts out who stays after the Spring practices.

Is the max # of recruits you can take in one year 25?

Comment by Erie Express 01.12.15 @ 9:53 pm

Erie, yeah I know been watching him and he is much more impressive than Chryst. Just not a lot of time. We have ZERO D-LINEMAN and ONE LB in this class so far, the two biggest area of need.

Comment by pd 01.12.15 @ 10:12 pm

Howe’s offer was pulled.

Comment by markp 01.12.15 @ 10:18 pm

Markp, that I did not know.

Comment by pd 01.12.15 @ 10:42 pm

I’m sure PN and his staff will be chasing DL, LB, and maybe a QB as soon as Thursday comes

Comment by markp 01.12.15 @ 10:49 pm

I’m impressed if Howe’s offer was pulled. That tells me that Pitt is about to establish itself as a destination place. The Pitt staff is saying to Howe & other committed recruits, don’t entertain others right now – we have a plan to get a good class together before LOI signing day – you stray, you pay by lossing your offer. Other recruits with better talent want to come play at Pitt and we need your scholorship now – sorry.

I love it!

HTP – the Panther pride is coming back from the gory days.

Comment by Erie Express 01.13.15 @ 6:52 am

to much hate going on here. I think we should list favorite teams:
Pitt
Whoever plays WVU
Whoever plays PSU
Whoever plays ND

Share the love of favorites!!!!!!

Comment by WarrenPAnther 01.13.15 @ 8:09 am

My bad – it was Dowdy’s not Howe’s offer – sorry – poor reporting!

Comment by markp 01.13.15 @ 8:52 am

So… here’s something that’s been eating at me, and I post it here not in jest or angst but actual curiosity and concern.

Let’s assume for a moment that this coach and this staff actually does turn this abomination around. It’s possible, and for the first time in a long time I don’t feel like I’m reading a list of names and struggling to figure out who they are and why we wanted them. If, and I do mean IF these guys are able to make Pitt football relevant again, can we safely assume that over the last 30 years it’s been MONEY that has held us back???

I know people talk about “the curse” and what it has meant for Pitt football, but I get a little queasy when I ponder the fact that the team was doomed to struggle through not just mediocrity but outright embarrassment because the University administration wasn’t willing to write a check large enough to fix it correctly. It just doesn’t sit well with me at all. Of course, we can’t just assume that if Wanny, or Harris, or Foge, or ANYONE over the past 30 years would have been more successful with deeper pockets, but we also can’t assume it they wouldn’t have been. What if Wanny was given a fat assistant and recruiting budget? Could he have “turned the corner”. It would have only taken a couple more wins…. but then it seems like it’s always been “a couple more wins”.

If it wasn’t the money, then we’re left with the incompetence of the administration from the chancellor on down. We can conclude form the results we saw that for Nordenberg, excellence WAS selective as long as he had SOMETHING to hang his hat on, be it academics, basketball, or whatever.

But still… I come back to money. Was it really MONEY that has keep us in this pathetic stasis for all the years? The unwillingness to invest further because you’ve reach a plateau of “not quite/just good enough”?

I guess time will tell, but to me, success will be a damning indictment of the previous administration either way. They were either too cheap, too stupid, to arrogant, or a combination of all three to solve the problems. Although it will offend some (many) here, I’m glad I never gave the University one thin dime during the Peterson/Nordenberg years – I had my reasons beyond athletics but they played a roll without question. Time will tell whether or not I’m willing to open MY checkbook now that Pitt is apparently opening theirs….

Comment by thestumper 01.13.15 @ 9:08 am

Pitt’s problem over the years is it has been Schizophrenic about football they had coaches like Sutherland and Warner who they forced out because they wanted to be more cerebral and get into the big 10 or deemphisize football( get that it is true read 100 years of Pitt football). Then they got the Ivy League bug 2x in the 30’s and 50’s under two different Chancelors. Both times football suffered. We also suffered from two AD’s that failed big time. Posvar stayed too long after Majors I and Sherrill he left things slide .He was followed by Bozik who was another Peterson, glad hander etc who totally neglected football. Pederson could hardly make things worse. No long term goal of top quality football. Other D1 schools moved forward we got ups and downs and no change. Hopefully this has finally changed.I am too old to keep waiting.
