Clemson dreams of being Pitt when it comes to basketball.
This will be the 400th Pitt game for Coach Jamie Dixon, as the man in charge. It is also, potentially, his 300th win. There may be some talk of that.
Dixon is 15 games into his 12th season as Pitt’s coach. The Panthers are 11-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
“A lot of people recognize and talk about it, but I don’t give it a lot of thought, to be honest with you,” Dixon said. “When I sit down and look at it, I might think a little differently — the numbers.
“As I think about it now, I’m just thankful I’ve been able to coach at the university that many years. It does speak to being at a place a long time.”
The emphasis has been on the speed at which it has been accomplished or in comparison to how long it took other coaches to reach 300.
I know the counter arguments. A bigger schedule than a lot of coaches had in the 70s and 80s. The idea that Dixon has his numbers padded by a weak non-con (as if other coaches can’t make that claim).
Here’s what you really need to know. Of the 299 wins Coach Dixon has accumulated at Pitt, over half have come in regular season conference play (127), conference tournaments (13) and the NCAA Tournament (13). That’s what makes — hopefully reaching 300 wins today so impressive to me.
It’s a nooner on Root Sports locally. Plenty of other RSN affiliates.
Absolutely love the hire of Chaney. College football is set up for high scoring offenses to succeed. NardZ and Chaney know how to do that big time. Voytek may have seen his last game at QB for Pitt. To play for Chaney you have to be able to make all the throws. Word is he is bringing an a JC QB with him.
For those of you too young to remember, this is exactly what it felt like when we hired Majors!
Hail to Pitt! Love affair with Gallagher goes on!
Whatever works for the masses. I know a lot of guys on here live out of state, so it makes it tough. Me personally, I live in Crafton and go to every game, so day and logistics not an issue for me…
Hail to Pitt!
My bad. thought it was other Dan.
Any way, was a great idea then, and even better now with new found optimism.
We should try to make it happen..
On the coaches, we have now taken coaches from MSU, FIU, ARK, ND, and MD. Not bad.
WR Michael Smith
RB Joel Thomas
just rumor… wonder how good they are?
Looks like Narduzzi was reading The Blather and went out and hired an OC. I have no idea how good or bad any of these hires are because I don’t pay any attention to anyone who isn’t on PITT’s staff. His resume’ seems good though and I’m glad Narduzzi has both the OC & DC in place before the recruiting visits commence again. Chaney sounds like a good experienced guy though.
BTW – let’s don’t kid ourselves that phone calls and texts to recruit has anything like the effect going into a recruits home and meeting the parents and/or grandparents in person for a long conversation.Getting into the house is a very important step to recruit, and now to keep the recruits we have. These kids get hundreds of email, texts and calls daily – face time is what seals the deal. Having both the HC and the OC sitting in the dining room is twice as effective getting an WR / RB / QB.
Turns out Chaney, Smith and Thomas only assistant coaches not extended at Arkansas… RB coach perhaps more uncertain but buzz more than just Chaney coming…
Ammo to follow up on what @Reed just stated needs to be done!
Here is his OC record at 3 P5 schools. Not terribly better than 6 and 6 as far as the eye can see. Time will tell.
1997 9 3
1998 9 4
1999 7 5
2000 8 4
2001 6 6
2002 7 6
2003 9 4
2004 7 5
2005 5 6
2009 7 6
2010 6 7
2011 6 7
2012 5 7
2013 3 9
2014 7 6
Total 101 85
It was just the opposite for HCPN where ne needed to hire an accomplished offensive coordinator.
Chaney may not be perfect hire but he has sufficient experience; Matt House certainly did not.
Now, you can try to justify PC’s hire that House was being groomed to be the DC, but consider the following:
– just how did that work out?
– what good did that do to guys like Todd Thomas who was looked on a few years ago as a prosepct? I saw very little growth on the defensive side of the ball the last couple of years.
– Matt House now apears to be on the outside looking in, unemployed with a less than attractive resume. PC should have insisted to his new boss that House needed to be brought in, since it was PC that agreed to hire hime when he wasn’t qualified, but of course, no backbone Paulie backed down to BA.
This kind of reminds me of Darrell Porter, a promising assistant coach, who was hired as HC way before he was ready to assume a position of that magnitude. He failed and the last I heard of him, he was assisting Joey David, in high school.
I kind of hope Matt catches on somewhere. He certainly shouldn’t have been hired as OC, but he deserves employment somewhere.
