(Note: This is a follow up article to the topic of discussion we all have been having about James Conner playing on defense)
In a separate post’s comment section our long-time commenter Wbb and I have been bandying back and forth about the coaching staff’s experiment of planning to play SO James Conner at Defensive End at certain times this season. This has been an interesting and contested topic of conversation since the 2014 Spring Practices when the move was semi-formalized and talked about publicly. We PITT fans will remember that Conner played a few downs on defense during the Bowling Green bowl game where he got in but had no tackles. Let’s look at where the staff stands on that now and what we might see in the future.
In a nutshell the staff’s intent of having Conner play DE was to insert him on defense during situation specific needs, mostly 3rd down passing plays, where he could use his size (6’2″ & 250 lbs), his speed (4.4) and his strength to rush the QB. This isn’t that farfetched as Conner played DE very well while at McDowell High School in Erie, PA. Supposedly he was recruited by PITT to play that DE position, although I don’t believe that. Just because a recruiting site labels a player “DE” doesn’t mean that’s what he is.
The fact that Conner ran for 1,680 yards and 21 touchdowns on 155 carries, an impressive 10.8 yards per carry, his senior year at McDowell was the factor in Chryst’s decision to place Connor at RB as soon as Conner set foot on campus and to keep him there in the backfield all of last season. Personally, I think Conner was always targeted to be Chryst’s ‘Big Back’, like those he had at Wisconsin, all along.
So, the 2014 spring camp starts and the “Connor Conundrum”, the issue of why, how and when Conner will play on defense, begins to take a life of its own. An interesting quote from that linked article has to do with a conversation after a workout at the Southside facility between Steelers’ LB Lawrence Timmons and Conner:
“There’s also a school of thought that he would be better on defense than on offense. That’s what Timmons thinks, anyway. “He told me (last year) I should be playing defense,” Conner told the Tribune-Review. “I kind of laughed it off, but it definitely stuck with me. I put heavy thought to that.” (Note: hope he listens to his actual coaches more than the Steeler guys)
Anyway, the local and national media jumped on the interesting story of a PITT player seeing the field on both offense and defense in the same game and same season. From there the always mega-involved PITT fans took things to new heights in speculation, as we are wont to do.
Soon it wasn’t enough for the fans or some media reporters that Conner would play DE in specific spots but now their thoughts were “Hell, if we are going to do it let’s go all the way and move him full time”. Yes, this was a rampant discussion on the message boards and blogs as well as some local articles. There were a few reasons for this idea come about.
First was that PITT had just recruited a four star running back out of Notre Dame’s backyard in Chris James. James was a real ‘get’ as the 22nd nationally rated RB and was recruited by 11 other FBS schools, yet chose to attend PITT. All of a sudden, and with visions of Tony Dorsett, LeSean McCoy and Dion Lewis’ freshman years of RB superstardom flashing in their heads, some media and fans wanted the full time move because James was, by golly, going to burst onto the scene like a supernova which would allow Conner the switch to defense they assumed the staff wanted to happen.
Secondly, going into the camp and the season we really did looked barren at DE. rsSR Dave Durham wasn’t expected to do much based on his average play in 2013, rsJR Ejuan Price was lost for the season before fall camp started, SO Shakir Soto had some experience but was really untested as a starter and our two-deep kids, FR Rori Blair and rsFR Luke MacLean had no playing experience at the college level at all. All the above was a valid concern and at the time was an unanswered question mark as to how well the DE unit would produce.
That was the setup moving into the opening game of the 2014 season when PITT hosted Delaware at Heinz Field. Everyone kept looking to see if Conner was in on defense on 3rd down plays and it didn’t happen. Looking back at how the game unfolded, or exploded in PITT’s 62-0 favor as it were, there was never a time that either Conner was needed or that the staff wanted to see him at DE. Conner played one half at RB and sat out the second half all together. Totally understandable.
The following game against a much more competitive FBS and ACC opponent Boston College was expected to be much closer and to have situations where Conner’s skills would be needed on defense for 3rd down plays. As the game progressed there were multiple opportunities for the staff to use Conner as advertised. In the first half alone, when the game was still a close fought battle, this is what we saw when BC was in possession of the ball:
In the first half of the game with the score:
7-3 PITT; 3rd & 3, 3rd & 6 and 3rd & 10 – No Conner.
10-7 PITT; 3rd & 2, and 3rd & 7 – No Conner.
13-7 PITT; 3rd & 7, 3rd and 12 and 3rd & 17 – No Conner.
See a trend here? Correct me if I’m wrong but what better time would there be for Conner to play “…DE, when we need him…” if it isn’t in a close game against an ACC opponent on their home turf? Really Paul? Hey, Coach Palumbo – were they pulling your chain or what?
How are 3rd & 10 with only a four point lead or 3rd & 12 with only a six point lead not the appropriate time? Of course it is with one exception and that is if your current four DEs are playing so well the move isn’t necessary, just as Chryst explained was the case after the game.
Which leads me to believe that this whole issue doesn’t actually revolve around how skillful Conner is on both sides of the ball but really only on how well our DE two deep lids are producing playing (two out of our five sacks so far). I have no real problem with that except for the same considerations I have with Boyd returning punts unless it is absolutely necessary.
If it were up to me as his RB coach I’d sit down Conner this evening and tell him that the odds are against his having to play both ways and If the opportunity presents itself at a later time we’ll revisit the option, but right now it’s his job to concentrate on the job he gets paid to do and that is run the ball like a crazed bull.
Tomorrow’s game will be interesting to watch for a number of reasons but if Conner is forced to play because we need him then we are in a world of hurt. But who knows – he may get some PT on defense just to whet his appetite.
On a completely different note – watch this video. It is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time.
Presently, in contrast however, all of a sudden, the University of Pittsburgh is, supposedly, in the hunt for being a conference contender and possesses a Heisman running back candidate. P L E A S E!?
Can we just play football and let things pan out in their own good time?
My spin on tomorrow, Conner runs for over 200 yards and he actually does become an actual blip on the national scene, but I like coach Chryst’s attitude, “control the controllables” and let the chips fall where they may.
One game at a time and just take care of business tomorrow.
I’m really indifferent about Connor at DE. A number of factors, many of which Reed stated, will determine whether he gets snaps at DE. Another factor which may have played a role in the BC game was the number of times Connor ran the ball. He was pretty gased in the 4th so that could have played a role. He was so gased I thought James or Bennett could have used a few more carries.
the first three are 4 -star recruits. (Note, only one RB on the field at one time)
none are 4-star recruits
Bowden dropped the spring draw on us trapping Ricky and Hugh once they penetrated the FSU offensive line and Rohn Stark punted 7 times for a 48.1 average. Three Marino interceptions and four fumbles later the most talented college football team lost a game, a season and a NC 36- 22. I recall a deluge pouring down the stadium steps of Doak and feeling sick! Underestimate NO ONE! Pound FIU! Hail to Pitt! UPone
Yet that hasn’t happened. Personally, I think that Conner would be another Jabaal Sheard (without the dwarf tossing habit) if he was moved to DE on a permanent basis where he could channel all his talents to that position and have directed DE coaching available to him.
But why do that or even honestly contemplate it? My opinion is that we may just have the next Sheard/Romeus combo onboard with Blair and Maclean once they get a taste of blood at that DE position. Soto is around for another year in 2015 and Blair will be a SO and MacLean will be a rsSO so it isn’t like we are going begging for DEs next season.
We also have talent with Devon Cook as the #5 DE. He played well for us in the past and showed some real talent at the DE position last year with three tackles and a TFL in three games as a back-up before getting hurt. Think about that. Cook has bounced back from the ’13 injury yet our two freshman DEs have played their way past him on the depth chart. It wasn’t because Cook got worse but because the two young kids kicked ass in the fall camp and jumped up and won the two-deep slots.
Steve1 – according to the coaching staff Conner hasn’t played defense “because he hasn’t been needed”… yet if any time we needed real skill at DE against BC it was those 3rd down plays in the close first half I listed above. So – Conner hasn’t been needed because our DEs are doing a pretty damn good job without him and he’s WAYYYY more valuable toting the rock as they say.
True Freshman RB that rushes for 2 TDs in the opening game of the season and looks good doing it – Chris James. Conner’s outstanding performance is the only reason that CJ remains our “star” Freshman RB in waiting.
Another reason Conner’s services have not been required at DE – Luke MacLean, although he has not been given much of an opportunity to gain experience with his lack of playing time in our first two contests. I remain committed to my opinion that he is a good one at DE. He was also a wrestler in HS, that experience transfers over well to playing DE. It aids in developing both hand and footwork at that position. Hoping to see #55 on the field today a lot spelling the starters at DE
Given Connor’s performance to date why would anyone consider playing him at DE? The coaches wore him out
against BC…..did anyone else notice? Long season ahead
with opponents building game plans to stop him. Playing D
too much to ask of this kid.
2) yes I was referencing the star rating system. Once again, next year we will have for ONE position, three 4-star RBs and three 3-star positions. I agree that none of them may be as good as Conner, but on the other hand, maybe one f them will be a home run hitter that can score a TD on 50+ yards run against a good team
3) for the umpteenth time, I didn’t start the argument. All of a sudden, our best RB was practicing at DE for the bowl game and continues to practice there. Conner says himself his future is at defense, his high school coach said he could be the next Jabaal Sheard (and he said that this past summer!)
2 coaches this past week said that we will probably need him at DE later in the year despite all he has done at RB this year. What part of this do you not understand that the coaches think he is their best past rusher?
Conner at RB is best for Pitt. Pitt has talent at DE and Conner is a proven stud at RB.
The average pay for DE in the NFL is $2.6 million per year, second only to QBs. The average pay for RB is $1.5 million, with a very short shelf life.
The number one standard for any manager, anytime, anywhere, is SURVIVAL. For Chryst to survive he must win. He must obviously make his decisions based on which course gives him the best chance of winning. Conner should stay at RB until someone better is available.
At the most I see the coaches feel he can contribute there if needed but in no way do I see that they think he’s the best. that’s a real reach IMO.
As far as him being too valuable to move off offense – don’t forget that returning this year with Conner was Isaac Bennett who did just as well as Conner did last season. Bennett had two yards less than Conner (799 to 797), one less TD and he also had a 4.7 ypc average which is excellent. PITT fans tend to forget just how productive Bennett was last year. Give him 25+ carries a game behind this OL we have now and he’d be racking up the yards also. Which would free up Conner for a move to defense.
Believe me, if Conner was so much better than Durham and Soto and was so badly needed at DE they would have put him there right off the bat and gone with Bennett as RB1. In no way is Conner the ONLY good option we have at RB, regardless of how well he’s playing now.
No, In camp the DEs played very well and thus tamped down all the Conner switching talk. They continue to play well and thus Conner isn’t needed.
I assure you that if he was just an above average DE, they wouldn’t be saying that, or still having him practice on DE … this is merely common sense.
H2P!!!
