The Day Before

Filed under: Football — Chas @ 1:49 pm

So, we finally bit the bullet and added a second HDTV in our house. We have a giant HDTV projector in the basement, so a second HDTV was a low priority. The old analog was fine for the kids and in the background. But we finally gave in to  some more rampant consumerism.

It arrived in the evening. I set that thing set up and find about half the channels not coming through. Most glaring being most of the sports channels including ESPN. As I’m trying to figure it out, the wife starts checking around online and suspects that it to be the old and jury-rigged coaxial cables left in place from the previous owner (each line is a collection of 3-foot cables put together and then wrapped in electrical tape). Sure, why not.

Grumbling I spent the $37 for two 25-foot quad strength (supposedly better for HDTV) coax at a store, while grimly noting a pair of equal quality cables sell for $19 on Amazon. But of course there was no way I’m allowed to wait the two days of shipping on that.

A couple more hours of trying to get the old cables out of the wall and through narrow holes to get it to the connections in the basement. Then stringing the new ones through. Success (and a new, albeit discreet, hole in the floor). Turn on the TV, and the same bleeping problem. Another half-hour of trying to figure this out when on a frustrated whim I check the downstairs receiver. Attached to the back of the coax leading into DirecTV box are a couple of DirecTV adapter/filter/converter/condom-things. Take them off the downstairs box and slap them on the upstairs receiver. Yup. Now it works.

Now I have to get DirecTV to give me these stupid things (or I could just order them from Amazon for $10). I know it’s just poor planning on my part not to do this sooner. A bit of a pain for tonight and Sunday and Monday. But it won’t matter for tomorrow.

Tomorrow the only stress is getting up before sunrise to hit the road. The first drive to Pittsburgh for the start of college football season.

Oh, how I have missed that 145 mile commute. The car pre-loaded. Trying to stumble around without much light or waking anyone up as I make my escape. The morning gloom that deepens each week as fall approaches.

Grabbing the meh, but necessary, triple-shot of espresso at a turnpike Starbucks roughly 44 miles into the trip. The pattern, the rhythm all so familiar after 16 years of doing this drive some six times a year from the end of August to the beginning of December.

So much has changed. The cars I drive (or nursed along), the speed limits, way the tolls are paid, the stadium, the spot where my friends and I meet. The nature of the tailgate has changed as we have hit middle-age. The frozen burger patties give way to better quality food. The Yuengling gives way to Penn Brewing, Lagunitas, Troegs and solid bourbon choices.

Yet so much remains the same. So much feels like it did when we all found ourselves using the football games as a chance to annually reconnect. See each other and have a bit of fun. And yes, watch Pitt football.

Whatever else this season brings, I always remain grateful for the start of the season and making those trips.

Hail to Pitt.

Hail to Chas.
Hail to Pitt!

Why didn’t you carry the new tv downstairs to see if it was the cables before replacing the old ones?

Comment by Mike 08.29.14 @ 2:36 pm

Mike

1) I’m an idiot.
2) the whole set-up for the projector is convoluted (the set-up predates moving into the house) and disconnecting enough cords to test down there would have been a mess.

Comment by Chas 08.29.14 @ 4:26 pm

Ditto on that Caw!

Comment by longsufferingpittfan 08.29.14 @ 3:15 pm

You have such a perfect life. When I grow up I want to be just like you!

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.29.14 @ 6:25 pm

Doesn’t look like I can get the game on TV in Lancaster, PA and I get 900 chanels! Any suggestions?

Comment by Dishman 08.29.14 @ 7:56 pm

Doc, it’s not your fault. It’s not your fault.

IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT!

(hugs)

Comment by steve1 08.29.14 @ 7:58 pm

Forget cable tv, Dish. The issue is whether

1) you purchased high speed internet service, and

2) that service includes ESPN3

If yes to both, then turn on your computer

Fair enough Chas

CAA Conference member Villanova is currently giving Syracuse(at their house, no less) all that they can handle at 14-17 Syracuse in the 4th Q.

FIRST, Always respect your opponent!

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.29.14 @ 9:12 pm

The Nova kicker misses a chip shot FG for the win with 14 seconds left. Game goes to OT tied at 17. And that my friends is why they play the games!

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.29.14 @ 9:50 pm

Doc – Must be a slow night if you are relegated to watching that nonsense. Haha. I guess football is football. Haha. Im watching a New Wizard of Oz remake with my 4 year old. Haha

Comment by Upittbaseball 08.29.14 @ 10:03 pm

Syracuse vs Villanova game goes to 2nd OT after both squads score FGs in the 1st OT!

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.29.14 @ 10:04 pm

A good college football game is a good college football game irrespective of the competitors, Upittbaseball!

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.29.14 @ 10:06 pm

Couldn’t be more excited for tomorrow! Even though I’ll be in full media blackout mode until after the game is actually played. (Work commitment) Any way…

Cautiously optimistic we may win a few more games this year… But even if we don’t, it’s going to be fun watching it unfold. For better or worse, there’s nothing better than Pitt football!

Can’t thank Chas and Reed enough for giving us so much to keep us up to speed during the off season… You’ve been too generous with your time… We’re all grateful.

Now let’s get it on!!! H2P! Talk to you guys tomorrow night!

Comment by Pitt2Cali 08.29.14 @ 10:14 pm

Villanova holds Syracuse fakes a FG in 2nd OT and scores the TD on a pass! WOW!

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.29.14 @ 10:14 pm

Syracuse faked it and scored the TD

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.29.14 @ 10:15 pm

Villanova answers with their own TD in 2nd OT but goes for the win with 2 point conversion. It fails! Syracuse wins. The Wildcats played large!

I sure hope that all of the Delaware Blue Hen football players are fast asleep in their beds at their hotel in Pittsburgh right now, because I wouldn’t want any of them getting inspiration from the way that their CAA Nova Wildcat brotheran played tonight.

Lesson learned? Always respect your opponent.

What a great game!

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.29.14 @ 10:24 pm

Came up and took in the Bucco game this evening before heading over to the stadium early for the opener. I’m looking for us to win big. 42-10. Breakfast at Bettis’s. Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Panther Fan in Hoopieland 08.29.14 @ 10:32 pm

@ Dr. Tom – too late to respect your opponent. It’s all in the preparation. If you prepped with no respect, you will play with no respect. Football is such an emotional game. You either have it or you don’t. That is why I support our guy PC. He signs kids that love football first, want to be at Pitt second and have talent.

Interesting in Ohio last night. Anthony McKee started at Safety. Pitt is looking at him as an OLB.

Carpe’ Blue Hens.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 08.30.14 @ 7:23 am

Ugh my internet isn’t good enough to watch it online and when I tried to buy a ticket online at 8am this morning I got an error and now the option to buy tickets for the Delaware game is gone. Good job boys in the ticketing department.

Comment by Patric 08.30.14 @ 7:34 am

Borrowing a quote from the Chick-fil-A cows, “Eat mor chicken.”

Hoping our defense brings that attitude against the hens.

Go Pitt!

Gonna be a wild day on the Olde North Side, forget that North Shore baloney. Pitt, Pirates and Ribfest.

91 degrees fahrenheit, great day to throw down a massive amount of cold ones.

The bonfire was well attended by students, should be a good turnout today. Heading down at 10:00.

Hoping to see a well coached team.

Comment by gc 08.30.14 @ 7:42 am

Meat and Potatoes for brunch and a couple toddies, then the beautiful walk over the Clemente Bridge and along the Allegheny over to the stadium. gc – I second your sentiment: well-coached would do it for me.

Comment by Iron Duke 08.30.14 @ 7:54 am

PSU offense and defense look solid. Yes playing UCF without Bortles but better than I expected. Come up Panthers!! Its time to get better this year. 8 wins is the goal.

Comment by Upittbaseball 08.30.14 @ 7:59 am

Patric,
Hope you can go. There should be tickets for purchase at the box office or for sure a kind Pitt fan with an extra ticket(s). I’ve actually had people give me their extra ticket or sell them to me cheap. The worst you would do is pay ticket price. Good luck and enjoy the game!

Comment by Pittman4ever 08.30.14 @ 8:06 am

There are always tickets available. Just go to the stadium (or bars) People (not Scalpers) will give them to you or sell them cheap. No excuse for staying home and watching on the net. Except as a last resort.

Comment by gc 08.30.14 @ 8:12 am

Stubhub.com has digital downloaded tickets for most games. If you can get to a printer, go that route.

Comment by PittHW 08.30.14 @ 8:53 am

Some facts as seen through the eyes of Dr. Tom.

Even in Dublin, Penn state SUCKS.

Voytik will prove to be a gamer.

Ribfest smells even better than it tastes!

Pitt covers the spread at 20, bearly.

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.30.14 @ 8:54 am

OK, off to pregame it with a few bloody marys prior to game time. For those of you not taking in the game at Heinz today in person, too bad. Great weather, Ribfest smoke filling the air, preseason optimism running rampant. Great times to be had but now the prognostications, opinions, gut feelings, in depth predictions, etc. can all be put aside.

Now it is time for the Panthers to trot out on the field of play and do the heavy lifting for real. As Coach likes to say, now it is the time to “show me”.

I’m hoping that what the Panthers show me today is a well disciplined team that shows up prepared and ready to play hard nosed no nonsense football.

Pluck the Hens, Hail to Pitt.

Enjoy the pregame link below. Lets Go Pitt!
