I’m back. A bit of traveling for the holiday week(end). Try to get back into things Monday night and the storm that ripped through our area knocked the power out for a good 12 hours or so. The power outage wasn’t the worst — except to my 12-year old daughter who found her tablet useless without wi-fi. Especially since it happened at night and we were able to sleep through half of it.
The worry was all the contents of the fridge and freezer. Well, it was the worry of my wife. Within the first hour of the outage, she’s ready to declare everything in the fridge is doomed. Followed by the ice cream in the freezer. By the morning, she’s planning to toss everything from the freezer. Lose power for more than 24 hours and she is considering a new refrigerator, because who knows what may linger in the old one.
Keep in mind that the minute we lose power, she all but padlocks the doors to the fridge so none of the precious remaining cold escapes.
My only concern was how soon the water from the storm would get into the ground and into our basement. Every time there’s an outage I think about how I really need a battery back-up for the sump pump. And every time the power comes back I put off the move.
Anyways…
The non-con schedule for the 2014 basketball season has been released. The full schedule with the ACC and TV times usually doesn’t hit until late-August/early-September.
Not much else happening in the college basketball landscape as the recruiting cycle doesn’t begin until after 5pm today. So, this got a little more coverage than usual. Apparently there has been a lot of built up resentment about Pitt’s past non-cons.
This is an OK schedule, but you’ll notice that, outside of Maui and the mandated ACC/Big Ten game, Pitt’s best non-conference opponent is either Manhattan or Bona. Both home games. Only one true road game prior to conference play?
These are the things that can come back and haunt in mid-March.
Most of the article is really about complaining about how bad the past schedules have been. Same here.
There may not be a program in the country that is more notorious for their weak non-conference scheduling that Pitt.
In the 11 seasons that Jamie Dixon has been the head coach of the Panthers, they’ve averaged a KenPom non-conference schedule strength of 250.1. Their highest ranking during those 11 years was 129th back in 2007. Only three times in Dixon’s tenure has their non-conference SOS been in the top 200, none of which were in the last five years.
Because, once again, when it gets to the actual schedule itself for 2014…
The Maui Invitational is a nice addition, but it’s not a guarantee. If the Panthers lose their first game and wind up in the loser’s bracket, they could end up in a situation where they play Chaminade, a Division II program, and Purdue, who doesn’t look like they’ll finish in the top ten in the Big Ten next season.
A trip to Indiana is also nice, but it’s part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, meaning that Pitt had no say in the scheduling of that game. The only other road game on Pitt’s schedule is a visit to Hawaii, which comes as an acclimation to Hawaiian time for the Maui Invitational.
The schedule should be an upgrade of last season, but Dixon once again did not exactly putting together a murderer’s row.
Notice, that the schedule bar got raised at the end. It isn’t that it is a bad schedule, it is that it isn’t a tough schedule. It’s also amusing to see that doing the Maui Invitational and going to Indiana in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge are dismissed because Pitt didn’t directly schedule those games. Not sure the logic there, other than to bolster the argument that Pitt/Jamie Dixon didn’t make the call to set up those games.
Again, the complaints seemed more about the past than this year.
There’s certainly some validity to the idea Dixon has historically scheduled meekly in non-league play, but the criticism of this slate seems over-the-top.
Considering the caliber of a beefed-up ACC that now includes potential preseason top 25 teams Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, Louisville and Virginia, Pittsburgh doesn’t need a loaded non-league schedule to ensure chances for marquee wins or to finish with respectable RPI. What’s more, this year’s schedule is an improvement on the anemic slate the Panthers played last season when they still went 25-9, reached the NCAA tournament as a No. 9 seed and finished with a top 40 RPI.
Unlike last season when its holiday tournament was a Legends Classic that featured Stanford, Houston and Texas Tech as the other high-profile teams, Pittsburgh will play in the always formidable Maui Invitational this November. Among the other teams in the field are Final Four threat Arizona, preseason top 20 San Diego State, Big 12 contender Kansas State and respectable BYU, Missouri and Purdue.
The rest of the schedule isn’t menacing, but it’s still an improvement over last season when a neutral court game against Cincinnati was the only notable matchup. A Big Ten-ACC challenge road game at Indiana will be challenging, and home games against Manhattan and Florida Gulf Coast represent a modest attempt to bolster the mid-major portion of the schedule.
Pitt’s biggest problem last year was the failure to notch those big conference wins. As much as last year’s non-con slate was lousy, I’m not sure playing better teams would have helped them. Having more chances to win big games, doesn’t mean you will. Pitt really, really struggled with that last year.
The biggest thing about the non-con — specifically the Maui Invitational — is that people will have a better idea about this Pitt squad a lot earlier than last year.
I like the idea of a generator, especially for winter, but it is an expensive insurance policy.
The non-com is deja vu all over again. We all hate it for multiple reasons. The worst being an empty Pete and paying for tickets that are for exhibitions. I guess everybody does it but we have made it an art form. We should just play the local State schools and support them financially. IUP, California, Edinboro, West Liberty, add W&J and St. Vincents, at least some of their fans would fill a few seats.
My bitching over the years, especially the last couple has nothing to do with the RPI.
The fans have sold out the Pete for 12 or 13 years in a row.
They deserve better than this sh*t of a home non-con Dixon and or Pederson put together every year.
Actually, a few years ago, they had a home and home with Wisconsin, Ohio State, Washington.
What’s changed the past 4 or 5 years, I don’t know,
but for the fans, this home non-con, as the English would say, is shite!!!
And totally do not get sports writers complaining about the overall non-con. The story should be, Pitt gets tough again (yeah whatever, Dixon did not schedule them apparently, boo-hoo). Potentially 4 major conference games, against preseason about the #3 (AZ), #12 (SD State) and #35 (K State) teams.
No, it is not absolutely stellar but few teams test themselves in the non-con too much more than that.
It was warm-ups before the game. I told him to just go out there and have fun.
He just smirked, just the response my idiotic comment deserved.
Interesting were only 10 spots behind the nits and the only reason for that being their women’s volleyball team
When schools like Syracuse, who rarely leave the confines of the Carrier Dome against weak opponents for the last decade or more, rarely get criticized.
Or should I say NEVER get criticized !
Oh my bad, sorry they’re a network brand & fav.
Previously those sportswriters in all the big cities found it hard to criticize PITT since we’d come into their town and beat their local university pretty consistently.
And they wouldn’t want to criticize a school(in this case PITT), trying to lessen them, if it also lessened their own local school in the process. And also the league to a degree.
Now they we don’t play these schools anymore and are no longer part of their league. And a lot of them have blamed us for it’s demise.
It is now ‘open season’ on PITT !
Looking back at 2012-13, they tipped off with San Diego St (Battle of Midway) and then had Wagner, Princeton, Colgate, Eastern Michigan, Long Beach State, Monmouth, Canisius, Detroit, Temple (@MSG), Alcorn St and Central Conn plus a game @ Arkansas as part of BE/SEC Challenge. That is one trip out West, one trip to Arkansas and not leaving NY until January 6, 2013.
In 2011-12 Syracuse stayed close to home with Fordham, Manhattan, Albany, Colgate, VaTech (@MSG), Stanford (@MSG), Eastern Michigan (3 years in a row), Florida (BE/SEC), Marshall, George Washington, Bucknell, and Tulane along with a trip to NC State. That is one trip out of New York before January 1, 2012.
In 2010-11 Cuse played Northern Iowa, Canisius, Detroit, William & Mary, Michigan (Legends Classic, New Jersey), Ga Tech (Legends Classic, New Jersey), Cornell, NC State, Michigan St (MSG), Colgate, Iona, Morgan St, and Drexel without going beyond Atlantic City. Because of strange Big East scheduling with St Johns and Seton Hall, they did not leave the NY/NJ area until January 17, 2011.
2009-10 is almost the same as 2010-11 (including not leaving NY/NJ until mid- January) except for a trip to Florida.
I am not saying Pitt plays a killer OOC schedule. They don’t – – – but Syracuse definitely deserves some scrutiny. (it reminds me a bit of SEC football teams not leaving the South)
Then again, it is not like Pitt has any sort of well-regarded sportswriters to advocate for them.
Some schools and we know who they are, can get away with murder (the old saying) and get away with it.
Others (like us ) who are not a ‘brand’ or a ‘media fav’ are the ones the media uses to write their little articles on.
Like I said previously….their ‘whipping boys’.
Yes we mostly have had a lightweight non-con, but most schools do it.
The difference is now, we’re a position to do it and some schools and a lot of the northeast media apparently don’t like it.
F*ck em !
With the money and stakes involved that article at that critical time & juntion didn’t just happen, my brothers.
There are 11 guys over 300 lbs. Hopefully this is mostly muscle due to the conditioning program.
Other guys that stood out to me, Adonis Jennings, 6’3″ 195, Tyler Boyd, 6’2″ 190, Shakir Soto, 6’3 270 and Matt Galambos 6’2″ 245, Dorian Johnson 6’5″ 300.
Overall we are getting bigger, hopefully stronger.
I know these numbers are usually exaggerated, Artie Rowell now weighs more than his backup. Also named to Rimington watch, not bad. The two new O-linemen are huge, hopefully they put pressure on the starters.
I am hoping for a break-out year.
If the bowl game is a true indication of what to expect from Voytik, then we have a winner at QB this season. I expect many growing pains with Chad at the helm but I’m feeling confident that we have a leader that this team will rally behind and play hard for at QB.
If Voytik goes down with a serious injury however, then we are in deep shite!
He has been around quite a while, he certainly can hand off to Conner and Co. He has a decent arm, and can run a little. He should be less fragile now.
Obviously after him we are toast.
Voytik mentioned that he is working out with “the other QBs.” Along with Trey and the incoming Bertke, these (and maybe others) played QB in high school:
Jaquaun Davidson
Tyler Boyd
Reggie Mitchell
Anthony Gonzalez

RAY VINOPAL, maligned for his early season play, then gradually transformed into a leader,, forged in the crucible of on field trials in the furnace of major college football. Go ahead and tell me that Pitt isn’t a player in the ACC after watching this promo.
Are you ready for some Pitt Football??? I know that I am!
Hail to Pitt!

Syracuse typically schedules cupcakes….agreed
But every year there is one big school that visits the Dome, including Florida, Memphis, Villanova (Non Conf), NC STate…….
A lot of this complaining (justified, IMO) goes away if Pitt would follow the Cuse model and give Panther fans ONE decent December game.
Think about it…..Pitt fans pony up money to get the chance at seating….and then must buy the season tickets.
In return,,,the non con is terrible….half of the ACC home schedule is average at best….resulting in Pitt fans throwing tons of money at Steve Pederson for 6-7 quality games a year.
This model must change….or Pitt is going to see more blue seats when they take the floor in the future.
I agree, not interested in RPI but would like at least a couple semi interesting games. I do have season tickets for both FB & BB and to even give the BB tickets vs kennesaw st & ect is almost impossible. Y not h & away w/ uconn, WVU GTown Nova? or maybe home one year away the next? Since the Pete sells out anyway, Pitt would not lose $$ having less games, but they would make a heck of a lot more in concessions due to greater attendance.
