Draft Night for Patterson And Zanna

Talib Zanna is not going to hear his name called tonight. He will get a chance in the NBA summer league with the possibility of a free agent signing, but he is likely heading overseas.

Lamar Patterson has a shot at the end of the second round.

What do the mock drafts say?: For what it’s worth, Patterson’s stock seems to have dropped a bit by this standard. In April, NBAdraft.net had Patterson going to Miami with the 57th pick. Draftexpress.com had him 59th to Toronto and CBS Sports’ Matt Moore, 45th to Minnesota.

Patterson did not show up on any of the current mocks of those three as of Wednesday night. He does show up on two of the four “final” mocks at BasketballInsiders.com, Steve Kennedy’s (to Indiana, No. 57) and Steve Kyler’s (Denver, No. 56).

The NBA Draft has very, very few sure things — even in the first round. Here’s a quick review of the last 19 drafts. So many of those picks weren’t mistakes. They just never translated.

Lamar Patterson does have some things going for him.

Lamar Patterson, 6-5 forward, Pittsburgh. “His basketball IQ is as good as anybody’s. Holy s—, he can really pass. He’s just going to be challenged athletically. I don’t know if he can match up with the wings in our league. If he’s a mid-to-late second rounder, I would jump at it. He needs to get in a little better shape.”

I like Lamar Patterson. A lot. I will be watching. I want to hear his name called tonight. But I am unsure how much better his conditioning can really get. He’s very skilled. He’s smart, but he is not elite-level athletic. He never was.

And in the NBA, the premium is so high on athleticism. If the first round is a complete crapshoot, what does that make the second round? Let alone the end of the second round.

At that point in the draft you are more likely to see a NBA team pick a young overseas player to have his rights and see if he develops in a couple years, than to draft a college senior.

I get a kick out of Jamie Dixon suggesting the Spurs as a possibility — mainly because they have nearly 10% of the picks in the second round.

At the very least, he has stories to tell from the month before the draft.

“I knew he was going to be there, but when he walked in the gym I said, ‘Oh, man, there he goes,’ ” said Patterson, describing his first encounter with [Michael] Jordan. “At the end of the workout I made a couple nice moves and got a drink of water. He told me, ‘You’ve got an old-school game.’ I got a nice laugh out of that.”

That was nothing compared with the hands-on treatment Patterson got from Pippen, special advisor to Bulls president & chief operating officer Michael Reinsdorf, who attended his workout in Chicago.

“Scottie Pippen rebounded for me,” said Patterson, who led Pitt in scoring and assists in 2013-14. “Can you imagine that?”

So, there’s that.

Despite his lack of athleticism (in NBA terms at least), I think Patterson could make it in the NBA as a role player, a nice 5-7 year career, maybe longer. Perhaps he’s not as pure of a shooter as JJ Redick, but nobody would say that Redick is an athletic freak by any stretch and he does not have Patterson’s guile as a passer/play maker, and he’s managed to have a pretty nice NBA career.

Comment by Carmen 06.26.14 @ 7:39 am

Would love to see the Spurs take Patterson. Popovich likes good basketball players and unlike other NBA GM’s, he actually watches the games. He took Blair despite the fact that he’s only 6’6″ ish and has no ACL’s. Patterson’s lack of NBA speed is an issue, but won’t prevent him from being a nice bench/role player in the league.

Two names that are popping up on many mock drafts, Khem Birch and DeAndre Kane. It is hard for me not imagine what last season would have looked like with them on the roster. The ACC was there for the taking. A line up of a Birch, Zanna, Patterson, Kane and Robinson would have been as talented as any in the league. Then Pitt’s second five, Newkirk, Wright, Johnson, Young and Randall would have been better than half of the ACC team’s starters.

Pitt , under Dixon, has been so painfully close to elite. To get over the hump, they need to land/keep some of the top talent that they are really close to getting.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 06.26.14 @ 7:51 am

Popovich loves good passers so may be it isn’t far fetched at all

If any of the NBA teams would consider heart along with shooting, rebounding, passing, etc., then Talib would have a real shot of being picked tonight

Is it too early to get excited about Cam Johnson?

Comment by Boubacar Aw 06.26.14 @ 8:00 am

boubacar – i was at summer league last night. definitely not too early to get excited about CamJ. Do you think he redshirts?

Comment by ptbreezeb 06.26.14 @ 8:58 am

Last week, if you’d have asked me about Cam Johnson redshirting this year, I would have said 99% yes. Now it is more like 75% yes. There are still too many guys ahead of him and he desperately needs some physical development.

But, he has the one skill they desperately need at the 2, 3-point shooting. So if there’s an injury or suspension, he could be thrown into the mix.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 06.26.14 @ 9:22 am

Im all the way with you. On one hand – why rush? on the other hand maybe a benefit to get some experience prior to Wilson & Heron’s arrival. Trying not to think I see something thats not – its just summer league. But his stroke is butter, he seems quick wout being frantic and his range is from Atwood street.

Comment by ptbreezeb 06.26.14 @ 11:06 am

If Michael was impressed with Lamar, I sure hope Michael’s team, the Charlotte Hornets (yes we’re the Hornets again) picks Lamar with their picks.

The Hornets could definitely use Lamar off the bench at the 2. And like most Pitt players, Lamar is NBA ready unlike most of these ‘projects’ the NBA is so fond of. Most of whom never pan out.

I would surely love to see Lamar wearing the Purple & Teal.

Comment by Emel 06.26.14 @ 11:21 am

FYI, Since there are now 2 Cams, Cam Johnson’s nickname is “Slim” … I guess for obvious reasons though I’ve never seen him.

Thus, when we need instant offense this year, we insert the backcourt of Slim and Nuke

Comment by wbb 06.26.14 @ 11:22 am

Cam Johnson could be Dixon’s best under-the-radar find since Steve Adams.

Comment by Howard 06.26.14 @ 11:24 am

Comment by Carmen 06.26.14 @ 7:39 am

All of that is certainly true Carmen. Reddick is a Dukie though and they are treated differently by the NBA. Duke has a ‘brand’. Is a ‘blueblood’.

PITT has neither, well I guess you could the brand we’re labeled with, year after year, is a tough blue collar team representing of course, in the national media’s drivel, a tough blue collar city as if the steel mills/etc. were still open. To be more precise, a tough blue collar, defensive minded hard nosed team that is offensively challenged.

Media stereotypes are a very tough thing to overcome.

Comment by Emel 06.26.14 @ 11:29 am

^well I guess you could *call* the brand we’re labeled with, ……….^

Comment by Emel 06.26.14 @ 11:32 am

wbb,

“Slim” sounds good. We definitely need a way to refer to him since there is both another Cam and another Johnson on the team. Alternativelhy, maybe we could call him “CJ”.

Comment by Howard 06.26.14 @ 11:37 am

How about Twiggy 🙂

Comment by Emel 06.26.14 @ 11:38 am

It’s 88 presently down here, on the way to 92. AC running non-stop pretty much.

I see it’s only 73 in da Burg, which sounds so much more pleasant. I could have the windows open and actually could play golf or tennis without a 2nd thought.

Comment by Emel 06.26.14 @ 11:43 am

Howard and Emel, note that Slim is not my nickname for him. it is the nickname given to him by his teammates.

I would prefer CJ or Twiggy but Slim is OK with me. Probably my favorite uncle was nicknamed Slime

Comment by wbb 06.26.14 @ 11:53 am

Make that Slim and NOT Slime

Comment by wbb 06.26.14 @ 11:53 am

lol wbb….i was thinking strange for Uncle Slime to be your favorite.

Anybody have an update on last night’s pro am games?

Randall still Patrick Ewing?
Uchebo’s vertical jump increased from 1″ to 2″?

Comment by Emel 06.26.14 @ 1:56 pm

Pitt’s Aron Nwonkwo had a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Joshua Ko added 10.

Everybody scores and all the big men apparently get double/doubles.

Comment by Emel 06.26.14 @ 1:58 pm

I did not go last night But did see this tweet….

@Stephen_Gertz: Aron Nwanko just crushed Uchebo on a two-handed flush, plus the foul. #Pitt link to t.co

Not good if you’re counting on Uchebo to provide a defensive presence in the paint.

Lots of twitter love for CamJ last night.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 06.26.14 @ 2:13 pm

The good news is that all Pitt players seem to be excelling … even Uchebo

The bad news is that all Pitt players seem to be excelling … even the walk-ons

Comment by wbb 06.26.14 @ 2:13 pm

And all these players from small schools as well wbb.

Comment by Emel 06.26.14 @ 2:15 pm

Nothing in that article I linked on what Randall did.

Uchebo had another double/double but then I read this:

Neither team could afford much of a break–Bakery Square playing with five players, Shale Attorney with six.

Uchebo is on Bakery Square.

Sounds like a glorified ‘pick up’ games.

Comment by Emel 06.26.14 @ 2:17 pm

Pitt walk-on Ryan Lecak finished with 20 points on 7-10 shooting, including a 5-7 performance from three-point range

Comment by Emel 06.26.14 @ 2:18 pm

Thought his name was Mike….lol

Looks like JD will be forced to play fast tempo

If we’re going to run, Big Joe will need some new shorter shorts.

And unbow those wheels.

Comment by Emel 06.26.14 @ 3:12 pm

I wonder who is the best uncontested free throw shooter on the team: Ko? Lecak? Jeter? Slim?

Comment by Howard 06.26.14 @ 4:06 pm

maybe DJ?

Comment by Howard 06.26.14 @ 4:07 pm

Easy on the Cam Johnson optimism, 4 months ago he was playing Beaver Co. Christian.

Comment by alcofan 06.26.14 @ 4:55 pm

alcofan, just a bit over 4 months ago he was only 6’1, now he’s 6’7!

Comment by Howard 06.26.14 @ 5:31 pm

the best foul shooter is Mike Young. Believe he shot > 80% as a freshman last year including some clutch ones late in games

Comment by wbb 06.26.14 @ 5:49 pm

Anyone see DW behind home plate at the bucco game.

Comment by Taylor 06.26.14 @ 6:26 pm

Zanna and Patterson are really going to have nice careers overseas. They will be stars. In the NBA they are hangers on at best.

Nice to see that Sleepy is making a living in Switzerland. Very expensive place to live but I believe that room and board is generally included in Europe.

Sounds like Cam Johnson will mature into a fine player.

Comment by gc 06.26.14 @ 7:27 pm

Randall didn’t play last night. He wasn’t there.

Comment by pitt1972 06.26.14 @ 8:08 pm

As much as I like Lamar, IMHO he will never play in the NBA except maybe the D league. He will likely have a nice career playing overseas, however.

Comment by pitt1972 06.26.14 @ 8:10 pm

@Taylor I saw DW behind home plate at tonight’s Bucco game. Looked like he was really into the game.

Comment by Panther Fan in Hoopieland 06.26.14 @ 9:46 pm

CONGRATS to Lamar … never expected it, and certainly not that high. Way to go.

Comment by Tomas 06.26.14 @ 10:43 pm

Good for Lamar Patterson. Represented the University well for 4 years. He worked hard, waited his time, and improved every year.

This is also good for the program. For the success Pitt has had for the past decade plus they had a staggeringly low number of kids drafted. Hopefully more kids start landing on NBA rosters, as that can only help recruiting.

Speaking of recruiting, on the football side, while 2015 is a down year locally, 2016 appears to be loaded. Just another reason this upcoming season is absolutely huge for the future of the program. Eight or more wins and more scholarships to offer than this years 16, and hopefully Pitt can land their share of these kids.

Again congratulations to Lamar Patterson and best of luck as his his professional career starts and as always Hail to Pitt!!!!

Big time props to LP….He improved every year and took adv of it…..good luck…h2p

Underclassmen have the opportunity to explore their draft options and go thru pro workouts , get advice from the NBA scouts as to whether they will be drafted or not, and then decide to remove their name from the draft and return to school .. as long as they didn’t sign with an agent and finished their schoolwork in the spring term.

Wonder if Khem’s ‘handlers’ ever considered this option or even knew of it?

Comment by wbb 06.27.14 @ 6:19 am

Taylor, Panther Fan, I assume a Pitt booster has those seats behind the plate. I remmember PC sat behind the plate with his family last year or the year before … was typically stoic and left in the 7th inning … frickin Brewers’ fan!

Comment by wbb 06.27.14 @ 6:23 am

Congrats to Lamar, not the first time I’ve been wrong, hope he does well. Nice Payday! I actually think Zanna has more upside, hopefully he gets a chance.

I count 8 players drafted from the ACC, plus 1 from Louisville. Most of them hurt us last year, glad to see them gone.

Comment by gc 06.27.14 @ 7:20 am

Michigan and Michigan St had 5 guys drafted. Let’s go Smoke!

Comment by gc 06.27.14 @ 7:29 am

Congrats to Lamar. Will make a good recruiting story for Smoke.

Comment by Dan 72 06.27.14 @ 8:01 am

It should also be noted….Khem Bhirch…..Undrafted.

Comment by tedsptman 06.27.14 @ 8:37 am

Zanna speaks like 5 languages so playing in Europe ought to be perfect. The Zman will star at that level and I hope he has a long and prosperous career. Lamar will get his shot at the NBA and I hope he realizes all his dreams as well.

Too bad Khem Birch hasn’t lived up to his full potential. I thought I would get some satisfaction out of watching him come up short but I don’t. I think he could have done better as a Pitt guy, and it’s a shame he didn’t take advantage of his chance. Talib and Lamar sure did.

Comment by spiritofsection22 06.27.14 @ 10:36 am

Khem was an immature, naive 18 yr old (as was I) who put his trust in the wrong people when he decided to jump ship.

I too feel somewhat bad for him … and somehow a ‘I told you so’ doesn’t do anyone any good. He is still young and has a chance to eventually reach the NBA … it will just be a harder journey

Comment by wbb 06.27.14 @ 11:00 am

Howard, I saw him at the North Catholic game he was 6’6′.

Comment by alcofan 06.27.14 @ 11:11 am

Comment by alcofan 06.26.14 @ 4:55 pm

I HEAR YA!!! (its just summer league, its just summer league, its just summer league, its just summer league)

No doubt Birch would have been far better off staying here. Far better off. I too feel bad for him, shame.

Comment by ptbreezeb 06.27.14 @ 11:49 am

alcofan,

Don’t confuse me with the facts. I’m enjoying my irrational optimism.

Besides I wrote that he was 6’1 *about* 4 months ago. Twenty months ago was *about* 4 months ago, right?

I got my info about his growth spurt from the following tweet which appeared on the Cardiac Hill blog when Slim was signed:

“2014 guard Cameron Johnson has committed to, and signed with Pitt today. 6’8 with a 4.6 GPA. Has grown five inches in a year and a half.”

— Matthew Steinbrink (@MattSteinbrink) April 21, 2014

Comment by Howard 06.27.14 @ 12:53 pm

I love the Cam Johnson optimism as long it comes with appropriate expectations on timeline.

He really needs a redshirt year to physically mature. My fear, Pitt is desperately going to need 3pt shooting from the guards. If Chris Jones doesn’t show a big improvement and Durand Johnson doesn’t heal quickly, Jamie may be tempted to throw him out there sooner than he should.

Johnson is a late bloomer, he grew 6 inches between his junior and senior year. He just turned 18, he’s only a few months older than Maverick Rowan, who’s two years away from coming to Pitt.

Cam’s got a ton of raw ability and should be able to help Pitt down the road.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 06.27.14 @ 12:59 pm

Regarding Patterson getting drafted but not Khem Birch, I wonder if the success of recent Pitt grads in the NBA raised Patterson’s draft position.

Comment by Howard 06.27.14 @ 1:10 pm

I assume he has much to learn about defense. While he can earn playing time although not being a stellar defender due to his great shooting, I would be surprised if he does not redshirt. He probably needs to get stronger also

Comment by wbb 06.27.14 @ 1:12 pm

I’m refrerring to Slim Johnson, BTW

Comment by wbb 06.27.14 @ 1:13 pm

Khem Birch made a mistake leaving Pitt and a second one coming out early. Hard to make it the NBA if the only thing you can do is block shots. An unfortunate example of a kid that has physical tools but not enough patience to develop them.
UNLV missed the NCAA’s. The only year we missed was when he bugged out. Think character may have been a deciding factor in the draft?

Patterson is just the opposite, he made it because of hard work. Same with Zanna, after a late start in basketball, he has really come on and I am sure he will do well wherever he ends up playing.

Any word on why Randall did not play on Wednesday?
Any word on Haughton?

Comment by gc 06.27.14 @ 3:54 pm

How much further along would Birch have been playing a year with Adams and having Patterson pass him the ball? How much better would we have been with Adams, Birch and Zanna underneath and Patterson playing the two?

Comment by gc 06.27.14 @ 4:01 pm

I went to Vegas a few months ago. Asked three different cabbies if they followed UNLV (all 3, a big YES!), and then, what they thought of Birch….all three, a big, Meh…

None of them thought he had an NBA future and thought Pitt was much better off without him.

Comment by DD 06.27.14 @ 5:21 pm

On the off chance of being controversial, someone here suggested we would have been kick-ass with Birch and Kane playing instead of Young and Wright.

At first I was going to disagree but really, I have to agree…but only because after 3 years under Dixon they would have been far superior players than they really were last year.

Comment by DD 06.27.14 @ 5:53 pm

Congrats Lamar… on going 18th in the 2nd round.

You bucked the general consensus.

Personally I think Lamar is way better than players like Bogdan Bogdanovic, who went in the 1rst round.

Comment by Emel 06.27.14 @ 6:29 pm

The only downside the Bucks also drafted Jabari Parker at SF, which means Lamar might have to make it as a SG.

At 6’5″ he is more suited to SG in the NBA and can fill it up from 3 and is an excellent passer.

Comment by Emel 06.27.14 @ 6:42 pm

@ gc

That frontline would have been opposing as sh*t

Adams, Birch and Zanna, especially defensively.

We might quite possibly made it to the Final 4 and won the whole thing.

But hence it was not to be, much like if Brian Shorter would have been eligible when we had Charles Smith and Jerome Lane on the front line.

Comment by Emel 06.27.14 @ 6:50 pm

Of note, a guy I always thought was overrated and the NBA did too !

Syracuse’s leading scorer CJ Fair was not drafted at all. While Ennis went in the 1rst round and Jerami GRant went in the 2nd.

link to syracuse.com

Comment by Emel 06.27.14 @ 6:57 pm

Fair wasn’t the only solid college player who went undrafted on Thursday. He was joined by Cincinnati’s Sean Kilpatrick, Ohio State’s Aaron Craft, North Carolina’s James Michael McAdoo and Arizona State’s Jahii Carson in the undrafted free agent category.

They’re in a ‘state of shock’ over at Tarhole U.

Comment by Emel 06.27.14 @ 6:59 pm

I think it is to JD’s credit that Lamar Patterson is drafted into the NBA and an embarrassment to Boeheim and Roy Williams that players with the talent of Fair and McAdoo weren’t.

I bet Zanna has a big time career in Europe. He rebounds, defends, can score ,run the court and speak whatever language you throw at him. He has 2 degrees, a good work ethic and is in great physical condition. If Adams had stuck around we would have made the final 4 and Zanna would have gotten drafted too.

Comment by spiritofsection22 06.28.14 @ 10:28 am

I think playing out of position hurt Z, as he isn’t big enough to play Center in the NBA, doesn’t really have a ‘back to the basket’ type game.

He really is a PF or SF type player and in that role last year when Adams was the Center, he had more of a chance to shoot mid-range jumpers facing the basket. And in some games he really excelled at that.

I really think’s Lamar’s play was that much better because JD had few options at SF after Durand Durand went down, and therefore Lamar didn’t have to worry about being ‘yanked’ off the court and played with less angst about that.

In previous years if he made a mistake he would yanked in favor of JJ Mooore, so that imo limited his development.

Atlanta & ESPN already have Lamar listed as a SG
