Pitt Has That Final Home Date

Pitt tends to wait until August to put out its basketball schedule. Most of us rely on piecing together the non-con by leaks and releases from other schools.

As you may recall, Pitt posted a need for a home game at the end of 2014.

The lucky team that accepted was  Florida Gulf Coast University.

FGCU has added a travel addition to its non-conference schedule, visiting Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Dec. 30, to go along with a previously announced game at Xavier on Dec. 28, FGCU athletic director Ken Kavanagh said today.

With 31 total games permitted each season, FGCU and other A-Sun schools have 17 non-conference games to find. Xavier, which is paying FGCU $95,000 with other compensation for the one-time game, and Pittsburgh are one-year deals. Schools can accept up to four “guarantee” games, although FGCU is planning to cut that number to three this season.

Have to imagine Pitt is paying close to the same amount for that game. Kind of a shrewd scheduling by FGCU to put those road games back-to-back. An extra night in a hotel instead of an additional flight.

Recruiting rankings don’t mean a lot but the fanfare of signing four and five star recruits gets everyone’s attention.

Not here to bash Chryst’s recruiting. I actually like Chryst and what he’s doing.

But you can’t say he is a great recruiter. Penn State, Miami, Florida State – all these schools are cleaning Pitt’s clock.

Dixon and Chryst are both seemingly honest, focused, player-development coaches. Neither is blowing the lid off recruiting.

I think we’re all hoping PC can work some of that Badger magic for PITT.

As has been well documented, the Badgers never tore up the recruiting rankings very much either yet have been one of the preeminent teams in the Big Joke since the early 90’s.

The Pedo’s certainly outrecruited the Badgers in most of those years and even we did.

Give us some of that Badger magic !

Interesting to note, PC played at Wisky before Alvarez’s arrival.

Looks like he was the 3rd or 4rth string QB in 1987 and 1988.

Wisky was 3-8 in ’87
And 1-10 in ’88.

Barry arrived in 1990 and ’93 they won the Rose Bowl game and went 10-1-1.

Rest in Peace to Coach Noll. Changed the city and the Steelers with his approach to sports, players, and life.

Certainly not claiming they are the same, I am just comparing Chryst, Frankenstein, and uber-meyer…. who is the most similar in demeanor and approach?

It took 4 years for Noll to get to the playoffs… 6 for the first superbowl. was never the rah rah guy, flashy, etc.

Noll was a program builder…. empire builder.

Chryst shows hopeful signs he is cut from the same cloth. If his team projects out and becomes the ‘sleeper’ in the coastal, gets 8 wins in league play, etc… all of which are reasonable expectations…

then the recruiting class takes care of itself in 2015.

Of course the same old same old people here pissing on the campfire.

What counts is next spring that the program has the new players it needs to keep improving… irrespective of stars and such BS. Today is June 14, 2014… who cares.

Frankenstein no surprise the guy wants to be all sizzle and flash right now… we’ll see. He better win. His closet in Vandy better be empty…

Bottom line: We will see for both come December 2014.

RIP Coach Noll.

Pittman – I am a verg positive person in all facets of my life if you must know. I just dont like seeing my university look inept year after year in all sports. For the investment in hoops we are so far from being elite. Football isnt anywhere near close to Top 30 and the okympic sports except wrestling are getting embarrassed in ACC. Have you seen Baseball? There is no emphasis or money being spent on ACC level facilities or coaches. We dont even have a football stadium. So yes, very negative until some of the above mentioned items are fixed. If you are satisfied with Peterson or the University’s lack of attention to sports then that is fine. I am not happy.

Comment by Upittbaseball 06.14.14 @ 2:46 pm

Upittbaseball, What investment in hoops are you talking about? Pitt was elite in football under Jack Sherill and Jock Sutherland and other than that I am not aware of us being elite in any sport. Few posting here give a crap about any other sport at Pitt. I for one don’t care if the baseball team has to buy there own hats as long as there is plenty of cash for football and hoops. This isn’t Duke or Kentucky and I think we are at least respectable in hoops and are working our way towards that in football. We don’t really have the fan base to expect more than that from the administration. Football could be big but they would never spend the money and hoops is in a golden era now compared to what it has accomplished historically. Pittsburgh isn’t a basketball town.

Comment by spiritofsection22 06.14.14 @ 3:05 pm

Glad to learn, by your own self-assessment Upittbaseball , that you are “positive in all facets of your life”. Because frankly, based solely on your consistently pessimistic posts about Pitt athletics, if the rest of your life followed suit, I’ve been concerned that you were but a bullet through your ear away from ending an otherwise totally hopeless, depressing existence.

What would I do if the great dentist didn’t grace me with his profound views on life and Pitt Athletics. Doc, I worked my ass off and had multiple surgeries while playing at Pitt, I believe I earned the right just as much as anyone to have an opinion. To see people in power that can care less about wins and losses bothers me. Say what you what, I prefer to have high expectations unlike yourself who see’s the entire athletic department as puppies and rainbows. Now go clean some teeth.

Tre Tipton, a WR from Apollo-Ridge, has committed to the Panthers.

He had offers from Pitt, Michigan State, and Toledo (amongst others). 3 star on 247 and not rated on Rivals.

Comment by Mailman 06.14.14 @ 6:32 pm

Awesome news about Tipton, we are stockpiling receivers at wide receiver U. Still waiting for those linebackers and D ends, or a big D tackle.

When we are stockpiling those we will be able to compete.

Comment by gc 06.14.14 @ 7:30 pm

Upitt, you never answered the question.

Comment by marcus of schaumburg 06.14.14 @ 7:35 pm

Guys, quit picking on upittbaseball! Upitt, time to forget about it. Everyone is aware of Pitt’s shortcomings. I agree with you totally, but repeating the same thing over and over again gets us no where and frankly is boring.

Let’s work on getting the academics in better shape. Of course winning sports teams help a school’s rep.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 06.14.14 @ 9:24 pm

Investment in hoops = paying Dixon a lot money and a bew on campus arena that was built after tearing down the on campus football stadium. That is the investment Football we dont pay anywhere near top money and play 5 miles away.

Comment by Upittbaseball 06.14.14 @ 9:27 pm

Welcome aboard Tre! We are putting together quite a collection of wide receivers! Keep up the good work Coach. HTP!
RIP Mr. Noll! A man who built his reputation on deeds not talk, unlike graham, franklin and that ilk! I am glad that his suffering is over. UPone

Well Upitt…you know what they say about opinions. All I can say is that while we may or may not be “elite” in basketball, we are better than most, and that’s a lot better than we used to be. And honestly, that’s pretty damn good for Pitt.

As for Football, the jury is still out on Chryst, but I think that *most* rational people on this board can see a lot of reasons for optimism. I’m sorry that you aren’t one of them.

As for the administration. I would say that the most fans’ opinions on the current administration are well documented. I don’t think anyone would be sad to see Pederson go. I know the good people of Nebraska certainly hate him.

And bringing it full circle, as for you opinions. Maybe you want to try to be positive in ALL facets of your life. You’ll probably live longer and better. link to mayoclinic.org

Hail to Pitt. Fail to UPitt.

Goodnight.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 06.15.14 @ 12:23 am

Great news about landing Tre Tipton. As with most recruits Paul Chryst has been landing Tipton mentioned the family atmosphere that is being created here and the comfort level with the coaching staff.

I believe this class is only going to have 16 kids or so, the focus has to shift to defense. I am really hoping Troy Douglas proves himself to be an ace recruiter, as it is pretty apparent House needs help in that area.

Mailman thanks for the link, thought that was a great piece on Paul Chryst and his late father George. Coach Chryst seems to be class all the way and can be a great representative for this university. Sure he has had some bumps in the road and very soon the win totals and the recruiting must improve, hopefully they go hand in hand.

Guys like Upittbaseball and Old Pitt Grad that just bash Chryst every chance they get kill me. This is a guy doing things the right way with class and integrity. We should all be behind him and hoping he gets this program built the right way. He is bringing in character kids who can represent this university well on and off the field. Again, we all realize coach Chryst and his players can be the greatest guys in the world, but you must have success on the field. I think some very real and positive steps have been taken in that direction. I am not naive or unrealistic, this is a process. Let the man work his plan, and hopefully soon we can all enjoy the rewards.

Welcome aboard Mr. Tipton and as always Hail To Pitt!!!!

Tipton’s highlights, nice hands, instinct, and feet.

Looks like another good one.

Puppies & Rainbows, hilarious????!

I want to see DL and LB recruits committing! That’s the weak spot in this team going forward over the next couple of years. Another QB commitment would help me sleep better at might also.

Hopefully the deluge will be forthcoming after Pitt’s summer camps conclude.

Comment by Dr. Tom 06.15.14 @ 7:32 am

I understand the venom towards Upitt but you Koolaiders should stop and take a breath.

You want a HC with integrity. Check

You want a HC who can actualy make decisions on game day? Check

You want kids who are great students and will do well in the classroom? Check

You want the staff to extend recruiting to non familiar places like Minn, Hawaii, Mich. / Check

You got what you want….and his name is Paul Hackett

Comment by Tallahassee Panther 06.15.14 @ 8:27 am

BTW,

The same birdie that told me Pitt plays Kansas in 2015 is now telling me they will also be playing Cal/Berkely

Comment by Tallahassee Panther 06.15.14 @ 8:28 am

“Venom” is too harsh a term. Last time I checked, Upittbaseball is a Pitt athlete, alumni and fan so he’s still in the Panther Faithful fold. He’s simply succumbed to the dark side for way too long. Pitt is on the upswing both in football and BB.
Not great, debatable if the football team is even good yet but laying the ground work for the future in the ACC.

The flack Upitt gets is of his own doing. He accuses the optimists as seeing nothing but puppies & rainbows while he resides at the opposite end of the spectrum demanding excellence when only steady improvement is the rational expectation.

Things are rarely black and white. Personally I’m seeing Pitt with appropriate shades of gray glasses. This season in Pitt football will clear things up as to where the program is headed. Upitt’s opinions are not statements of fact although he proposes often that they are.

Those of us with more optimistic leans do hope for the best for our University, and that is not naïve simply because we hold that attitude.

At the end of the day performance and results will dictate whose opinion is valid. That is why they “play the games”. I just wish that Upittbaseball would learn how to enjoy the process.

So there’s no “venom” there. We just enjoy pulling his chain just as much as he enjoys pulling ours. At the end of the day we all still remain Pitt fans. Hail to Pitt!

Doc – Happy Father’s Day and all you other guys as well! Emel, we ever hear from Frankcan? I sure hope and pray he is okay. I miss him around here. Doc, if I can get to Savannah you can hammer some positivity into me over some good eats and drinks and Cigars. I know Tipton’s coach and was a good friend. If he says the kid is good and a playmaker I beleive him despite just MSU being the other Major Team offering him. I like the signing. We do need Defense or we will have to win games 52-51 and if that is the case we can move to the Big 12. As a side note, I will be the only ACC Pitt flag flying amongst the SEC, Big 12 and Big 10 folks here in Texas. Couple FSU and VT flags but tons of TAM, LSU, UT, Baylor, TCU’s. Lots of Steeler Fans here though.

Comment by Upittbaseball 06.15.14 @ 1:17 pm

Since those Final Four party plans of yours in Texas didn’t work out for us, you have an open invite to check out our new digs in Savannah, GA if you do ever come by this way. I’d like to figure out who this Upittbaseball guy is in person anyway. And yes, I will beat some positivity into you, one way or another.

Comment by Dr. Tom 06.15.14 @ 2:51 pm

BTW, I’m also concerned about FRANKCAN. Not like him not to be wringing his hands daily lamenting over the lack of recruits committed to the Panthers during the slow summer months.

Lets just hope that he is on an extended vacation in Africa or something or that he just forgot to pay his internet bill and hasn’t figured it out yet.

You don’t think that Chas finally got fed up with his posts and banned him from the Blather until he gets a spell check on his computer, do you? Even though apparently he can’t spell for $hit, I was just getting good at reading his FRANKCAN coded messages. Missing his posts since I require constant practice to stay on top of that code.

FRANKCAN come home!

Tallahassee as a courtesy I would appreciate prior notice before you type the name of a certain former occupier of the Panther head coaching position, but luckily I was able to get to the trash can this time. The only talent he had was in destroying D-1 football programs! Pitt and USC! HTP! UPone

I too miss Frankcam. His posts were hard to read but usually carried nuggets

@Upittbaseball, We don’t have a big time following in football or hoops at Pitt. Under Sutherland and briefly under Sherrill Pitt was big time in football. Other than that there hasn’t been anything that resembles an elite program. We are currently enjoying the heyday of Pitt basketball and the last decade has seen more success than ever before. You are among a handful of fans who cares about any other sport at Pitt. I think if you are hoping for us to evolve into a top level sports school and that you will be disappointed. I choose to try and take pleasure from what little success we see. It’s more fun and the reality is the plaid set at Pitt will never spend the money needed to go big time.
