A Couple More In the Fold

Pitt has added a couple verbals to the 2015 football class. I know this is a stunner, but they are on the offensive side of the ball.

Over the weekend, Pitt added a QB (hands off, Vanderbilt!).

Malvern Prep’s Alex Hornibrook, a strong-armed junior quarterback, committed Saturday to play at Pittsburgh. He visited the school Friday and Saturday with his parents, and threw during one of the team’s camp sessions.

“Everything just felt right,” he said. “The campus is amazing, my interaction with the coaches was great, and it’s somewhere I could easily see myself playing.”

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound southpaw, who chose Pitt over Connecticut and Rutgers, added that he is excited about the Panthers renewing their heated rivalry with Penn State beginning in 2016.

Hornibrook is a consensus 3-star QB. He is also strong academically with an offer from Yale.

And very recently a potential target was added to the recruiting class in WR/Athlete Quadree Henderson.

Pitt added a speedy option to its receiving corps Tuesday night when Wilmington (Del.) Alexis I Dupont athlete Quadree Henderson committed to the Panthers.

Henderson picked Pitt over offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Clemson, Delaware, Nebraska, Ohio, Rutgers, Temple and West Virginia. He narrowed his list to Pitt and Boston College before making his selection.

Pitt hosted Henderson for a visit in February when the three-star prospect attended the Panthers’ Junior Day, and the seed for Tuesday’s announcement was planted then.

“It was great,” he told Panther-Lair.com after the visit. “Everything about Pitt was great. I fell in love with it after being there for ten minutes. I was just in love with it.”

Yup, another consensus 3-star recruit.

Henderosn is not a big kid at 5-8 or 5-9, but he is very quick. The type of player that can spread the field and be deadly in special teams — and we all know how much Pitt can use any help in that area.

Isn’t there a couple other players we have offers out to making decisions this week?

Welcome aboard Mr. Henderson!

Kareem Ali(cb) thursday afternoon. Neal Nelson(lb) in a couple of weeks both from the same school.

Comment by pd 06.10.14 @ 9:34 pm

Welcome! Looking forward to seeing some dazzling plays.

Comment by Caw Miller 06.11.14 @ 6:18 am

Both good pick ups. Size, arm strength and smarts at QB and speed at a skill position.

Anybody know how many scholarships Pitt has to offer for this class?

Welcome Quadree! Looking forward to seeing you torch some ACC defenses in the coming years.

Now, if Kareem Ali commits on Thursday it will truly be an awesome week.

@Dr Tom

As you sit with your cup of coffee on the patio this morning watching guys hit off the first tee, you have to be happy about these two kids joining us. More to come.

“Panthers land game breaker”

WE can team up Quadree Henderson in the slot next year with Tyler Boyd & Addonis Jennings.

That could lead to a phenomenal passing attack !!!

VeV !

Welcome to the Golden Triangle Quadree.

Look forward to watching you play down here in road games in Mid-Dixie.

Comment by Emel 06.11.14 @ 7:37 am

Emel you are right! With Voytik coming on and a couple of promising young passers firmly under Chryst’s tutelage, this WR corps is going to be fast and dangerous. Not to mention our Thunder and Lightening rushing attack with Conner, James and Ollison. Just need the OL to gel this year or next and our offense is going to be scary good.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 06.11.14 @ 8:17 am

No reason it can’t happen this year AP !

Huebner should have the O-line a lot more ready than last year !

Voytik will give us some added mobility in the pocket and on QB scrambles. The TE’s will be better and perhaps more involved in the offense.
Boyd, Garner, Witherspoom and Jennings should make a nice foursome of WR’s.

Blewitt made 14 of 18 FG’s last year with a long of 47 and was 40 of 41 on XP’s.

It should be a very exciting year !

I think we’re ready for a push.

Love how the trib, shoved the bald headed charlatan of Creepy Vally on a page of a Pitt story.

Great to get a guy wanted by other big time schools.

Love a 4.43 forty. Hopefully the damn is breaking.

Still hoping for some impact players on the defensive side of the ball. Maybe that comes next.

Old Pitt Grad, Chryst is no Urban Meyer, but neither is he Dave Hart or Carl DePasqua. He lead a team with 12 freshmen to a winning season last year and better times are coming.

@Emel

I also saw the pic of Franklin on the Trib page. However, the Post-Gazette did not mention Henderson’s commitment—which is even worse.

@ pmd

Haven’t been on that rag yet. Thx for the headsup, maybe I’ll just skip those fools.

Comment by Emel 06.11.14 @ 9:18 am

pmdH2P, PG mentione dit last night on their twitter (online), but you’re right, there is no article as yet.

But the love affair that the Trib has with Franklin is over-the-top. If you go thru their archives just the past 2-3 weeks alone and see their PSU articles and PSU Blog, you would think you are reading from Black Shoe Diaries.

Both Pgh papers seem to be too PSU oriented which I attribute to (1) their sports editors whom I both believe are pSU alums, and (2) the amount of hits they get for these articles on their online editions from PSU fans

Comment by wbb 06.11.14 @ 10:29 am

The pg & trib are trash, one of the main reasons I came here to get more info. I understand psu is an in state school, but Pitt is the in city school & they barely get mentioned. We get bombarded with psu & get as much Pitt as we do wvu. Sickening.

Comment by Nick 06.11.14 @ 10:38 am

Unfortunately, writers make a living selling papers, there are many more PSU fans and they are much more rabid than us. Pitt needs to do a better job of marketing and selling the culture, but it is an uphill battle. The further you get from Allegheny Co. the stronger the support for PSU.

Winning games will make a difference because Pittsburgh loves a winner and is very spoiled.

Comment by gc 06.11.14 @ 11:09 am

I am really happy with Henderson. He had some legit offers. I have to give praise when it is due. Way to go coaches… Nice Pick Up. Anytime you beat out Clemson for a kid he is legit.

Comment by Upittbaseball 06.11.14 @ 11:14 am

PC’s recruiting style of offering players after seeing them
workout is wise and ultimately will be effective in moving
the program forward.

Sam Werner of the PG is the worst; no surprise that
the latest commits dd not get a mention.

Comment by Jr 06.11.14 @ 11:40 am

@Upitt

Let no one say that you are always negative. You are a tough sell, but you have high standards and I respect that.

Comment by pmdH2P 06.11.14 @ 11:55 am

I still contend since we don’t get much respect at all from the local media(newspapers), therefore neither do we from the national media.

It all starts at home !

Glad I don’t live in Pgh., that always pissed me off to no end !

Comment by wbb 06.11.14 @ 12:26 pm

OK, where is the real Upitt?

You and I agree that Pederson is terrible for the entire sports program, just not football. Chryst will win with or without Pederson, it’s just whether Chryst is here or elsewhere. I am convinced that if Pitt goes 9-3 and Michigan goes 6-6, we better watch out. If you don’t think it is possible, look at what state penn hired. Their new coach had a much easier schedule at vandy than our coach has in the ACC. I am just saying he needs to be extended for a couple of years…. now.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 06.12.14 @ 7:34 am

Duff – I wouldn’t extend Chryst till he proves something. He wins 8 games this year (weak schedule) and sure give him a few years. Michigan in no shape or form would hire Chryst who has done very little at Pitt. It is Michigan Man, not Temple.

Lastly, Yes, I can’t stand Peterson. We agree on that. I also don’t think Vandy’s schedule was easier than our schedule last year. The SEC vs. ACC isn’t close. I don’t know about the non-conf for them though. I know ours was weak. I will have to look at who they played. Extend Chryst after he wins 8. Don’t extend him in fear he would even be considered for UM job if open.

Comment by Upittbaseball 06.12.14 @ 8:40 am

So four * corner Kareem Ali is announcing his commitment at 2:10 p.m. today. It’s between us Louisville and the Terps. I checked Twitter and nobody is even giving us a chance.

I’d love to prove ’em wrong.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 06.12.14 @ 10:22 am

Kareem Ali picks Maryland over Louisville and Pitt.

Comment by Mailman 06.12.14 @ 1:36 pm

Don’t forget the Hillbillies as well.

Twerps…..lol

Comment by Emel 06.12.14 @ 1:44 pm

I think that was my point upitt. At 9 wins, he becomes a target and it may be too late to extend. 8 wins and he is safe although Franklin left after an 8 win season, with a very weak schedule. It would take strategic thought by Pederson and he seems most uncomfortable thinking and then executing anything strategic in my opinion. He is reactive not proactive. Succession planning is definitely not his forte’. Geeezums, is he terrible!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 06.12.14 @ 7:24 pm

That era will end shortly with boosters stepping up to buy him out. Nordy did Pitt no favors by extending him. Curious how the new Chancellor will view the relationship between academics and athletics and how he will use sports to enhance the university’s brand and image. And if he has any ideas on how to create a better or more fun sports environment. Getting fans and alumni engaged and creating memories is the way to generate dollars and donations. Tough sell when you play off campus and your AD is an overpaid gentlemen to put it nicely.

Comment by TX Panther 06.12.14 @ 8:42 pm

TX Panther – good points regarding the new Chancellor and us not knowing how he views sports in the Big Picture.

However, I’m not sure at all that Pederson’s contract will be bought out by boosters. That is a reach IMO. There was a reason Pederson was extended as the BoT and Nordy have different views on the subject then anti-Pederson PITT sports fans.

If Gallagher, who has spent the last 20 years at NIST which is as ultra-nerdy as it gets, doesn’t value sports as we hope he does then it will be good to have a continuing AD in that position to protect what is already established. In that I mean the pretty strong emphasis Nordy had in place for PITT sports.

Just think, Gallagher was a cross-country running tech nerd in HS. Hell, he may be the best guy for the rapidly rising high-tech & medical programs at the University but in truth we have no idea at all how he feels about the sports arena.

We’ll see, but I think the chances of Pederson not being here for the next two years at least is less than 50-50

Comment by Reed 06.13.14 @ 6:03 am

Reed, I am not anti-Pederson. He is average to below average in my opinion. I am a realist when comparing him to the AD’s that I know and work with in the Big10. That is my point of reference and yes their opinions of him are honest which says more than anything because they are a small fraternity and for some to speak so poorly of him, speaks volumes.

We can do better!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 06.14.14 @ 4:39 pm

dhuff – I’m sure we can do better. Whether or not that is going to happen in the near future with a booster buy-out is the question though. Personally, I don’t think we’ll see that at least in the next two years.
