The other side of the coin on signing day is that within days afterwards you see assistant and especially position coaches fired or move on to another job. Those that stay through signing day are the ones that have key relationships with recruits and the head coach doesn’t want to have anything change at the last minute.

But after signing day…

Rumors about WR Coach Bobby Engram swirled on signing day. That he was one of three candidates for the WR Coach with the Baltimore Ravens. Naturally Head Coach Paul Chryst claimed not to know anything about it when asked at the signing day press conference. The question had to be asked, even if the non-denial was fully expected.

Sure enough, the news leaked yesterday that Bobby Engram was going to be the new WR Coach with the Ravens.

Under Engram’s watch, receiver Devin Street earned all-league honors each of the past two seasons and ended his career with the most career receptions in Panthers history.

This past season, Engram helped freshman Tyler Boyd turn into a dynamic offensive weapon.

Despite not playing receiver primarily at Clairton High School, Boyd finished his first collegiate season with 85 catches for 1,174 yards and seven touchdowns.

Engram’s most important contributions to the Panthers, though, might have come as a recruiter. He played a key role in securing many of the 2014 prospects that signed Wednesday with Pitt, including serving as the lead recruiter for four-star wide receiver Adonis Jennings. He also was the lead recruiter for Boyd in 2013.

This is an obvious blow to Pitt. The recruiting issue is obvious. On a staff without a lot of recruiting strength and connections, Engram proved to be the coach who brought in playmakers.

But his actual coaching the wide receivers position was why he is being hired for the same job in the NFL. It turned out that Engram knew how to communicate and teach the position. Devin Street went from tantalizing potential to sure-handed, great route-running receiver who could go deep or be a possession receiver. His development of Tyler Boyd was outstanding.

For Engram, this is a no-brainer. NFL money is going to be far bigger for a position coach than at just about any college equivalent (yes, I’m sure you can find a few exceptions with the big, big spending programs). It’s a jump in profile for any young, ambitious coach wanting to climb the ladder. For him, I can do nothing but congratulate him, thank him for what he has done for Pitt the last two years and wish him well.

Engram was a first time position coach when hired. He was fairly recently retired from being a journeyman NFL WR, and only began his coaching career. He was on the San Francisco 49ers staff as an offensive assistant. He came into contact with 49ers QB Coach Geep Chryst — one of Coach Paul Chryst’s brothers.

I don’t suppose there’s another young offensive assistant on the 49ers staff Geep could recommend? Then again, Geep also got to know Matt House when he was with the Carolina Panthers, so…

No idea who or where Pitt will turn to for the position. Whoever it is has a big job to fill. Pitt needs a guy who can recruit, but with the talent at and coming to the position he better know how to do something with the players.

Maybe Dravon Henry’s mom?

Guys – I agree Antonio is from South Florida but the state of pa isn’t big enough for his ego.

@pmdH2P, it’s the sound I can’t get out of my head after watching the Pitt v. Miami basketball game.

46-45 Pitt with a few posters coming on and telling me how great Va. Tech’s “D” is, and how this is just how Jamie wants it, and Pitt actually played really well.

as Fredo Corleone said, “it ain’t how I wanted it”

Well, it may be that way for the next few months. I am willing to bet that I am wearing the “4th time” blue and gold boxers tomorrow during the game and that will be when she pulls out the laundry in which they would have been washed. So, come Wednesday I will be going for #5 while watching us beat Syracuse.

I am doing my part guys. Plus, it is not like I am going out on some hot date for the night. If she is interested, they will be off before she even knows what I had on.

It is the little things we do that make the difference. I am proud to be part of this good group of Pitt people.

I realize that I am as old as dirt but in excepting such a label my question is what has Gordon Jones been doing for the last 30 years or so?

Comment by Dr. Tom 02.07.14 @ 7:39 pm

Hail the victorious PANTHER WRESTLERS! 19-14 victory at Fitzgerald over the VT Hokies! Overcame a tough injury loss in one match with a real nice team win. Listening to the announcers talk about how many young and talented underclassmen we have makes the future look bright! H2P! UPone

Dr. Tom, Now that’s a name from the past. Yes we remember Gordon Jones. But I thought you would support Emel in his candidacy for wide receiver coach.

Comment by Justinian 02.07.14 @ 8:58 pm

Not sure about how classy Engram really is as I don’t know what he said to the WR recruits and their families in the days leading up to LOI day. If he told them he was going to be their coach and that they had no reason to worry, that would not be very classy. He did do some great things for the program and didn’t screw us over on his way out the door, so I’m grateful and wish him luck. If that’s what qualifies as classy then so be it.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 02.07.14 @ 9:30 pm

Thank BIG!! Ask Steeler Hines Ward to coach for a year or two. Pitt receivers could learn alot from a great “blocking” receiver with great hands. Be a boost for recruiting also…………

Maryland doesn’t think Nordenberg and Pederson played fair and square on joining the ACC and has subpoenaed Pitt’s records.

Do the Terps have any evidence to back up their hunches or are they just stalling?

Comment by TonyinHouston 02.07.14 @ 10:40 pm

Those of you with high hopes & expectations about HCPC’s replacement for Engram: As they say in Jersey, forgetaboutit! Another Chryst disciple on the way!

Comment by TonyinHouston 02.07.14 @ 10:43 pm

Quick! Get Smiling Stevie on the phone…
The ACC wants to schedule more games against the SEC. This might make it hard for Pitt to continue playing the likes of Akron…oh my.

I wonder if Pedie got the message?

Comment by TonyinHouston 02.07.14 @ 10:46 pm

Tony, maybe we can be the school to get Vanderbilt on the schedule. I would rather take my with them.

Justinian:
Good idea. I mean they did steal a recruit and sent us tumbling down about four sports in the recruiting rankings:

Tony, Maryland is employing the “Smoke and Mirrors” legal defense. Why? Because they have 50 million reasons, the 50 million dollar ACC exit fee. Their legal team will throw as much shit against the wall as possible, in hopes that some of it sticks.

Comment by Justinian 02.07.14 @ 11:15 pm

Tony, Yes, and I like our chances against Vanderbilt a little better than playing Alabama.

Comment by Justinian 02.07.14 @ 11:19 pm

justinian i guess i am dumb but what we did or did not do to get into the ACC what does that have to do with maryland leaveing.
i dont get it even if we held a gun to some ones head how does that have any thing to do with maryland leaveing the ACC i just dont understand it

Comment by Frankcan 02.07.14 @ 11:57 pm

There are many young quality coach’s out in the football world who would come to Pitt to coach our receivers. Pitt just has to pick one and move on.

Comment by MariettaMike 02.08.14 @ 8:08 am

@Dr. Tom, Gordon “Too Much” Jones.

Great memories. Allthough only a teen, my Dad had me heavily invested with my heart to Pitt by then.

I remember the Notre Dame game in 76′, he had several Lynn Swann-Larry Fitzgerald catches, along with two huge punt returns, where he was going from one side of the field to the other, shaking guys out of their jock straps!!

Hail To Pitt!!!

Comment by Dan 02.08.14 @ 10:06 am

At the collegiate level the most important factors are 1) ability to recruit 2) ability to identify talent and put them in a winning situation. In the business leadership world this means a) getting the right people on the bus 2) putting them in the right seats

This was Engram’s strength and he will be missed. Thanks B Engram for a job well done. Hope we see you on Pitt’s sidelines in the future as an OC or HC as his talent is definitely there.

Comment by Pitt fan in Atlanta 02.08.14 @ 11:38 am

I think the ACC is sitting on some 30 to 35 million of undisbursed funds due MD. Not sure that includes the pending 22 million payout in June. But seems MD want to lesson the hit and go. VT Beamer ball. Wow this is one bad performance at home.

Comment by chethejet 02.08.14 @ 1:25 pm

Majors and Sherrill, were they really that good or was a big part of it the all star cast of assistant coaches that went through Pitt under them. The hired the best and because of that they moved upward and onward and they would find another. Chryst has to start using the same approach. Agree with all. Engrams loss is double whamy coaching and especially recruiting.Wish him well with NFL.

I too remember Gordon “Rooster” Jones as a kid! We all had winter hats with a rooster head and Pitt on the sides! I was sold on Pitt by then also – in the genes at birth I believe.
