Not There Yet

Filed under: Basketball — Chas @ 10:25 am

Missed bunnies, missed free throws and some unkind iron.

Those are the top three reasons for me that led to Pitt’s 5-point loss yesterday. The officiating sucked, but it sucked both ways so I consider that a wash.

The freshmen looked like freshmen for large portions of this game. This was their first game in a truly hostile road situation (sorry, I can’t count NC State or GT when they were dead or half-empty crowds). It showed at points, and they will learn.

I can’t say I expected Pitt to win this one going into it. I can’t say I’m surprised at the loss. I am, though, disappointed.

What I am not, though, is frustrated.

This team is better than I expected it to be this year. They are playing better than expected. They have proven adaptable and play at different paces and styles.

This is not a moral victory thing. This is simply, not hanging the head and gnashing teeth. The chances were there, they didn’t take them all, but there’s a rematch in February at the Pete against the Orange. There are a lot more games to play.

(Oh, dammit, I just agreed with a Ron Cook column.)

If there was any doubt that this was a game that both teams wanted and fought. That was being played all out to win, just check out a box score and look at the minutes played.

Syracuse played three of its starters (Fair, Grant and Ennis) for all 40 minutes. Pitt had Zanna and Patterson go 38 minutes, Wright logged 37 and Robinson lost a couple because of foul trouble to play “only” 35.

Can we at least give some credit to Syracuse as well as bemoaning what Pitt didn’t do? They are the #2 team in the country for a reason. They did make the plays late in the game after Pitt stormed back and took a lead late. Tyler Ennis took over for the Orange.

It’s also worth noting that Pitt isn’t the only team to have players improve and develop over time. Rakeem Christmas and Jerami Grant were completely overmatched last year. This year they are key starters and they did a number on Pitt offensively. Zanna had no answer to Christmas (who is shooting 73.6%) and Grant was very good attacking the basket.

The one thing that Syracuse couldn’t do against Pitt, get a rebound.

Said Dixon: “The rebounding is what we came in here to do. We talked about getting 15 offensive rebounds and we got 16. We need to finish some more, but we got the ball inside and did what we wanted to do on a regular basis. It just seemed we didn’t get enough finishes out of it.”

The Orange came into Saturday’s game leading the ACC in offensive rebounding percentage. Syracuse was grabbing a startling 44 percent of the caroms that came off its offensive glass in its four previous ACC games.

The Panthers limited SU to a total of four offensive rebounds. Baye Moussa Keita grabbed two of them.

Admittedly, there weren’t nearly that many opportunities for offensive rebounds when a team shoots better than 50%. Still, Pitt was able to grab 16 offensive rebounds. The struggle was in converting them to points. Zanna was okay at 50% shooting to get 12 points and 11 boards. Mike Young, though is still struggling to get through the trees. He grabbed 3 offensive rebounds (5 total), but was only 1-4 shooting. Derrick Randall was 0-2 including an excruciatingly painful missed bunny. Jamel Artis seemed to drift away from the paint at times.

It’s one of those things. You look at each player on the box score, you see that for the most part, the shooting on each was just a hair off. 3-7 each by Robinson and Wright (42%). Lamar Patterson was 6-15 (40%). Zanna, 4-8. But then you add in Young, Artis, Newkirk, Randall and Jones shooting a combined 2-10 and suddenly Pitt had a horrible game shooting the ball. Same with the free throw shooting (aside from Jones).

James Robinson said as much after the game.

“That’s tough,” Pitt point guard James Robinson said. “We’ve been a pretty good free-throw shooting team. I hate to come here and let that be one of the factors that play into us losing, but there were other aspects of the game that we didn’t execute or do as well as we should have.

“When you start letting all of those different categories add up — and not in your favor — that’s when you tend to lose.”

You can make yourself crazy. Get two of those bunnies. Find two more made free throws. A friendlier bounce on the rim. Suddenly it is a gritty, stirring win over the #2 team on the road. Knocking off an unbeaten.

Chris Jones played better defensively in this game than at GT, but he was definitely unnerved by the hostile crowd on offense. Newkirk was not able to control the tempo. He is Pitt’s fastest player, no question, but against Syracuse he had to slow it down and was unable to change speed. He was rushing it up the court and right into the Syracuse zone with no where to go.

If you saw the way Syracuse dismantled UNC a couple weeks ago, that was the way that went. UNC wants to constantly push tempo. Syracuse let them rush it up the court and become a mess on offense because they found themselves going  right into a disciplined defense that was already there waiting.

Both will learn. Both will get better.

So, yeah, Syracuse did more to get the win, but Pitt knows they had their chances.

“I thought we had opportunities, we had chances, we had a 3-point lead with the ball down the stretch and obviously didn’t get it done,” Dixon said. “I thought we had some pretty good looks that we didn’t knock down. I don’t know what we could have done differently as far as get better shots. Simply put, they made a higher rate from the free-throw line and the floor.

“We have to learn from some things, but we played with a lot of heart and a lot of energy. They had seven blocked shots, so that was a part of [the missed layups]. I thought we powered up, there were some plays that I thought we did everything we needed to do and I thought we got it inside and had good looks but they have lot of physicality and a lot of long athletes.”

And yes, I know about the football recruiting. I’m still at my in-laws. I went down to a Starbucks to glom on the wi-fi to get this out. Hopefully later today I will get a chance to post thoughts on the recruiting stuff when I’m home.

Young still has that split second of thought before he acts, whether it is an outlet pass or goes to the hoop or takes his shot. Most freshmen do. The only one that never hesitated was Blair, fastest move to the hoop ever.

Next year that hesitation will be gone. Be nice if it goes away sooner, “He who hesitates is lost”.

Coaching advice I was given long ago, not sure who was the author.

Comment by gc 01.20.14 @ 10:10 am

That hesitation is also why he is getting to many shots blocked without getting fouled. He need to go up fast and hard on put backs.

Comment by gc 01.20.14 @ 10:16 am

This team is obviously capable of making an NCAA run and has an excellent chance to win the ACC. Those saying Zanna couldn’t hold up against big strong frontlines had better think again. Another double double against a very strong frontline. He more than held his own in fact one could argue that they should have fed him the ball at the foul line more. He shoots better than our 38% and when we got it inside we drew fouls. A couple more of those could have made a huge difference.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 10:18 am

I wonder if Jones should be playing as bad as his busted right hand looks.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 10:45 am

Looking ahead to Clemson, they don’t have much size which usually bodes well for us.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 10:53 am

@gc – Zanna was 4 of 6 from the FT line which is a little better than his season average of 61% so maybe he heard you and he is improving.

Comment by Pitt Dad 01.20.14 @ 10:57 am

I thought the officiating was road worthy and Dixon’s technical was needed to keep it fair. I loved the play late in the first half when there was a loose ball on the floor in front of the Pitt bench. Dixon was leaning out on the court so far when he called time out to secure the ball, I thought he was going to dive into the melee. He gets a little intense at times.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 11:27 am

All the first year players were tentative; this what first year players usually do.

Ennis a 5-star 1st-year, and that may be the difference between the big boys like Cuse and Pitt … they have guys with great talent and natural instincts that take over at crunch time.

Fields had the instincts but not the great talent. If anything, Young was the opposite.

Comment by wbb 01.20.14 @ 12:29 pm

Prior to this game, Chris Jones was 11 for 12 from the FT line. He went 1 for 4 against Cuse including a miss on the front end of a 1 and 1.

And I think it was not only the freshman but clearly everyone had their poor moments

Comment by MikePITT 01.20.14 @ 12:56 pm

Preseason we were 50/50 to make the tournament and not mentioned in anyones top 40. Now we are the 5th most likely team to win the championship. The sad part is the same idiots who said we weren’t in the top 40 are the ones saying we can win. They didn’t know their xxx from a hole in the ground then and they still don’t.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 1:12 pm

MikePitt, must admit that I’m amazed that Pitt is ranked that highly in the categories shown on your link

PreSeason rankings are based on the previous season finishes as well as Name schools. But what gets me is how long these media types believe these rankings are credible even when a school continues to play poorly

Comment by wbb 01.20.14 @ 1:23 pm

The media types are clueless. We have a good team but just like the fact that we aren’t likely to finish 6th in the ACC, we aren’t headed for the Final 4 either. We have no depth and 2 freshman playing the 4. Our kids have heart and over achieve but reality is we are about 15-20 and have a shot at the sweet 16. We might win the conference because we have a scheduling advantage. Miracles can happen and our freshman could mature quickly and even make us better, but that isn’t likely. We don’t have enough to win it all.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 1:42 pm

It just goes to show how out of wack the polls were that when you lose you go up in virtually every poll.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 2:02 pm

I have paid particular attention to the Pitt FT shooting as I taught it, coached it and was a 79.4% lifetime shooter myself. The difference in form from Zanna, Wright and the returners is noticeable (in a good way)but sometimes in big games under pressure, we all resort back to bad habits. I will take Zanna alone for that on Saturday.

He badly missed his first 2 FT’s because he went back to short arming his shots. A quick talk with Slice, and he did not miss any ending up 4-6 extending the arm fully and making the hook.

The balance, differnce in arc, and follow through show a committment by all the Pitt Players to improve in the FT arena. Note how quickly they get the shot off compared to last year also.
Mike Young might be the best natural FT shooter I’ve seen at Pitt.

Unfortunately, just like the turnovers, missed layups, fumbled hand offs etc, nerves and pressure played a huge part.

I have no doubt that this will be the best FT shooting Pitt team maybe ever under the JD/BH regime when the year ends.

Comment by Dan 72 01.20.14 @ 2:36 pm

It’s not unusual at all to move up if you lose on the road in a close game to a top team. I like it. We’re getting some respect. And Cincy continues to roll through their schedule. We have two close loses to two top 15 teams on neutral court and away.

Creighton vs. Nova tonight should be interesting…And Michigan is starting to look interesting as well.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 01.20.14 @ 2:48 pm

I think this team needs James Robinson to develop anther gear. He is too hesitant to shoot. I could live with him forcing a shot here and there particularly if he can draw some fouls.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 2:49 pm

Silver Panther , Right now we need to be thinking Clemson. Any respect we are getting doesn’t allow for surprises and we are on a path for a quality seed in the NCAA’s. We need to win at the Pete for sure and don’t need any wannabes like Clemson screwing things up. They upset Duke at home so they aren’t some walkover.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 2:54 pm

The kid from Creighton can really play.

Comment by gc 01.20.14 @ 3:14 pm

@gc, McDermitt is real talented and with his Dad being coach the team is built to feature him. No way they make the final 4.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 3:19 pm

How about Villanova at # 4. That’s one top 10 team I know we can handle.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 3:38 pm

Well obviously I’m thinking about Pitt’s games. Just commenting on these other teams….Yo, has anyone seen Lance Stephenson play lately? Dude is going bonkers and also showboats like crazy. It’s actually kind of fun watching him.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 01.20.14 @ 3:56 pm

Anybody here seen Clemson play this year?

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 4:01 pm

I’ve seen them twice and they are athletic but don’t shoot too well or seem to create much with set plays or individually on offense. Defensively, the big guy in the midddle is athletic and fast and overall they seem athletic all around.

I see us beating them easily unless they have an unusual shooting game. I am surprised they have such a good record and especially that they beat Duke.

Comment by TVax 01.20.14 @ 5:15 pm

@sos22

Glad to see you back bro. We were just about to put an APB out on you ! 🙂

And we should have moved UP in the polls. One or 2 spots was not enough. They didn’t give us any leeway at all. One loss this week and we’re out.

Comment by Emel 01.20.14 @ 5:27 pm

Think our biggest problem to solve before the Dance. Developing another 3 point threat. Looking over the team stats, Patterson is the only available Panther who has made double digit 3’s (36).

Then all the way down to JR with 9.
Then Newkirk with 8.
Then Wright, Young & Artis with 3 each.

Teams are really going to start ‘keying’ on Lamar, and as we saw Sat. he had to go way out, to get a launching point for a 3 attempt.

When is Rowan Maverick set to enroll ?

Emel We need to get down to business so there is no losses.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 5:37 pm

@Emel , Have you seen Clemson play? On paper they aren’t very big which usually means we dominate, particularly at home. They have good shooting averages but don’t score much and seem to have some defensive success. What do you know about them and their coach?

Happy that Pitt moved up in the rankings which is deserved. Don’t see Pitt losing to Clemson tomorrow. Let’s hope Pitt starts a new win streak. Hail to Pitt!

For those of you who say rankings don’t matter during the regular season, this is a reason they do:

link to scores.espn.go.com

Ranked teams get coverage in the media, even a game preview the day before the game. Coverage is important for recruiting. ‘Nuff said.

Although we didn’t get our GT win linked to ESPN’s front page. j-offs.

Comment by Emel 01.20.14 @ 7:41 pm

@sos22 no I haven’t but PITT should be favored by at least 7 points.

Clemscum has lost to both these SEC middlings on the road, Auburn and Arkansas.

Also barely got past lowly BC by 2 in beantown.

They are 307th in assists, only 10 per game. And only average 66 ppg (301rst). Only shoot it at 43% FG (240th).

All of this indicates a PITT rout. Only challenge for JD is to avoid the natural letdown after the tough loss at Cusey. Or course it could have been a trap game as well, if we had beat Cusey as well.

Comment by Emel 01.20.14 @ 7:48 pm

UNC getting kicked around again at Virginia.

Comment by spiritofsection22 01.20.14 @ 8:00 pm

Tarholes go down again at UVA…61-76

Villimanilli got destroyed, so much for them being #4. 68-96

That will however, get fellow BigEast Creighton back in the polls next week.

Comment by Emel 01.20.14 @ 8:56 pm

Your argument is that rankings matter because ESPN has a link on their page previewing a game tonight that they’re covering?

If your other argument that Pitt being ranked this year is influencing recruits for 2016? I’m pretty sure they’ve already got their 2014 class set, and I am nearly certain that the 2015 class is too although I haven’t run the numbers.

The only thing that I will agree with is that ranking makes it easier to find Pitt games on the various scoreboards and previews.

Comment by Barvo 01.21.14 @ 8:23 am

If the argument is that Pitt being ranked matters for a recruiting class then why did Josh Newkirk, Michael Young and Jamel Artis come to Pitt? Pitt wasn’t ranked after mid December two years ago and went to the CBI. They were in and out (mostly out) of the rankings last year and finished unranked. Mostella tried to transfer to Pitt afterward. Cling to it Emel and Lou.
